February 2023 Recap: Read, Played, Watched Listened

February absolutely flew by. One of my goals for this year is to more proactively talk about art that I’m engaging with each month, so here’s a recap, as best I can remember.

I haven’t done as much fiction reading—long form or short form—this month as I wanted to.  I used to be someone who read at least one book and dozens of plays (for work) AND a litany of short stories every single week without fail…and I am very much not that person anymore. So I had to push down a little bit of embarrassment posting what is for past me, a short list. I am reminding myself that my priorities are vast and many, and this is fine, actually.

Not mad about it—we’re in really fun spots in all of these games, and I'm especially proud of the Google Sheets maps I made for the mission the PCs went on in Cyberpunk, which was for the most complex encounter I've ever run. That said, I'd really like to play a one-shot and/or another game I've never played before in the next month.

"BUT WHERE ARE THE 9?"

A Parable of the 10 Philippine Beauties

A certain tycoon in Chicago, a  philanderer, with the initials of B.G., invited 10 beautiful ladies from different provinces of the Philippines including Isabela, Cavite, Laguna, Mountain Province, Pampanga and also from Metro Manila, to come to Chicago, Frank Sinatra's "My Kind of Town".and Carl Sandburg's "City of the Big Shoulders, Hog Butcher for the World, Stacker of Wheat, etc."  This was before President Rodrigo Duterte was elected president of the Philippines.

The ten ladies all gathered together in one group, looking their best (for how often do you get the privilege of being invited to the United States by an American tycoon?!) and met him at his office on the 55th floor of the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower which rises to a height of 1450 ft. and has 108 stories (some of which have never been told!) as stipulated in the invitations.

After interviewing each of them, he gave each lady $10,000 dollars to be spent only at the Oakbrook Mall in Oakbrook, IL, and to limit their shopping to Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom and Tory Burch.  He instructed them to come back to his office after they had spent all the money and show him their “captures"!

So the ten lovely Filipino women were taken to Oakbrook Mall in the tycoon’s limousine.  They then dispersed but with the understanding that they would meet and have lunch at Antico Posto (an Italian restaurant, Antico Posto meaning "The Old Spot" in English).  Unbeknownst to the tycoon was the fact that these ten ladies knew each other and had planned earlier to celebrate the October birthdays of three of the ladies in the group.

After their shopping spree, the ten ladies went to Antico Posto in the Oakbrook Mall and celebrated the birthdays of the three Octoberians and after lunch, sent the youngest lady in the group to go back to B.G., the tycoon, and "tell him that we want to thank him for his generosity, hoping he would get wealthier, so he could invite us again in the future, preferably to New York!”

When the youngest lady arrived at B.G.'s office, the tycoon queried her, "Were there not ten of you ladies that I invited?  But where are the nine?"  He was quite indignant.  ”The nerve they have,” he blurted out in his ire.  "But sir, we were hungry and so we ate lunch at Antico Posto and celebrated the birthdays of three ladies in our group.  Then they sent me to relay their message to you."   And she told him all their good wishes for him!   In a fit of rage, the tycoon picked up a glass ash tray and threw it at the glass window, then keeled over and died of a heart attack.

In the meantime, the nine ladies had loads of fun and laughter during lunch, telling story after story of their shopping adventures and cracking some funny and not-so-funny jokes!   One of them, during the course of their conversation, asked, "What was the name of the guy who invited us and gave us the money?"  Nobody could remember his name!   All of them had instant Alzheimer’s Disease due to a salvo of endorphins that flooded their systems after the fun and laughter and shopping to their hearts' content!

All the ten ladies got married later, some to Filipinos living in the United States who they met or to men they knew back in the Philippines and others to Americans or Asians they met in Chicago.  

And they all lived happily ever after!!!

Note: This parable was written as an adaptation of the story of the ten lepers in the Bible as recorded in Luke 17:11-19, who were healed by the Lord and only one of them came back to thank him.

