Ok so I watched the first two episodes of The Effect because it was in my recommended, and spoilers I guess, but at first glance I thought it was going to be the typical pining BL love story, but then I watched episode 2 and it ends with a r*pe scene. Now I know it’s only the second episode, but I think I’m gonna have to wait and see. I think we can all agree that r*pe being used as a gateway to a romance is just a fucking dumbass concept, and I think, just like that TT series, that’s what’s being done here. I honestly don’t know where the story can go from here for this couple, other than just ending up together at the end, which will suck. I might just watch because it looked like there was a secondary couple that I was interested in, but I hope I’m not being baited into staying. Idk, it just started I think, but r*pe being used in any series to start a romance, and in general, is just uncomfortable to witness.

So um yeah I was right The Effect did make me cry

Not in the way that I thought. I was pretty angry

And I was correct about this being a cautionary tale.

I do hope more people watch this and see how they can make other people’s lives a living hell. And how they’re never really held accountable and can go on and live their lives with no repercussions.

People don’t understand the power of words. And some don’t care. And I feel that this is a good example of how people in fandoms can take things too far.

That is my personal opinion and how I chose to apply it to fandoms. More specifically people who tend to ship nonfictional people. Remember that they are humans too, just because they’re attractive and played very relatable and convincing characters does not give you the right to say hurtful things about them or their loved ones because it makes you unhappy.

Back to the show,

First show recently where I didn’t feel like their were unnecessary characters. Everyone played a part and didn’t go overboard.

I wished Man was dealt some punishment. At least Keng had a mental toll taken in him and I’m convinced that ending was for him. At the risk of sounding like a villain lover, I do feel bad for Keng. He had no one, and no example of real love. He felt that no one cared about him genuinely and so when he first heard Shin, he took that idolization and received it romantically. In the end he was very selfish and spoiled and I liked how it was slowly revealed.

I mentioned once how I didn’t like Shin being so shy. That hasn’t changed. He didn’t have a voice, even in his own story. So much could’ve happened if he was allowed to speak. I’m glad he had his friends there to help him though. And I’m glad I didn’t imagine PramoteBright from the beginning. These two were the light in all this darkness.

I do like how the show framed things as sweet and romantic. It made me believe that things would eventually work out. With the help of Boy. But it didn’t.

Wished we got a bit more info on everyone’s ending

Ok so the eggs on my face. Turns out that The Effect was only 3 episodes. I was under the impression it was gonna be like a full on series. But you have no idea the sigh of relief I had when they didn’t end up together like I feared. Like thank god. And that side couple that I was picking up on happened, but we didn’t get to see their story, which tbh right now isn’t that important. But like, how it ended. First off Pramote and Bright are the best friends of any series I’ve seen so far. And this story really fucked me up. Like the first 2 episode really traumatized me, I could not stop thinking about it. And I suppose they meant for it to be like that? Not everyone is lucky enough to have a storybook ending. And something we cherish can just change in an instant. With episode 3, it was really interesting to see how they handled the aftermath of the situation. Again, thankful they didn’t romanticize r*pe, and we got to see how hurt and pissed of Shin was with Keng, not even a chance he’d forgive him. But then later Shin pulls out that knife and I’m like nOOO. But then we get a time jump, Shin is recovered and happy, and I hoped that was it. But then it ends with both Shin and Keng saying that maybe if things played out, they could’ve been happy, and then they su*cide pact by getting hit by cars. WHAT? After all that rooting for Shin to be happy, just for him to fucking die in the end??Man, I’m too used to happy endings I need to realize that tragedy’s do exist. But overall, it’s a very good show. Idk if I’d say I’d recommend it to people, because it’s contents could really trigger some people, but I thought the story was relatively well written. And the thing I’ve learned today is this:
