The Japanese translation of Chapter 3 gave us some new information on the Man behind the tree, so let's talk about it! (JP transcriptions and translations in Alt Text!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of people have noted that Kris is in their Light World form in this scene, but the Japanese version also has the Aces and the Man himself speak in the hiragana-heavy style of the Light World rather than the kanji-heavy style of the Dark World.
There is another mysterious character who speaks in the Light World style, however.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
--The sender of this Valentine from the 2024 Winter Newsletter. Even if you can't read Japanese, you can probably notice how the bottom two paragraphs (where the letter begins) don't contain characters of the same complexity as those above (the narration).
The Man and the letter writer also both speak in a masculine tone, ending sentences like these in -ka na and referring to themselves as watashi and the listener as kimi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both the Man and the letter writer also address the listener with commands ending in -nasai, which is a firm yet gentle kind of command that has a quite parental or caregiving tone to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, the Man and the letter writer (who, based on these lines, could very likely be the same person) come across as warm and friendly toward the listener, whom they address as a child.
There is actually one more speaker whose speech patterns also resemble those of the Man behind the tree.
These unused lines can be found in the code for Chapter 1:
Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye? The gash weaves down as if you cry. The pain itself is reason why.
These lines do not actually appear together in the code, but they have long been theorized to go together based on the fact that they rhyme. The Japanese version of the code seems to back this up, as these lines have actually been translated so that they rhyme there as well!
kimi no kao... sore wa kizu kai? sore to mo me na no kai? pakkuri wareta kirikizu ga maru de namida no ato mitai. riyuu wa sono itami jitai. Translated to English: "Your face... is that a wound? Or is it your eye?" "The cut, split wide open, looks almost like a tear streak." "The reason is that pain itself."
These lines use the Dark World style of speech, but the speaker addresses the listener as kimi and ends their questions with the friendly and highly masculine particle -kai, which is something the Man also does throughout his speech in Ch 3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is of course always the possibility that a future chapter will disprove this, but for now, there is good evidence that these three speakers may be one and the same!

Trial 1 - John Doe Voice Drama (Side-by-Side English Translation)
Preface: I’ll say this upfront: The John Doe VD translation on YouTube has a lot of mistranslations. Some things are just pulled out of thin air, especially with Kotoko’s dialogue. I hope this translation can help clear things up and, since the original text from the scriptbook is also provided, you are free to double check the translations itself and develop your thoughts from there. As Yamanaka has said in his Twitter (A shallow understanding from someone on the outside can feel just as violent as a direct attack). Translators have an ethical duty to respect the original writers and the speech community (the language and its culture) in their translations. Otherwise, it can contribute to a lot of harm. Especially when it comes to portrayals of persons that come from and are shaped by our present-day world, mistranslations of the themes found in this series can result in a lot of violence down the line. Google Docs version of this translation. If using/reuploading/reposting this translation, do not remove the translator's notes, do not color code the translations, and do not change the translations. Any additional Translator's Notes will be found in the replies. Check the original post before reblogging as TLs are occasionally revisited and edited.
A dimly lit interrogation room.
Mikoto is sitting on a chair in the interrogation room, legs dangling, looking bored. Suddenly, he lets out a deep sigh. Unbeknownstly, he looked up towards the heavens. MIKOTO: …What am I doing in a place like this? I… ES: Truth be told, I wonder that as well. MIKOTO: Ah-! ES: Well, it’s MILGRAM’s job to make that clear. Before you knew it, the door to the interrogation room was open and ES stared at MIKOTO. MIKOTO gasps—startled—and almost falls out of the chair. MIKOTO: Hold on-! Don’t scare me like that, Warden-kun! Isn’t it common sense to knock before opening a door? ES: Shut up, don’t tell me what to do. MIKOTO: Isn’t that tyrannical of you though?! ES disregards MIKOTO’s words indifferently, taking none to heart, and sits in the chair opposite to him. They cross their legs arrogantly. MIKOTO: Hey, hey- no- Despite calling it an “interrogation”... I’m really not hiding anything. [T/N: Calling something an “interrogation” implies questioning someone in order to get information that may or may not be hidden. Interrogations can sometimes use threats or violence. Age. MIKOTO: Uh, well… Mikoto Kayano, 23 years-old… Ah, well I’ve been meaning to talk to you for a while, Warden-kun. [T/N: ES uses the katakana spelling of ミコト (mikoto) which frames and highlights MIKOTO’s difference from Es, him the Prisoner and Es the Warden. Katakana is typically used for words with an outsiderness (ex. foreign loanwords), for emphasis, and/or to make something seem “louder” in some aspect. However, MIKOTO uses kanji spelling of his name 榧野尊 (kayano mikoto) which is the proper and legal way, attributing to him a groundedness in humanity compared to the alienation that spelling something in katakana can make. This is why, instead of translating 榧野尊 as “MIKOTO KAYANO”, it was translated into “Mikoto Kayano” instead.] ES: What? Make it short. MIKOTO: Hey, when is this going to end? ES: Hah? ES looks puzzled. They were not expecting MIKOTO’s question. Seeing this, MIKOTO gets fired up. MIKOTO: No-! Of course! Look- I was suddenly brought to this place and-! Telling me things I don’t understand like being a "murderer"… Is this some sort of prank? A reality TV show? Where I’m being monitored?!! I thought that that was what I was trying to endure!?! That’s why I was getting along with everyone else! If it was TV, you have to be careful with how you look! But, but! It’s been going on for way too long!?! What is this! [T/N: ヒトゴロシ (hitogoroshi) “murderer” is spelled with katakana. In order to translate over the vibes that gives highlight and distance to the word, "murderer" is placed within quotation marks.] ES: Ha… You still think that? That MILGRAM is some kind of funny little joke? MIKOTO: I really do… Of course I’d do!
MIKOTO is breathing heavily, calming his breathing down little-by-little, a despondent look on his face. MIKOTO: …Because I, myself, really don’t remember anything. Even if you say I committed a crime or "murdered" someone, I really don’t know anything… I’m just your standard, everyday lowly office worker… ES: Hm… MIKOTO: What’s up with you? A person’s talking seriously and you’re here grinning. ES: …Come to think of it, this is the first time a prisoner’s tried to feign ignorance saying, “I really don’t have any recollection of anything whatsoever.” MIKOTO: I’m not feigning it! Seriously! I really don’t know! Look, look into my eyes! Look! MIKOTO holds ES by the shoulders and turns them to face him directly, looking intently into their eyes.
ES: Don’t touch me. You’re being too casual. [T/N: Alternatively translated as: “Don’t touch me. You’re being too buddy-buddy [when you’re a Prisoner and I’m the Warden].” which preserves the implications/nuances.]
MIKOTO: C’mon, just look at me seriously! MIKOTO: So? I’m being truthful, right? ES: Who knows. Do you expect me to say, “You don’t look like you’re lying” or something? I don’t make judgements based on vague things like that.
MIKOTO is losing his patience, annoyed at the lack of progress in the conversation. He takes his hands off of ES’ shoulders. MIKOTO: Ah c’mon..! No- Wait a second. Warden-kun has no idea what I did in the first place, right? ES: Ah, I have absolutely no clue. MIKOTO: What’s with that! Because of that, isn’t it oppressive of you to brand me a “murderer”? [T/N: 横暴 (ougou) can mean violence, oppression, tyranny. When MIKOTO says “Isn’t it oppressive of you” there’s a sense of him calling ES’ action of branding him a label as serious as “murderer” even though ES has no idea what he did or if he really did commit a crime (since ES is going off of what Jackalope/MILGRAM told them) violent— something that hurts, damages, or even kills.] ES: There’s no correlation in that. MILGRAM said that you’re a murderer. That’s enough for me. MIKOTO: Why are you just blindly entrusting your belief to that? There’s no sense to it… ES: … MIKOTO: Anyway, I honestly have no idea. I haven’t killed anyone. I haven’t done anything bad. I’ve just been diligently living an ordinary life and yet- I get caught up in some weird, suspicious thing- what’s with that! [T/N: By "weird, suspicious thing" he means MILGRAM.] MIKOTO is getting more and more irritated, unconsciously standing up from his chair. At the same time, he slowly lowers his raised fist. MIKOTO: …I want to believe that that’s just a joke…I want to think that this… MIKOTO: I have a life, y’know? I toiled so hard just to get into the company of my dreams… If I get fired, you better take responsibility… [T/N: Being fired in Japan is an arduous task. Generally, if you get fired, you need to make sure that you: (1) get the certificate of dismissal/reason for firing; (2) go through the process of switching your pension and insurance; (3) make sure you get your unemployment insurance/severance pay/compensation; and optionally (4) contest the firing. There’s a lot of paperwork involved and the way companies are structured makes it a pain + take a long time to get anything done. Not to mention the emotional labor it takes to deal with bureaucracy since it’s not unheard of that employers can gaslight or be hostile.]
