Hunter: Werewolf Forms

;; In the werewolf verse, Hunter technically has two wolf forms. One is hardly ever actually seen and is an involuntary transformation when his natural rage becomes too much for him to keep suppressing, so he loses all control and goes full feral beast on a rampage.

The other is still not quite voluntary unless he really absolutely needs it, but it’s a lot more tame and he can actually speak in this form. He can’t speak in his feral rage form, though if he manages to gain enough sense of self, he might still try.

I'm currently writing the next chapter (my uni class got cancelled, so I got loads of free time, lol), and I felt like writing down a little fun fact about revenant AU's origins.

Putting it under read more for those who aren't interested, this is me just rambling lmao

So, my initial idea came from me wanting to combine the MW characters and military setting with my magic system from my original stories (that I never talk about here)

In that idea, Soap was the only one with powers, and he hid them from everyone until an event (that will happen in the fic, so I'm not telling you details) happens, and he has to reveal them to Ghost. From then on they have to work together to hide it, eventually Price and Gaz find out, and slowly they all learn more about the origins of Soap's powers.

Now a little tidbit about how my magic system works, because that's the fun part. So, you have people with powers, called Devoted, who make a deal with a god to get those powers.

The gods choose their Devoted by their personality and lifestyle, and they're extremely rare.

Now obviously you can already tell how the two magic systems align, with Reapers being the gods from my story, and revenants being the Devoted.

So, which gods would align with the 141 revenants?

Soap, because he's the only one with powers directly from the original magic system, is from the God of Chaos, of the skies and space. His powers were just explosion creation, but it was much more extreme than in revenant AU - literally anything that grazes his body could explode, you couldn't even stab him. Revenant Soap has to concentrate more to explode something, it's not as instant anymore. I chose this god for him because of the explosion powers, and because the Devoted of the Chaos god hate authority, and have a strong sense of internal moral compass.

Gaz also fits perfectly to a god, the Goddess of Cosmos, of the earth and wind. The Goddess of Chaos and the God of Cosmos are opposites, and are most lethal to each other. The Devoted of this goddess appreciate life most, and try to find order in disorder, to fix the unfixable. His gravity manipulation and how floating works for him is taken directly from a character I already had, but unlike Gaz she can't make other things float, just herself.

Ghost doesn't have a direct correlation, but because Limbo is basically filled with kinda-dead people, he would be with the God of Death, of humanity and the arts. That god is the kindest to humans, and his Devoted are the most selfless people. It's an interesting thing for Ghost to be out of all people.

Price can fit into both the death god and the Goddess of Reality, of war and pain. I lean towards reality more because Price is able to plant simple ideas in people's mind. The Devoted of the death god can only feel other's emotion, not thoughts, and they can't change them. If he was a Devoted of the goddess of reality, he would have the power to control what other people perceive of reality. The people chosen by this god are often survivors of war and great pain. Make of that what you will for Price.

I didn't introduce the others, and I have a plan for a few more canon campaign characters and their revenant powers to show up in the fic, but what I found interesting is that none of them fit in the Goddess of Life, of animals and plants. Her Devoted is the main character of my original story...

Since I got old art of all the gods I figured I could show you. Just letting y'all know the style I use for this blog is separate from my usual... because I was mainly a painter before.

I intentionally made the Reapers look much different than the gods, like Soap's Reaper is made of a bunch of butterflies. Ghost's reaper would actually easily fit among the gods because it looks more human than the other Reapers...

Lord Indra, the natural hero who never was

or why Sasuke and Madara always shine despite the whole plot in their disadvantages.

Hero : a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability. b : an illustrious warrior. c : a person admired for achievements and noble qualities. d : one who shows great courage.

Going out of my MGA writing retreat cave for a sec and share with you some of my researches...I don't have great knowledges of vedic texts and Indian culture but to what I read so far (correct me if I'm wrong) Indra is the King of the devas and Heaven. In similar fashion, Zeus king of other gods in Greek mythology. Indra controls storm, rain, and uses thunderbolt as one of his most deadly weapon. He is both the archetype of the mighty warrior, the slayer of great evil (asuras) and also the life-giver. Because you know, rain fertilises earth (if you get the metaphor 💦... 👀). One of his most famous story is how he destroys Vritra the monstrous snake/dragon, also called an asura, who was responsible for holding back waters and created drought. And by doing this, Indra slain the archaic forces blocking the creation of new lives.

