I have no idea where I heard it, likely a Q&A, but I know for a fact there is some reason why I know Takaya to canonically like poetry. So I can kinda see them trying to tie in something referencing his more obscure character traits-- in similar vain to their attempts to improve his vague depiction from the first game? ( or just an easter egg for obscure takaya facts lol )

Poems from Japan...... I'm assuming this is a book that would be known relatively well in Japan, then? Despite the author being American? Well enough for Atlas to reference it do you think?

I mean I see the resemblance.... The book is, indeed, a little on the small side irl. The border might be slightly too thick, but if this is meant to be a reference, they likely made that look-alike texture for the book themselves, not literally copied a picture of the book into the game. I'd love a better look at it, but I doubt anyone would rip the texture for his book or something haha--

{{ ok so. Miles and miles of me rambling incoherently about the musical--

I never really got to see the kotone version of the musical?? I'm not sure why... Maybe I was already on hiatus by the time it came out, i'm not sure, but I'm just now seeing it!! And~ adding it to my extensive Strega knowledge!! dskhgdkhs

First thing, I really love how Jin is depicted in the femme MC musical,,, a very slight change, but Jin is very distinctly an active agent of Takaya's agenda in this depiction. I love these two together !! They are such good friends !!!

There's a great little musical bit ( its short so im not sure i'd call it a song, but it is a musical tidbit lol ) where they actually depict Takaya,,, doing cult leader stuff! And he's preaching to a crowd. And Jin is an excellent hype man!! And its sinister but they have such great chemistry-- they're efficient together, yknow? And once again, its obvious that Jin is not a victim. He's a cunning and willing accomplice.

And even more interesting-- when they come to break out Chidori, Jin actually talks more than Takaya, being the one to say the line " you don't belong anywhere else but with us" and adding on to that sentiment that "some things are never meant for people like us" of which Takaya simply says "Harsh, but true" basically lmao. Takaya also indicates more open resentment, referring to Junpei as a "Self righteous hypocrite". As always, reading between the lines of his cool, confident demeanor indicates the sincere emotion behind his actions.

Combining this with Jin's canon tendency to refer to Chidori as a very dear friend to him? Its emotionally complicated. Jin is not manipulating her like a supervillain, he is emotionally manipulating her accidentally through self projection, the fear of losing one of his only friends, and giving bad advice from traumatic experience.

THUS INDICATING THE EMOTIONAL COMPLEXITY of Takaya AND Jin's relationship with Chidori. Because if both characters can say that line interchangeably.... their motivations are probably quite similar, even if they express it differently. Especially because Jin is so in agreement with Takaya in that play. Takaya is also giving bad advice due to traumatic experience-- made evident by his earnest resentment for the heroes-- he just does it on a wide scale and with a far more calculated way of speaking. But the origin of why they think the way they do is identical.

And then, of course, the most important scene-- showing exactly how Takaya saved Jin, its clear that Takaya also saved Chidori-- just more literally speaking, in that he shot the men leading them into missions that would inevitably kill them and ran away with them in tow. ( Somehow he had a massive revolver-- they do not explain where he found the gun, I guess he stole it off a lab assistant? lmao ) There was no reason for him to do it except to help them. But, the reason its most memorable to Jin is that he interrupted Jin mid suicide attempt-- seeming to be driven to kill those men because of Jin's near death. ( saying the same phrase as the bridge scene! )

And there is something very striking about the way the actor plays his younger self, accompanying the shadow actors, as so emotional. Because in this version of the story, this is the first time we see Takaya scream like that, let alone to save someone else, completely shattering your perception of this character who was otherwise calm and sinister up until now. There is really no way to interpret what he did as anything other than an act of empathy to stop someone from dying. And what an unexpected side to see of the....... death cult messiah lmao.

mini observation-- I know this is just a thing people do on stage plays to cleanly transition and not leave props behind, but I like the detail of Takaya picking up Chidori's weapon and looking at it for a moment before he leaves. idk lol. }}

Taka-nyan hisses at the therapist when dragged into the room though, scruffy Jesus man just got grumpy than ever when dragged to the therapist place. Gunshots may or may not be heard minutes later before the window shatters for him to escape. Sorry of the crazy thought right now, pfft.

{{ we know takaya's first human kills were two lab assistants on the night they escaped, with the mysterious giant revolver he somehow found and stole. A reasonable time to kill someone, perhaps.

but what do you think gave him the idea to start killing for money.... I think, totally on a fanfiction whim, that it was an escalating thing-- first killing someone on accident, letting him realize how murders work in the dark hour. But then, he decides to kill someone as an unrequested favor-- maybe he had a fondness for someone from a distance and just decided to try to be nice in his own weird way, "deal" with a problem they were having-- and THEN he realizes that this is a power people would be interested in in the right context. Even if not the first context lol

But can you picture a like 13-15 year old takaya fresh from the lab and still a little insular trying to be nice like-- " I saw they were bothering you, so I got rid of them for you. No thanks necessary, it was quite effortless. :) " and you're like?????? what the hell do you mean by that, scary pale boy? dskhgdskghs

And that terrified reaction taught him to not be so open to doing favors for those that don't appreciate his work, but... not to stop.... killing, though. lmao }}
