bruins hrpf recs from the server #1
What's that you ask? Why, it's a weekly fic rec list for bruins hrpf, brought to you by our humble server! We start with the theme of✨ self-recs ✨ to kick things off:
And In Flu Enza by @confusion-is-wonderful || various, team ensemble || 12,655 words
(and we no longer need to run) let’s not fight what’s in our blood by @fvcking-damage || marcheron || 94,775 words || author's note: longest thing i’ve ever written (so far!) and i had a lot of fun writing it. i wrote it with so much love and it’s a bit personal to me, how i reflected some of the things i’ve gone through into this story and through magic, it’s one close to my heart
BAM-BAM by @gaybroons || cambrick || 1,103 words || author's note: it is a very silly “stuck in wall” trope, and I feel like I had fun with it! :)
finally i feel like i have a home here by fvcking-damage || marcheron || 21,257 words || author's note: i like this one because even though it’s one of the first things i wrote, i love it so much! it was a trip rescuing this wip and reworking it for a completely different fandom— and making it work! i love taking things slow and making these two fall in love
I'm Losing the Feeling by @thebluejayawe || marcheron & team ensemble || 4,301 words || author's notes: ~,,,,I go back and reread this. This is a self promo of truth, I reread my own work and enjoy it sm. This whole fic was written for my exact interests. I’m vaguely happy more than me enjoys it
Love and Marriage by @blindbatalex || willypasta || 11,749 words || author's note: this fic is dear to me not only bc it pushed the boundaries of my abilities at the time but also bc i allowed myself to be as silly and self-indulgent as i wanted for once - and who doesn't want to see willy get adopted by the bruins vets ;)
Sweet by anonymous || marcheron || 15,559 words || author's note: i like it because it is about how everything is about sex except sex which is about being hungry.
take my hand by blindbatalex || marcheron || 7,670 words || author's note: person who thinks they are doomed only to underestimate just how much they are loved is like catnip to me!! besides i had a blast with the worldbuilding and the magic here.
They'd find us in a week (I’d be home with you) by @gaybroons || swaymark || 1,686 words || author's note: it was the very first fic I wrote!!! Opened the flood gates. Will always be special to me <3 there’s this one scene where sway is being hand fed berries that I really like, personally.
(we won't break, we won't die) it's just a moment of change by @munch4march || marcheron || 12,531 words || author's note: i love this one bc it's a 5+1 which is one of my favorite formats, but the 5 and the 1 are lowkey just little individual fics in themselves of brad contemplating the captaincy and the weight that comes with it while patrice is there for him. i think it's sweet
Wild Horses by @thebluejayawe || marcheron || 13,331 words || author's notes: ~I’m absurdly proud of this particular part of the series. Like. I feel like it’s some of my best writing and it was so long ago 😭I want back what I haddd

nothing to be afraid of (sidgeno | 5k | outside pov | friendship | kris & sid & geno)
Kris waits until Sid's safely out of earshot. Then he puts on an excited, high-pitched voice. "Geno, Geno," he repeats under his breath. It breaks Max and Duper, who cackle like a pair of hyenas. "You're mean," Flower complains, like he's not stifling a snicker of his own. (assorted halloweens with the pittsburgh penguins)
i'm so excited to reveal the spookyfest fic i wrote for @thebluejayawe for the @sidgenospookyfest exchange. a huge thank you to the mods who ran yet another great event and to all the writers featured in this year's fantastic collection. go check the fics out if you haven't yet (and especially check out this really beautiful fic which i was incredibly lucky to receive as a gift!).

FAQ, Offers, Requests, and Mod info
FAQ:
Do I have to have an AO3/tumblr account to participate?
All participants need an AO3 account and an email where we can reach you.  If you don’t have an account at AO3, request an invite from directly from the Archive or contact the mods.
How do I sign-up?
Click on sign-up form. Think of each request as a description of a fic you want. Tag each request with the pairing you'd like and make sure to have any Do Not Want's (DNW's) listed for each pairing. For example if you'd prefer no genderswap/rule 63 or no smut, make sure this is written under each pairing these DNW's apply to.
For offers (remember you have to offer three, but you can offer up to 10!) please put pairings that you would be okay with creating for, but also remember to put things you will not write. For example, if you are not a smut writer, please put that under every offer - this helps the mods when checking matches, so that way we will not match up a mainly PWP request with a writer who doesn't write any spicy scenes.
Can I use a WIP to complete my assignment?
As long as it follows the requested prompt and hasn’t been posted anywhere else, sure! Adding a chapter to an already posted chaptered fic does not count as a fulfillment of your assignment.
What if the pairing I want to request/write is not included in the tag set?
You can nominate them. Go to the tag set and click the "Nominate" button at the top. The process is not instantaneous; the mods will have to go through the nominations and approve them. Please be patient as we do.
Can I edit my sign-up after I submit it?
Yes! You can edit your sign-up until they close.
Can I produce more than one work?
Yes, definitely! Once you’ve completed your assignment, feel free to create another work for your assigned person or you can check out this spreadsheet with people who’ve listed ships and tropes for treats!
Can a work for this fest also be used to fulfill another exchange assignment?