As a Naruto fan, I get now the inspiration for Otsutsuki Indra. Sasuke's preference for raiton and kirin, Madara as a god of war and user of storm release, the symbol behind Sasuke killing Oroshimaru in his white snake shape, susanoo although a japanese god is still god of storm killing an other massive snake...

It's kind of funny because Indra is, based on the Vedas tradition, the allegory of the perfect hero. He comes alone, strong-willed, powerful, and slays any obstacles to the natural cycle of life, and by doing so he saves humanity from chaos. And it's precisely what is despise in the Narutoverse about the characters assimilated to him, namely Uchiha clan and Indra Otsutsuki. Indra opposing his unfair father is bad. The Uchiha clan defending themselves against oppression is devilish, Sasuke seeking revenge is detestable, Madara looking for a world purged of evil is absolutely hideous.

There is as well many shinto inspirations but I'm mostly reading here the story in a Vedic perceptive and you'll notice something else about the asura's. It's not a single god but a group of demons always confronting the devas. They are seen in a negative light, the anti-gods, the power-seekers ect... And it kind of makes sense with Naruto who can't progress on his own. He needs to be constantly help and surrounded by people. He is also notoriously possessed by a powerful demon who manifest himself in the beginning of the story when Naruto is corned to anger. Notice also that the only way to control this demonic force is either the sharingan assimilated to shinto spiritual strength or Mokuton from the Senju being assimilated with Buddhism spiritual strength.

So now you get where I'm going... isn't weird that mostly Narutoverse is respecting mythologies and adapt them to its own storyline. For instance the sannin legend, Kaguyahime story. But for Indra and Asura it's a total reverse of values. Intentionally, the good is bad and the bad is good.

Yeah but the plot Al Hekima, don't forget the plot ! I know, I know... If your main character is a boy possessed by a demon, befriends with 9 others demons and it's apparently normal, it will end up this way.

Maybe I'm not objective after all but even before going deeper into analysing the Narutoverse, Indra and the Uchiha clan being seen as cursed and evil by nature, the people who went astray and needed to be beaten into submission, always left me unsettled. Literally, I couldn't comprehend what was wrong with them which justify so much hate. And in opposite Naruto being possessed by a demon is blatantly black magic. His father is never questioned about doing it to his son, neither Hiruzen to the young Kushina, or Hashirama to his wife (in this case they may have both agree). I know it's just fiction, but art doesn't come out of the blue. It's ingrained in the artist's set of value, cultures, emotion ect... And the author stressed in interviews that he wanted to bring positive value to his younger audience. I'm just questioning sometimes what are actually those values? For the Uchihas the idea was to forgive, to not fall into hate, and move on. But forgive without justice? Putting the pressure of moving on solely on the victim and never put the perpetuator in a difficult position? Never ask any apology or reform from the aggressor? The victim needs to forgive with no assurance that it won't happened again. Believe it, right? and eventually the victim needs to help the system who harmed him to keep going... Anyway I'm rambling at this point but that's always my major philosophical disagreement with Kishimoto.

HI HELLO? This is such a surprising concept since I'm already working on another Enstars AU, but anywho!

The core of Tears of Themis is that it has FOUR love interests, which plays hand in hand with our four agencies, well if that matters since we'll focus more on the personalities.. We'll forgo the dynamics the original four have (like marius being vyn's student, vyn and artem having worked with each other before, luke being part of the group the three are also in)

!! [ LONG RANT I GUESS ] !!

