Addy’s Summer Dress is cute and accurate, so not especially noteworthy. It was one I didn’t have as a kid, but now I really want as an adult.

One of the things I really appreciate about Addy’s story is how it showed how families struggled to reunite after Emancipation. In Addy Saves the Day, Addy writes a letter to the Quaker Aid Society, but many people with misplaced family members placed ads in newspapers asking for information. They’re some of the most heart-breaking things you’ll ever read.

Many families were never reunited.

ADDY CRIME ERA BEGINS

Howdy, just wanted to say I just saw the Bonely Hearts Club Winter Event and stars above the backgrounds (and the art as a whole) were fantastic. You did a right well good job on the backyard as gosh does it look great. Also, if you don't mind me inquiring, is there art of Monster Addy's gyftmas attire showing off the full design?

Yeah sure, here's everything I did

I dressed like some type of Krampus because after designing my sona I realized I made my sona look like him. Backgrounds:

Gaze in wonder upon the buff sexy snow Papyri. Also you should pay attention to that side table in the living room because every time I have to make a new version of it for the game I put a new Cursed Snack on it. The winder event is pretty tame. I don't recall which version of the background has it but one has a chocolate dipped onion with a bite out of it.

theyre both papas girls (vox is papa al is daddy)!! addys older, and al named addy while vox named vienna. viennas the little princess of the family lol

husk likes vienna better bc she reminds him of vox (specifically newly fallen sinner vox) so he dotes on her like he used to dote on him. she calls him uncle husk and he calls her little voicebox (vox thinks its adorable, alastor HATES it but he doesnt kill husk for the sake of vox and their daughters. plus husk did help raise them nd keep vox sane while he was gone, so. theres that)

rosie and addy are super close. addys the reason why rosie and vel are so close, she goes to both of them whenever she needs advice or wants to vent about something to her favourite aunties (vox and al ask rosie to babysit addy and vienna most of the time. vienna is a little awkward around her but otherwise shes fine)

al and vox wouldve been married for a long time here. probably like 60s-70s time? (his hair looks better here because thats what being in love does to u babeyyy hells hairstylists got nothing on alastors pinkie pie hair ass bitch) and addy and vienna are actually a bit older than they look (addy looks to be 10, vienna 8 but addys actually 15 and viennas 13). al didnt choose to leave for 7 years, and he meant to tell them beforehand but didnt have time so vox spent 7 years raising both his girls with the help of the other vees / husk / rosie, which is why addy and vienna like their papa better

I read several articles about the history of Black dolls when I was preparing my AG spam, and one of the consistent things that kept coming up was what a game-changer Addy was. There were only a few Black Barbies at Toys-R-Us, and Black baby dolls were pretty rare. Addy was finally a popular, easily-available, and high-quality doll that Black girls could have who looked like them.

And White girls bought her, too! I had an Addy! I a lot of ways, Addy was my first real intro to Black history.

Addy has earned a lot of flak for being “the slave doll,” but honestly, anyone who reads her books knows that she is so much more than that. She starts her story enslaved and makes a harrowing journey to freedom, and then learns how to live free. She goes to school, learns to read, and then teaches her mother how to read. She celebrates the end of the war and is able to reunite her family.  She offers a counter-narrative to the 12 Years a Slave-style hopeless trauma porn that often comes with slavery stories, how brave Black people brought themselves to freedom and built a community for themselves. Addy helped this little White girl learn that Black lives matter and that Black history is important.

Living in Florida and seeing Ron DeSantis do everything he fucking can to censor Black history (if you don’t know about it, please take this moment to learn about the Rosewood Massacre), I’m really, really, really glad I had Addy and her books to be my entry way to Black history. It may have started with slavery, but it sure as hell didn’t end with slavery.

As far as her fashion goes, it’s all pretty accurate! I love that finally an American Girl has her hair up!

In the book, Addy receives her dress from a woman running a safe house during her escape from slavery. Even thought it’s relatively plain, it’s much, much, much nicer than anything Addy has worn before, and it really hits home how much better her life is going to be now that she’s free.

Fun lil fact: in the 90s the gourd was made from an actual gourd (I had the actual gourd!), which had a little cork stopper in it, but a crop failure (and Canadian import laws) changed it to plastic.