Tribe News - 27 September 1999

THE TRIBE ON THE WEEKEND On the weekend, Dwayne Cameron (BRAY), Jaimee Kaire-Gataulu (CHLOE), and Sarah Major (PATSY) went home to visit their families before returning to the Cloud 9 production center to resume filming. Victoria Spence`s friend visited and stayed with Victoria at her houseparent and chaperones` house near the Cloud 9 production centre and spent most of the weekend shopping and catching up on news of their friends at Victoria`s school, all of whom are major Tribe fans and very proud that their schoolmate is achieving success as a regular cast member of the Tribe. Beth Allen (AMBER) and Amy Morrison (ZANDRA) remained with their families at their homes while Caleb Ross (LEX) entertained Antonia Prebble (TRUDY), who is staying with the Tribe cast and houseparents while her family visited the South Island. Michael Wesley-Smith (JACK) caught up on school work as did Ashwath Sundarensen (DAL) and Airi (KC) while Ryan Runciman (RYAN) learned his lines and checked out some of the rugby (Ryan is a keen rugby fan). Meryl Cassie (EBONY) spent most of the weekend recording (John Williams and Matt Prime anticipate the completion of the Tribe album in approximately four weeks and we will provide details of the release date so keep checking the website for exclusive information).

THE CHOSEN We have been authorised to reveal that fans of the Tribe throughout the world will be introduced to some new characters in the second series including the Guardian - a mysterious and spiritual leader of the enigmatic Tribe called The Chosen, who become an ominous threat and adversary of the Mall Rats. The Chosen are a breakaway, almost renegade faction of the Locos, inspired by the word of Zoot and throughout the back-story episodes in series 2, fans will note the Guardian under his alias of Jaffa becoming friends with Martin - prior to his incarnation under the persona of Zoot.

DANNI, ALICE, ELLIE In addition to the Guardian/Jaffa, there are other characters introduced in series 2. Obviously storylines are highly confidential, but we have been authorised to reveal as an exclusive to website fans and users, that Alice the humorous farm girl will return along with her sister Ellie, and life for the Tribe will never quite be the same when they encounter these slightly unusual women of the Earth (and as a sneak preview, Jack in particular is destined to feature in the amorous Ellie`s plans). Also, a stunning young lady (Danni) will affect the lives of the Mall Rats and we will reveal more information in later editions on the website so keep checking the Bulletin Board for updates.

TRIBE MUSIC WORLD EXCLUSIVE On Monday 27th September, the cast and crew of Tribe Series 2 attended a premier of the two music videos which were filmed recently, and all concerned were thrilled with the end results. The Cloud 9 post-production team has been busy editing and laying tracks so the finished result was eagerly anticipated by all concerned. One track is entitled "Abe Messiah" and is a spiritual and inspired piece of music which is very different and can only be described as "Tribe rock" featuring a strong gospel element and celebrating the birth of the Abe Messiah. The other track is entitled "This is the Place" and features Dwayne Cameron, Caleb Ross and Daniel James (BRAY, LEX - and yes, ZOOT!) all of whom seem reminiscent to a cross between Boyzone and Backstreet Boys, and their singing and choreography is very impressive. The music video involves some sexy slow dancing between Bray and Danni, Zoot and Trudy, and Lex and Ebony - but this is not relevant to any storyline themes of the Tribe, it is purely visuals to punctuate the song which is very much a love song. Other members of the cast will feature on other music videos as and when the tracks and album have been completed. We have been authorised to reveal that Cloud 9 is currently negotiating to try and make these videos available EXCLUSIVE to members of the Official Tribe Fan Club and more information will be posted when details are known - hopefully long before Christmas so that members of the Fan Club will receive limited editions of the music videos.