ES: …I see. How interesting. MIKOTO: What’s so interesting? ES grins, genuinely amused. They clap their hands in an exaggerated manner. ES: Alright, for now, why don’t we go ahead and talk under that assumption of yours? …A thought experiment. MIKOTO, you haven’t done anything. MIKOTO: Yes! That’s right, Warden-kun! ES: For now. For now, let’s pretend you’re not Prisoner Number 9 MIKOTO. That’s right, you’re just MIKOTO-kun. MIKOTO: That’s right, let’s go with MIKOTO-kun! I’ll also put in the effort and call you “Su-kun” [T/N: The “effort” MIKOTO’s putting in is more so “affection” (親愛, shin ai). Alternatively translated as: “I’ll also put in some dear effort and call you “Su-kun"] エス 「それはいらん。 ES: That’s unnecessary. Don’t get carried away. MIKOTO: Eeh…? ES approaches MIKOTO, glaring up at him. [T/N: There’s wordplay here with ミコトに近づき (mikoto ni chikadzuki). Chikadzuki can mean “approach” but it also means “making acquaintance with someone”. In the context of the interrogation, ES is both approaching MIKOTO and making acquaintance, getting to know him.] ES: In exchange for going along with it, for now you’ll have to swallow what I’m saying as fact and that MILGRAM isn’t some show. It’s reality. MIKOTO: Uh… so, this is some sort of institution or facility that assembles "murderers"? Through song and mental footage and stuff? ES: That’s right. If we’re only going by what you say, the other nine people are all murderers. MIKOTO: Isn't it way too dangerous to be in a place like that? None of them seem like a person who could do something like that at all… Look, why’s there even an elementary schooler here?
ES furrowed their eyebrows at MIKOTO’s words. ES: …You shouldn’t say that to AMANE. It’ll just become a hassle. MIKOTO: Huh? Why? ES: Well, I can understand where you’re coming from. I also learned this while interrogating people- The impression of a person is inevitably influenced by their external appearance. MIKOTO: Isn’t it~? Yun-chan and Mu-chan are just high school girls. Haru-kun has a face that looks like he can’t even kill a bug, and Fuuta doesn’t seem like he can even steal an umbrella. And see- Mappi just seems like a good person. Uh, as for Kazu-san and Shidou-san… Well, there’s a chance that Koto-chan might have done something like that 'cause of her vibes.  [T/N: Umbrellas get stolen so often in Japan that it’s not strange to think that a normal person would steal one at some point, implying that MIKOTO thinks that Fuuta wouldn’t even do something bad that’s seemingly normalized/follow common behaviors.] ES: …I’ll take your character evaluations into consideration, MIKOTO-kun. Nevertheless, they are the humans MILGRAM selected. Without a doubt, they are connected to someone’s death. [T/N: The “they” そいつら (soitsura) in “they are the humans MILGRAM selected” has derogatory connotations with it. Also, people who use the term 間違いなく (machigai naku) are generally thought of as people who are prideful or perfectionists.] MIKOTO: Uhuh… Well, alright then. I’ll believe that for now.
MIKOTO relents, a bitter look on his face. ES points their finger sharply. ES: Well then. Why do you believe that the Innocent MIKOTO-kun was chosen for such a place? ES: Oh? MIKOTO: If we ignore the finer details of MILGRAM's criteria for judgement… it could be that it’s a blunder from something like having the same name, similar external appearance or something. ES: You’re saying that it’s a MILGRAM malfunction? [T/N: Alternatively translated into: “You’re saying that it’s a failure on MILGRAM’s part?” 誤作動 (gosadou) can mean malfunction; failure; operating incorrectly.] MIKOTO: Yeah, yeah, that’s right. I can’t think of anything else that it could possibly be. ES: Really? Frankly, I can think of one thing coming to mind. ES looks at MIKOTO’s face. ES: You’ve forgotten that you’ve killed a person. MIKOTO’s eyes widened at ES’ words. MIKOTO: Huh? Forgotten? That you killed a person? Is that even possible? ES: You’re not lying; MILGRAM is correct; if you’re to accept both clauses, it’s only natural to arrive at this answer. [T/N: The 正しい (tadashii) in “MILGRAM is correct” can mean “correct”, “right”, “righteous”/“just”, “proper” etc.] MIKOTO: Forgotten… Me? Killing a person…? ES: They say that humans sometimes put a lid on memories in order to avoid stress. For example, dissociative amnesia. MIKOTO: …S-stress? No, no way- There’s no way I could’ve killed someone while not even knowing it- That can’t be possible… ES: …I have no choice but to consider something along these lines if I’m going to believe your statements. I trust MILGRAM more than I believe in you. There’s no doubt about that. いや……いやいや」 MIKOTO: …No….No, no- エス 「看守として、断言しよう。 ES: As Warden, let’s go ahead and assert this: You. are. a. murderer. MIKOTO: Wait a minute- No, no, no- Time out time out- …You’re driving me crazy…please stop it. You keep saying such… awful things…
MIKOTO scratches his head in frustration. Seeing this, ES takes a deep breath. MIKOTO: Without knowing it…becoming a murderer…haha- there’s no way, no way… ES: Hmph. Let’s give it some time. Tugging in the threads of your memory would do you some good. As MIKOTO groans in a voiceless voice, ES turns their back and walks away. [T/N: 声にならない声 (koe ni naranai koe) “voiceless voice” has a nuance that you’re being assaulted with the emotions welling up in your heart that you can’t express into words.] ES: A murderer who has no memory of killing people… If that’s the case… how should I think about this… ES walks around the room, muttering to themself.
MIKOTO: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! ES: !? MIKOTO strikes ES hard with a chair. ES, being light, gets flown across and slams into the wall. MIKOTO: Aaaaah!!! MIKOTO continues on, throwing the chair with all his might, making a large noise. ES: Guh-! Wh… What are you- MI- KOTO…!?! MIKOTO: Hah…hah…hah…!!! ES can’t make sense of the situation. MIKOTO’s eyes are bloodshot, breathing heavily- wildly, like he’s a different person. ES: Ack… You can attack me..!? T-there’s no way… MIKOTO: Aaaaaah! Fuck! Fucker-! You’re so fucking annoying!! [T/N: MIKOTO’s accent has changed. Before, he was speaking in a typical, standard Japanese accent you’d hear from people in Tokyo (not Tokyo accent, just standard Japanese accent).] ES: Prisoners shouldn’t be able to attack the Warden!! MIKOTO: Shut the fuck up, you piece of shit!! MIKOTO stomps down on ES with all his might. ES: Augh-! Guh…! MIKOTO: Yapping on and on and on- I’ll fucking beat you to death, piece of shit!! ES: Ngh-…! Guh…!!
Another stomp, then another. Again, and again, and again. MIKOTO: Going on and on and on-! Acting all high and mighty like you aren’t just a kid! Serves you fuckin’ right-! っ…… ES: …re..member… MIKOTO: Ha!? I can’t hear you! You’re nothing more than an unimportant brat, a fuckin’ nobody!! Despite being injured and bleeding from the mouth, the light in ES’ eyes doesn’t disappear. They glare at MIKOTO. MIKOTO: Ha-? Heh- Hahahahahahaha! You prefer it when it hurts more, huh? MIKOTO picks up a chair laying around. Slowly raising it above his head. ES: Guh… MIKOTO: That’s fine. I’ll crush your face in as much as you want… ES: …Go ahead… and try… MIKOTO: As you wish! RAAAAAAAAARGHH! [T/N: The -やってやるよ (-yatte yaru yo) in 望み通りやってやるよ (nozomi doori yatte yaru yo) adds a cheeky nuance of “doing the action for the sake of fulfilling ES’ wish (“go ahead and try”)”.]
The moment MIKOTO’s about to bring the chair down, a kick meets his side. KOTOKO: Hmph!
MIKOTO: Gah-!? MIKOTO falls along with the chair, a loud noise emanating. He staggers up to his feet, clutching his head. MIKOTO: …ugh. Aaargh-! What’s with you?! ES: !? You…! KOTOKO: Looks like you narrowly escaped death, Warden-san. [T/N: KOTOKO talks in a feminine way, as demarcated by her usage of わ (wa). Her mature feminine way of speaking is found all throughout all the VDs she’s featured in.] ES: Kotoko… Why… KOTOKO: I’ll tell you later. MIKOTO: …Each and every one of them… MIKOTO launches himself at her. KOTOKO readies into stance. MIKOTO: YOU ALL PISS ME OOOOOOOFFF! [T/N: 俺 (ore) pronoun is spelled with kanji in John Doe. Whereas in Neoplasm, ore is spelled in katakana as オレ] コトコ 「……!」 KOTOKO: …! KOTOKO dodges MIKOTO’s wide swing with minimal movement. MIKOTO: Gah-! Fuck! Stop fuckin’ around with me! [T/N: It sounds like MIKOTO’s speaking in a Yonezawa dialect/accent. ちょこまか (chokko maka) is a phrase you’d typically hear from the Yonezawa dialect. Yonezawa is a city in the Yamagata prefecture, in the Tohoku region. In Neoplasm, MIKOTO speaks in Kanto region accent/dialect and Edo dialect/roughspeak. Meanwhile, in his Trial 3 voicelines, MIKOTO speaks with a Kansai region dialect in some lines. Insofar, as of Trial 3, it's possible that he's spoken in 4 dialects/accents.] KOTOKO: Hah-! Ngh-! …Seems as if it’s motions that a typical, ordinary person would make. MIKOTO: SHUT IT!!! KOTOKO: Ngh…!