Long ass rant incoming regarding V1 and V2 as characters and their personalities. I might add art to this later on if I'm bored enough!

i like the vmodels a lot [can you fucking tell???????????????????????????????] and i think that characterization is important when it comes to these two characters who have had absolutely no words to say but speak in their movements. i like the idea of a bratty asshole v2 and i like the idea of a quiet efficient v1. but i also cannot ignore or neglect other aspects of them!!!!!!!!

my most favorite of all characterization of v2 happens to be inkfaire's, which is like. to quote them, "i just enjoy the idea of them being someone's precious creation; only to fall to its own sense of hubris... we love a machine made to guard times of peace being ended by its desire for violence!"

and i like that, i like that it's coded to be human at first and slowly descends into its own form of madness trying to compete. that would make sense, it fits nicely with the story too.

but v1 i feel is also the same, but in the opposite sense......?

war is also a very human concept, and i think that because of it things like comrades also exist. i feel like v2 could have been a friend, a partner, a comrade. for stuff like gabriel and other enemies with healthbars on-screen, they're almost immediate. v2 always has moments of hesitance? like v1's waiting to see if v2 will actually strike or not, assessing if it truly is a foe. i like that idea. i like the idea of them wanting to be friends. then again, that wouldn't really make sense for 'You're not getting away this time', or even when we Know v2 will fight us again in 4-4 the healthbar doesn't show up (or gabriel's speech in 6-2 either for that matter) rendering it kind of a dumb theory but whooooo knows.

anyways my point is, i really think while it's not exactly programmed to, i feel like v1 carries weight of its death around with it. it grieves. they were born together (though its unclear if they were together at the time of making), and i think they're extremely bonded. the game isn't designed for that, there isn't any special text for it, but i think most people stayed around or at least REACTED when v2 fell and died. i think v1 would do the same. there's even an animation in which v1 flinches upon impact. even if hakita didnt give v2 the closure i think it needed for such an important enemy to v1's life, i think v1 definitely takes v2's death around with them.

and i think violence as a layer is going to fuck with us the absolute most because of how its designed. it's a war themed layer, i think there's going to be callbacks to v2 and humanity somehow. v1's special spot in hell.

in a less serious version of humanity, i like to think v1 is kind of like wall-e...? fascinated by peace itself, to inverse v2's fascination with violence. being stylish during combat, finding secrets, literally just looking around. some people like to write the secrets into their work, i've read a fic where they mentioned that v1 liked to stall around layers and explore basically everything. i think they have an extremely expressive body language, whereas v2's expression comes moreso in their voice. asl can be optional (i like to project and say that they sign, because i sign and i rlly love v1). some people like to think it collects little trinkets and such. holding florp and other things very gently in their hands. doing challenges (which i take as completely canon) just for the fun of it. yeah they're a war machine and yeah they're wiping out all of hell but in their scourge it develops their own humanity and its own identity and they have fun. WE have fun, playing as v1, so they must be having a fucking blast.

Caspian's Inquisition Mod List

For his transmasc Trevelyan

Not even gonna lie to you guys, I probably could handle more mods but my computer is a little old. He's trucking along though and I am so proud of him. I'm gonna include all of the mods I have downloaded for my Trevelyan playthrough (with a link) and a brief description of what they do/why I picked it. I'll try to update it because I usually end up adding more as I go.

Any Voice - Mod that allows you to choose any voice during character creation (male or female/British or American). I don't know how well this portion of the mod works because I opted for the optional file: Flipped Pronouns. This causes your character to be referred to by the opposite pronouns of the gender presentation you selected at character creation. (For me, this allows my male Trevelyan to be played on a feminine model). Player's Note: This does not apply to text in game. Missions, notes, and letters will still refer to the default gender for your selection.

Divine Armor for Lady Trevelyan - Mod that allows the Divine Armor (normally bestowed to a Divine Cassandra or Vivienne in the Trespasser DLC) to be acquired early and equipped on a female Trevelyan model.

War Table (No Waiting) - A classic. I'm an impatient little bastard when it comes to those missions.

More Banter - Make those companions talk a little more often! Guaranteed chatter about every fifteen minutes so they're not just silently following you around for hours on end.

Skills Revamped (Warrior) - I think Warrior is (sadly) one of the weakest classes in Inquisition. I chose to revamp the sword&board and the battlemaster lines, but there are files for all of them. The mod creator has also done a revamp for mages and rogues as well.

