‘ you know, only a sadist would suggest this knowing my night job, ’ Kate says idly as she tests out the lacing on the skates & pushes herself to her feet. she is sore, & probably has bruises in places she’s not remotely supposed to be able to bruise but the other had asked weeks ago & she’s not one to shy away from a commitment even in the face of buying out an entire CVS’ worth of icy hot later. 

... or something stronger, but that’s a conversation for her & Mary much later. right now, she’s going to enjoy some time decidedly away from work, the batsuit, & the responsibilities that come with the cowl. ‘ but luckily for you, you’re my favorite sadist, and I’ll let you make it up to me later with dinner - provided I don’t bust my ass out on this ice. ’ there’s a nice little cafe not too far from the rink that has a kosher menu. not that she’s looked ahead of time, or thought about kidnapping the other there if they get a break. 

she’s in the middle of her fourth loop around when she notices the figure dipping into the trees. there’s enough families around it shouldn’t stand out, but it does. sliding to stop beside the other, she nudges her with her shoulder. she shouldn’t get involved, but... well. something’s up, & she can’t not notice it. ‘ what do we want to do? ’

The staccato trundle of heels across the marble floor is interrupted only by the pop of a champagne cork & the resonating chime of glass flutes as a group of party goers finds their way through the rented ballroom. It's the third gala this year, & her second in this particular space, so the sudden noises don't draw her attention anymore. If anything, they all blend together as she does her best to blend in with the wallpaper.

She's not actually supposed to be here tonight but one of the senior officers had called in with nerve gas poisoning after a tangle with Scarecrow so Jacob Kane had predictably called, & when her father asked, Kate wasn't all that likely to say no. She does occasionally moonlight as a contractor when she's not playing up her ruse as a club owner; that's how she'd found herself overseeing the security for an event she hadn't read up on & had very little familiarity with. Still, there was something to be said for the eye candy.

' Kate Kane, ' she offers her hand, taking note of the woman & drawing on what little she remembers of the cursory event briefing her father had given her. ' and you are? '

It threw her off hearing those words from the masked superhero or well whatever you wanted to call it. Because there was only one person that could say something like that to her. Felt a bit like a punch because of course; of course it made sense. Just a bit of a brief stagger as took the words in. “Kate?” 

      the physicality to Clary’s reaction hurts almost more than a physical slap & Kate can’t help but sigh. swallowing thickly, she nods before looking up & meeting those bright green eyes. she loves those eyes. that had never changed. if anything, that had been WHY she’d done what she did & back away - in the hopes, maybe even fear, that Clary would be safer if she kept her distance but the unconscious Rabbit at the end of the alley behind them... well. ‘ yeah, ’ she says finally, knowing Luke is probably going to either give himself an ulcer or finally snap & strangle her for this. ‘ it’s me. uh... surprise? ’

      ‘ hey! ’ except the outburst comes out very muffled between the mouthful of her own fries even before she finishes, wipes her mouth, & laughs. it’s GORGEOUS outside for a change - all slight clouds & warmth instead of the blistering heat they’ve had to deal with during the summer. the crowds are light, too. that’s part of the reason why Kate had decided to kidnap her favorite redhead & grab something to eat while she could. Julia was in town, & had more than graciously agreed to done the suit for a few days to give her a much needed break. ‘ alright, fine. I’ll let it slide this time, but you don’t get to steal ALL OF THEM just because you’re cute, ya know. ’

It wasn’t a wise idea; and it had been pretty scary. How effectively for a while she had been dealing with the guys, so the person they had been bothering could get far away. But then a headache started and threw it off. Certainly took quite a bit, stubbornly refusing to just take the punches. Yet eventually slipped unconscious and they had gone away.

Leaving her bloody, beaten within an inch of her life to just die there.

      she had KNOWN that eventually this could happen & that knowledge gives her no comfort as she races over the rooftops to the last place Luke had caught her on surveillance. it’s cold comfort that it’s not the WONDERLAND GANG or anyone because of her, but Clary had still been targeted, & Kate isn’t even sure she’ll get there in time. she drops out of the sky like the terrifying brick of a shadow she is, slamming a little too hard into the pavement a few feet away. don’t be dead don’t be dead. she’s alive, but barely, & Kate scoops her up off the ground to cradle her against the suit. Mary. she needs to get her to Mary. ‘ hey baby, I’ve got you, ’ she whispers. ‘ try and hold on for me. ’

Clary had startled back into consciousness; tears streaming down her face. As if the pain hadn’t been terrible before, now there was this weird sense of loss overwhelming her too. Through the blur and with the voice piecing together wasn’t alone. Kate was there too which is a bit comforting despite her not knowing how to explain any of it. 

      it’s getting worse. she’s never asked, never pushed, but she can tell whatever it is the other is dealing with... it’s certainly not getting BETTER & she’s worried. she doesn’t say a word, just threads her fingers so gently through that soft, red hair & settles the smaller woman on her lap as softly as she can without jarring her. ‘ I’ve got you, ’ she murmurs softly. ‘ I’m here. I’m not going anywhere, just tell me what you need. ’

      ‘ I’m fine, ’ Kate laughs raggedly, feeling the way the movement itself stings on her battered side. it’s not the worst injury she’s ever had but she can’t say that to the other. worse, she can’t even explain how she got it other than a vague comment about an accident regarding her bike. which, in retrospect, probably sounds worse than what actually happened. maybe. ‘ just sore, I promise. but -- my sister’s a med student. if, uh. if it helps, I’ll have her prod me a bit before I pick you up tonight. assuming we’re... still on, yeah? ’ please say yes, I don’t have to cancel tonight, & god, I really want to see you.

      ‘ got jumped coming home from the office, ’ is the best excuse Kate can offer. it’s bad - worse than usual level of bad, & she knows it but there’s no way she’s copping to the fact she had taken a beat down in the suit & they’re still analyzing trace to determine who could have equipment strong enough they had nearly ruptured the suit. nope, none of that gets to come out - especially when the other has NO IDEA what keeps her up at night. ‘ wanna bring that glass of water over here? sorry I can’t take you out properly, but wouldn’t mind a quiet night in with my favorite girl. ’
