It was sort of a lie – she didn't have to work late that evening, due to a huge project. She merely didn't want to get dragged to a reunion-type party that Liz invited her to. By pure chance, Liz bumped into her at a cafe a couple of days ago and invited Briggs to come to Betty's party at her uptown townhouse. People from their graduating class had been invited and Betty thought 5 years was enough time to see how everyone was doing.

Originally the young woman was to deal with her normal workload at Kingsman on 5th Avenue, but then her colleague in Seoul video called her, asking for assistance. Apparently their shop had been asked to expedite a custom piece for a questionable individual and saying no was impossible. So her colleague had overnighted the suit and Briggs was upstairs in a fitting room, trying to hand finish some of the last remaining details on their client's bespoke suit.

It was starting to get late and she covered her mouth as she felt a yawn come on. One of the shop clerks up front noticed this and suggested that the young woman call it quits for the evening.

"I believe you could finish it up tomorrow morning," the clerk reassured her. "I'll let Merlin and Kumiho know. They'll understand as it's late here."

"When did the client need this?" Briggs asked.

"Friday afternoon in Seoul," the clerk explained.

The young woman nodded and stifled another yawn as she emerged from the fitting room and stretched her arms out. She excused herself to grab her bag and coat and headed back up to the front to leave for the night.

As she was about to slip through the front door, she blinked the sleepiness out of her eyes and squinted as she spotted someone who looked familiar.

Her prototype translator device is gripped in one hand, her e-mail print out of where she is staying while in Japan in the other. Everything was moving so quickly and it was a bit dizzying – a few weeks ago, her teacher submitted her device for consideration to be reviewed by representatives in technology with her classmates. A company in Japan reached out, eager to develop it for traveler market who didn't have time to sit in a language class. The catch was she had to bring her prototype with her, live and work in Japan for a brief period, and oversee the production for the final product.

She tore her gaze from the e-mail and tried to acquaint herself. She was close to the apartment the company rented for her, but she was trying to determine if this was the street she needed to hang a left on or if it was the next one.

"Hang on, he did what?"

"I'm afraid Galahad, the new one, went through all of our umbrellas," Merlin sighed. "I'm trying to produce more with the machine here at HQ, but obviously that will take some time. Can you program the machine over in New York to work on replacements as well?"

Briggs swiveled in her seat and glanced in the direction of the Development room where some of the gadgets were built and assembled once the prototypes were approved.

"I can do it – no problem," she sighed. "But I've got someone new coming in too and we're short staffed here in terms of onboarding."

Merlin groaned as he removed his glasses and placed them on the desk in front of him. He rubbed his temples and sighed.

"Very well Nivian, you program the machine on your end and I'll have one of the agents on my side stop by to pick them up," he replied. "The machine can run without you standing over it every minute, so you can assist with any training or whatnot."

Briggs agreed and she leaned forward in her seat when she saw a text come through from the shop front saying someone was asking for her.

“No I’m not lost,” Briggs sighed, trying to keep her patience. She heard Jonah was back in Seoul after a brief loan to New York City’s Institute and decided it was time to cash in her vacation days. She had no issues portaling to Seoul without being detected by Mundies, but now her path was blocked by one who thought she was lost AKA that he could convince her to go for a drink.

“I’m surprising my boyfriend,” she added. “Yes he exists, this isn’t a joke.”

“It won’t take a moment,” her co-worker insisted as he slipped out the door while her fork was poised over a large piece of chicken. Briggs barely lifted her head as he disappeared into the city to run some “quick errand”, shaking her head. 

She was used to this – the fae tended to sneak off, leaving her to turn her lunch into a work period. Fine, she’ll make do. 

At the sound of the bell on the door, she looked up and put her fork down. Her free hand reached for her napkin, wiped her mouth and she addressed the individual who entered.

“Good afternoon, are you picking up or dropping off?”

“I believe the new nurse is here,” one of the clerks announced when he stopped by her office. 

Briggs tore her gaze from the screen, hands resting on the edge of the desk. The scan she was running on a bullet would take a while, so she pushed herself to a standing position and exited her office. 

She followed the clerk upstairs and smoothed out a wrinkle in her pants. The clerk pushed the curtain back and Briggs exited from the back of the shop to see the young woman standing before the cutting table.

“This is Bridgette Ainsley,” the clerk introduced her. 

“Just Briggs,” she corrected him as she extended a hand to the young woman.

“You’re making a rare visit,” she remarked when she saw who it was step through the door of the technology repair shop. 

She put her pliers and straightened up, giving the newcomer her full attention. 

“To what do I owe the pleasure of seeing your lovely face on this side of town?”

“Yeah I know I said I’d buy you coffee – the sandwich isn’t that much more,” Briggs replied with a shrug of her shoulders. She pulled out her card and ordered the coffee for the young man. 

“Room for cream and sugar?” the clerk asked as they lingered at the carafe. 

“No he takes it black,” she explained before glancing back at Jongin. She pointed to the sandwich he was looking at and explained he wanted one of those as well. 

“Anything else?”

She shook her head as she passed the card over and waited for the receipt and pen to be passed over. She scrawled a signature and took her copy before sliding the full cup of black coffee toward her. 

“My Forensics teacher called caffeine the “cradle to the grave drug” for a reason, but I think I’d take death by caffeine any day of the week.”