Party at the Winter Palace - Allows for ALL of your companions to join you at Halamshiral! Bit lengthy on the introductions, but I think it's worth it to interact with everyone and hear all of the dialogue. Optional file that I think is a MUST is one that cuts out the sexual harassment dialogue concerning Cullen.

Actually Alistair - Another must have. They butchered my boy in Inquisition. This doesn't restore him quite to his Origins glory, but it's much better...

Blackwall, Warden of the North - I just couldn't stand his beard. I'm sorry.

Lady Josephine's Outfit Retextures & Lady Josephine Complexion - I picked blush for the outfit and gold for the headband and jewelry under her complexion. It gives her soft brown eyes and a much more fun and romantic outfit detailing!

Dark Knight Cullen - The outfits are fun but I really appreciated the complexion retextures here! I liked it best with the scars and the DA2 beard.

The Wolf - Darker Solas Retexture - Self-explanatory, and it's a gorgeous labor of love.

Refined Varric - He just looked a little too grungy for me. Sorry grungy Varric lovers, the vanilla complexions in this game are too oily.

Refined Vivienne - Fell in love with this mod the second I saw it; I love the makeup and contours it adds to her face, very striking and very VIV!

DA2 Cassandra - Very close to her default Inquisition complexion, I just wanted something a little more familiar.

C.A.R.P. Concept Art Sera Overhaul - New complexions and face textures + hairstyle that causes Sera to more closely resemble her concept art design.

Royal Retextures - Retextured outfits for Celene, Florianne, Gaspard, and Briala at the Winter Ball. (BTW if anyone can send me the link for the Briala mod that overhauls her whole design. Throw it my way)

New Outfits for Human Female - Wanted a mod that overhauls the default Skyhold PJs and found one that didn't make my poor Trevelyan stand around with his tits out or in lacy lingerie. Features some mixed armor between Vivienne and Cassandra and Flemeth's outfit.

LL Inquisition Faction - Mod that recolors all of the Inquisition heraldry into a green/black/gold scheme. Includes optional files for retextured furniture and Halamshiral finery.

Inquisition Branded Finery - I opted NOT to use the finery from the above mod and selected the white/emerald one here. There are other cute color options too!

Just say you don’t understand the art of filmmaking/cinematography and have no media literacy and go. Forget about media literacy, how about media curiosity? Literally one of the most meaningful and telling aspects of any film or show is the lighting and the costume choices! “It really doesn’t matter if he has a yellow or blue shirt, it fits into the composition, that’s it, moving on.” WHAT?! Of course it matters. Why wouldn’t it matter? Costume choices are not meaningless. If I still shipped Megan Fox, I would be analyzing the hell out of the cinematography during their scenes and geeking out over the smallest lighting details, but so many melon waters are anti-this kinda stuff, and it’s so so weird.

This is the OPPOSITE of a galaxy brain take. Why does every Macadamia Nut Cookie say stuff like this? It goes beyond a shipping war to a weird lack of respect for the art form.

“But it’s nothing substantial. It’s so random.” NO, NO, NO IT’S NOT. It literally never is. Writers, musicians, game designers, painters, filmmakers, playwrights, photographers, poets- LITERALLY EVERY ARTIST EVER- pour their heart and soul into their creations and put SO MUCH thought into symbols and details, especially in a show like Stranger Things. If I were the Duffer Brothers and spent time, money, and effort working with my cinematographers to craft the story of Byler, only to have people hand wave it all away, I would be fuming! Stranger Things isn’t a simple sitcom.

“Most stuff is made glaringly obvious, so everyone gets it.” Well good thing people ARE getting it. Imagine thinking something like the final shot, with the couples standing in formation and El standing apart from them, means nothing.

Here he is, everybody! My fursona!

His name is Krieg, and he’s a hybrid of a striped hyena and a dragon. Honestly, for quite a while, my fursona (or I guess scalesona) was just a dragon, but I was rethinking things lately. I was trying to figure out why the dragon didn’t quite seem like the right fit anymore, and wondering what was. I still love dragons, and they still have a special connection in my soul, but I thought for a long time on it, and came to only one conclusion.