MIPCOM Mipcom? This is a global television festival rather like the Cannes Film Festival. MIPCOM is actually held in Cannes in the South of France and members of Cloud 9`s administrative team and the sales team of Cloud 9`s distribution subsidiary, Cumulus, will be attending the festival to discuss several foreign territories acquiring the series, which means that fans of the Bulletin Board on the website will soon be able to chat with viewers all over the world. The Tribe is rapidly evolving into a cult series and has received great critical acclaim as well as very high ratings. This has generated an enormous amount of interest from several broadcasters all over the world from America to Japan, Germany to Italy, and more details will be posted about transmissions in other countries. But as sure as the sun sets and rises again - the world is going Tribal!

CAST APPEARANCE ON TRIBE TALK Victoria Spence (SALENE) appeared on the Bulletin Board last week and had a tremendous response from fans. Victoria (who likes to be called Tori - and never Vicky!) enjoyed chatting with fans about all kinds of topics and areas both on and off-screen. Victoria tried her very best to answer as many messages as she can and apologies to those messages and users whom she could not reply to. Victoria will be appearing on the Bulletin Board later this week to answer messages she was unable to get to last week due to the huge demand. We will be announcing details of the next cast member to appear live and exclusive on Tribe Talk on Monday 4th October.

NOT LONG NOW - NEW TRIBEWORLD! The bigger and even better new Official Tribe Website is in the final stages of testing. Our design team want to make sure that everything runs smoothly and works well on the new website before it goes live and online. The new official site will have all the sections on the existing site but many new ones with loads of exciting info and things to do and many new original areas that have never before appeared on other websites! We anticipate that the new website will be ready early November. Not long now!

Fanfic ask game 80: Which of these AU’s do you find interesting and which ones would you find boring to read or write?

Sam and Tory agree to go to therapy in an S4 AU (as part of the deal that allows Tory back into school) to work on their issues. After having extensive private sessions, they then must go through almost like a weird version of couples therapy. With the two gradually starting to understand/tolerate each other as these new joint sessions go on (even admitting what they respect about the other at times).

Yelena Belova approaches Kate Bishop about going on a mission she can’t do alone (because she needs someone with high society clout like a Bishop to be on the inside). Just not in the way Kate would like - Yelena just wanted to let her know she was going use Shield tech to disguise her face as Kate’s for the infiltration. But when the real Kate shows up anyways, it causes a case of double trouble at a gala filled with ex-hydra agents.

The Shade opens an antique shop in Blue Valley, where he hires Courtney as a sales clerk. But when Court sneaks into a locked room (worried The Shade is slipping back into being a villain), she pricks her finger on an old and rusted camera that takes her picture. The next day, an emo Courtney goes to school and rolls her eyes as she watches Stargirl and the JSA save Blue Valley from a new villain as she catches up with her best friends: Yolanda (who acts more like her pre-S1/pre-Henry self), (a very insecure) Beth, Rick (who’s joyful and running for Class President), (a science class obsessed) Artemis and (a sweet, humble, perky and considerate) Cindy. With all of them no longer remembering being heroes or villains or even having powers. Only for The Shade to confront them, revealing that when Court bled on the Camera of Janus it activated a curse that separated the JSA’s personas into halves altering reality (and their memories as a result). And that if the curse isn’t broken - only the strongest half of each of the JSA will survive. …And he must prepare them to survive/reverse the curse.

For writing…I’ll be honest, probably none. My CK and Stargirl muse is slim to none except for the WIPs I already have, and for the MCU, I’m not sure if I’ll write many fics in that fandom. And as for reading…

For the first and last one, depends on the author. They could be interesting and definitely have some potential, but I’m cautious about Sam & Tory fics in general, and I don’t usually read fantasy AUs (and yes, I’m aware Stargirl is part-fantasy, but it’s more comic-book-superhero than fantasy/curses/etc)

For the second, definitely intriguing, as long as it’s not shippy.

INTERVIEW: Beth Kweeday

Beth Kweeday is an artist based in Liverpool studying fine art at Leeds. Her striking digital pieces feature sexual imagery to The Simpsons, and are available to buy as prints or on other items here.

