I have a new AU based on a dream I had last night: Partners-In-Crime AU!
Where Reader is best friends and a fighting team with Gambit, in an AU where they were both kinda captured at a young age to fight enemies, but Gambit is platonic yandere over Reader, and Reader isn't sure anything is wrong because Gambit is their only friend. So, Gambit gets captured eventually, and Reader goes through a traumatic experience while getting him free, resulting in his more yandere traits to make themselves known. He never meant to get caught, and he's sorry Reader got their hands bloody, more bloodied than they ever wanted, just to free him... But he's also more yandere now, because they didn't abandon him, or leave him behind when they could have. And during the entire time they've been a team, he's secretly killed off enemies who almost killed Reader, while Reader was none the wiser. When Reader frees him, he gets vengeance for the both of them, and now Reader and him are joining the X-Men, who will hopefully be a better team than the people who used the two of them...
(And Rogue is here, too, and makes their duo a trio!)

another parners in crime au ask
so remy is more willing to forgive the others, after he brakes and spills the secret he’s been keeping for all this time would things go back to how they used to be? but with reader vary distrusting now and possibly debating if they should try to leave again with or without remy (he seems happy now…they just want him to stay happy) i can see remy eventually trying to convince reader to stay, that this really is the best place for the two of them and that even if they tried to leave again they’ll need a better plan then the had last time
also you mentioned reader had a trama that made them hesitant to kill, do they still have nightmares about said trama? if so im picturing them going to remys room late one night and knocking on his door to shyly ask for snuggles just like they did when they and remy were kids
That is what I was thinking. Remy would want the two of them to stay, after reaching an agreement with the platonic yan X-Men. He knows he and Reader need help, need food, need shelter, and the X-Men will give that to them freely. They'll even be their family. They just- can't leave. Not without one of them, and they can't leave for good. Which Remy doesn't like being tied down or forced to do anything, but he's not risking Reader getting hurt or having their enemies find them. So, he tells himself, this is a necessary evil...
Reader does still have nightmares about the incident. They sometimes dream Remy never made it back with them. A lot worries Reader, so when their dreams are worse than usual, or a new horrible nightmare pops up, they go into Remy's room and ask him if they can stay. He never says no, and he's snuggling them close and stroking their hair and letting them listen to his heartbeat, anything to calm his friend...
(The event that traumatized Reader? They accidentally killed someone. It came out of left field, they didn't realize they used too much force, and actually killed someone. It was a bad person trying to hurt them, but it still haunts them...)

ooo
so what happens to partners in crime reader after remy and them are caught, i can’t picture them trusting any of the x men now especially if they were separated from their brother figure
i can see them fighting tooth and nail to get to him with little to no success, in the end the only thing they managed to do was injure and farther exhaust themselves yet they still won’t let any of the x men near them
i can’t decide if kurt and rouge would have the best chance of getting back on readers good side or if they would be who’s betrayal hurt the most because they likely would’ve been who reader and their brother figure were the closest to
Those two are forced to take therapy, with Charles and Hank. Reader isn't kept from Remy all the time, but Remy keeps trying to resist telling anyone about what's bothered him the entire time, the reason he had himself and Reader join the X-Men. He's told that no one will be angry with him, that no one hates them, they only want what's best for him and Reader-
Whenever they mention Reader, he gets antsy. So the adults realize that's where the problem lies. Something that involves Reader. They press, keeping him either sedated or drowsy, while asking questions, lightly prodding...
And he finally cracks, too scared to keep fighting, and they get the answer... It's just not one anyone wanted, or hoped was the reason:
Their old group, after Reader helped save him, saw that Reader's traumatic experience affected them, made them more hesitant. That Reader wasn't a killer like they wanted. So, they told Remy, ordered him, to kill them. And he couldn't. They were his best friend, his only family, the one person who mattered to him. He couldn't kill them. He couldn't. And it broke him, in a way, knowing others wanted Reader dead.
So he went to the X-Men, hoping they'd help him keep them alive.
Let's just say after all of that, they're hugging Remy and having to comfort him, while trying to reassure him he isn't bad, he didn't betray Reader, he saved them, he's good-
(Remy is more willing to forgive Kurt and Rogue, as he reasons they knew nothing about all of this. Reader is wary of everyone, but refuses to talk until they know Remy is okay...)

partners in crime reader being just as protective of remy as is of them
like no he’s not being strange, he’s just…like that sometimes. He’s hiding something? pfft no he wouldn’t hide something from them and if he is their sure it’s important
he’s their best friend, their brother figure their not gonna let any weird culty people mess with him …even if the x men are stronger than they are
reader: I’ll give ‘em a ya! and a hiya! and wa! and I’ll kick them!
That is Reader's reasoning. Remy wouldn't hide anything from them, but if he did, then it must be important. He wouldn't lie to hurt them, okay? Reader warned him of what they saw or heard, and they're so relieved when Remy is fully with them. He has a plan, a distraction, and an escape route. All it needs is the two of them running like h*ll.
It works!
Until Wolverine is on their tail, hunting them down and dragging them back. And Reader is scared, because they aren't sure what's going going be done to them, or their best friend/adopted brother...
Remy finds himself set up in a room he can't leave, where he's told they're going to get to the bottom of his recent behavior, and why he's so scared. The X-Men adults promise to be as gentle as they can be, and list a few methods they can use to keep Remy relaxed while they talk and bond. Remy... he's not pleased, one bit. And he threatens that if anything happens to Reader, he'll make them pay...
That's the X-Men's first clue as to what might be upsetting him, thus keeping him closed off from most of the group...