Hyenas are my soul, just like dragons have been for a long time. Both are very misunderstood creatures in a lot of ways, and.. so am I. I am autistic, and have ADHD, and I have felt for a long time that I have a hard time being properly understood. I struggle to communicate in the way people want me to. On top of that, I’m a trans-man and just trying to understand myself.

That’s why Krieg is so important to me. He is the truest expression of me, and gives me the confidence to just be myself. I may not quite fit in right with my hyena ‘clan’, and I don’t quite fit among dragons either. But there’s a place for misfits like me, and I’m glad I’ve found it now.

Been working on my Light Gaia/Dark Gaia swap Au. So here are some quick random things and thoughts about it.

So y’know with Dark Gaia energy Sonic got taller.

And Dark and Light are opposites.

Wouldn’t Light Gaia energy make him smaller-

I’m thinking of making Light Gaia the villain because I feel like it would be cool. Or I would make Dark and Light Gaias both villains that are in a war. I’m leaning more towards Light and Dark Gaias as the villains since this fanfic with the same idea as I had originally planned to make Light Gaia villain. But I wanna be original so ig war idea lol.

Dark Gaia acts as the chip in this story for sure and their name is Waffle. They still eat the Chocolate Chip Sundae Supreme as in Unleashed but Waffle just preferred the waffle cones so Sonic gave her that name.

Here’s a fun fact about the creation of this Au. It started out with me and my friend playing mc and discussing how we would rewrite Sonic Unleashed. I asked what if Sonic absorbed Light Gaia energy instead and here we are. I would link his acc but he doenst want to be tagged.

Since I recently got CSP Ex and a good drawing tablet from my b-day Im currently planning on making it a comic. But with a fanfic too! Fanfic for early story things and comic for art!

To answer the most important question. Yes Sonic is basically a fluff ball. And yes he’s tiny in his Light Gaia form.

Last thing for tn. Silver just woke up one day saw the world covered in Eggman Land merch and parks. Then time traveled to find Sonic to warn him. Then crashed into Prof. Pickles’ office screaming: “GUYS THE WORLD IS FREAKING SPLIT APART AND IS COVERED IN EGGMAN CRAP IN TGE FUTURE! AND, WHAT HAPPENED TO SONIC???? WAS I TOO LATE?”

Poor Silver had a panic attack.

the dichotomy of the sovereign is this: the myth and the man, working in tandem, and contending in opposition. statecraft is the construction of the former and reconstruction of the latter. this is devised mythology, a god on a shrine, but this shrine is a machine, held up by the institution. as ren looks out the grand window port that stretches over the steel wall of the ship, his eyes trace over a thousand distant stars divulged ahead, gleaming with their power which cowers still before his. they would fall under his jurisdiction, too, in due time, with the entirety of the galaxy united under one reign. in his thoughts, he sometimes imagines they had fashioned him a metaphorical mask out of shards, to replace the one he could not wear — the supreme leader whose war expands past the streets of the core regions into darker depths, in the name of valour and order. the terror of the first order, with his mystic powers and dark agenda, whom the furthest of civilizations fear & revere. thus, this myth is a construction and it is owed most in its entirety to the chancellor. had it not been such a masterful manoeuvre, a plaster over the past, ren would not have entertained the effort that had gone into its creation.

the blastdoors hiss open, though ren's back remains turned. he does not look, but he feels the familiarity of the chancellor's presence, the cut of him, the flourish of his cape. he knows the faint light of the stars catches in the embellishments of his sleeves. he'd grown accustomed to it all; the when of this evades him. we will be preparing for landing soon, he hears hux inform, their destination set before them, to meet with the noble families of eriadu. ren adjusts his cuffs, ❝ i saw you had outlined talking points for me. ❞ he says, motioning toward his holopad strewn across the table. ❝ their loyalties had lain firmly with the emperor before the fall... i wonder what they expect to see in my attendance. ❞

George Lucas has built up a lot of mythology around Star Wars. Not in the series proper, but stories and myths around the creation of it. A lot of it isn't true, and one particular story has been stuck in my brain.

"Harrison Ford was a carpenter on/near the set when George Lucas saw him and cast him as Han Solo".

The idea is that Harrison Ford just happened to be lucky and he made the best of a rare opportunity. The actual story is not nearly as neat and tidy as this.