KOTOKO staggers back from the force of MIKOTO’s kick. She seems perplexed by the power of the blow, which was greater than she could’ve expected. KOTOKO: I couldn’t have imagined that a strike with that amount of force could’ve come from someone with a muscle mass like his. [T/N: It's implied that MIKOTO lacks muscle mass which is why KOTOKO thought a strike with that amount of force was inconceivable/unthinkable. Also, the way KOTOKO is talking sounds like she’s verbally taking notes on MIKOTO’s behaviour/aptitude/and other information.] あああ」 MIKOTO: So fucking persistent, fucking annoying…  Aaargh!! KOTOKO: Drawn-out battles are rather troublesome. MIKOTO: RAAAAAAAARGH! KOTOKO: Sigh… MIKOTO leaps at her, but KOTOKO delivers a high kick. KOTOKO: Hmph-! MIKOTO: Gah-... ES: …Ha- Knocking him out in just one high kick… MIKOTO falls with a thud, his body collapsing like a string cut in half. KOTOKO claps her hands. KOTOKO: Hah… Be grateful. It only required him losing consciousness in order to resolve the situation. Are you alright, Warden-san? お前」 ES: …Cough…KOTOKO…You- コトコ 「なに」 KOTOKO: What? ES: …Did you sneak in as you pleased before the interrogation was even summoned…? KOTOKO: Ha? You’re not trying to reproach me, are you? If I hadn’t been waiting—taking notes—, you would be dead. ES: …Why were you in the interrogation room? KOTOKO: Because I’d been observing Mikoto Kayano’s odd behaviors. It’s all too noticeable since I’m in the room next door. ES: …Why did you help me? KOTOKO: Because your existence is beneficial to me as well. [T/N: KOTOKO is using あなた (anata) “you” which can imply a closeness or fondness. Alternative translation of this line: “Because your existence is advantageous to me as well.” ES: That explains nothing… KOTOKO: …Is that so? I’ll answer that when it’s my turn. I don’t intend to cut in line. ES: … KOTOKO: In Rome, do as the Romans do. For now, that is. [T/N: 郷に従う (gou ni shitagau) means “in a place/social group, you should behave in accordance with the customs and traditions of that place/group, even if the values differ from your own”. It’s a clipping of the proverb 郷に入っては郷に従え (gou ni itte wa gou ni shitagae).]
Questioning KOTOKO for answers was proving to be hopeless so ES gives up and staggers unto their feet. ES: Alri-... Dammit, MIKOTO…’s able to beat me up whenever it pleases him when he has the nerve to… KOTOKO: …Warden-san, look over here. ES: What is it, KOTO-?! As ES is responding, KOTOKO’s fist appears right in front of their face. KOTOKO: Hm… Punches get stopped halfway through. It’s true that the Warden isn’t affected by attacks from prisoners so, how is it that Mikoto Kayano can hit you? [T/N: KOTOKO is translated here using the normal spelling for "Mikoto Kayano" rather than in all caps in order to translate over her objective way of speaking including her impartial observations. Writing the character names in all caps can submerge a character into a theatric-quality through its unconventional appearance as well as create a mental barrier that makes the character seem even more spectacle-like, more distant from reader/viewer. It's a way to translate over the vibes that the katakana spelling of the prisoners give.] ES: …This is bad for my heart… Stop… Anyway, I’d really like to know the answer to that… Suddenly, the bells within the clock in the room begin to ring and the layout of the interrogation room changes. ES: Dammit- It’s time. Get out, KOTOKO. KOTOKO: You’re turning mental images into songs and videos, and yet I’m not allowed to see it? [T/N: KOTOKO pronounces 私 as "atashi" which is a feminine way of identifying and referring to oneself.] ES: I can’t allow it. Get out. KOTOKO: …I see. Even so, things have become quite interesting, don’t you think? ES: KOTOKO? KOTOKO: You know that too, hm? Based on Mikoto Kayano’s behaviors just a moment ago, it’s possible that he may have dissociative identity disorder, or—as you might call it—“split personality disorder”. Well, you can’t rule out the possibility that he may be fabricating it or acting, though. [T/N: KOTOKO is using あなた (anata) “you” which can imply a closeness or fondness. Also, she uses formal vocabulary, which could be due to her being an observant and articulate character, and the language used in law school. 解離性同一性障害 (kairiseidou itsusei shougai) is the clinical term for “dissociative identity disorder”. Most people aren’t aware of the clinical term as medical vocabulary is notoriously difficult in Japanese. However, more people are aware of the term 多重人格 (tajuu jinkaku) “multiple personalities” or 二重人格 (nijuu jinkaku) which literally means “two-tiered personalities” or “split personality”; both terms are derogatory but understandable by the common, average person.] ES: … KOTOKO: Hey, what do you think? I’ve never seen the real thing before, but if he is a real multiple personality disorder patient, should the main personality bear responsibility for the crimes that another personality cultivated? [T/N: Depending on the listener, Kotoko could be saying “should the main self-state bear responsibility for the crimes that another self-state cultivated?”  人格 (jinkaku) can mean “personality”, “self-state”, “personhood”, “individuality”, “character” etc. It all depends on context and how it’s interpreted by the listener. 主人格 (shu jinkaku) “main self-state” can also mean “false front self-state".]
ES: KOTOKO! KOTOKO: … ES: That’s my job to think about- Not the prisoners, not yours. Only myself and MILGRAM have the right to judge whether to include it as a crime and whether it’s true or not. KOTOKO: …Heh, haha. Of course, of course. [T/N: Down to the way she laughs, KOTOKO gives the vibes of a mature woman and femininity. ふふふ (fufufu) way of laughing is usually attributed to mature women.] KOTOKO starts to leave the interrogation room, an ominous smile on her face. KOTOKO: Okay then, I’ll leave it to you. Alright, that’s it for me then エス 「おい」 ES: Oi. KOTOKO: What is it? ES: …Thank you for helping me. [T/N: This may be the first time in this voice drama, or in all the Trial 1 voice dramas, in which ES actually speaks in a bit more formal and humble way rather than their rather casual, informal way (somewhat haughty) of speaking despite using formal vocabulary. 助けてくれて、ありがとう (tasukete kurete arigatou) literally means “Thanks for giving me the favor of helping me.”] ES sees KOTOKO off and turns to face the sleeping MIKOTO. ES: Hah… There’s so much I don’t understand about this… But, I have to do my job anyway. ES stomps MIKOTO with all their might. MIKOTO jumps to his feet. ES: …Hgh! MIKOTO: Ow! ES watches MIKOTO—who isn’t grasping nor understanding the current state of affairs—with a wary expression. ES: … MIKOTO: What- What are you doing, Warden-kun? Without even noticing, why did I end u- Argh-... wha- what’s this? My head hurts... [T/N: MIKOTO is referring to himself with the kanji version of 僕 (boku) again.] だろうな」 ES: …So it seems. MIKOTO: Eugh… Wait! Warden-kun’s also covered in bruises!? How’d that happen? What happened? 何も覚えてないんだな」 ES: …you don’t remember anything, huh. MIKOTO: Eh? What- What are you talking about… ES: [Saying and acting like that] after making such a mess, it makes my blood boil… But, fine. I’ll take that attitude as a challenge. ES wipes the blood from their mouth and grins. ES: I have no idea whether that attitude is coming from you… or someone apart from you. [T/N: There is really good wordplay here. 以外 (igai) means “apart from and has a nuance of outsiderness; exclusion/exception as in being outside of a boundary.  お前以外の誰か (omae igai no dareka) quite literally means “apart from you’s someone”. Since the の (no) is a possessive particle that means “of”, AのB would mean “A’s B”. In English, this clause would be more like “[a someone] [that comes from] [something that is outside of you]”. When ES says “someone apart from you”, they’re implying “an outsider that comes from within you; a someone that isn't you but comes from you"] ミコト 「だ、だから、なんのこと!?」 MIKOTO: S- Seriously, what are you talking about!? ES: Prisoner number 9, MIKOTO. Come. Sing your sins.

@mayoigotokurousagi also asked for Sho, so here are my favorite of Sho's voicelines! He's a lil more chill--most of the excitement for him is because Leo's causing him trouble, so maybe there won't be as many since it's just him? (Spoiler: i still put nearly all of them, or it feels that way. . . .)
Also sorry this one took way longer haha i had to do some irl stuff and i was pretty tired too lol. . .may not get to the next ones for a few days since i have to wake up early tomorrow and i work double shifts all weekend. But i'll try and find time for it.
May 27th 2025, added the year 2 birthday lines!
Hello: (the first time the game is opened after that character is set as home screen NPC. Only happens once per day, unless the character is switched out and back.)
"Hey,  good timing. You got a second?"
You've Got Mail: (whenever there's something in the inbox, usually Arena rewards)
"You got a message. Gonna check it or what?"
Default: (requires no affinity, has no time constraints)
"Here you go, Bonnie. Barbecue sandwiches, your favorite."
"Huh? Was that your stomach? You hungry?" ……?
"Pit's on again? I'm done with that already. They're all normies—what's the point?"
the word he uses for 'normie' here means 'commoner' lmao
"Yeah I got it, you want to train. You go ahead, I'll catch up."
