a folded, yellowed scrap of paper found shoved deep in the bedside table of major raikov. the ink is blotched from droplets of water splattered upon the page, the edges curled from when they’d grown damp; now long dry, such features serve only to age the parchment more. dirt and grime coat the surface in the shape of fingerprints. a faint smell of copper and earth and gunpowder that still clings to the paper. the handwriting flows beautifully across the page, elegant penmanship a stark and almost unnerving contrast against the deteriorating backdrop. translated from russian, it reads;

Mama, I truly don’t think I am cut out to be a soldier. Though [the text is destroyed by water damage] seem to have taken to it well, as expected of them, I can’t find myself enjoying it. Holding a gun is too far a departure from holding onto the still rings. I think balancing my entire body weight on those is nothing compared to the weight of these guns we’re forced to lug around all day. Is it selfish to say I wish I had been exempt from conscription? I was so close to something great. Do you remember what my instructors said? About the Bolshoi, and the Olympics? If I had just been a little better, maybe I would be there already. I wouldn’t be stuck with all these brutish young men carrying double our body weight in supplies through the snow and rain. And they’re terrible to me. Didn’t you tell my dear brothers to protect me? I scarcely see them, and when I do, they’re joining in. Mocking me. It’s barely been a month and everyone is already been stealing my things, pulling my hair, shoving me into the dirt. More things I’d rather not speak of. You always told me I was beautiful, Mama, but I feel that’s an awful detriment to my safety here. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t talk about my comrades that way, let alone my siblings. Forgive me, Mama. There’s pride to be taken in defending our Motherland, and I should be more thankful. It’s just a difficult change. We’re doing alright out here. I hope everything continues to be well at home. Send my regards to Papa, if you get this. I don’t believe my last letter went through.