Harrison Ford was already an actor, having been in The Conversation and American Graffiti. The former was nominated for 3 oscars (won 0, but it was up against The Godfather Part II so it had no chance) and the latter was directed by... George Lucas.

Fred Roos was assisting with casting and had also worked with Harrison Ford before. He told George that Harrison Ford would be great for Han Solo but George didn't want to reuse actors from American Graffiti. Fred knew he did carpentry work when he wasn't acting so he arranged for Harrison Ford to have a job doing carpentry for Francis Ford Coppola's office. It just so happened that the casting for Star Wars was down the hall from there.

And then while casting was happening, Fred saw his friend Harrison Ford and told George it would be a good idea to have him read opposite the potential actors.

And then Fred talked about how great this Harrison Ford guy was and maybe he should be Han Solo after all.

This isn't a story about how Harrison Ford became lucky. This is the story of how Fred Roos cleverly got the casting he wanted.

All movies are collaborative efforts, and the idea that one person has a vision that must be executed perfectly is basically a myth. Even Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish director that makes black and white art films, has said in interviews that he basically could never tell Max Von Sydow to do anything and the The Seventh Seal was a collaborative effort. In some cases it's just two people butting heads until one prevails. Hitchcock didn't want any music during the shower scene in Psycho but Bernard Herrmann added it anyways. Hitchcock just had to admit he was right and basically doubled his salary.

I just don't want people to think this story is about hating George Lucas. He's got faults but I think people have retroactively decided that the film had to be saved by other people and that just isn't true. He is guilty of doing lots of weird stuff like claiming that he wrote 9 stories and started with the 4th one (A New Hope didn't have the Part IV until after the original run) or re-editing the film to have Greedo shoot first and claiming it was always supposed to be like that, but he knew how to direct a movie.

Originally it was I had wanted to learn how to like, legit paint things and techniques and blah blah blah.

Clearly that was not what I felt in my soul to do, so.

The point is, I'm fucking high. My child isn't home so this is one of a few times a year I can really fucking let go of all the bullshit that's happening in the world and just....create.

I miss her every day but I want to reread House of Leaves. It was THE book for me. A mixture of physical art (print book with the different colors and weird ass pages and shit) and an actually intense, just edging on the short of nightmareish and creepy pasta. Like the line of it. just creepy pasta, but make it art.

That's the kinda book I want to write. And I want it to be about my fucking self because fuck you, I may have main character syndrome but I write my own story. You gave me the bare vibes to work with in the colors.

I get to fucking choose how much of each color is present in the artwork and it can be this random mess of colors or I can do something as simple as this:

3/22/24: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." This week's character from my anthro WWII storyline is Sergeant Major Revell (no first name ever given), with peaked cap (top drawing) and with garrison cap (bottom drawing). He's a largely undeveloped character from the previous reboot; pretty much all I know of him is he's antagonistic toward Camo and Drake for some unexplained reason, and seems mentally unstable. Lots of room for development. There'll be more about him later in my art Tumblr and Toyhou.se.

Regarding his design, I decided he's a Great War veteran, so gave him some signs of that--facial scars and a prosthetic ear. His eyes are a weird yellowy color and I wanted to give him an unusual fur pattern featuring dark contrasting colors, originally planned to be gold with a black muzzle, but I thought he'd look too much like a German shepherd.

TUMBLR EDIT: Sgt. Maj. Revell appears in the 2002 character list of the first reboot as such:

REVELL: Sergeant-major; Camo's main source of opposition in starting the Trench Rats battalion. Cynical and confrontational; may also be somewhat unbalanced, with his sometimes bizarre behavior. Detests Sgt. Evans for helping Camo out, and takes out his anger on his subordinates. Has been accused of more unsavory acts, which have not been substantiated. Most of the soldiers try to avoid him, not always with success. Appears in prequel

Revell was mainly intended as an obstacle to the creation of the Trench Rats, on the American side. He's the primary reason Gunnery Sgt. Evans ends up having to grant an uneasy favor for Sgt. Irene Beaudry to obtain her support with Maj. Dupries and other higher-ups. Evans, Beaudry, Dupries, and Revell, who appear only in the first part of the first story arc, Genesis (which, weirdly, is the storyline presented second), and MAYBE make a brief appearance at the very end of Reunion or a small appearance in Ultima Thule--meaning they hardly appear in the story as a whole--were thus never really developed. I lost interest in them. Welp, time to dust them all off.

I just went and did a search of a piece of early (undated, likely pre-2000) writing of mine, The Trench Rats: The Beginning, which was an unfinished early version of Genesis, as I thought it made brief reference to Evans and Dupries and their roles, though I don't recall ever writing about Revell. The text actually makes no mention of them, so, I won't include any here. EDIT--ahaha, oh, WAIT. I just now found a major character change! Dupries IS in the text...just that he's named DEVRIES. Somewhere along the way, his name changed! I have no explanation for this, aside from maybe I didn't like the ambiguous pronunciation of "DeVries" (I mistakenly thought it was French--turns out it's Dutch--so in the text I say most people pronounce it "Devree," which appears to be incorrect), so I dumbed it down. I already have a Dupries family in my Manitou Island fiction, so maybe I'll end up changing it back to DeVries. Could use some more Dutch representation in my work. Anyway, he's the only one of these four to be included in the text, and I still won't excerpt any here as it adds nothing to this entry plus it's ferkin' stupid. I apparently never got around to writing about Evans, Beaudry, or Revell, not even in an unnamed fashion. ("DeVries" interacts with a few other unnamed officers in the text but none quite fit Revell's description, and the two sergeants are completely absent.) So, okey-doke, my source texts are now exhausted, so here we go.

Obviously, early on I intended Revell to be mentally unhinged in some way. I'm thinking he could be sort of an American counterpart of the French Champere, who in this newest reboot is suffering from some sort of religious delusions which have made him rather fanatical and influence his decisions. Difference is, Champere genuinely believes he's doing good, and ultimately he aids the Trench Rats, though he's pretty contentious at first and his actions are often contradictory and indecipherable; whereas Revell is just downright spiteful and malicious. He seems to have no moral guidelines, however bizarre, driving his behavior. He is mean and hateful and driven to sabotage everything Sgt. Camo and Cpl. Drake do. As for WHY this is, or what specifically motivates him...I don't know that yet. If he's truly mentally ill, he doesn't even need a reason. That doesn't make for dramatic plot, though, so I'll assume he has a reason, he just hasn't told me what it is yet.

One particular line has stuck in my head; Revell privately corners Drake and in a very soft but grating voice, says right into his face, "Make no mistake. I can put you into the ground...and no one would ever find you." What is the context, exactly, of this quote? I don't know. I can't even say with certainty whether Revell is antisemitic or not, though even if he is, I don't believe that's his primary motivation, as he despises Camo--and by extension, Evans and possibly Dupries--too. For some reason, he does not want the idea of the Trench Rats battalion to go forward, so this involves attempting to intimidate Drake (who is rattled, yet tries brushing it off).

I just mentioned Revell despising Evans "by extension," meaning he's just a secondary target of Revell's hatred, yet this is a possible theory. What if Evans is actually the source, and Camo, Drake, and their plans for the battalion are instead the focus of Revell's hatred by extension...? Meaning I'd need to determine the cause of the rift between Revell and Evans, not between Revell and the Trench Rats. Interesting possibilities here--a homophobic angle, perhaps? Especially given the old character list's reference to unsubstantiated "unsavory acts." I seem to recall that this comment was intended to be sexual in nature, though it was purposely kept vague, and as Evans's orientation was unknown at the time, that could not have been related in any way. So it was something else probably involving women, or children. (Urgh...yeah.) The characters have developed since then, so Evans is a potential target. OR...Evans possibly KNOWS about said "unsavory acts"...and that could be the source of Revell's hatred. Evans might have been an unsuccessful whistleblower of a sort and is forced to continue working in association with Revell afterward despite the obvious conflicts (similar to how PFC Klemper's and Sgt. Lange's units continue working alongside each other for a time following Lange's attempted assault of Klemper), and Revell's reaction is to try to tank the entire Trench Rats plan which Evans supports.

SO...as you can see...lots of undeveloped potential here.