How would you describe your art practice / yourself as an artist? My art practice is definitely digital art, I used to hate digital pieces because I used to not be able to see much of an artistic element to it and found that it wasn’t a good way of working. I had a graphics tablet sat in my drawer for months before I decided to try it out, and even when I did I hated it because I didn’t understand it! I’m so happy I stuck with it though because it’s been the best outcome possible. To describe myself as an artist I would definitely have to say I’m a stubborn artist, I do things how I want to and very much sculpt my work to how I see best (which is probably why I don’t do uni work very well). I know what I like and how I like it done! How did you find your focus on sex based illustrations? It’s amazing to see artwork celebrating sex work and sexuality! Thank you! I’ve always been a big fan of sexual art, I was always drawn to works by Elizabeth Isley and various tattoo artists like Curt Montgomery and Sewp who use a lot of sexual imagery and knew that was the path I wanted to go down. It took a long time for me to find the confidence to, and it wasn’t something I started doing until my second year of uni despite doing art for years before. I had no idea it would do as well as it did, and I’m so happy that it has become such a huge part of my brand as an artist. It’s so important to me to be able to show my respect for these women who inspire my art so much through my illustrations, as a lot of my pieces are based on women in the sex industry. How have you found the response to your work by tutors and peers? Me and my tutors have butt heads a lot over my work, with me doing a fine art course I understand that they want me to step outside my comfort zone a bit but I think they need to respect that sometimes that doesn’t always work well with certain things. For example, I ended up withdrawing from my interim show because a tutor suggested I blow my illustrations up to a large scale and then lay them out on the floor. And given the basis of my work, it just didn’t sit right with me. I found it really rude, in a way? I don’t know, maybe it was just my stubborn side coming out again. My peers have always been so, so supportive. My course-mates were equally as shocked as I was when I told them about someone suggesting my work be on the floor! I receive a lot of love from everyone around me when it comes to my work, which is really wholesome and uplifting. My boyfriend is my number one fan and has supported me so much with my work, my shop and even does the occasional post office run for me. I have no complaints! Your colour palette is so gorgeous, so sensual and minimal! It’s amazing how you have build such a recognisable look to your work through it. How did you come to it and would you ever explore other colour palettes? Thank you so much! I used to be absolutely terrified of colour, and on some level I still am! I have always wanted to be a black and white tattoo artist, I’ve always only wanted black ink tattoos myself and until recently that’s all I had. Pink was never my colour either, but I accidentally put a pink background on a piece I was working on when I first started drawing digitally and I fell in love with it. That one happy accident has now turned into a staple piece of my whole brand! Through this lockdown I’ve tried using other colours, I am so inspired by @exotic.cancer on instagram and her use of colour in her works but it just didn’t feel as me as my classic black & pink!

Your shop is amazing, I especially love your notebooks. Do you have a favourite item on there and how do you find the experience of running it? Thank you so much! I definitely love my phone cases, I never would have thought that I would be doing anything like it a couple years ago. Opening the shop was so scary, the constant “what if it doesn’t do well” and “what if nobody buys anything” kinds thoughts were trying to hold me back but I was really struggling for money and I thought I may as well give it a go. I had no idea it would do so well so soon, it definitely has bad weeks and good weeks in terms of sales but it’s the best thing I ever did. Nothing could have beat the feeling when I got my first international order, I couldn’t believe it! Now every time I get a new order I’m so excited to see where it’s going to. It certainly needs tidying up and updating a little bit, I’m hoping to have my own website within the next couple months instead of doing it via Etsy so that’s pretty cool. One of my favourites of your works are your drawings of shiny leather boots. What software do you use to create your drawings? I use Procreate on my iPad! This came from my goal to be a tattooer, I have a few friends who are tattoo artists and it was all of their recommendation and it’s been the best thing ever. I used to use a graphics tablet with I set up to my laptop with Sketchbook Pro but this has helped me with my drawings techniques a lot better. What’s your favourite drawing of yours? I love my first butterfly pieces that I did, they did really well and what started my trademark butterflies. I love my Simpsons/song lyrics ones too! I definitely want to carry on that series. And I really like my BDSM Is Not An Excuse For Murder piece, I remember reading about what was happening in the Grace Millane murder trial last year and becoming so enraged by what I was reading so I reacted it to it in the only way I knew how and the reaction was overwhelming, in a good way though!