Not for this fest, sorry. But feel free to use unfilled prompts for other exchanges and fests once the Bruins Fic Exchange is over.
Can I archive-lock my fic?
Yes! Because of the amount of fourth-wall breaking, Mods do encourage this.
Do treats and additional fics also have to be at least 1000 words?
No. They can be as few or as many words as you want. Only your primary fill has to be at least 1000 words.
What’s a dear-author letter? Do I have to have one?
A dear author letter is a semi-public document where you can add more detail to your likes, dislikes, and prompts (want an example? Look here and here). You do not have to have one to sign-up.
What are treats?
A treat of a fic or piece of art for you by someone who is not your assigned writer.
How do I sign-up for treats?
In your sign-up, you will be asked if you would like to receive potential treats for this prompt. You can mark yes or no. You do not have to sign up to write treats. You can just look at the spreadsheet and see if any prompts move your muses.
Signing up for treats is not mandatory to participate in this exchange.
Something’s come up and I cannot complete my assignment. What do I do?
Please contact the mods as soon as possible. If you need to drop out for any reason at all, please let us know as soon as possible (ideally by the check-in date). We totally understand that life happens, and all we ask for is as much time as possible to find a pinch-hitter for your recipient!
I’m not sure my fic idea or pairing will be within the rules for this exchange. What should I do?
Contact the mods! We’ll help walk you through it.
.
How do we contact you? Who are you people?
Meet the brilliant and slightly deranged minds running the exchange!

AO3 Statistics Game
Tagged by@bryndeavour - thank you friend, this was so much fun!
Rules: Give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits, Most kudos, Most comments, Most bookmarks, Most words, and Least words.
my categories are clustered so don't mind if me if i cheat just a liiitle.
MOST HITS, KUDOS, BOOKMARKS Love and Marriage - David P.astrnak/William N.ylander - 11, 749 words - hockey rpf. it is still absolutely wild to me that my most popular fic, with almost 500 kudos, is something i wrote for a rarepair exchange where i was expecting to get 10 kudos and a corn chip maybe. but rough as this fic is in places i put my heart and soul into it and wrote what i wanted to read, and that really resonated with people i think, to my endless delight.
MOST WORDS, MOST COMMENTS the man of my home the father of my (cat) children - marcheron - 16,548 words - hockey rpf. this fic does have 30 chapters, to be fair, bc even though it slipped it was meant to be 1 chapter a day for a month kind of a set up. i should also re-read it because...kittens! and falling in love while looking after kittens! oh the simpler days of 2018.
(2ND) MOST WORDS the ghosts of you and me - carraville - 13,605 words - football rpf. this fic has more of me than anything else i've written and i like it more than anything else i've written. it's my if you'll read one thing by me, let it be this piece, if we are being honest.
LEAST WORDS flowers - 00q - 533 words - james bond. short and sweet!
tagging @chawarin-panich @aniron48 @thankyouforbeingsowrong @thebluejayawe @esvalotador @witchmd13 and anyone else who wants to do it!

love i think theres a typo in the post about geno being back in the us. Lots of 5's. (that or my phone is glitching)
Thanks, @thebluejayawe!
I think it's fixed now. (I think. Let me know if there's still a problem.)
That was not a typo, btw. It's what's commonly known as Cat on Keyboard syndrome.

Blue Bloods Fic - Just Peachy
Written for the Winter Whumperland Fic Exchange. My recipient is @thebluejayawe
Thank you for the awesome prompts you offered, I hope you’ll enjoy the results. Also want to thank @the-wandering-whumper for a beta on such short notice. All mistakes left are of course mine:D
You can read the fic here, or over at ff.net or AO3.
For such a large and bulky man, their perp was surprisingly fast. Both Jamie and Eddie realized that when they saw him turn into a side street and then up into a dark alley. He had a pretty decent headstart and their chance of catching up with him once he reached the other side of that alley leading towards warehouses was rather small.
“I'll go on foot, you try and cut him off in the car," Jamie said, already out of the car, and Eddie gritted her teeth.
"Be careful," she shouted after him, but Jamie was already out of earshot. Cursing, Eddie stepped on the gas and took a sharp left turn on the street above. She hated it when they separated during pursuit, yet her partner didn't seem to share the same concern.
Jamie entered the alley at full speed but he quickly slowed down.  He looked around, but he couldn't see any movement. Which meant the perp had either vanished into thin air, or was hiding somewhere between the numerous trash cans. With a grimace, gun held at the ready, Jamie called out.
"NYPD! Step out with your hands in the air!"
There was no movement, not even a rustle. Well, it was worth a try. Jamie continued walking, wary of the corners and trash cans that could be used as a hiding place. What he didn't count on was that suddenly the cover of one of the smaller bins would come flying right at him. Years of instinct honed by living in a house with three older rowdy siblings taught him to duck anything and he managed to get out of the way of the flying cover, but it cost him dearly. His foot slipped on some trash and he staggered, losing balance. Next thing he knew, there was a pair of meaty hands fisted in his jacket, the gun lost on the dirty ground and he was being raised into the air. With an angry growl, the perp, who looked like a giant from this close, slammed him against the wall. Jamie felt his back hit the bricks, his head slamming against the unforgiving wall so hard his teeth rattled and he saw small stars as breath rushed out of him.
