In entirely unexpected, but welcome news, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has just announced that Facebook and Instagram will now prioritise free expression.
Rather than simply pay lip service to the idea, Zuckerberg has outlined—in rather emphatic fashion—just exactly what he intends to do. You can watch the video below:
Some key points:
📌 'Fact-checkers' are too politically biased and will be replaced by a community notes function, similar to ‘X’.
📌 They are going to get rid of "out of touch" restrictions on discussing topics like 'immigration' and 'gender'.
📌 Political content will no longer have its visibility reduced.
📌 The trust and safety team will be moved from California to Texas to combat perception of political bias.
📌 They will work with President Trump to pushback on any foreign Governments that attempt to pressure American companies to censor content.
📌 Europe is noted for having "laws, institutionalizing censorship and making it difficult to build anything innovative there".
I always retain no small amount of cynicism when a large corporate entity pivots in this manner. I suspect it's less likely a new found commitment to principle, but rather an adjustment based on what is now good for business.
It seems the general public does not like to be told what they can say or think about certain issues, with ‘gender’ and ‘immigration’ being singled out here. It's now interesting to hear Zuckerberg essentially admit that his platform has been censoring people for what he now understands to be ‘mainstream’ opinions.
Either way, it cannot be denied that this is a very welcome development.

Today’s statement from Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram, among other things), is a remarkable cultural artifact. If Zuckerberg means even half of what he says in it, we may well be seeing a genuine shift in how Silicon Valley regards free speech, dissent, and pluralism.
As NBC notes:
Zuckerberg said that Meta will end its fact-checking program with trusted partners and replace it with a community-driven system similar to X’s Community Notes.
But it is how this is to be done that is so interesting. In his address, Zuckerberg announced that his moderation teams would be moved from California to Texas; he mentioned “immigration” and “gender” as two topics on which those who enforce Meta’s rules had proven to be out of touch with the American middle; he suggested that “the recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech”; and he distinguished between “social media” and “legacy media.” Indirectly referencing Blackstone, he concluded by accepting that “we’re going to catch less bad stuff, but we’ll also reduce the number of innocent people’s posts and accounts that we accidentally take down.”
These are no weasel words. Nor can Zuckerberg wriggle out of them without his reversal being obvious. In essence, Zuckerberg just told his company and its peers that they are living in a censorious bubble, and that they are at serious risk of becoming exiles in the country they supposedly serve.
Certainly, some of what Zuckerberg said is the product of competition from Elon Musk’s X, and of a desire to stay on the right side of figures in both parties who would like to break up companies such as Meta. But that doesn’t change the fact that the pressure to which he’s responding is real, and nor does it make his description of his staff’s parochialism any less true. For more than a decade now, many people within both social media and “legacy media” have attempted to use their power to end debate on a host of important democratic issues. This has failed — and spectacularly so. Even if one regards Zuckerberg’s shift as a purely cynical surrender, performed by a malleable and amoral cipher, one ought to be pleased at the impetus that provoked it. Something is changing out there — and changing for the better.

Two Weeks to go before newly elected President of the United States (US) Donald Trump sits into Power and changes are already happening for the better. One is when the US Company "Meta Platforms Incorporated" surprisingly announced recently that it is ending its "Fact Checking Program" on its Social Media Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Threads, and replacing it with a Community driven System similar to what is being done at another Social Media Platform, "X".
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that the move was done as they are now prioritizing more Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Speech. Zuckerberg is also likely trying to repair his Company's Relations with Trump, who was banned on Facebook in 2021.
This again is a very big blow to the Pinklawans, who have been dominating the Fact Checking Program on Faceboook in the Philippines. This also shows how big a difference is Trump from the Liberal Democrats in the US who the Pinklawans are allied with and bow to.
I think this will make Facebook a lot more interesting than it is now, and will lessen the Shadow Banning of ordinary Pages and Accounts just because they are not allied to the Pinklawans and the Liberal Democrats.

So I'm reading Mark Bankston's depo of Elon that he took a couple of weeks ago, and it seems like Elon's Big Defense against this case is that, in the post where he alleged that an unrelated young adult was involved in a street-fight on behalf of a neo-nazi group, it's okay because he @'d community notes. and so communitynotes would take care of this, and whether or not the information was accurate is inconsequential, because communitynotes would eventually come up with a correct verdict.
so Mark, naturally, asks if Elon thinks that everyone who saw his original tweet would then come back to ascertain the validity of the information, and Elon agrees. then Elon's annoying lawyer objects for the 30th time to try derail things, and when that doesn't work we get to this glittering gem (A is elon, Q is mark):

Unfortunately,
@CommunityNotes
is increasingly being gamed by governments & legacy media.
Working to fix this …
It should be utterly obvious that a Zelensky-controlled poll about his OWN approval is not credible!!
If Zelensky was actually loved by the people of Ukraine, he would hold an election. He knows he would lose in a landslide, despite having seized control of ALL Ukrainian media, so he canceled the election.
In reality, he is despised by the people of Ukraine, which is why he has refused to hold an election. I challenge Zelensky to hold an election and refute this. He will not.
President Trump is right to ignore him and solve for peace independent of the disgusting, massive graft machine feeding off the dead bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.
@amuse
Subscribe
UKRAINE: Claims that Zelensky has an approval rate of 57% are from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology which received USAID funding for its polling. It is run by a VERY patriotic Ukrainian named Anton Hrushetskyi. It is unlikely the polling is credible. The US intel community estimates support at around 4% which is the number Trump has been citing. Don't bet against Trump.

what's also sickening is when people in palestine (particularly gaza) struggle to find an internet connection so they can post about what they are actively witnessing, with their own eyes, sometimes even including graphic images and videos, and they get called a liar
i saw a doctor in gaza who was able to access to internet to tell people that the hospital he was in, al-ahli hospital, had just been bombed. he is a DOCTOR in GAZA in PALESTINE who has to see the most horrific wounds and casualties every day. and israel's followers were in the replies trying to argue with him that, actually, israel didn't hit the hospital, obviously it was hamas. (this was debunked, though it really shouldn't have to be.) i saw someone reply to his tweet with just "@ CommunityNotes." witnessing fucking genocide happen right in front of your eyes to people whose wounds you have to try to treat doesn't need a fucking twitter community note.
israel spends most of their time throwing fits and arguing on the internet like your average racist teenager while they continue to bomb and terrorize palestine. palestine spends most of their time wondering if they'll live to see tomorrow. israel is beyond any ounce of redemption or forgiveness and i hope i, and many palestinian survivors, live to see it crumble under the weight of its lies and atrocities.

#Musk and #TFG and the #MAGA masses are so accustomed to lying and getting away with it, they just spew meaningless garbage without a care in the world? Something now immediately contradicts something said a week or so ago? Who cares! It’s not like anyone gives a damn, anyway, and if they do there’s nothing they can do to stop it, so again… who cares!
Take #Xitter’s #CommunityNotes as an example. They were great because Musk didn’t need to pay people to keep toxic shit off the Official Social Network of Shitposting® because the “community” would handle that. But now that those same notes are being “gamed” by filthy libs, “he” is going to have to “fix” them, so I guess not the bestest anymore?
These 20G 90º turns at speed are quite jarring. #socialmedia #tech #capitalism #fascism arstechnica.com/tech-poli…
