Same guy from the last ask and I was wondering: Are we as comic readers to ready to jump to comparing IDW Sonic;s issue count to Archie Sonic in its entirety? Even when comparing just the first 40 issues, nobody reads Archie Sonic one issue at a time, they pirate it and binge, but IDW Sonic comes out once a month. I wonder if the "slow pace, not enough happening" complaints are being filtered through having a huge deluge of Archie material compared to an ongoing comic.
It is extremely that. We're comparing the greatest hits of a comic franchise that ran continuously across multiple books for nearly 25 years to a new series that just turned 3
If you compare them more fairly, the first 40 issues of Archie Sonic were mostly a simple gag comic. The average casual reader probably won't remember much aside from Mecha Madness and maybe the Metal Sonic fight in issue #25. And even with the later comics, which is what most fans really remember, reading month to month it'd often be AGES between appearances of your faves because there were so damn many subplots to juggle. Sometimes you'd get new stories about the Freedom Fighters or Knuckles or Shadow or whoever. Other times you'd be stuck with multiple months in a row of Tommy Turtle stories or a Guardians of the Galaxy parody. How many YEARS did poor Sally spend on the sidelines? For Christ's sake, they spent like two solid years on the Mina love triangle and Green Knuckles. I still cherish Archie Sonic when taken as a whole, of course. At its best it felt like the series gave you a lot to chew on. But it definitely wasn't always firing on all cylinders, and it took years and years to really hit that peak complexity people remember it for
It's also important to remember that IDW Sonic being less dense with subplots and characters than the later Archie books was a very deliberate choice on Ian's part. He didn't want a repeat of the post-reboot Archie series, where they were eager to set up another complex world with tons of moving parts right away, and then the series got tragically canceled before they could explore half of those new ideas. IDW Sonic was never a surefire success, after all. But had the series been canned after the Metal Virus, we still would've gotten satisfying stories in that time, and complete arcs with a beginning, middle, and end for characters like Whisper and Starline. We've definitely gotten more complexity over time (look at stories like Bad Guys or Chao Races & Badnik Bases and compare those to the first issue that's just about Sonic and Tails), but it took time to build up to that
The series is also being written with new readers in mind. (And, you know, kids.) I guarantee there are people out there who had little to no idea who Blaze the Cat was before reading IDW #4, and for them the very deliberate pacing that avoids throwing in everything and the kitchen sink all at once is a massive boon. I love the density of the Archie series, but that also made it infamously difficult to jump into for new readers (even new readers who loved the games)
For the record, I also don’t think these complaints are all that common outside of hardcore fan spaces where people inevitably compare the two series. I see way more love for the IDW series online among general Sonic fans than I ever saw for the Archie comics, and it’s consistently one of IDW’s top sellers

hi! sorry if this is random, but you're constantly churning out pages-long post about soc and the grishaverse and so i figured you'd be the right person to ask; as someone that wants to watch both the tv show and the read the books, which do you think i should do first? (oh, and from what i can tell there are two different grishaverse collections? so the question extends to what with what collection should i start first) thank you 😁 and btw i love your (kind of meaningless to me bc i understand 10% of it) posts about the show/books, keep at it 💙
AHHHH thank you so so much, i'm glad my posts have sparked an interest as SOC really is my book series of all time AND i think the show is pretty good too! my personal suggested reading and watch order is
a) six of crows duology- these books are just fantastic and while they're too good to be ruined or spoiled in a line or so one of the things that makes them so good is the release of information in the heist! the show follows some different adaptative routes that either hint or spoil things in the duology even if the main A plot of SOC hasn't started yet, so i'd really recommend reading these first (these books are six of crows and crooked kingdom)
b) the show! - as an adaptation, i think it's pretty good! for me there was a wierd levelling effect that while i think stuff i LOVED in the soc duology got a little less sharp and interesting in the show, stuff i found quite boring in the grisha trilogy show was massively improved upon in the show especially with the charm of some of the actors. it's good and it's one season! i wouldn't worry about understanding the show without reading the grisha trilogy, because while SOC is in parts massively adapted, the grisha trilogy plotline is copied almost exactly from the book, made more logical, and deeply enriched. (thank you jessie mei li and archie renaux especially!) (this is one season, eight 40 minute episodes, on netflix)
c) IF you like it. THe grisha trilogy. this was the first series Leigh wrote and it's... interesting. it's very much a freshman attempt and while i think there IS some interesting content in here i think the show really expanded on those threads in more fleshed out ways, while this remains a bog standard very very bland 2010's ya series. i slammed through two books on a plane journey it's a fast read but not a great one (these are shadow and bone, siege and storm, and ruin and rising). expect love triangles and purple writing
d) (moving up to C honestly) - supplementary materials- the language of thorns book is not essential! but it is fun. there's on one saints coming out i think?
hope this is helpful! i'm really glad you like the grishaverse content it's one of my favorite fandom things to talk about and if you have any other questions just let me know!