"That stuff is mine! It is mine!"  The perp screamed into his face, spittle flying from his mouth and Jamie could see the pinprick pupils. Suddenly he was regretting his decision to split up with Eddie.
"The phone is MINE!"
"Y-yeah, okay," he said, trying to placate the man, even as he was once again slammed against the wall.
"Hey, I said... it's okay," he grunted and tried to raise his hand in a sign of 'I give up', but the guy didn't seem to catch that. He was sputtering about people in the shadows trying to steal his stuff and that he had enough, all the while pinning Jamie against the wall maybe a foot above the ground.
It wasn't a good position to be in and Jamie wracked his brain trying to figure out how to get out of it, but his moves were rather limited, not to mention the perp seemed to be hopped on something that gave him enough strength to kill a horse. Jamie didn't want to test that theory, so he just kept talking, trying to sound as unthreatening as possible. It was maybe a minute later when he noted movement behind the perp.
"Police! Let him go or I'll shoot!" Eddie shouted, but the guy didn't seem to hear her. He kept muttering, his hands wrapping tighter in Jamie's jacket and Jamie knew he was gonna be slammed against the damn wall once again. His body tensed in preparation for the crash, but then the perp froze, his eyes going wide as his body started shaking and in the next second he crumpled to the ground, bringing Jamie with him. With an oomph, Jamie landed right on top of the man, then rolled away as the perp’s fingers went slack and he finally released the grip on Jamie’s jacket.
"Reagan! You okay?" Eddie asked, even as she was rolling the perp over and cuffing him quickly. Which was a good thing to do, because the shock from the taser was wearing off fast and the guy started thrashing around. Jamie wasn’t a fan of using the taser they received as new gear a few weeks ago, but this time it seemed to serve its purpose well.
"Yeah, just peachy," he grumbled, taking a second to catch his breath, then with a groan got to his feet and went to help his partner.
Eddie gave him a quick look, but Jamie waved it off.  It took both of them to get the struggling man into the nearby parked car and lock the door. Once inside, he seemed to fall into some trance and became pliant like a baby. Jamie huffed.
"Of course," he grumbled and leaned against the car to take a moment to pull himself together, while Eddie was calling in the arrest. Jamie ran a hand over the back of his neck. His whole back felt like one big bruise and he could feel a small lump at the base of his skull, but there were no cuts and no blood. He didn't even have a headache... well, not worse than after a heated discussion at the diner table.
"Sure you okay, Jamie?" Eddie asked and Jamie straightened, giving her a reassuring smile.
"I'm fine. He just slammed me against the wall and held me there like a rag doll... no biggie."
Eddie rolled her eyes.
"You're such a lightweight, I bet he didn't even use both hands," she teased him and gave a pat on his shoulder. Jamie managed to look offended instead of wincing when the move seemed to send a shockwave straight up to his brain.
"Yeah well, next time you're running after them and I'll sit in the comfy car, how's that?"
Eddie raised an eyebrow, leaning against the car door.
"Are you insinuating that I weigh more than you?"  She asked and Jamie knew he was on dangerous ground. He ducked his head and climbed in behind the wheel.
"I would never dare," he said and closed the door, hiding his smirk.  Eddie pursed her lips, a warning glint in her eyes as she walked around the car and sat down in the passenger seat.
“You better watch it, Reagan,” she said and Jamie started the car.
oOo
Two hours later, they were out of the precinct and back on the road, four hours of shift still ahead of them. When they brought the perp in, calm as a cucumber, there was paperwork to be done so he could be processed. Jamie still managed to get a five minute shower and change of clothes, though he wished he could just have stayed under the hot spray. It helped his back, which was already starting to bruise up, if the glance in the mirror was anything to go by.  Having to sit in a car behind the wheel, however, made his muscles stiffen up and after twenty minutes Jamie was trying hard not to squirm in his seat, biting his lip to hide the grimaces.
"Damn, Reagan, do you have ants in your pants or what?"
Apparently, he wasn't hiding his discomfort all that well, or maybe it was just one of the hazards of having an observant partner.
"S'okay, just my back getting a bit stiff," he admitted and Eddie narrowed her eyes.
"Maybe we should get you checked out after all. The guy seemed to pack a mean punch."
"First, he didn't hit me, and second, we shouldn't get anyone checked out. I'm fine, just... need to stretch my legs. And maybe get some coffee," he added when he felt a twinge in his neck run straight into his brain. Eddie eyed him from the passenger seat then nodded.
"Okay, why don't we stop at Denny's to grab something to drink and eat? I'm quite starved. It doesn't look like it, but doing paperwork takes a lot of energy."
"Right, paperwork," Jamie grinned, but was relieved that Eddie seemed to drop the issue. He was also really looking forward to that coffee.
They were on a busy four-lane road and Jamie was just planning to cross into the next lane, when the car before him seemed to grow a double, blocking his way. Jamie blinked, but the image didn't vanish, though the lane seemed to waver and blur.
"Shit," Jamie breathed out, instinctively slowing the car but not daring to stop, because there were cars behind them as well.