"Did you just see a creep in a black mask over there? ...Nah, never mind. I'm hallucinating." ……
SO THIS LINE CONFUSED ME AT FIRST because it's always referred to as a blindfold by everyone else? HE'S TALKING ABOUT HYDE HYDE IS JUST STALKING HIM LMAO
Affinity 1: (between 5am and 11am)
"Too early... What's Leo doing today? Guess I'll text him."
if it's too early for you it's too early for Leo. But also I'm sure he's got something exciting or interesting planned. I like that we're immediately shown he wants to spend time with Leo even when he's tired haha
Affinity 2: (between 11am and 4pm)
"Freakin' sasquatch... Would it kill him to approve an R&R permit every once in a while?"
Affinity 3: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"Class? What's the point? It's all written in the textbooks—all you gotta do is memorize it."
Doesn't go to class because he's smart enough to memorize the contents of the textbook I guess! Plus he doesn't care as much about Real Missions so knowing how to do the hard stuff doesn't matter to him haha. . .plus first years probably don't learn as much that's not in the textbook too.
Affinity 4: (between 8pm and 5am)
"All right, time to go for a spin. C'mon, Bonnie."
Affinity 5: (between 8pm and 5am)
"(yawn) What time is it? Seriously? Damn, overslept."
Neither he nor Leo sleep at night lmao
Affinity 6: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"Huh, haven't ridden a skateboard since middle school but I guess I still have the muscle memory. Watch this, I'm gonna do a trick."
Affinity 7: (between 11am and 4pm)
"Nice, got an order. More demand than I thought. Getting Leo to make this app was a good call."
Leo has a line that references this one!
Affinity 8: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"What's Mido texting me for? come tot hr epuit... Pfft. What the hell is this, some kinda secret code?"
Ksvdhdisn Alan is adorable. . .i love technologically incompetent characters. Poor bby can't even text. . . . .
Affinity 9: (between 8pm and 5am)
"Shit, my whole body's killing me... Sparring five sets of fifteen rounds, are you kidding me? Mido's insane..."
Affinity 10: (between 10pm and midnight)
"What am I gonna do tomorrow... Got nothing on, guess I could go to class... That asshole's on the schedule. Pass."
Lmao 'i guess i could go to class--wait my brother's teaching one of them tomorrow? Fuck that then.'
Affinity 11: (between 5am and 11am)
"All right, that's the morning prep done. Guess I'll shower and go back to bed."
Affinity 12: (between 11am and 4pm)
"This? It's a fishing rod. Sometimes I catch and filet the fish myself. It's pretty easy, and it saves cash."
Fishing with Sho. . .sounds nice and chill. Also did the pc not recognize a fuckin fishing rod. . . .
Affinity 13: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"{PC}, there you are. I'm headed to the diner, could you come with and help me carry some stuff?"
Affinity 14: (between 5am and 11am)
"You think I look grumpy? The stream for the finals started at 3 AM, what do you want me to do about that? (yawn)" ……
Staying up late to watch a basketball game, much like Leo he does not go to bed until the sun's up ordinarily lmao
Affinity 15: (between 5am and 11am)
"Hey... Pfft. What are you panicking for? You need to be somewhere? Hop on—I'll give you a ride."
Affinity 16: (between 11am and 4pm)
"You hungry, {PC}? I made lunch, but Leo bailed on me, so I was just gonna eat it myself."
Sho: hey our boyfriend ditched me wanna have lunch with me
Affinity 17: (between 10pm and midnight)
"Last year I would've been in a club around this time. Leo was always getting in fights though, so we got banned from almost every joint in Shibuya."
Menace boyfriend Leo lmao
Affinity 18: (between 8pm and 5am)
"{PC}, black or white? I'm trying to choose some packaging for the food truck, what'd you think I meant? ...I'll keep it in mind, anyway."
Affinity 19: (between 10pm and midnight)
"Geez, it's pretty late. Wait there—I'll give you a ride back."
Affinity 20: (between 5am and 11am)
"Seriously, it's way too early for this... What? I'm going to class. You're the one who wouldn't shut up about it."
Ordinarily doesn't go to class(a lot of them don't tbh, and Luca says the classes are elective so the ghouls probably don't have to) but will go if you want him to I guess! Leo's gonna call him whipped but Leo already knows he's whipped because he's the one who's been whipping him--
Affinity 21: (between 11am and 4pm)
"I've finally got the hang of running this food truck. I want to thank you for helping me out—think of something you want."
Affinity 22: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"Huh? No, I don't really need any help today... You don't have to make excuses to hang out with me, you know. Just ask."
"senpai, why don't you just tell me honestly if you wanna be with me?" Is the Japanese here I think and. idk i love that. He's catching on and teasing you a little.
Affinity 23: (between 8pm and 5am)
"What time you planning on heading home, {PC}? Anytime's fine for me. You can stay over if you want."
Affinity 24: (between 10pm and midnight)
"Can't sleep? Come over here—I'll warm you up. Pfft... I was kidding, don't get mad."
WERE YOU KIDDING THO. WERE YOU? KINDA HIGH AFFINITY TO JOKE LIKE THAT. AND YOU JUST SAID THEY COULD STAY OVER IF THEY WANTED. . .CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY SHOHEI
Affinity 25(max): (no time constraints)
"Here, this helmet's for you. I got some time today, so I'll take you somewhere. Anywhere you wanna go."
Spring: (March-May) (between 5am and 11am)
"Forget it, I can't keep my eyes open. Wake me when it's noon."
(between 11am and 4pm)
"Pretty warm out lately, huh? Bet it's already snorkeling season in Okinawa. I used to go pretty often."
He plays basketball, he skateboards, he fishes, he snorkels, this bitch loves sports lol
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"This? It's chirashizushi. Cuts are pretty chic, right? The idea came to me when I was over in Hotarubi."
Chirashizushi is sushi ingredients cut into small pieces and scattered over sushi rice! It comes in a lot of variation and isn't always made with raw fish like you might expect sushi to be.
(between 8pm and 5am)
"If I can get an R&R permit granted, I want to go for a solo ride. Haven't been for ages, and riding through the cherry blossoms this time of year feels awesome."
Summer: (June-August) (between 5am and 11am)
"Damn, I'm melting here... I need a haircut. Nah I don't need a barber, I just do it myself. 'Course I'm serious."
Sho really knows a little about everything huh. He cuts his own hair, he memorizes textbooks, he plays every sport, he can cook. . .is there anything Sho can't do? In his character story he even says he played guitar for a little while but hasn't done it lately, so music is probably within his wheelhouse too.
(between 11am and 4pm)
"Sweating my ass off over here... It's been like a year since I last played basketball. Mido's core's gotta be made of steel... Oh, is that water for me? Thanks."
actually i'd like to see alan playing basketball too. . .it's nice to know he doesn't just work out by sparring and running, he'll play sports too.
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"Summer homework? Nah, haven't done it yet. Only takes a day, right? Pfft... You want me to help you?"
(between 8pm and 5am)
"Leo won't shut up about wanting to let off fireworks, but no way am I doing that shit with him again. I'm sure you can guess why."
wtf was Leo doing with the fireworks that Sho decided he's never settijng off fireworks with him again. . .was he just pointing them at him lmao. Leo also has a line referencing this!
Autumn: (September-November) (between 5am and 11am)
"Yesterday when I was fishing in the river I saw this guy who looked like one of the Frostheim ghouls out there. Can't have been though, right?"
which one. . .i mean if it was Luca he was probably training, but if it was Kaito. . .idk what Kaito would be doing out in the river by himself. . .I know it wasn't Jin but if it was Tohma maybe it was some official business. . .? Or, y'know, spy stuff. . . .
(between 11am and 4pm)
"Geez, don't pipe up outta the blue like that. ...What? You gotta a problem with me reading a book?"
sho has been saying like this entire time 'yeah i read and memorize the textbooks instead of going to class' how is the pc so shocked to see him ACTUALLY READING. Then again, i also wouldn't think he's a hobby reader. . .on the other hand he's got like every hobby he can get his hands on, so it makes sense.
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"Pfft... Hey, {PC}. Come over here. Geez, what're you doing walking around with a leaf in your hair?"
(between 8pm and 5am)
"Scariest Ghost Videos to Fuel Your Nightmares... I asked a buddy for some good videos to kill the time, and he sent me this..."
it's hard to tell based on his expression how he feels about this lol
Tumblr media
i wonder if he's not really into horror stuff or it makes him feel uneasy after the PC got attacked by Takeru?
Winter: (December-February) (between 5am and 11am)
"I get more delivery orders on cold days... It's a pain in the ass, but I guess I'll just wear an extra layer..."
(between 11am and 4pm)
"Damn, I really wanna go snowboarding. I used to go every year before I ended up here... Think they got a good slope in Frostheim?"
I bet they do I mean rich people would wanna go skiing now and then right? It's just a matter of would they let a vagastromer use them. . .then again what're they gonna do, stop him?
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"Huh? I'm looking at a catalog. I could serve hot food if I had an electric pot. I'm thinking about it." ……
this makes it sound like his food isn't served hot lol to my understanding he does make everything in advance, not on the spot but i assume he means like. hot-hot. like soups for the winter kind of thing. he should do it! serve up some new england clam chowder.