...I just had to step away for about an hour, and new possibilities have arisen. Revell is a Great War veteran, and may be vaguely familiar with Camo from there, though it's uncertain. Here's a possibility that at least some "unsavory acts" could date back to that time--perhaps Revell is a war criminal. He suffered serious injuries, which I believed as recently as yesterday were related to combat; he has scars on his face, and lost most of an ear, resulting in a prosthetic (unlike Papillon's, it's one much more based on the types of prosthetics and plastic surgery used on survivors of WWI, see HERE for what I mean, also there's an artificial hand there that's pretty nifty in light of my earlier entry about Harrier and Papillon). It could be possible, I suppose, however, that he only claims combat caused these injuries, and maybe he was involved in something more sinister. I do think his experiences in the war helped unhinge him, but if he indeed committed any sort of shady acts it's likely he was just "off" from the start, sort of like Ernst Dannecker. Dannecker has a weird habit of engaging in sexually suggestive dominating gestures toward other males without being gay himself...here's a description from Josef Diamant to Gret Dannecker in an adult WIP, warning that it's a tad objectionable but it's the tamest way to explain it:

"He did other things though, too. A couple of weeks after he came to the barracks--ja, that's how long he waited, before striking again. He was good at holding out, at being patient. I was painting the wall. Not far from where I'd cowered away from him. A few of the others said they saw him walking toward me and knew something bad was coming but nobody said anything, because nobody else wanted to end up where I was. I didn't even hear him coming--he walks...walked...perfectly silently whenever he wanted to. In those shiny, shiny boots. No idea how he did that. I had no idea he was there either until he shoved me against the wall and pressed close. His mouth was right at my ear. 'Guten Tag, Jew,' he said. His breath smelled like cinnamon...so odd. 'You're doing pretty light work today,' he said. 'I thought you were better suited for hard work?' And he...shoved his hips against me." Diamant grimaced. "'I can give you hard work,' he said...grinding against me...and then he just stepped back. 'You missed a spot,' he said, and he gave that little laugh, like he did when he fired his gun at my head, and he walked away. That was all. I stepped back and there was paint on my clothes." He fiddled his fingers between his knees. "I honestly thought...thought he was going to do more. Do worse. Right there in the open and nobody would do or say anything. Of course, I was wrong. Your stepfather was many things but he wasn't eine Schwuchtel. He...had other ways of getting his point across."

Dannecker later forces Diamant and the camp kapo, Isaak Schindel, into a humiliating situation where again Diamant expects him to get off on it, yet he doesn't, it's purely a power/control thing meant to break them. It's possible Revell could share some similar traits (witness his threat toward Drake), though again, I'm unsure. It's also possible that Evans somehow digs up evidence of things Revell did in the war and this could incite Revell's wrath toward him and the Trench Rats. Potential!

One more detail I wanted to get out of the way. Revell isn't a screaming, shouting madman type. He almost always delivers his threats in a soft, understated manner, without needing to raise his (naturally rough/gravelly) voice. This trait comes back to Camo's mind later on in Germany when he comes face to face again with Capt. Otto Himmel. (I say "again," as Camo first encountered Himmel when the latter was a teenager fighting in the Great War, then a second time just after arriving in enemy territory during the current war.) Himmel's throat was cut in a botched attempt on his life, and as a result, he can't raise his voice above a hoarse murmur; usually he just whispers when he speaks. Many people aren't aware of this as he keeps his collar buttoned tight to cover the scar, so his whispery voice is often considered merely a behavioral quirk. (This is never properly explained in the imaginary animated version I mentioned in Turquoise's entry, where Himmel is misrepresented as a purely evil guy and is nicknamed something like the Whispering Captain.) When Camo first hears him speak, it reminds him of Revell, and it prompts an almost visceral reaction; he later on gains a much better reason to detest Himmel (i. e., Anna Julian), but the reminder of another person he despised ensures that he dislikes Himmel from the start.

AND...that there is currently all I really have to say regarding Revell. He's an antagonist whose motivations--and mental state--aren't certain just yet, but you can see I already have some tentative ideas. As time goes on perhaps things will become clearer.