"What's wrong?" Eddie asked and he could hear the concern in her voice. “Jamie? What's wrong?"
Jamie felt the blood rush from his head and bit down on his lip, the momentary pain clearing his head just a bit. Sweat broke out on his forehead as he was trying to keep the car straight on the road, but they must’ve been veering off into the next lane, because Eddie grabbed the wheel and steered them back.
"What the hell?"
"I can't.... something's wrong. Everything's blurry," Jamie said, panicked. "You need to take over."
"No shit," Eddie snapped. "We're in the middle of a four lane, Jamie. We can't just stop the car."
Jamie seemed to realize that. He shook his head and rubbed one hand across his eyes. Still a bit blurry, but at least there were no twin cars in front of him.
"Okay... I think... I think it's better. Just... need to pull over."
"Yeah... go slow. The right lane is free now and there's a shoulder coming up in a minute..."
Eddie kept her hand close to the wheel and ready to act if Jamie suddenly lost control, but they were lucky and made it to the shoulder without as much as a blaring horn. Being in the police car might've helped that. The moment he threw the car in park, Jamie leaned his head back on the seat and closed his eyes, taking in deep breaths.
"Okay, that was scary as hell," Eddie said, trying to calm her breathing as well, while trying to figure out what was wrong with her partner.
"Jamie? Talk to me. What's wrong?" She reached out, touching his neck, feeling his pulse. He didn't have a fever, but he was clammy to the touch and his heart seemed to be racing, just like hers. "Come on, partner. You're starting to scare me."
"I think I might've hit my head before," Jamie muttered with a grimace and opened his eyes, only to see Eddie watching him with concern mixed with anger.
"Oh, and you thought it was a good idea not tell me and sit behind the wheel? Are you trying to kill us?!"
Jamie winced at her raised voice, but acknowledged she was right.
"Sorry. Didn't... I didn't think anything was wrong," he said and looked so pitiful the anger left Eddie's eyes and there was only worry.
"You didn't lose consciousness? In the alley?"
"No, he just... slammed me against the wall... a few times. That's all."
Eddie growled, muttering something under her breath, but Jamie didn't have the energy to try and figure it out. The headache seemed to come back with vengeance and even Eddie seemed to gain a twin once or twice. Jamie actually had to close his eyes to stave off the nausea.
"So your vision's wonky? Anything else?"
"Mhm, headache, dizzy," Jamie muttered and felt one of Eddie's hands on his face, the other touching the back of his skull, looking for lumps and quickly finding one.
"You're an idiot, you know that?" Eddie said with a sigh even as Jamie winced.
"Can you look at me?  ...Please?" she added when he didn't seem listen. With a sigh, Jamie opened his eyes, squinting when the sunlight hit him just wrong. Eddie peered into his eyes until he started blinking.
"I'm pretty sure you managed to get a concussion," she said and let him go. Jamie rubbed at his eyes and cursed again.
"The Serg will kill me," he moaned, mostly because the man asked him outright if he needed to see a doctor or not and Jamie lied to his face.
"Nah, I think your dad or Danny will manage that first," Eddie tried to cheer him up and obviously failed. Jamie haven't even thought about his family getting wind of this.
"Okay, time to get you to the doctor. Scoot over, your driving privileges are revoked till further notice." Eddie stepped out of the car, letting Jamie scoot into the passenger seat while she went around the car.
"Are you gonna hurl?" Eddie asked once they were back on the road and heading to the hospital. Jamie wanted to glare at her, but he did feel a bit peaky, so he decided keeping his mouth shut was for the best.
"That bad, huh?" Eddie sighed and focused on driving. She cast worried looks at her partner, who had his eyes closed and looked decidedly greenish. Her foot itched to step on the gas.  On the other hand she knew if she drove the way she wanted, they would definitely have to clean up the car afterwards. Thinking they would get enough flack as it was for this little stunt, she kept going within the limit, even slowing down at turns.
They finally reached the hospital and Jamie opened his eyes, at first relieved that the car stopped, but then groaning.
"Come on, there was no other place?" he asked pitifully when he saw they were at Linda's hospital. Eddie just rolled her eyes.
"Don't be a child. You think this won't get back to your father? We might as well use some preferential service," she said and stepped out of the car. Jamie wasn’t in any haste to move though, so she opened his door and pulled at his arm.
"Come on, partner. Don't be a chicken."
"I hate you," Jamie grumbled, though there was no real feeling behind it.
"Yeah, yeah. You'll be singing my praises once you get off your feet."
Jamie still didn't want to get out.
"Come on. You owe me for that stunt on the road," Eddie said, her voice losing all the amusement.  Jamie had the grace to look ashamed.
"Sorry," he mumbled and pushed himself to his feet, grateful for Eddie's supporting hand.
"Yeah, you can tell me how sorry you are when we explain this to Serg. You owe me big," she said, even as she put his arm around her shoulder and they headed into the emergency room.
Jamie wasn't sure what gave him more preferential treatment, the fact he was a cop in a uniform wavering in from the street, the fact he was the commissioner's son, or that the grapevine worked so fast, Linda knew almost immediately he was there. When she saw him, there was a look of panic in her eyes, which quickly turned into relief and confusion. There was no blood visible, no bruises.