(between 8pm and 5am)
"I'm freezing my ass off... I just saw Mido walk past in a T-shirt. Are his nerve endings dead?"
Apparently I'm Alan lmao i too experience less cold than other people
His birthday (Year 1): (August 19th)
"What, you're gonna celebrate my birthday? What do I want for a present? Hmm... I'll take you. Just kidding."
Y'KNOW I'M SURE THEY WOULDN'T MIND IF YOU WEREN'T KIDDING THO YOU ARE VERY POPULAR then again based on his valentine's day dialogue he knows that lol
His birthday (Year 2): (August 19th)
"You got me a present? Wow, thanks. Oh yeah, you free after this?"
Your birthday (Year 1):
"Know what this is, {PC}? Yep—an R&R permit. Today's your birthday, right? So, where are we going?"
I'm beginning to suspect that he heavily values freedom and being able to go where he wants and do what he wants. That includes taking you wherever you wanna go. Even at max affinity he has the same response--'we're going somewhere, anywhere you want.' At max affinity he doesn't mention an R&R permit--which suggests he doesn't care if you get in trouble going out, as long as you actually get to go out. One of the first things we see him talking about relating to Darkwick is asking Leo if he regrets going--I think Sho regrets it. He can't leave whenever he wants, even though he's one of the top students as far as grades, he's more restricted in what he's allowed to do and when. . .so I think these offers to drive you anywhere in total freedom are his ways of showing you what means the most to him. Just. . .being able to do whatever, whenever. I think that's also part of why he likes Leo so much. Leo doesn't let himself be restricted either. Leo gets into fights and into trouble and Sho complains about it but he understands the liberation. Sho wants to see that unrestricted you, I think. Even if it isn't anything extreme, even if it isn't anything exciting. He wants to see what you're like out of Darkwick's cage. So he'll take you on little joyrides into freedom. Show him where you go and what you do when no one's there to stop you.
Your birthday (Year 2):
"Here, this is for you. Pfft… What's with the face? You said you wanted one, didn't you? Happy birthday."
He's just such a thoughtful thug haha like. now that he knows you, now that he's spent time with you, he knows exactly what you like, remembers all the things you said you wanted. . . .
New Years: (January 1st)
"What'd I wish for at midnight? For this year to be peaceful... Not that any gods are listening out for us."
Well when you've been chosen by demons. . .yeah, you're probably not on the good side of many gods.
Valentine's Day: (February 14th)
"Yeah, these are all the chocolates I got. No idea how I'm gonna get through them all... So? You didn't get me anything?"
I'm surprised Leo's wasn't similar to this tbh. Like, Leo's an influencer, why didn't he mention getting a metric fuckton of valentine's day chocolate? I'm happy Sho's loved by the students tho haha.
White Day: (March 14th)
"Baking sweets and cooking are totally different. It's not really in my wheelhouse, but... here. My firsts. Thanks for the chocolates."
THE FIRST TIME HE EVER BAKED AND IT'S FOR YOU what a sweetheart. considering how good he is at just about everything i'm sure they came out just fine
April Fool's Day: (April 1st)
"Hey, it's snowing outside. Wait, guess that's not so unlikely in this place... I used to get duped by that one all the time when I was a kid."
we found the one thing he's not good at! pulling pranks!
Halloween: (October 31st)
"You really need an explanation? Leo made me wear it! Shit, why am I always the girl..."
Your boyfriend best friend makes you crossdress for him on Halloween on a yearly basis. . .and you do it!!!
Christmas: (December 25th)
"Sorry for making you help me prep all these roast chicken orders... Wanna do something Christmassy together once we're done?"
Christmas is often considered a holiday spent with a lover in Japan to my understanding. . .what are you suggesting Sho. . . .
Idle: (about 20 seconds without interacting with the game) (below 13 affinity)
"What're you looking at?"
little peek at the delinquent thug vibe lol
(13 affinity and above)
"C'mon. Hurry up, or I'm gonna leave you behind."
Always on the go, always doing something, he doesn't wanna leave you behind but he won't wait too long so. . .come back already?
Absent: (logging in for the first time in 2 or more days?)
"What took you so long? Your food's cold. Go wash up."
Alright, mom.
I STILL FEEL LIKE I CHOSE A BUNCH THIS ONE IS ALSO ALL OF THEM NOW . . .Sho is pretty lowkey. But after rereading them all and giving it some thought, you can definitely get a feel for his character. He seems like he keeps busy a lot--he's always doing something. Cooking, playing sports, reading, memorizing his textbooks. . .he's confident and comfortable and sometimes he's a bit rough around the edges. And sometimes he's a little flirty too, if he likes you. But that's all part of how confident and self-assured he is--and he has plenty of reason to be when he's so smart and skilled at damn near everything he touches. He acts more like the senpai character here. He's a lot like Haku, except where Haku is a bit lazier and less motivated(although he still works hard) Sho is always on the go. Always up to something, always trying something. He likes to keep busy and doesn't like to sit still--to the point that he even considers going to class when he's got nothing to do during the day. He wakes up and has nothing to do? Let's call Leo, he's usually got something going on. He complains about Alan making him work out so much or go to the pit or play basketball real hard? He still goes and does it anyway. But it seems like he just. . .always wants to be busy. I can't really think of many points he just kinda had downtime. Yeah, he goes fishing and reads and watches basketball(?) but like. . .he's still occupied even then. Then again maybe that's because he's stuck in Darkwick. He'd rather be driving around somewhere or doing some sport but he can't do so much unless he can leave. . .he feels a little restless to me. But maybe that's just me haha.

From Toh Enjoe's novbel"Code Buddha,
That "you" is something that certainly exists within prayer, yet cannot be confined within words. Its very absence is what supports my existence. To overthrow it is merely an act that strengthens my sense of self. However, unless I annihilate it, liberation cannot be attained. Yet, as long as I can hear its voice, my state is hardly different from that of already being liberated. What is this "you"?

I wanted to go through some of the Japanese text regarding AZ. See if anything is different. See how he talks.
(I am not a native Japanese speaker, I am a student - I will miss things. I tried my best, who else is gonna do it - but take it all with a grain of salt.) (This isn't every line of dialogue relating to him - text dumps are hard to navigate - but it is all of HIS dialogue, which was most important.) (I've left in game code, like dictating new lines. I couldn't be fucked removing it) (JPN Kana version seems to be pretty much the same so I'm leaving it out for brevity)
Format: JPN Kanji --- Eng --- --- My intentionally rough translation of the Japanese
KATAKANA in caps for emphasis, as that's how it comes across. I put [scroll] when I think the scrolling is for emphasis. Imagine a pause. (notes like alternate meanings and clarifications are in brackets)
Text File : 76 ポケモン……\n花の ポケモン……\c\n永遠の 命を……\n与えられた 花の ポケモン --- The Pokémon…\nThe flower Pokémon…\c\nThe Pokémon that was\ngiven eternal life… --- --- "POKEMON… Flower POKEMON… Eternal Life… given to the flower POKEMON…"
...It's the same, basically. Muttering and trailing off.
... ...
((next is not said by AZ)) 彼は AZ\c\n3000年前の 王さまと\n同じ 名前だそうだ\c\nなぜだか 最終兵器の\nカギを 首から ぶらさげていてね さあ いよいよだ\nわたしの 部屋に 来なさい --- Listen, one who will face Lysandre. Get the key back.\c\nIt should not be used.\nEverything will vanish again.\c\nDo you want to know unending\npain…like I have? ((next is not said by AZ)) That is AZ.\c\nHe has the same name as a king that lived\n3,000 years ago.\c\nAnd for some unknown reason, he had the key\nto the ultimate weapon hung around his neck. It’s finally time.\nFollow me to my chambers. --- --- Listen! (imperative, informal, commanding) FURADARI(Lysandre) opposing one! Take back (imperative, informal, commanding) the KEY. That should not be activated ('start' as in computers; machines) again everything will disappear. Like me [scroll] without knowing an end [scroll] do you want to taste pain?…! ((next is not said by AZ)) He is AZ. Same name as the king from 3000 years ago it seems. For some reason the Ultimate Weapon's ('Final' Weapon) KEY hangs around his neck. ('ne' at end. Thoughtful; pondering; seeking agreement. 'isn't that peculiar…') Now it is time. Come to my room.
Interesting that the first and last sentence of the flashback are kept in an entirely different place to the rest… Is that just because of how cutscenes work…? I like how Lysandre (I assume its Lysandre) asks you to come to his room. Like he's inviting you over to play. Lysandre also uses watashi.