so the culty x men in the partners in crime au don’t like to let people leave? interesting >:]
What if for whatever reason reader caught onto something they shouldn’t have, saw something they were never supposed to, whatever happens is freaks them out enough to where they don’t want to be there anymore
so now they’re going to remy and giving him the choice to get his stuff and come with them if he wants to, they aren’t going to make him go with them, they know he likes it here
they just…can’t stay here…not after what they heard/saw
Yeah, Remy says he's going with Reader. He may like it there, but if they scare Reader or try anything, he said he'd leave and take Reader with him. So what does he do? Set up a distraction so they can sneak away!
It works...
For fifteen minutes.
Then they're being chased by Wolverine, who is not happy either of them left, and Remy is about ready to blow up a boulder with how stressed he is. Reader at least is safe... He misses Rogue, though. He knows Reader does too. But... the X-Men were weird. Friendly. Dangerous. Unified. Protective. It's best he and Reader get the h*ll out of dodge if they want to be able to leave.
(I'm not sure either of them actually escapes Wolverine or the X-Men... They're experienced, sure, but the X-Men have numbers and extra mutations. Remy and Reader are two teens, they can't compete with a man with knives for hands, some mind controlling 40 year old, a weather goddess, and whoever the h*ck else is with them! It was a losing battle from the start...)
(And Remy still won't mention why he left their old group, and won't give his reasons for leaving the X-Men, besides that Reader needed him... The X-Men are going to get to the bottom of it, whether Remy likes it or not)

so for the partners in crime au im imagining reader has the potential to be as much of a menace as remy is, they are the partner of the ming of thief’s afterall so im picturing they get themselves into their fair share of trouble
and sometimes it’s trouble they can’t get out of without getting a little or a lot hurt in the process
how would remy handle his little hellion of a partner?
He's almost always with them, and is the main reason they get out of a lot of situations. When they join the X-Men, it's usually Reader getting them out of the situations now, because the X-Men fall for puppy dog eyes from Reader, and aren't monsters to them or to Remy (just weird and cult-like, with a penchant for not letting anyone leave-)
Reader tends to be the brawn to Remy's brains, but Reader is also the heart. They may not be very big or very strong, but they know how to bite, kick, and scratch, and how to effectively pick locks. Remy is proud of them for that. He's proud of then in general, but especially when Reader puts their skills to use. They're a moral compass for the two of them, and are rather honest, usually, about how they're feeling. Remy likes that they're real, that they don't try to be something they're not (at least they were that way when they were younger).
The reason Remy and Reader left their old group was for a reason Remy can't bring himself to tell anyone, which sometimes puts a strain on relationships between him and others. He's scared of something, or upset, but it irks Reader that he won't tell them what it is, and it makes the platonic yans worried and suspicious for him...
(Reader and Remy share a room the first few weeks. They mainly just fall asleep in a blanket pile, after playing card games until they fell asleep. Reader can't beat Remy at most card games, but they are surprisingly good at UNO...)
(Remy keeps an eye out while they sleep, even when he's exhausted. He's caught whispers in the halls, worries and plans in the darkness, but he isn't sure what they mean or what the full plot is...)

Partners in Crime AU has Reader trying to figure out how to be normal around the X-Men after they and Gambit join the team. This AU is set in a world where its usual for people to use mutants as soldiers or weapons, so the X-Men being a group focused on helping mutants and teaching them to defend themselves and overall being a family... Reader wants that badly, for them and Gambit.
Gambit agrees, it was his idea to choose a group that woukd actually protect Reader, rather than hurt them or set then up up die. He likes that he gets that too, but he needs his best friend, his adopted sibling, alive, over everything else. And this group promises safety, peace... If the two of them only have to play by their rules, then that's a deal he's willing to take. But the moment they do anything funny, try to hurt them or use them, he's taking Reader and running.
The X-Men/Brotherhood simply want to help these two teens, who've been through h*ll, and they hope to provide them with a safe environment and plenty of food and healthier coping mechanisms. Rogue is their first friend, and Gambit falls for her, but she's also Reader's other friend, so the duo become a trio! (Sometimes).
The X-Men/Brotherhood have some cult-like ideas and actions, but Reader doesn't see them yet. And Gambit? He sees they aren't entirely peaceful, but he realizes the danger isn't directed at him or his best friend, but rather, at their enemies... He doesn't like the idea of being tied to them, unable to leave, possibly even brainwashed or hypnotized to want to stay, but if it keeps Reader with him, if it keeps them both alive and fed and happy... He might chance it...

so for the partners in crime au bc i love me some gambit
imagine if he and reader were siblings (blood, adoptive or self proclaimed dealers choice) would that make him protective
also just kurt and reader teasing gambit and rouge
i love sibling dynamics sm not gonna lie
Yeah, it would, actually, make Gambit protective, especially if Reader was his twin or younger sibling. He's all about keeping his best friend/ adopted sibling or blood sibling with him, safe and sound, and happy. Even if he's using his charm to keep them from looking into some of his darker habits...
Reader and Kurt, pestering their two siblings together, just joking at their expense and setting those two up to be on a date or to kiss-
Yes, chaotic friends/adopted family benefits!
(Gambit and Rogue might encourage it a little, seeing Reader and Kurt so happy to pester them- but they will pay those two back, likely by babying them when they get sick...)
