Hangster + Red Threads

THERMITE

Let's get together on the sharp edge of a knife I'm gonna let love tear me down

The first time they lay hands on each other turns out that they want to get under each other's skin like animals claw through fur and flesh. Bradley Bradshaw has grown weary of Jake Seresin running his mouth like he runs a three ring circus. A showman of his own demise, Hangman commands attention and says things he means because he always means something; like he's a poet of terrible preambles. Bradley understand he does so after spending enough time around the man, that every word comes chock full of reasoning behind, even if at first you can't catch it. But the first time Rooster's hand come in contact with Hangman's too-warm skin isn't because of desire; it's because of white hot rage. Burning like thermite, bursting anger at words that the blond had thrown his way, he wraps one hand around his arm and another around his throat with eyes burning wet. If this were a cartoon scene, Rooster would be steaming out the ears as he pushes him against a wall. He can hear the way Hangman's breath is knocked out of his lungs and his eyes cross a little as his head hits the wooden wall. In fact, all he can hear and feel is Hangman under his hands, skin too warm, muscles too firm, eyes too bright.

People's shouting around them are all muted, Bradley's ears are roaring as Jake laughs. He laughs in his face even as he's pinned against a wall; laughter that burns back like mustard gas, blistering his lungs as he breathes it in. He may have one hand around Hangman's throat, but it feels like he is the one having the life choked out of himself.

He pulls his hand from the man's throat and closes a pulled fist back but allows his knuckles to connect with the wood right by Hangman's right ear instead. His heart racing like he's ran up a mountain, his own breathing so loud in his ears. Whoever is pulling on Hangman's noose like strings, making him dance to this song of cruelty like the unreal boy he is, has no mercy for Rooster. Splinters from the wood etch themselves into his skin but all he sees are green eyes digging back into his.

When they're finally pulled apart from each other, Rooster realizes there's no coming back from this; whatever this is. Tangled into each other forever, when he tries to fall asleep that night, Hangman's — no, Jake Seresin's rapacious eyes made of verdigris patina burn into his memory and keep him awake, tossing and turning.

Bradley can still hear Hangman's cruel, fluttering laughter loud and clear, making his heart skip enough beats to play another song.

headcanon that as sophie ages, she gets more and more off-put by how she still looks twenty at some age past 40. the only wrinkles she has are smile lines and a barely-there crease between her eyebrows that never leaves. no gray hairs. it doesn’t feel like there’s any physical evidence of how much stress aged her too fast.

(maybe she dyes more grays into her hair to feel better about her reflection, the more time passes by. maybe, on bad days, she contours wrinkles into her skin with makeup. maybe the bad days get more frequent as she ages outside the human lifespan. maybe.)

one piece of fanon I see thrown about as a casual fact about beej is that he is somehow morally opposed to cheating as a concept, and has judged and would judge people based on them doing that. most of the time I see the evidence for this being his own meltdowns over even the potential of cheating on peg, and his behaviour towards hawkeye in The More I See You.

the latter is particularly confusing to me because he does emphatically state in his conversation with hawkeye in potters office that he actively does not have a moral aversion to cheating - "I couldn't break my word to Peg. And not because God'll send me to hell without an electric fan... or because it's not the right thing to do. I just don't want to."

and one of the reasons i think he says this - and the reason I think people read some sort of judgement from bj in this scene - is that hawkeye is twitchy about it. hawkeye is probing, maybe projecting, is worried about this guy thinking badly of him because he himself doesn't feel too clean about it. he pokes and he prods, slightly skittishly and nervously.

textually bj starts this conversation, and I think hawkeye (and therefore some of the audience) read into that that he is doing so to Make a Point, but what I personally read into it - and I think the intent - is that bj has some genuine concern (and perhaps a healthy dose of interest!) because he has already had a huge dose of the backstory to this whole debacle, and like any sensible person I don't think he sees it ending well for his friend.