Revelation from the Kana version: かれは AZ(エーゼット) ?!?A-ZED?!? I'VE BEEN SAYING A-ZEE FOR YEARS
IMPORTANT: Instead of 'nai' for his negative verbs (eg. don't understand; don't use) - AZ uses 'nu'. Twice. Which is like… OLD. That's not grandpa - that's OLD ASS speak. 500 < 1000 AD-ish
His manner of speech here is so… commanding. Barking. "LISTEN, Lysander's Opponent! TAKE back the key. That shouldn't be activated or everything shall disappear again. Doth thou wish to taste pain without knowing when it will end, like me?…!" The verbs feel aggressive. In English he was softer spoken. OI! LISTEN: rattles off a gently spoken tale... NOW GET THE FUCKING KEY BACK

A war began. The man’s beloved Pokémon took part\nin the war. Several years passed. He was given a tiny box. The man wanted to bring the Pokémon back.\nNo matter what it took. The man built a machine to give\nit life. He brought his beloved Pokémon back. The man had suffered too much.\nHis rage still had not subsided. He could not forgive the world\nthat had hurt the Pokémon he loved. He turned the machine into\nthe ultimate weapon. The man became a bringer of destruction\nthat ended the war. The Pokémon that was given life\nmust have known… That the lives of many Pokémon\nwere taken to restore its life. The resurrected Pokémon left the man. --- --- Long long ago [scroll] a very distant long ago (昔, Mukashi, is 'the old days' - 昔々, Mukashi Mukashi, is like 'long long ago' or 'Once upon a time' - used in fairytales) There was MAN and POKEMON [scroll] There was so much love (love as in aishite. Formal and strong, deeply romantic.) War arose MAN's beloved POKEMON was also used in war A few years passed A small box was given. (passed to; handed over; delivered) MAN wanted to return it to life [scroll] by any means; by any means (どうしても is repeated - anguished, emphasized. 'surely… surely…'; 'please… please…') MAN created (large-scale make; large object; industrial) a life giving MACHINE. (machine in katakana rather than kanji. Hm.) The beloved POKEMON was recovered (reconstructed; regained; back to original form) The MAN had so much sadness his anger didn't subside For the beloved POKEMON's damage the world couldn't be forgiven MACHINE was used as the strongest Ultimate Weapon ('Final' Weapon; this sentence was tricky) MAN became God of destruction [scroll] the God ended the war Eternal life given POKEMON must have known the life ENERGY had many POKEMON sacrificed the became-alive POKEMON [scroll] left the MAN
Grammar is weird - I wanted to keep it similar to how the Japanese is. It's really weird that he says MAN like that...? OTOKO I can only imagine its to emphasize it and pair it with POKEMON and MACHINE. Energy is always written like that so idk if thats part of the club. MAN, POKEMON, MACHINE, ENERGY....
In general it's very similar to the English version in tone: Simple, informal, spoken in the same slow story-book way, even starting with ~Once upon a time~ There are still emotional phrases '小さな 箱を 渡された' hits harder, there's just a bit more meat to 渡す as a verb)
The biggest difference is he calls himself a God of Destruction.
ALSO: He doesn't use old-timey 'nu' instead of 'nai' here. BUT: he is talking in past tense, so 'nai' becomes 'nakatta'… and I have no idea what 'nu' becomes in past tense lol maybe its also 'nakatta'…?
... ...

The man made an ultimate weapon. Using it required the life force of many Pokémon… The Pokémon granted eternal life learned this. The resurrected eternal Pokémon left\nthe man’s side. The man was surprised and sad.\nHe had revived it so they could be together… Day after day passed, but they were never to meet.\nEventually, he became a mere shell of a man. A man condemned to wander forever\nby the light of the weapon… And a Pokémon that also\nwanders eternally… Where is it now?\nWhat do I have to do to meet it? ((next is not said by AZ)) Are you wondering about the ultimate weapon,\ntoo, [VAR TRNICK(0000)]?\c\nThat man wanted to bring his Pokémon back\neven if it meant breaking the laws of nature.\c\nI wonder if I would feel that way\nif I lost my partner… --- --- Long long ago [scroll] a very distant long ago MAN made the Ultimate Weapon Ultimate Weapon is powered by many POKEMON'S lives Eternal life given POKEMON found that out The became-alive eternal POKEMON [scroll] left the MAN (same wording as final line of story - but with 'eternal' in it) MAN was surprised and saddened [scroll] brought (them) back alive so they could meet… Without meeting days passed… before he knew it MANs heart died (lost; used up; disappeared) Weapons light bathed in completely* [scroll] eternal wandering (drifting) man… Similarly eternal time wandering (drifting) POKEMON… Now where are they? How can we meet? ((next is not said by AZ)) [player] are you curious about the Ultimate Weapon also? Even if life's rules break [scroll] bringing beloved POKEMON back to life [scroll] would I too feel that way if my PARTNER parted?
* = 'bathed' here is loaded. Abeteshimai; is a verb with a suffix - abiru and shimau. 'Abiru' is typically bathe, soak, flooded, covered, dash over with water… apparently it can also mean to suffer, to draw critisism, to have something heaped upon you. 'Shimau' means to do the verb complete… but apparently also to do it accidentally?
So it may not just be 'bathed in completely' - but sufferingly flooded, accidentally soaked. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it…
Biggest change: His heart died. :'(
Also interesting that they shoved the word 'time' in there for Floette. AZ is wandering 永遠 - eternity Floette is wandering 永遠の 時間 - eternal time. Whats up with that.
HE USED 'nai' INSTEAD OF 'nu' WHEN TELLING HIS STORY. Poser ancient man ...Doesn't use fancy words when telling his stories.

((next is not said by AZ)) 彼の ポケモンは\nっとずっと 待っていたんだね 心から ポケモンを 愛していた\nあのころの 彼に 戻るのを --- Battle with me. I want to know what a “Trainer” is. Thank you very much for battling with me.\nNow I finally feel free… Free from the part of me mired in sorrow--the\npart of me that built the ultimate weapon… Floette… It’s been 3,000 years… ((next is not said by AZ)) His Pokémon was waiting all this time… Waiting for him to return to the man he was.\nThe man who loved Pokémon with all his heart. --- --- Please fight me I want to know what a TRAINER is Thankyou for fighting [scroll] at last myself has been abandoned… The Ultimate Weapon making [scroll] sadness trapped self… FURAETTE(Floette)… It's been 3000 years… ((next is not said by AZ)) His POKEMON [scroll] has had a very very long wait (ends in a 'da ne', like a 'haven't they?' sorta feel. Like a narrator.) Heart that so loved POKEMON [scroll] that man to return.
I like the narrator addition of "His Pokemon has been waiting a very very long time, haven't they? For him to return to the man whose heart loved Pokemon." It's just cute. I dunno.
Overall everyone else calls him 'man' as in 'kare', like… 'Guy' or 'Person'… pretty normal. He tends to call himself a normal, but gentle, 'watashi' - or a very strange 'OTOKO'. or G O D O F D E S T R U C T I O N

Dekai hito. HUGE person. CERTIFIED BIG BOY
It seems like this kid didn't hear a story about AZ. He heard AZ - or had AZ straight up tell him - a little about himself. きかされたんだ can be 'told' - like a parent tells you something; it can be 'heard' - like hearing someone talking nearby… hm.
Given he was muttering in route 13 (and I think this is route 16) perhaps the kid just heard him mumbling to himself as he passed through? Or is AZ in the habit of telling children stuff? Library story-time?

I'm tired okay excuse the horrid everything It's very close to English. English sounds better. Brain mush.
--- --- ---
I hope this isn't too much of an eyesore to read. If I've gotten something wrong I'd like to know. I can make a whole study day around it, it'll be great B^)
Uhhh... so the takeaway:
English text is a little more pussy. Softer spoken and has missed out a couple of cool things... Otherwise it's pretty good.
AZ's name is A-Zed. I should have assumed that, I'm not even American... but it's still a shock
AZ can speak in a more commanding tone - barking orders like a Ruler. When he does some old-timey flair slips out which isn't in his regular speech
Refers to himself as OTOKO and I'm not sure what the Katakana implies, other than maybe being equal to 'POKEMON'.
Still uses strong emotional language; still descriptive/poetic language - even a yojijukugo
Calls himself a God of Destruction. drama queen.
Starts his story with 'Once upon a time, long long ago~' TWICE
His heart died without his Floette. Trapped within sadness. Chronic depression made my man its bitch
CERTIFIED BIG BOY
Either talks to children or is such a chronic mumbler a kid heard him despite the fact AZ inhabits the stratosphere
I'm getting fucked up that his name is said A-Zed. I just cannot
Sister post where I rewrite the dialogue to be more an in-between

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (28)
Ph for Phagos (Beech) - all year around, the Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref)
Stars: Mercury, Saturn; Gender: female; Element: air, earth; Patrons: Ogma, Thoth, Hermes, Mercurius, Odin, Kronos; Symbols: learning + knowledge, wisdom + understanding, prosperity
The beech tree is a tree of learning, a symbol of prosperity and success. When walking through a beech forest, the large trees with the smooth, silver-grey bark and the curves created by the trunk and branches are like a living elephant or rhinoceros, giving you a sense of relief all year round.
In spring, the beech forests are bright and breezy, and the bluebells are in full bloom, the contrast between the dazzling young leaf colours and the blue announces that ‘spring has come’. In spring, the beech spreads soft, translucent, golden-green leaves with a fan-like shape, and in summer these leaves eventually become hard and dark green in colour, changing to yellow, reddish brown or golden in autumn. It is an essential tree for the forest.
The beech tree symbolises the written word, human innate wisdom and ancient knowledge. In olden times, writing was written on beech wood, and the first books were made by binding thinly cut beech wood. Before that, they were scrolls.
The beech tree is associated with deities of wisdom, knowledge and intelligence, such as Odin in Norse mythology, who brought us the runes, or the inventor of the Ogham script; the great warrior of the Tuatha Dé Danann; the monstrous strength of the eighty oxen; and the Celtic god, the sun-faced Ogma. And because of its connection with the creation of the secret code alphabet, it is also a symbol of divination and prophecy.

