The Story of Sharifa Everyone called me a boy in my childhood but I eventually understood that even though my body was like that of a boy, I was actually a girl. I loved dressing up like girls. However, no one at home agreed to buy me the clothes I liked. I liked doing household chores with my mother, rather than going out with my father. I used to secretly makeover myself with my sisters’ cosmetics. If I was caught. I would be scolded or even beaten. I wanted to play with girls more. Nevertheless at home. in school. the girls did not want to take me in sports with them. Even when I went to play with the boys they used to laugh at my voice and behaviour. Everyone at school, the neighbours, and even the people at home ignored me a lot. I used to suffer a lot thinking why I was like this. I felt very alone. One day I met someone whom everyone called a girl but she thought of herself as a boy. I thought “this person is also like me.” She told me “We are not women or men. We are the third gender.” That person took me to a place where there were more people like us. And their ‘Guru Mom’ kept a watch on all of them. Going there, I did not feel alone. I did not feel that I was different from others. I began to stay with those people. There the rules and customs were different from those of our home. Still, we lived like a family, sharing all the joys and sorrows among us. We live like a family, sharing everyone’s happiness and sorrow. We also feel bad for the people at home. So we go home from time to time. I left home twenty years ago. Since then I have been earning money with my new family by blessing newborn babies and new brides and grooms. Sometimes I collect money from people by requesting them. However, we want to live like other common people in the society, to study, work and do business like them. Nevertheless, most people don’t want to mix with us, don’t want to give us work even if we have required qualifications. However, nowadays many people are sympathetic to us. Nowadays, many people like us are studying from their own homes. There are people like us in all countries of the world. In many countries. they live like the rest of the society. The condition of our country is also changing. The Bangladesh government recognised us in 2013. The government and many nongovernment organisations are working for us. They are providing education and employment. They are working to change the attitude of society. Many third gender people like Nazrul Islam Ritu, Shammi Rani Chowdhury and Bipul Barman have achieved success in social and professional life.

"Lead is a neurotoxin; it causes premature deaths and lifelong negative effects. It’s said “there is no safe level of lead exposure” — as far as we know, any lead causes damage, and it just gets worse the more exposure there is.

After a 20-year, worldwide campaign, in 2021 Algeria became the final country to end leaded gasoline in cars — something the US phased out in 1996. That should make a huge difference to environmental lead levels. But lots of sources remain, from car batteries to ceramics...

Bangladesh phased out leaded gasoline in the 1990s. But high blood lead levels have remained. Why? When researchers Stephen Luby and Jenny Forsyth, doing work in rural Bangladesh, tried to isolate the source, it turned out to be a surprising one: lead-adulterated turmeric.

Turmeric, a spice in common use for cooking in South Asia and beyond, is yellow, and adding a pigment made of lead chromate makes for bright, vibrant colors — and better sales. Buyers of the adulterated turmeric were slowly being poisoned...

But there’s also good news: A recent paper studying lead in turmeric in Bangladesh found that researchers and the Bangladeshi government appear to have driven lead out of the turmeric business in Bangladesh.

How Bangladesh got serious about lead poisoning

The researchers who’d isolated turmeric as the primary cause of high blood lead levels —working for the nonprofit International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh — went to meet with government officials. They collected samples nationwide and published a 2019 follow-up paper on the extent of the problem. Bangladesh’s Food Safety Authority got involved.

They settled on a two-part approach, starting with an education campaign to warn people about the dangers of lead. Once people had been warned that lead adulteration was illegal, they followed up with raids to analyze turmeric and fine sellers who were selling adulterated products.

They posted tens of thousands of fliers informing people about the risks of lead. They got coverage in the news. And then they swept through the markets with X-ray fluorescence analyzers, which detect lead. They seized contaminated products and fined sellers.

According to the study released earlier this month, this worked spectacularly well. “The proportion of market turmeric samples containing detectable lead decreased from 47 percent pre-intervention in 2019 to 0 percent in 2021,” the study found. And the vanishing of lead from turmeric had an immediate and dramatic effect on blood lead levels in the affected populations, too: “Blood lead levels dropped a median of 30 percent.”

The researchers who helped make that result happen are gearing up for similar campaigns in other areas where spices are adulterated.