“Hey Jamie,” Linda said softly as she reached him, her eyes giving him a quick once over. “You know you don’t have to get busted up if you want to chat with me, right?” she joked, touching his face and looking into his eyes.
“Yeah well… Eddie here thought you might have a slow day…. Said we should visit you,” Jamie tried to joke, squinting as the hospital lightning made his headache worse.
“Ah well, if Eddie thought that… maybe we should have a talk. Come on, buster.” Linda helped him stand up from the uncomfortable waiting room chair. Jamie wobbled a bit as the change in position made his dizziness return, but Eddie was right beside him, once again offering her shoulder as support. With Linda on his other side, he was led into a small exam room.
"Don't even think about falling asleep before the doctor comes in," Linda warned him, when Jamie sat down on the bed and eyed the pillow wistfully.
"What happened?" she asked and Jamie opened his mouth to answer, but Eddie, who was standing by the door with her arms crossed, spoke first.
"He got slammed into a wall by a giant... several times. Then he decided it was a great idea not to tell anyone he was hurt and get behind the wheel. We almost crashed."
Well, there was not much else Jamie could add to that. He noted Eddie still seemed a bit pissed at the last part and grimaced, realizing she wouldn’t forget this anytime soon.
"Jamie!" Linda glared at him and Jamie winced, raising his arms in supplication. Having two angry women in the room when his head was already trying to kill him wasn't all that ideal.
"Okay, I messed up. Can you all just... stop shouting?"
Linda let out a huff, but didn't comment. Instead she helped Jamie take off his uniform. She walked to the other side of the bed to assess the damage to his back.
She gently touched one of the bruises and Jamie hissed.
"Really... you didn't think you were hurt?" Jamie could hear the reproach in her voice and cringed a bit. It was usually just Danny who got that tone when he said something stupid.
Eddie stepped closer and caught a glance at his back as well.
"Come on, Reagan!" She exclaimed, indignant, and Jamie decided that if he lost consciousness just then, he wouldn't mind at all. But he wasn't that lucky, so he just shot a pleading look towards Linda.
“You’re on your own here, buddy,” she smiled, long years of being Danny’s wife obviously making her immune to it. Linda just tsked and kept checking the bruises on his back and the lump on his head.
"You're unbelievable," Eddie muttered. "Am I going to have to strip you down after every chase to check if you're okay?"
Linda paused, then coughed, trying to hide her chuckle. Jamie blinked and looked at Eddie, as if trying to figure out if she really said that.
"Well, if you're offering, I won't mind," he said finally, his lips twitching in a smile. Eddie blushed, muttered something about having to call the precinct and left the room. Linda snorted.
"Smooth, Jamie. Smooth."
Jamie sighed and his shoulders slumped down. Eddie was gone and he could stop trying to pretend he wasn't hurting like hell.
"Okay, why don't you lie down and get some rest?" Linda offered, seeing that he was a moment away from slumping over on his side, whether he got permission or not. Jamie nodded gratefully and with Linda's help, maneuvered himself into a position that didn't hurt his back.
"I'm going to see when Dr. Richards can see you, then I'll call Frank, okay?"
"Can't we just... keep him out of this?" Jamie asked a bit pleadingly, even though he already knew the answer to that.
"If not me, your Sergeant will call. I'll make sure he knows there's no reason to worry, I promise."
"Oh, okay. Thanks, Linda," Jamie mumbled, his face half hidden in the pillow and eyes already closed. Eddie was right... lying down was the best thing to happen to him in the last few hours and he would have to buy her all the coffee her heart desired... once he woke up from his nap.
The End

OH. Please allow me to introduce you to the best thing Thatcher has ever done
Mic’d up at Dunkin Donuts
He gets so nervous working the drivethrough that he says “Welcome to donut” twice and then there’s a shot of him just practicing the phrase “Welcome to Dunkin Donuts welcome to Dunkin Donuts” to himself over and over, it’s THE BEST THING

He is not gravely injured. There is a reason Brad hasn’t given him a call. Or, Patrice was the person Brad wanted by his bedside any time he was injured or sick. The problem? Now Patrice is retired and things are not quite the same between them.

"Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up.”

*takes several deep breaths* im happy mitch is back with his team, and so happy b*bs is gone. they all deserve so much better, and no wonder the top players had notably bad relationships with this guy, considering what hes done? and the worse is that we dont even know the worst. theres no way that this is a singular event. we probably wont ever know all the things he did and thats what seriously scares me, esp bc hes been on other teams?? what other coaches are doing this too?
yup, yup, yup to everything you’ve said. and i really wish we could get a solid statement on this, just so i’m not condemning anyone when i shouldn’t.
but there’s always going to be issues that come with having authority and individuals holding power over certain groups, no matter what. it’s not a surprise, which is terrible, but that’s just how it is. hockey is niche, i’d say, but the problems that occur within management isn’t anything new to human society. you can try to get rid of that by, let’s say, barring those types of people from coaching. but how will you be able to do that? it’s not possible. and i don’t know how you’re ever going to be able to create an 100% safe space for people to play hockey in. i don’t think it’s feasible.
but i guess a solution could be providing resources in order for players to regroup and focus on their own health. mental health resources, etc. that’s an important issue they’re fighting for now, but i don’t think many of the players truly realise how compromised their own mental health is. because goddammit, it’s a human issue and human issues are hard to “fix”.

Merry Christmas @thebluejayawe! Here is your gift for the winter whumperland/ @whumpexchange. It has been a while since I've seen Young Justice so this has been fun. Hopefully this has fixed the formatting but posting via mobile is apparently a nightmare.
Prompt: bc of previous injury, character A passes out and falls into water, team has to rescue
It was all because he was looking out for Robin it happened in the first place.
Dick knew better. This was not his first rodeo after all and Batman had trained him better than that. But this was Jason’s first mission with the team and he was a bit distracted. A rookie mistake of course but he had promised Batman that Jason would be ok and he at least nailed that.
It was supposed to be a simple mission, not that the team ever knew how to handle them without at least something small blowing up. They were supposed to get in, grab the intel, and make it back out without anyone seeing them. Hence why it was him, Robin, Batgirl and M’Gann to maximise the stealth of the team.
They got in without a problem and it didn’t take long for him and Robin to decrypt the security and transfer all the information they needed. It was sheer dumb luck that one of the guards happened to look up at the wrong time while they were heading back out and had to be silenced. M’Gann and Batgirl had already made it out and Robin was just ahead with the guard directly underneath him. Nightwing saw the guard’s eyes widen and had two seconds to jump down and take him out before an alarm could be raised or the gun he was holding be pointed at Robin.
Taking out that one guard wasn’t that hard. It was the one behind him that was trouble. It was a brief fight, over before Robin had a chance to jump down himself, but it was long enough for the second guard to pull a knife and sloppily slice it through his side. It was only a well-timed aerial that saved him for getting properly stabbed instead of the light scratch he actually received. It was further dumb luck however that the knife happened to find the only weak spot in his new suit and allowed it to actually reach his skin. The guard was out before he could get a good look at who he was stabbing and well before he could strike again.
It didn’t really hurt. He was just mad it happened in the first place. And there was no way in hell Batman was hearing about this. No way, not after all the fuss he just made about ‘being his own hero’ and ‘too old for a mentor anymore.’
“Whoa Nightwing, How’d’ya do that so fast?” Robin half whispered excitedly as he landed with his own little flip.
Nightwing grunted as he stood up from examining the now unconscious guard. “Practice,” he replied stiffly, not annoyed at Jason but very annoyed at himself.
Jason looked like he was about to add way more so Dick cut him off.
“We need to get out of here before more guards come and notice these two. Once they do our cover is well and truly blown,” he said, before adding via the psychic link. ‘Is the ship ready M’Gann? We might have some trouble.’
Nightwing was able to jump back up to the rafter while Robin needed to grapple his way up.
‘Yes. She’s all good to go,’ M’Gann replied.
‘What’s taking you two so long?’ Batgirl added.
Nightwing was ready to ignore them but Jason didn’t give him the chance.
‘There were these guards, and Nightwing took them out before I could even get down. It was so cool,’ Jason replied in a rush as he reached the window that would take them outside. Nightwing could see the outline of the ship just by the window sill, only faintly visible because he knew what to look for.
Nightwing sighed to himself before adding. ‘Somehow we found the one guard who knows how to look up. Don’t worry, they won’t be a problem.’ Out loud he said quietly to Jason. “Be careful. The ship is just there. Wait for M’Gann to open the door.”
He could feel Batgirl’s judgment as he entered the ship. Jason had already rushed up to the window so he could watch the country side as they made it back to the cave.
“So, what happened to make sure nobody knows we were here?” She asked as he made his way past her to sit down.
“He wasn’t investigating a noise. He just looked up at the wrong time. Not a lot I could do about that. He was about to see Robin though. I don’t think either of them saw me as I took them out,” he replied.
“Uh huh,” Batgirl didn’t look convinced but dropped the matter as she took her own seat.
“Everything ok?” M’Gann asked cheerfully from the control panel, ignoring the vague iciness coming from the back of the ship.
“Yeah,” Dick added, forcing the annoyance out of his voice. “All good.”

Debrief could have gone a lot worse. They almost got away with delivering their mission report to Black Canary before Batman walked in right at the worst moment. Which was typical of his and Dick’s interactions since he’d become Nightwing.
“We got the files without a problem. Only two guards needed to be subdued on the way out but there were no casualties, and no alarms raised,” Dick finished, unaware that his mentor was behind him. Black Canary nodded as she watched the files transfer from the USB to the Cave’s main computer.
“Are you sure no one saw who you were?” Batman asked with no trace of emotion in his voice. Dick stiffened.
“Fairly. It was a dark corridor,” he replied neutrally.
“It was over so quick B! I didn’t even have time to get to the ground he got them so fast,” Jason added from the other side of the room, barely able to keep himself still.
It was only because Dick knew him so well that he could see the faint tug of a smile at Batman’s lips as he turned to face Jason.
“Is that so?” he added. “Well just in case we will need to monitor their security. I would recommend that anyway, just to be sure they haven’t noticed the security breach. But now it is even more important. Nightwing, you and Mal could keep an eye on that.”
