To be frank, Fava found talking to be exhausting enough but begging? Her personal layer of hell. Being personable has never been her strong suit. She has a distinct warm up period. Just ask Griffin. Or Hudson. Or literally anyone.

She knows she has to get over her social block regardless in order to help Wren. The other members of Twelve – and Districts in general – can’t be the only people lobbying for her sister. It would be most effective coming from her, but she can’t get out three words without a frog in her throat. Quite honestly, she’s a mess. She’s stuttering and sniffling like a weak little toddler and she hates it. She hates the fact she can’t utter Wren’s name without panic soaking her every feature. Even through the makeup that Nelly carefully applied in order to make her look more, well, approachable.

It’s been hours since Wren has been on her own, hours since Fava’s been on her feet and talking to anybody that would lend her an ear. What does she have to prove for it? A half-eaten sandwich and a mug of tea, untouched. She’s on the couch, piled under two blankets, when Griffin enters. (She’s freezing today. Can’t seem to regulate her temperature. Is that a symptom of stress or is she finally dying?)

“Before you say anything,” she begins, “I’m warning you that I’m not in a good mood.” Obviously. How could she be? “This is my attempt at being transparent or whatever.”

THE DOOR CLOSES on them, and Plutarch is gone. Six hours has officially begun. Griffin fights hard not to let aimless panic take over, fights hard not to run to the door, open it, and chase after Plutarch, fights hard not to waste any more time. With a deep inhale, he turns right away to Silver, getting down to the important business straight away. "First thing’s first,” he starts, almost shocked by how breathless he sounds, and it hits him just then exactly how fast his heart is beating, and how loudly it’s thudding in his ears. But he push, and moves on. “Multiple lines of communication. My main priority still lies with Twelve, but there are stops I can make along the way.” He moves closer, brows furrowed, despite knowing that this is a place of safety for them.

“I know how you feel about him, but we can count on DeeZee to tell his friends in the upper districts while I make sure Fava, Hudson, and Nelly make it to safety,” he explains, voice low, before continuing. “I assume you and your connections can take care of the first few and middle districts?”

It was a hard, but good day today. Wren and I both have wednesdays off from our job, so we went out to Peigi's place to work on getting the garden there reading for the growing season. It was unseasonably warm for March, but then the last three years in a row have been the warmest globally on record. So, really, while I'm glad the sun has come back (less than a week until the equinox!), I'm worried about the heat waves and wildfire smoke that will certainly hit us this summer. Ugh, not looking forward to that. Just, hopefully no actual wildfires here.

Anyway, it costs a whole two hours worth of wages to drive out there, so we try to spend the whole day when we go- and yes, we've designed the garden around that. We packed a lunch (sandwiches with my sourdough and some black bean tempeh we've been working on), and a plan to fill the day.

See, we haven't been out there since the end of fall, and the crocuses out there have just now started to bloom. (Ours bloomed the last week of January, but we're pretty close to the water and they're halfway up- well I was going to say mountain, but with Mt. Tahoma right there that seems silly. Halfway up a tall hill? They're at roughly 2000 ft of elevation, and we're barely at 300. Still high enough we don't have to worry about the rising sea level though!) So today we went around and took down the temporary deer fence from the last two years (yes, that really should have been taken down last fall, but, well, life happened. What matters is we're getting back on track now... Right?), weeded two 4ft by 70ft rows, refenced one of them, and sowed fava beans as a cover crop/deer lure in the other. We also talked about putting in a real, sturdy deer fence- I think we can afford it this year, and Peigi and xyr parent, Nancy said they could pitch in.

Did I mention that we're getting to garden/farm/forage Peigi and Nancy's land in return for sharing the harvest? It's a pretty sweet deal, and the only reason why Wren and I kept our place in town.

So, anyway, out at Peigi's, we grow the plants that appreciate cooler temperatures (because that urban heat island effect is real! our place is toasty, and I don't appreciated it), plus the plants that are riskier to grow on urban soils, namely root crops and low growing leafy greens. That leaves the fruiting crops and heat lovers for our place (tomatoes, green beans, eggplants, corn, squash, etc, etc. And amaranth. Because amaranth is awesome). Well, and the raspberries and such, because up until now our place has been better protected from the deer. Small yappy dogs are good for that!