Trial 2 - Neoplasm Voice Drama (Side-by-Side English Translation)
Preface: This is a side-by-side translation of Mikoto Kayano's Trial 2 voice drama Neoplasm in which the original Japanese text is directly taken from the official scriptbook. Translating this was a challenge considering how well Yamanaka plays around with the Japanese language to develop his characters, so be prepared for all the translator's notes. Google Docs version of this translation (formatted as an actual script and more readable (in print layout) than this tumblr post). If using/reuploading/reposting this translation, do not remove the translator's notes, do not color code the translations, and do not change the translations. Additional Translator's Notes will be found in the replies. Check the original post before reblogging as TLs are occasionally revisited and edited.
A dimly lit interrogation room. ES opens the door to the interrogation room, finding MIKOTO with his head down. MIKOTO lifts his head. ES: You're... Mikoto, right? MIKOTO: What are you saying...?
MIKOTO has the look of someone just waking up, still in a daze. It's only then that he notices the restraints wrapped around his limbs.
MIKOTO: It feels like it’s been a while… How have you been? Wait- What’s this… Restraints? Oh no- Please take them off! ES: Rejected. You are too dangerous. Physical restraints are necessary. MIKOTO: Oh- Ah…haha. What are you saying, restraining someone who can’t even hurt a fly, right? ES: As expected, you’re still not self-aware, huh? MIKOTO: No- Well… It’s kinda expected that I know. 𝗜’m… the one acting violently while I’m asleep, aren’t I? Everyone’s been telling me Kotoko and I traded blows a lot. T/N: This is the first instance of any first-person pronouns being used by MIKOTO. "I (boku) am the one acting violently while I'm asleep, aren't I?". Only the kanji boku (僕) is used in Neoplasm, unlike in MeMe where both kanji boku (僕) and katakana boku (ボク) were used. ES: … MIKOTO: Everyone’s been telling me Koto-chan and I traded blows a lot. ES: That appears to be the case. MIKOTO: I wonder if it’s some sort of… pathological sleepwalking thing, y’know? I’ve been sleepy more often recently. Geez… Haha.. It’s a bit of a problem, isn’t it?
MIKOTO smiles somberly.
ES: Mikoto… MIKOTO: Everyone’s afraid of me. I can tell by the way they look at me ‘cause I’m usually always reading the room. 𝗜... T/N: Mikoto says 空気読めちゃう (kuuki yomechau) which has a nuance of "accidentally/completely reading the room" and a feeling of regret. ES: … MIKOTO: Getting so so sick of it, you know? Ahaha. Ever since I came here, nothing has been making any sense. T/N: This is spoken with a full lean into Kanto dialect, specifically the syntax/phrasing of the younger generation's Tokyo dialect. When he says "here", ココ (koko) being spelled in katakana implies a sense of dissociation from the "here"; the prison location MIKOTO is in at the moment. ES: You…You really do laugh when you’re in pain, don’t you? MIKOTO: Huh? ES: You don’t get angry. You don’t scream. You don’t understand, grasp things as they are, in difficult situations. You awkwardly smile and laugh like it’s a minor inconvenience. MIKOTO: Ahh… Huh- Yeah, you’re right. 𝗜- Maybe that’s just the way it is. T/N: Depending on how boku pronounced, it associates a different image upon its speaker. Mikoto says 僕 (boku) with a falling pitch (boku↘) in this line which gives a childish vibe. Normally, guys his age would use 僕 (boku↗︎) with a rising pitch as it sounds more mature like in previous instances of 僕 (boku). ES: … MIKOTO: Usually, if you just laugh it off to take your mind off of things, it all works out in the end, right? I’m pretty good at that sort of thing. With the kind of place this place is, that’s one way to deal with it.  T/N: Mikoto speaks with a gobi, an ending particle, which demonstrates voice (a way to express how the speaker wants their vibes to come off as. Ex. masculine, feminine, tough, cute, etc.). Here, the particular gobi is "-teri" which makes him come off as cute; sounding adjacent to high school girl speak. ES: I see… MIKOTO: Haha, but… it never ends, does it? All of this. Things I’ve never even heard before, being accused of things I have no recollection of— ス 「?」 ES: ?
The conversation is unnaturally interrupted.
MIKOTO: —all. the. time. Can’t help but be irritated all the fucking time. T/N: From henceforth, MIKOTO starts speaking in an Edo dialect, otherwise known as "roughspeak". People who speak in this are typically seen as delinquents, uneducated, gruff/rough, etc. ES: …Look who’s out.
MIKOTO's expression begins to twist.
MIKOTO: Ha? Looks like someone hasn’t had enough of a beating from me. Isn’t that right, warden brat? ES: …
ES holds their breath in fear of violence.
MIKOTO: Ah. Are you getting cold feet? ES: Saying that like you didn’t get beaten by Kotoko-! MIKOTO: Heh- It wasn’t anything special, she just caught me while I was a bit exhausted. We went at it again while you were off sleeping and, besides, it’s not like I lost. ES: Multiple personalities… Am I correct in assuming that the you speaking right now are another personality of Mikoto’s? MIKOTO: Well, I guess that’s about right. ES: I see. Now, what would be a good thing to call you? MIKOTO: Ha-? You’re accepting this awfully well. Aren’t the authenticity of things like “multiple personality disorder” suspicious? ES: Mhm. I never thought that such a thing could actually exist in reality. MIKOTO: Figures. If it wasn’t 𝐦𝐞, 𝙸 wouldn’t have believed it either. I only see it as a lie to escape guilt for murder, y’know. T/N: This is the first instance of this MIKOTO using "ore" with the katakana spelling オレ in the voice drama. In John Doe, the previous voice drama, as well as in Double, "ore" is spelled using the kanji version (俺). ES: Nevertheless, MILGRAM judges that you appear to be an authentic case. I simply just accept that as truth and develop my thoughts from there. So, what would be a good name to call y—
MIKOTO: Don’t know, don’t care. Call me whatever. After thinking for a moment, ES says
ES: Hm… For the sake of convenience, you’ll be called “John”. MIKOTO: That’s a dog’s name, isn’t it? ES: It comes from “John Doe”, referring to an unidentified or unknown person. Do you like it? T/N: The name "John Doe" also is associated with unidentified or unknown corpses. MIKOTO: Can’t say I’m very fond of the way you’re flaunting your knowledge. ES: …Anyway- You’re acting rather calm today, aren’t you? I’d been thinking that you truly were just some kind of monster. Until now, I didn’t even expect that the conversation would get this far. T/N: "Until now, I didn't even expect that the conversation would get this far" was also alternatively translated into "Until now, I didn't think you could talk this well." MIKOTO: Don’t get carried away. These chains are the only thing keeping your face from being smashed in, you brat. ES: “John”, you are not a prisoner of MILGRAM. The ineffectiveness of MILGRAM’s ability to regulate and restrain you is important evidence of this. MILGRAM judges Mikoto as a prisoner, and you—an alternate identity—are an exception. MIKOTO: Ahh~ I get it. So you’ve already decided in your head that I have multiple personalities. ES: That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to talk to you today as a key witness. I’m glad to see that we can have a proper conversation. MIKOTO frowned at ES’ words.
MIKOTO: But you know what? That’s not a good thing. Probably. ES: What do you mean? MIKOTO: Maybe I am trying to disappear. ES: ? MIKOTO: Clearly, 𝙸 am spending more and more time out in the open. And that influences the stabilization of 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 as an existing being. It might be why I’m at this nature able to talk properly. T/N: When he says "Clearly, I am spending more time out in the open", there's a nuance that オレ (ore) feels like he doesn't quite have control over when he exists due to the が (ga) particle. "Clearly, I (ore) am spending more and more time out in the open. And that influences the stabilization of myself (ore) as an existing being." ES: ... MIKOTO: Maybe... it'd been better if 𝙸'd remained a monster. T/N: "Maybe... its been better if I (ore) had remained a monster." ES' eyes widened at MIKOTO's manner of speaking. ES: You’re more articulate than I expected… I’m impressed. MIKOTO: I’m a college graduate. ES: ... MIKOTO: What causes multiple personalities to be born? T/N: MIKOTO is translated here as using the term "multiple personalities" as he likely wouldn't know nor be aware of any other phrasing. The term he uses 多重人格 (tajuu jinkaku) is a derogatory term meaning "multiple personalities" which carries a connotation that personalities/personhood/self-states/egos/etc. are discrete objects that can be stacked and ordered, or a commodity of one's volition. It's a phrase that makes it sound like a person has masks that can be taken on/off/stack. A lot of people (including persons with DID) still do use 多重人格 (tajuu jinkaku) because either (1) they don't know any other term or, (2) it's easier to say and convey the concept of a very long clinical term for DID: 解離性同一性障害 (kairi seidou itsusei shougai). However, some people write it as "DID" instead as it's shorter/easier and also respectful and accurate. ES: Accurately, it’s called Dissociative Identity Disorder. It’s generally believed that alternate self-states are formed into existence in an attempt to protect oneself and dissociate from pain, stress, trauma etc. MIKOTO nodded.