“Of course,” Dick responded.
“Robin, it’s getting late and we have our own patrol to do,” Batman added before giving a brief nod to Black Canary and heading towards the Zeta Tube.
This appeared to be everyone’s cue to leave as Jason started too bound towards the door and Batgirl and M’Gann followed at a more sedate pace.
“One last thing, I take it there are no injuries to report?” Black Canary asked as the team headed towards the kitchen, and in Jason’s case after his mentor.
“No, none to report,” Nightwing replied, having forgotten about the knife that had almost become acquainted with his kidneys not three hours ago.
“Ok then, enjoy the rest of your night.”
xxx
It wasn’t until later that night that Dick remembered he’d been stabbed. He was back in his room, and he could finally relax, and his side started itching. It was more annoying than anything else, he was tired and wanted to go to bed and now he had to deal with treating this. It was a small thing, long but not very deep. So he bound it up and gave it no more thought. It was odd though. It had looked like the slightest scratch but in the morning it appeared to be red and slightly inflamed.
Dick just sighed and decided to ignore it after pouring iodine over it. They had another mission today, one with only original members, which meant chances were low that he’d be that distracted again.
Breakfast was a loud affair. Much louder than it had any right to be. But otherwise nothing noteworthy happened. Even prepping for the mission was relatively mundane. Wally and M’Gann did not need much, and Kaldur always prepared the night before a mission if he could.
He was grateful that it was Black Canary giving their mission brief, he wasn’t sure he wanted Batman to notice anything was off about him. Not that anything was of course.
“How long has it been since it was just us? Pity Conner and Artemis are needed for the beta team,” M’Gann cheerfully said as they boarded the Bioship.
“Well it cuts down on the couples by 200%, so I can only hope the focus will drastically improve,” Kaldur said mildly.
Dick smirked at this, throwing an arm around Wally.
“That’s fine Kaldur. There will still be enough bromance to fill the team quota right here,” he replied, barely managing to avoid wincing as the motion pulled at the wound at his side. Dick had not been so grateful for the psychic link to not be active in a long time.
“Yeah, there’s enough love to go ‘round Kaldur,” Wally cheerfully added, not noticing his friends discomfort.
Taking his seat Dick shivered slightly. The Bioship was normally this cold, but he brushed it off. The trip was going to take a few hours, so if it became a problem he could easily ask M’Gann to turn the heat up.
He almost didn’t notice at first, the pain at first was vague and easy to ignore. But by the time they reached their destination it was a lot harder to ignore. It seemed that the cold he’d felt earlier wasn’t from the Bioship after all. Everything was starting to hurt. One minute he was freezing and couldn’t get warm for the life of him, and the next it felt like he was stuck in the middle of a volcano. There was no in between and there was no relief.
He should say something. He knew he should say something and that it was dangerous not to. But he couldn’t. There was no good way to explain this and if he gave in now it would seem like he’d given up Robin too soon. That he’d made a mistake.
Lucky for him his stubbornness was relieved by Wally.
“Dude, you ok? You seem, I dunno, kinda quiet?” Wally asked, with enough tact to keep his voice low.
“I’ll be fine,” Dick replied as another shiver ran through him. Even through the mask Dick could see his friends’ eyebrow rise in disbelief.
“Yeak, ok. Sure. You wanna try again?” Wally replied.
“I mean I feel kinda crappy, but I’ll be fine. Don’t worry. I’ll make it through.”
“Ok. You wanna tell me what’s wrong? Before we start?”
“Dude, I’m good. Let’s just catch up with the others alright.”
Dick didn’t give his friend a chance to respond as he went to leave the ship, but Wally was far faster than him. Not that he should have expected anything less. Wally gave a hiss as he grabbed his friends arm.
“Yeah, wow, you’re really warm. I really don’t think you should go now.”
“Wally. It’s cool, I got this. We’ve got to go,” he replied, shooting his grappling hook down.
He was wrong. He was so, so, wrong. He did not in fact have this. This was probably one of the biggest mistakes of his life, and he’d worked while sick and injured before. This shouldn’t have been any different, he couldn’t understand why this time was different. He had to be missing something.
The mission started out fine. He was able to ignore the pain in his side and what was clearly a growing fever. Now that he didn’t have an over excited kid to look out for anyway. They had worked long enough as a team by this point that everyone knew their part well and the main objective went off without a hitch.
The trouble came while they were making their way back to the Bioship. He and Kaldur were skulking along the dock towards the woods where the ship had been left. As she usually did M’Gann had flown ahead to prep the ship, and after a long moments consideration Wally had run after her.
The pain in his side had grown now, and any clumsy attempts he’d made at warding off infection had clearly failed. He was too close to the dock. He wanted to stumble away but he couldn’t see where the solid land was and where the water was. He wanted nothing more than to be in Bioship, or his room at the Cave, but to achieve that he had to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
He couldn’t focus on anything else. He as getting dizzy and lightheaded, and it was lucky for him that this section of dockland had been all but abandoned because he wasn’t feeling particularly stealthy at that moment.
“..wing. … ok?”