The power of problem-solving

...When the Food Safety Authority showed up at the market and started issuing fines for lead adulteration, it stopped being a savvy business move to add lead. Purchasers who were accustomed to unnatural lead-colored turmeric learned how to recognize non-adulterated turmeric. And so lead went from ubiquitous to nearly nonexistent in the space of just a few years.

That’s a better world for everyone, from turmeric wholesalers to vulnerable kids — all purchased at a shockingly low price. The paper published this month concludes, “with credible information, appropriate technology, and good enough governance, the adulteration of spices can be stopped.”

There’s still a lot more to be done. India, like Bangladesh, has widespread adulteration of turmeric. And safety testing will have to remain vigilant to prevent lead in Bangladesh from creeping back into the spice supply.

But for all those caveats, it’s rare to see such fast, decisive action on a major health problem — and impressive to see it immediately rewarded with such a dramatic improvement in blood lead levels and health outcomes. It’s a reminder that things can change, and can change very quickly, as long as people care, and as long as they act."

Cases of democratic backsliding have been multiplying across the globe in recent years, triggering a restless search among Western policymakers and aid providers for causal explanations. One of the most common ideas to have emerged in this policy community is that the blame lies in democracies’ failure to deliver: When democracies do not provide their citizens with adequate socioeconomic benefits, the thinking goes, many of those citizens will lose faith in democracy and embrace antidemocratic political figures who, once elected, will undercut democratic norms and institutions.

Our findings reinforce on a global basis a crucial insight drawn from the important study by Larry Bartels of democratic trends in Europe—that democracies “erode from the top” rather than at the behest of their citizens. Policymakers and aid providers seeking to stem democratic erosion globally should direct their energies and resources accordingly and prioritize bolstering institutions and norms that can constrain predatory powerholders.

Moreover, even when governmental performance becomes a major issue in a pivotal election, perceptions rather than the realities of performance tend to matter most.

In short, the outcomes of the pivotal elections in the twelve cases under study were determined by a dense mix of social, cultural, political, and economic factors.

Can it be argued that, even if voters in these pivotal elections were not knowingly voting for the dismantling of democracy, once those leaders gained power and began to undercut democratic norms and institutions, their supporters embraced these moves? In other words, if citizens in backsliding countries are not choosing democratic erosion before the fact, do they become contented enablers once such deterioration is underway?

It is important to be cautious, however, about attributing the popularity of some backsliding leaders to genuine voter satisfaction based on promises delivered. Most of these leaders manipulate public opinion in various illegitimate ways. The leaders of Bangladesh, Nicaragua, and Turkey, for example, have cracked down harshly on those who dissent or criticize the ruling party. The leaders of almost all twelve backsliders employ substantial control over the media to shape the information space in their favor. In the 2022 electoral campaign in Hungary, for example, the main opposition candidate for prime minister was given just a few minutes on the state-dominated television to make his case to voters, in contrast to months of wall-to-wall adulatory coverage of Prime Minister Orbán and his party.

Backsliding leaders also frequently use state resources to fund their own parties’ political campaigns and to coopt important businesses and other key groups, while harassing opponents with regulatory retaliation, tax inspections, and other punitive measures. ... In many backsliding contexts, it would be a serious mistake to say that large shares of voters are going along happily and knowingly with democratic erosion—many are being bludgeoned, bribed, or manipulated via illegitimate means into acquiescing.

The idea that a failure of democracies to deliver is a major cause of the recent wave of democratic backsliding is intuitively appealing. Many democracies are struggling to provide secure, prosperous lives for their citizens, and many are struggling to maintain solid democratic norms and institutions. Yet the evidence for a causal link between these two phenomena in twelve prominent contemporary cases of democratic backsliding is mixed at best.

What this suggests is that pointing to poor socioeconomic performance by democratic governments and citizen anger about that performance as the primary drivers of democratic backsliding is a mistake. The onus for backsliding belongs on those leaders who gain power for a wide range of reasons, including in many cases by promising to renovate democracy, but then once in power relentlessly amass unconstrained power by overriding countervailing institutions and undercutting basic democratic norms and procedures. Backsliding in these cases is thus less about a failure of democracy to deliver than about a failure of democracy to constrain—that is, to curb the predatory political ambitions and methods of certain elected leaders.