Does music ever influence your art practice? Yes definitely! Sometimes I’ll be sat doing nothing and a song will come on and there’s my drawing. My Simpsons song/lyrics ones actually came from my petty arse reacting to hearing a girl slag me off in the background of her boyfriends Instagram story saying “Beth makes crazy girls look bad” whatever that’s meant to mean. And it reminded me of Paramore’s I’m Not One of Those Crazy Girls and there it was, and they just kept coming from there! My Girls Girls Girls piece which is actually on my own phone case was inspired by Motley Crüe too. Do you find artwork is a good platform to discuss politics? Oh yes absolutely, I’ve learnt so much through artists discussing their political views via their platforms, such as Florence Given. Plus I love a good anti-Tory artwork, I link it with my own as and where I can! It’s important to remind people of things like this as much as possible, even if it means writing Boris Johnson Shags Crisps in the sky every once in a while. I love your trademark butterflies, have they always been a part of your practice and do they symbolise anything for you? The butterflies where a very spare of the moment thing, I remember I finished a piece and was thinking that it just needed something else and I couldn’t for the life of me think what it was and then I just thought I would give it a go. I think using them within BDSM based work is cool because it’s almost like two opposites, you have something so delicate and fragile resting on something most people (unfortunately) deem as aggressive, and obscene. Kind of saying it’s important not to judge a person on their sexual preferences too, just because someone, particularly a woman, is into this certain thing, doesn’t mean that she is any less of a woman than someone who isn’t. If that makes sense.

Who are a few artists that inspire you and your work? (Can be artists of any kind not just visual) My main inspirations are digital artists and tattooists, such as ripbambi, skyeknotart, exotic.cancer, chimaera, my good friend Molly (titzandbitzz), the sad amish tattooer, I love Alex May Hughes and her gold plated Simpsons pieces, she was one of the main reasons I started doing my own. Your Simpson’s drawings are so iconic, do you have a favourite that you’ve done and why do you think they get such an incredible response from people? Thank you! I love my Fuck Boris and Fuck the Tories ones, as well as my lyrical pieces too. I just love the Simpsons so much and I started doing those pieces just as a bit of fun and to keep my work a bit different to the more sexualised pieces. I had no idea they would do as well as they have been doing! Bouncing between sex and the Simpsons is my ideal career in art and it’s something I plan on doing for a very long time. Finally, what are some ways we can support you as an independent creative during these difficult times? To be honest, every like/comment/share I get on a piece is to me a huge support. I understand that buying art is not always an option for some people, I try and keep my prices as low as possible as I want to be able to cater for everyone. I am so lucky to have really understanding customers, as this pandemic has been a strain on my shop but everyone’s been so patient and helpful. Instagram is a great way to show support for an artist, I myself try to share as much art as I can. I’ve been introduced to so many amazing artists just by seeing a piece shared on someone else’s story! It helps a lot and it’s so easy to do

In mid January, the current junior class began preparing for the annual Jackson Prep Garage Sale. The sale, which has been going on for several years now, has become a popular event among those in the Jackson area, and it has even become popular among some from as far as Gulfport, MS due to the wide variety of furniture, electronics, clothes, toys, and trinkets that it displays for sale.

Traditionally, funds raised from the sale pay the prom fees of those juniors who participate in the garage sale by getting their 10 required volunteer hours for helping to collect, move in, set up, and/or price a variety of items donated by the Prep community. This will be the case for the funds raised this year as well. Because it is favored by parents as well as the community and allows the junior class to work together towards a common goal before their senior year, GLI Director Colonel Merrell described the garage sale as a “win, win, win.”

Co chairs for the event are juniors Alex Gibbs and Parker Williams. Assisting them in the management of a variety of tasks such as large item pickup, staging/security, cleanup, signs, finance, etc. are leaders Nora Beth Hetzel, Chandler Usry, Matt Mills, Reece Davis, Spence Graves, JP Guilbeau, Emory Maxwell, Will Fletcher, Robert Jordan, Katie Simmons, Amanda Roberts, Gabbi Ferreri, Jordan Headley, Tori Newsome, David Purvis, and Caroline McIntyre.

The garage sale will be open in the Manning Center on Saturday March 3 from 5 AM to 11 AM, though it is said that lines have formed outside of the center as early as 2 AM in past years. From 5 to 7 AM, general admission is $5, and after 7 AM, admission will be free. On the day before the sale (i.e. Friday March 2), juniors and faculty will be able to shop the sale free of charge from 3-5 PM.

Any items remaining after 11 AM on Saturday will be donated to Goodwill. Cleanup crews will be responsible for loading items onto the two Goodwill trucks scheduled to arrive at the end of the event.

Prep’s current GLI Assistant Director Mrs. Sharon Box commented on the efforts of the junior class in their preparation for the sale thus far. She said, “I think the juniors have worked very well as a class to make this a successful event this year.”

Candy Spelling Throws Extravagant Bel-Air Baby Shower for Daughter Tori Following Past Estrangement

Tori Spelling’s baby shower was nothing short of amazing!

On Sunday, the actress enjoyed a lavish celebration ahead of welcoming her fifth child with husband Dean McDermott.  And, despite their often-strained relationship, the star’s mom, Candy Spelling, threw the beautiful bash at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, California.

The decadent party was helmed by celebrity party planner Mindy Weiss who managed to fulfill one of her décor dreams.

“Loving our baby shower today! My dream to have a moving train go around the table!” Weiss wrote alongside a video of the impressive prop on Instagram.

In addition to trains, the table also featured miniature first-aid kits, baby blue velvet napkins, enough flowers to open a floral shop and coffee cups, “cause there’ll be no sleeping in that home!”

Baby number five isn’t the only new addition to the family. Tori recently took to social media to share a portrait with newcomer Nutmeg -- a pet pig!

The actress had been on the waitlist with Oink Oink Mini Pigs and was overjoyed when she received notification that Nutmeg had entered the world in October and would soon join her family.

“I literally squealed with excitement,” she shared on her blog. “Maybe not the ideal timing with my baby due so soon, but all babies are blessings whenever they come into your life! Nutmeg is so sweet and such a great addition to our family! My babies absolutely love her! Welcome to the family Nutmeg!”

My music taste developed when I was quite young, having access to a lot of material due to my Dad working as a mobile DJ on the side of his day job. I used to spend all my spare time recording mixtapes from my Dad's huge collection of 7" singles and LPs.

My first single was "Shoop" by Salt-N-Pepa and "No Good (Start The Dance)" by The Prodigy on cassette. It wasn't until I started my first job - a paper-round, that I could afford to upgrade to CDs and purchase them on a regular basis. I inherited the love of spending hours browsing in Happy Daze - the last independent record shop before HMV swooped in. I was often drawn to albums based purely on the album artwork, anything quirky, eye-catching or different tended to lead me in the direction of electronic music, which is one of the main dominating genres in my collection.

My tastes have since broadened exponentially, which I find is often the case when listening to so much music. It leads you into streams and tributaries, nooks and crannies, meandering round oxbow lakes and flowing down mountains, a multiverse of weird and wonderful sounds.

Between 1994--2000, I was 13--19 years old. These are the top 40 albums that had a significant and/or inspirational impact on me (in order by most listened to/tentative favourites):