He didn’t see the water coming towards him. He didn’t even realise he was falling in until he was in the water and suddenly couldn’t breathe. It was cold, far colder than he had been before, and it dark. He had to kick up to the surface, but he couldn’t for the life of him figure out where that was. He was still dizzy, he hadn’t started in the best position and he didn’t think he could help himself. One of his last thoughts before fading from consciousness was that his rebreather was in his belt and his he couldn’t find the surface he should at least grab that. His last thought was, what was the dark glowing shape coming up to him.
The next thing he knew he was staring at the sky. The starts were far brighter than they had any right to be, but he was glad he could see them.
“Nightwing, can you hear me?” a deep voice came from beside him. A very familiar voice. “Don’t move. M’Gann is coming with the ship.”
It was Kaldur. That explained the glowing at least. He sat up, hissing at the pain in his side.
“I’m ok,” he clearly wasn’t but he meant it in a more I’m-alive way then everything-is-good way.
“I don’t doubt that my friend,” he did, but saying that was pointless. “But I think it would be best to get you checked out.”
Nightwing just nodded, beyond the point of caring now.
xxx
Wally hadn’t been the only one to notice Nightwing had been struggling. It hadn’t been obvious at the start of the journey over, if it had there was a good chance Black Canary wouldn’t have cleared him to come in the first place. And he and Wally had been their usually almost slightly obnoxious selves for the first half an hour. It was after that that Nightwing had gradually become quitter and quitter until he was barely saying anything. Kaldur didn’t mind the permission banter, he had long ago gotten over the need for silence before starting a mission, but he did appreciate it when it happened. Wally didn’t say anything about it so Kaldur didn’t think anything of it.
That was until they were making their way back to the ship.
There weren’t many circumstances where Nightwing lost his grace, and any opportunity he got he would show off his acrobatics. But tonight it seemed he was off, and there were a lot less acrobatics coming from him. But they achieved their mission and all they had to do was get back to the ship.
It Nightwing had seem a little off earlier, now he seem completely off. He kept wondering over to the side of the docks and back, and even though this area was allegedly abandoned that did not mean they didn’t need to be vigilant.
“Nightwing? Are you ok?” Kaldur asked when they both paused. Rather than in the shade of the buildings they were beside the water, which made Kaldur a little uneasy by the way his friend was stumbling back. Because he was half paying attention to if anything was coming from behind them, he almost missed it when Nightwing fall into the water.
Even as the splash his friend caused rose from the water Kaldur swore and jumped in after him.
The bay was far deeper than it had any right to be, as shipping bays usually are. Swimming towards him Kaldur could see Nightwing struggle, kicking the wrong way towards the surface and then reaching for his belt. Right as Kaldur got to him he stopped struggling and was limp as he dragged him towards the surface.
As they broke the surface of the water there was a heart stopping moment where it seemed like Nightwing wasn’t breathing. But the moment passed and though he was still limp he was gasping for breath, so Kaldur’s worst fears were not realised.
“M’gann,” he called into the comm link. “I’m going to need you to bring the Bioship to the docks. Nightwing is down.”
“Oh my gosh! Is he ok? I’ll bring it right down,” she replied.
Satisfied with this Kaldur pulled Nightwing onto the dock’s surface. It did not take long for him to regain consciousness, though with the mask the only indication of this that Kaldur got was the soft groan he gave.
“Nightwing? Can you hear me?” he asked, crouching down next to him.
xxx
The wound on his side was a deep streaky red and very clearly infected.
As he had lifted the side of his suit up Wally gave a long whistle. “Wow, where did you get that? And don’t say you didn’t notice because wow,” he said.
“Last mission, I didn’t want the guard to engage Robin and I didn’t see the second one. It was pretty much fine this morning, looked like a scratch,” Nightwing replied as M’Gann came over with the first aid kit.
“So why didn’t you say something yesterday?” Kaldur asked. Nightwing shrugged in response.
“Honestly I had forgotten that it’d happened,” he replied, before groaning. “And this means Robin won’t take me seriously when I tell him to report everything. Batman is going to kill me.”
Wally whistled again.
“Yeah, the new Robin seems, enthusiastic to say the least,” he added unhelpfully.
Nightwing winced as M’Gann dabbed antiseptic over the wound and bound it up. Once that was done he rolled his suit down again. M’Gann was looking at the team thoughtfully, he could almost see the gears turning in her head.
“Well, I don’t think we can hide this from Batman, sorry Nightwing but you clearly need treatment. But I do think we can keep this from the rest of the team. Besides Conner and Artemis, they don’t really need to know,” she said after a moment of silence.
Wally nodded. “Yeah, we got you bro.”
Kaldur nodded. “It would be best to not broadcast this I agree.”
Nightwing smiled. He still felt awful, and he was certainly going to hear about this from Batman. But at least his team had his back.
“Alright,” M’Gann said cheerfully, now that the danger seemed to have passed. “Let’s get you back to the Cave.”
Wally nodded. “Yeah, we got you bro.”
Kaldur nodded. “It would be best to not broadcast this I agree.”
Nightwing smiled. He still felt awful, and he was certainly going to hear about this from Batman. But at least his team had his back.