Hey everybody, I wrote a (totally not an assignment for my local newspaper) review of Riverdale.
(most under the cut)
I had almost no knowledge of the Archie comics when I sat down to watch the pilot episode of The CW's new show Riverdale. If anything, all I had was a vague familiarity with the characters and their relationships, and a dim awareness of some kind of love triangle.
That's probably a good thing. Apparently, that was all I needed.
The story of Riverdale takes place in the small town of the same name, which is populated by characters out of the beloved Archie comics. The pilot episode opens on the town at the end of summer. Golden boy Jason Blossom has just drowned in a tragic accident, and other dark secrets have been piling up, ready to be revealed.
The concept is intriguing, reviving a familiar universe with a well-meaning attempt at a Twin Peaks vibe. This update to the Archie story has brought with it a few refreshing details to delight fans of the original comics. There are several nods to the source material, from the old-timey Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe to the clunky computers of the school's newspaper room. Riverdale also brings a new level of diversity: main character Veronica Lodge and her mother are rewritten as Latina women, and the famous girl rock band Josie and the Pussycats become three African American girls with a serious message about equality.
If viewers come to Riverdale with a modern appreciation for diverse representation and serious issues, they must also come with an appetite for scandal and drama. In an attempt to deliver, The CW has been a little too generous. Along with the murder of Jason Blossom, viewers buckle under an avalanche of indulgent melodrama, from a social-media-incited revenge plot to a romantic relationship between Archie and his teacher. It is not surprising that this show comes from the creators of Glee and shares a channel with Gossip Girl. Fans of these shows should expect nothing less of Riverdale and, unfortunately, not much more.
One of Riverdale's initial hooks for me was curiosity. This program marks actor Cole Sprouse's first time on screen since he left his role as half of the famous duo in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody to finish his education. Though he hasn't acted professionally since 2011, he hasn't lost his touch. In fact, he is only one of a cast of impressive new actors, which also includes New Zealand actor K.J. Apa as Archie, whose sincere performance makes his fake red hair somewhat forgivable, and Camila Mendes, who plays her first-ever acting role of Veronica Lodge as just the right combination of caring and willful.
It is unfortunate, then, how these actors are limited by Riverdale's mediocre writing: the kind of cheesy one-liners and over-the-top dramatic pauses that you want to hope are ironically self-aware, but you can't quite bring yourself to pretend that they are. The show attempted to bring Archie and his pals into a refreshing new story, but so far, the characters and the dialogue are so two-dimensional that they belong in the panels of a comic book. Perhaps there, the stiffness and exaggeration would go unnoticed.
Some details are reminiscent of the comics in a good way. The coloring is even beautiful. Playing with bright reds and blues, it perfectly captures the neon-light glow of a 40's diner. Much of the set and wardrobe looks like it could have come right out of the first comics: cotton turtleneck cheerleader uniforms and letterman jackets show up beside both vintage cars and iPhones to evoke the feel of town caught picturesquely in the past. Visually, the show is a masterpiece.
So while not particularly sophisticated or compelling, Riverdale's pleasant visuals, classic cast of characters, and brave new spin (which I hope will be worth the risk) render it passably entertaining. In short, Riverdale could be your new guilty pleasure, but I expect anyone who gives up an hour out of their week to watch it (Thursdays 9/8c on The CW) to feel at least a little guilty.

I feel like the reason why the editors (not just Penders...) were so keen on putting love triangles in the older Archie Sonic comics is because of their company's main brand, the Archie Riverdale characters, despite the fact that the main reason why the love triangle in Riverdale works is because it's been around since the 40's, and it's not based off a different company's series. It's like when they tried to add triangles, they saw as Sonic as hedgehog version of Archie Andrews (short of)...
I think it’s a combination of that, trying to appeal to female readers, and what I think is the biggest reason; a flagrant attempt to cash in on the rising popularity of anime in the States without realizing why it became popular to begin with.  I say it’s the biggest reason because as you’ll see, especially with the next issue, the comic is about to enter what many consider its’ “anime phase”.
I think there’s also the fact that those in charge didn’t really understand the core appeal of Sonic as a character or franchise and frankly just did not care either way. As long as comics were sold and they got a paycheck, that’s all that mattered.

But that just isn’t the lone reason Louisville will charm. M: Missouri turns into an SEC contender right away The Tigers embody the redemptive powers of a faculty basketball software willing to devote. With Cuonzo Martin’s $21 million offer, the Tigers also gained Michael Porter Jr., the No. one recruit in The us, per ESPN.com, and a legit possibility to compete for an SEC crown and return to the NCAA tournament for the initial time considering the fact that 2013.
N: North Carolina tells the NCAA to keep in its lane Louisville challenged the penalties levied by the Committee on Infractions. North Carolina has taken a distinctive solution. W: What is subsequent for Butler? The Bulldogs employed LaVall Jordan, a previous player, soon after Chris Holtmann accepted the Ohio Condition gig. Jordan is a previous head mentor at UW-Milwaukee and a previous Michigan assistant. He arrives from excellent applications and understands the anticipations at Butler. What need to we count on in the Jordan era? Extra success.
X: Xavier deserves additional adore Lost in the discussions about Kentucky, Duke, Louisville, North Carolina and other people this offseason was the abundance of talent returning for Chris Mack. Xavier, an Elite Eight crew final time, features Trevon Bluiett, a probable preseason All-American, J.P. Macura, a sturdy recruiting course and UW-Environmentally friendly Bay transfer Kerem Kanter.
Y: Young Kentucky squad the nation’s greatest enigma Wenyen Gabriel, a sophomore, will be a veteran for Kentucky, which signed the nation’s top recruiting course, per ESPN.com. Sure, Calipari generally coaches youthful gamers. But his very best groups have experienced a few of veterans to stability the youth. That just isn’t the case this 12 months. This is one particular of Cal’s youngest rosters and greatest troubles.
Z: Zach Collins is absent, so what will Gonzaga glimpse like now? The Bulldogs continue to be the crew to beat in the West Coast Convention — nevertheless Saint Mary’s is a top-twenty five crew able of profitable the league — but keeping on to that slot will desire an upgraded time by Johnathan Williams and contributions from a fleet of new faces.