but by the end of it hawkeye knows he has neither censure nor celebration from bj, just a steady and even-keeled acceptance of what hawkeye accepts is 'messing up his life'. bj is just acting as a neutral good-natured sounding board, which is very much early BJ's MO. it's a carefully balanced check in from a friend, one that I fanonically read as an echo of what he says he does with Peg, where he sort of pokes until she speaks about what is on her mind. (In this reading I sort of see hawkeye as hanging about wanting to Talk on purpose, especially as objectively you think this would be Private Time for bj and peg. hawkeye, to me, seems to be Loitering.)

but as bj says, a la potter writing to mildred... that's none of his business 😉

I've had this idea for a while but everytime I actually gave it thought, I'd get frightened last minute. But anyways, with summer coming up (and more free time), I've been considering making an ask blog of sorts just for fun. Does that seem like anything anyone would be interested in

Heheh thanks for Asking Meg!!! All aboard another long winded ramble about my wife ST: Voyager!!!!!

While I answered in the last one, I think I'll add to it by saying I love the Ds9/Voyager Uniforms--Infact I'm a HUGE sucker for them--At least to me, they feel like THE signature trek costume rather than TNG or TOS ones. Plus, they are fun to draw! I love how they look on the actors with the structured upper half, and loose, high-waisted pants that give everyone the illusion of height.

Those that are dressed in the uniform are portrayed with a respectable heft and a pleasant, overall shape. I know it's not the case, but they look like they are really practical. This is fully intentional as the lead costume designer said they wanted the suits to appear modular and have advantages in different environments. That's why sometimes they are unzipped or twisted around, depending on the narrative.

I could go on and on about them. I act feral over how they look when when all the actors stand together, turned in various ways, posing so that that folds pucker on their joints, or when subtle differences in their body sizes take up screen. It just looks so cool! I'm a big fan of squad-based, colour-coded uniforms and clean silhouettes.

Most importantly though, it gives them all BODY-ODY-ODY!!!

🍽️What alien food/drink would you want to try?

I wish I could find the video but I've seen bits and pieces about how they designed the food on the sets and I think it's super charming!

Lots of effort went into considering the cuisine. It just about decorates every set and It was important to the show. Voyager engaged in a lot visual gags, or dialog discussing food. It was in a comforting way that would present the characters with their personal ideals of home.I find that subtext of world-building really endearing.

Many scenes involved characters bonding in the mess hall, socializing around food, or isolating with it to gain a sense of self. In contrast, it's used as a device for diplomacy, or to make settings seem more alien, unnavigated and removed from regular comforts. It's even incorporated into main plot points, such as with Tuvok in ''Riddles'', when he gains a newfound skill around cooking after a serious accident, and he solves the plot by decorating a code on a cake. Through food, we saw a lot of what it could be like to be a crew member on the ship, and live inside their Universe. It wasn't always pretty but they made it work.

We have a really rich food bowl and diverse food-culture In Australia, I love noticing exotic food that are used as set decoration of as props--I am used to seeing tropical fruit or Asian ingredients around my community, so it's fun to see it transformed. And much like the characters in Voyager, I relate to the comfort and the charting of new territories when it comes to seeing/ eating food.

I suspect being a chef / working in hospitality would be an interesting occupation in Trek. Everyone complains about the lack of authenticity from replicated food, so I'm sure being a good Chef would be worth your while.

I genuinely want to try Old-mate Neelix's cooking. He seems so creative and passionate about what he plates up, and he CLEARLY (they all put on weight haha) kept the crew well-fed. ''Bitches make do'', but you can tell he cares by the questions he askes everyone, or the detail he places into his recipes. I'd like to see what all the fuss is about with Leeola Root Stew. I bet it's not that bad! (I like bitter food) Or better, serve me up a Jimbalian Fudge cake! It's so quaint how there is an evolution to his work as he gets more integrated with everyone.