Anyway, it's still a bit early to start things out there, as they're still getting hard frosts and a little snow, but I sowed some fava beans, and while the deer have munched on the garlic, it's still there. I'm hoping that with generous enough fertigation that garlic will size up and make a decent harvest. Yeah, yeah, the deer ate them last winter and you'd think I would learn- what, the deer fence? Why didn't that keep them out? Uhhhhh, well, it's not a great deer fence. It wasn't actually a deer fence, or it wasn't originally meant to be for deer, it was originally an electrofence for sheep. And sheep are less nimble than deer.

And since no one wants to hunt the deer any more because of the chronic wasting disease and the cougar and other predator populations haven't rebound yet, there's too many deer, and this is the hungry time of year. So they're a bit desperate, and willing to eat things they normally wouldn't bother. Like garlic. I'm frustrated, but I can't blame them. And I certainly don't want to eat them myself. Ugh. Thus, getting a better deer fence, and in the meantime planting the favas as a distraction. Hopefully it works.

Where was I? Took down the fence, weeded the garlic/other things bed, sowed fava beans, covered them with fall leaves from like 6 months ago, put the fence back up around the garlic bed, checked under the mulch on the other beds (which, the soil looks so much better than it did three years ago! It actually looks like soil now! Deep mulching and cover cropping and patience for the win!). Wren was displeased by all the native black berry, but come on! Having that as a weed instead of the (invasive) cutleaf blackberry? I'll take it! I'll take it home, that is! I'm going to set up a really simple trellis and see if I can grow it semi-domestically so that it's easier to pick the berries. As tasty as they are, the vines are just unpleasant to walk through.

We also went through the wooded area and took out more invasive blackberries and did a light thinning of the native berries there. We really haven't touched that area, so it's super thick and very hard to work through, and it's mostly salmon berry. We'd like more thimbleberry, salal, and huckleberry, so yes, we did remove some salmon berry to make room for the others. I feel a little guilty about it, but it is the most abundant. I put them in the back of the truck and will post to the local groups to see if any one wants some. Not quite the right time of year for transplanting, but they're still dormant, so as long as they're mulched well and watered this year they should do fine. Also worked on expanding the trail, and checked on the nettle patch but they're still doing nothing. Too cold yet.

Now I'm back at our place, and it's time to do a little resting and relaxing before the next work day.

The official launch and unveiling of nominees for the 12th edition of the Central Music Awards finally took place at Fays Lounge in Cape Coast on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

The Central Music Awards is the most prestigious regional music awards scheme in Ghana which has for the past 11 years, celebrated, recognized, honoured and awarded deserving and hardworking musicians who have contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the music industry in the central region.

The official launch and nominees unveiling which was held at Fays Lounge in Cape Coast saw in attendance Music Business Executives, Musicians, Media Personalities, Bloggers, Promoters, industry players and members of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Central Region.

In line with the activities for this year’s Central Music Awards, voting begins on Monday, 2nd October 2023 and ends on Wednesday, 22nd November 2023. The general public can vote for their favourite artiste to win in respective categories by dialling *920*208# or visit njet.app/jetcast

It’s the tea party idk i’m tired of formatting

Her beautiful family from Twelve was quite busy at the tea party today. Or, well, it seemed Fava was doing just fine jumping around from place to place. Nelly has her own worries that she keeps close to her chest, that Fava will be okay and not get caught in the crossfires that we see such as what they’ve seen with Cinna. Nelly hasn’t actually asked how Fava’s felt since their disappearance. She knows the two became close.

She slides next to Fava, who seems to be doing her usual brooding in the moment. “Penny for your thoughts, dear?” She looks over to her, examining her composure. Nelly wants to know what goes on in Fava’s brain, that way she can help her better. She’s identified with Hudson so much more, she wishes she could be more useful to Fava.

BEANS AND PEAS

FRENCH BEANS

Ideal for small gardens, French beans like a sunny, sheltered site and moist, fertile soil. Start seeds off in deep pots indoors, or plant directly outside in late spring in a bed enriched with well-rotted compost or manure. Climbing plants need supports, dwarf types are self-supporting and should be planted 6 inches (15 cm) apart. Keep plants well watered.

PERFECT PODS Pick the pods when they are about 4 in (10 cm) long. Don’t wait until you can see the beans through the pod they will be too tough. Plants should crop for several weeks.

GREEN BEANS

Green beans like a sunny site and soil enriched with plenty of well-rotted compost or manure. Create a support with 8 ft (2.5 m) stakes, and plant a seed near each stake in late spring, or start seeds off in pots indoors and transplant the seedlings in late spring. Tie young stems to the stakes; they will then find their own way up. When they reach the top, pinch out the growing tips. Keep plants well watered.

PICK THEM YOUNG If you leave them to reach maturity, green beans will be stringy and the plant will stop flowering. Pick the young pods frequently, two or three times a week, and the beans should continue to crop for six weeks.

BEAN HARVEST Green beans are delicious when steamed then tossed in a mustard dressing. Freeze any surplus, or use them in chutneys.

FAVA BEANS

Unless you have very severe winters, you can plant fava beans in fall, which allows their roots to establish before spring. Plant seeds about 9 in (23 cm) apart in beds enriched with well-rotted compost or manure. Check the seed packet: some varieties need a stake for support. Pinch out the tips of the growing shoots when plants start to flower to discourage black-fly, and keep crops well watered.

BEST VARIETIES Gardeners’ favorite ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ is a prolific fava bean that can be planted in fall for an early spring harvest of succulent crops.

PEAS

Choose a sunny site for peas and grow them in fertile, free-draining soil. In spring, plant seeds in a shallow drill 2 inches (5 cm) apart, with sticks for the stems to scramble up. Cover plants with nets to prevent birds from eating them, and water frequently. Sow seeds every 10–14 days for a long harvest.

SWEET TASTE Peas are ready to harvest three months after sowing. Eat crops immediately or freeze them, their flavor deteriorates quickly.

Roman Lumber makes way for “Roman Square” at 11th & McKean

What was a series of low-slung commercial buildings in the 2000 block of South 11th Street is now an empty lot. Soon, that lot will be filled with eight brand-new four-story townhouses called “Roman Square.”

“Within the next week, weather permitting, we hope to begin excavation” on the development at the southwest corner of 11th and McKean streets, said Bob Shaw, director of development for P & A Associates.

Each of the eight units in this project from Canno Design will have four stories plus a roof deck. All will have three bedrooms and three bathrooms; all will also have a powder room on the street level, except for the unit with two garages on the street level. Access to the garages will be via a central driveway that uses an existing curb cut on South 11th Street.

Six of the houses will have garages on their street floors that can accommodate two cars. The two units on 11th Street closest to Emily Street will each have a one-car garage located on the street level of the northerly unit.  The southerly unit will have a den and a flex room on the street level.

When the project went before the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association for approval in March of 2018, neighbors had two principal objections. One was the loss of a parking space on 11th Street. The developer pointed out that a curb cut existed to access the warehouse torn down to make way for this project, so no legal spaces would be lost.

The other objection related to the buildings’ height, which was three feet over the height limit for its zoning district. The EPX Civic Zoning Committee recommended approval of the zoning variance for this project with the stipulation that it remain at the height limit, but the Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the variance for the project as designed.

Shaw explained that the extra height represented a compromise in order to meet both neighbors’ and buyers’ desires. New construction homes typically have ceiling heights of at least nine feet, he said, but “we made the first floor eight feet, which is pretty low for new construction standards. We felt we could do this because the first floors were largely taken up by the garages.

“The fourth-floor ceilings are also a little under nine feet,” he continued. “We did the best we could in order to fit the parking in, which was something the neighbors also wanted, and this is where we ended up.”

The houses are not yet listed for sale, but Shaw expects they will be shortly. He estimates that the homes will be pre-construction priced around $699,000.

Promotions for the homes posted on the Realtor.com, Redfin, and Trulia websites describe the homes as having a living area of 2,765 square feet.