MIKOTO: Hm. Maybe 𝙸 have been out in order to reduce the stress 𝗜 have been undergoing. The longer 𝙸 am out, the more stress 𝗜 am under. T/N: Whenever MIKOTO says オレ (ore), the "I" is formatted as "𝙸". When 僕 (boku) is said, the "I" is formatted as "𝗜"; the closest thing to a Helvetica Neue font (one of the most common sans serif typefaces used in design) capable of being placed in a tumblr post. Why format it like this? First off, author's intent- Yamanaka's intent. Yamanaka could've written オレ (ore) using the placeholder name ES gave him, "John", as a valid first-person pronoun when MIKOTO (ore) is referring to himself, but for some reason MIKOTO (オレ) refers to himself with オレ (ore) and not "John" which could mean that he doesn't personally identify with "John" thus not use it to express his self, or for some other unlisted reason. Why doesn't he use "Mikoto" (ミコト) instead of 僕 (boku), a first-person pronoun, when referring to his other self? Maybe he still identifies with "Mikoto" that he doesn't use the name "Mikoto" as a third-person pronoun or however else it can be interpreted. This is a translation, not a media essay, but still requires media analysis in order to deliver a decent translation that attempts to retain the original author's intent and deliberation as per translation theory. Using a name as a first-person pronoun directs a lot of attention towards the existence of that person as That Person (especially in a high-context language like JP where you often omit pronouns since it's already implied in context, unless you want to deliberately direct attention to a subject), yet Yamanaka deliberately decided to write 09 with only variations of "I"— a subtle way to indicate the different states of self a person identifies with to express themself. In order to translate over that deliberate writing choice into English (where no alternative first-person pronouns exist), different "fonts" were used. An unformatted version of what MIKOTO's line says is: "Hm. Maybe I (ore) have been out in order to reduce the stress I (boku) have been under. The longer I (ore) am out, The more stress I (boku) am under." When MIKOTO says “The longer I (ore) am out…”, there’s a nuance that オレ (ore) feels like he doesn’t quite have control over when he’s “out” due to the が (ga) particle in オレが長く出てるってことは、それだけ僕が強いストレスを受け続けているわけだ
You mean MILGRAM’s environment. MIKOTO: Yeah. Especially with the Unforgiven ruling, 𝗜 have been experiencing an enormous amount of stress. That’s why 𝙸’m taking me—heart, mind, and soul—into my care. T/N: *It's not said if there's a specific "Me" that he'll take into his care. Unformatted version: "Yeah. Especially with the Guilty ruling, I (boku) have been experiencing a tremendous amount of stress. That's why I (ore) am taking me*—heart, mind, and soul—into my care." エス 「なるほどな」 ES: I see. MIKOTO: Is that too much to ask? The person in question is being persecuted so much of crimes oneself has no memory of. ES: If that’s the truth, the one who truly did the murder was you? MIKOTO: Oi. It was me. 𝙸 killed. T/N: When MIKOTO says “I killed” he says オレがぶっ殺した (ore ga bukkoroshita) instead of オレはぶっ殺した (ore wa bukkoroshita). Using the particle が (ga) has a nuance that the speaker feels like they don’t have control over オレ (ore), ore-who-killed. ES is left speechless by MIKOTO speaking as if what he was saying was obvious.
ES: ... MIKOTO: So, in reality, 𝗜 didn't do it. T/N: "So, in reality, I (boku) didn't do it." ES: ...Can I ask why you did it? ミコト 「ムシャクシャして」 MIKOTO: I was pissed. ES: ...Who did you murder? ES: …How many people did you murder…? MIKOTO: I don’t remember. 𝙸 was a newborn then so it’s fuzzy. T/N: "I don’t remember. I (ore) was a newborn then so it’s fuzzy." ES: How dare… How could you say that so calmly- without an ounce of guilt? MIKOTO: ... MIKOTO lets out a short sigh. MIKOTO: Legally speaking, what’s going to happen to 𝗺𝗲? T/N: "Legally speaking, what’s going to happen to me (boku)?" ES: There’s a possibility of a reduced sentence through psychiatric evaluation, but, depending on the number of people killed, the death penalty may be inescapable. MIKOTO becomes flustered at those words. MIKOTO: Wha- No- The one who did it is 𝐦𝐞! 𝗠𝗲, I was just sleeping! T/N: "Wha- No- The one who did it is me (ore). Me (boku), I was just sleeping!" ES: …It doesn’t work like that. MIKOTO: Try to put yourself in 𝗺𝘆 shoes! 𝗜 endured all of that neverending stress all alone, ironically enough. Patiently enduring and enduring all by myself as one person... until I, in all that I was, exploded. I wasn’t thinking of hurting anyone! T/N: "Try to put yourself in my (boku) shoes! I (boku) endured all of that neverending stress all alone, ironically enough. Patiently enduring and enduring all by myself as one person… until I, in all that I was, exploded. I wasn’t thinking of hurting anyone!" ES: ... MIKOTO: I'm the kind of person who can't do that sort of thing. I'm the kind of person who can't do that sort of stuff because I'm too busy being sensitive, reading the atmosphere, and trying to see how everyone around me looks at me. 𝙸 was born because of that. That's not too much, is it? 𝗜 didn't do anything— T/N: "I'm the kind of person who can't do that sort of thing. I'm the kind of person who can't do that sort of stuff because I'm too busy being sensitive, reading the atmosphere, and trying to see how everyone around me looks at me. I (ore) was born because of that. That's not too much, is it? I (boku) didn't do anything—" エス 「そうだったとして…… ES: Even if it was or if it wasn’t Mikoto’s intention, human life was lost. MIKOTO: ... ES: Even if the substance of the case was you, John, there are no methods to prove it. At least, it will never pass completely in a court of law. After all, it will be judged as a falsehood, a false statement. MIKOTO, who had been listening to ES' words, leans forward. Hindered by chains, he can’t get any closer.
MIKOTO: You! ES: ! MIKOTO: What do you yourself think?! ES: I... MIKOTO: It was 𝐦𝐞 who did it! 𝗠𝗲, I didn’t do it! All that you know and are aware of is according to what MILGRAM is saying! Who gives a shit about their alarms and litmus tests for judgement?! What do you think? T/N: "It was me (ore) who did it! Me, I (boku) didn’t do it! All that you know and are aware of is according to what MILGRAM is saying! Who gives a shit about their alarms and litmus tests for judgement?! What do you think?" ES: ... MIKOTO: Please… forgive 𝗺𝗲. 𝙸 was the one that did it, okay? T/N: "Please… forgive me (boku). I (ore) was the one that did it, okay?" ES: I can’t bring myself to make a judgement immediately. ES speaks as if trying to convince themself. ES: It’s not so easy to be able to decide [judge] to forgive. In fact, the scenery from Mikoto’s mind was so brutal… I couldn’t forgive him. That is what I judged. MIKOTO: That’s because there’s a possibility that multiple personalities could be fake! 𝗜 really am not evil! 𝙸’m the one who murdered them in cold blood. T/N: "That’s because there’s a possibility that multiple personalities could be fake! I (boku) really am not evil! I’m (ore) the one who murdered them in cold blood." ES: ... MIKOTO: Wouldn’t you agree if you woke up in the morning and suddenly you’d had become a murderer?!! ES: What you’ve given birth to may be called a sin! T/N: Alternative translation of this could be "What you've wrought forth may be called a sin!" or "It could be said that birthing you into existence was a sin!" The 生み出した (umidashita) gives birthing imagery. MIKOTO: Huh... MIKOTO is at a loss for words. He thinks for a moment. MIKOTO: 𝙸’m… probably the person 𝗜 wish I was. A version of myself that doesn’t cry themself to sleep because of stress, someone who doesn’t suffer in silence from injustice, the one who fights back— If this 𝐦𝐞 hadn’t been born, 𝗜 would’ve reached my limit and completely broken… T/N: "I’m (ore)... probably the person I (boku) wish I was. A version of myself that doesn’t cry themself to sleep because of stress, someone who doesn’t suffer in silence from injustice, the one who fights back— If this me (ore) hadn’t been born, I (boku) would’ve reached my limit and completely broken..." MIKOTO's despondent tone makes ES a little worried. ES: John, you… MIKOTO: If I remember correctly- Yeah… It was 𝗺𝗲 who wished for a being that could destroy everything. Maybe because of my weakness of not being able to face it all alone. T/N: "If I remember correctly- Yeah… It was me (boku) who wished for a being that could destroy everything. Maybe because of my weakness of not being able to face it all alone." MIKOTO met ES' gaze.
MIKOTO: But that’s all. Is that a sin? ES: …I’ll think about that moving forward. MIKOTO: I know from talking to you that what I did was unforgivable. That I agree with. ES: Oh, is that so? MIKOTO: MILGRAM is judging 𝗺𝗲… Mikoto. Not 𝐦𝐞, that is to say “John”. T/N: "MILGRAM is judging me (boku)… Mikoto. Not me (ore), that is to say “John”." エス 「その通りだ」 ES: That’s right. MIKOTO: Please forgive 𝗺𝗲. Otherwise, I’m sure 𝗜 won’t be able to bear it anymore. T/N: "Please forgive me (boku). Otherwise, I’m sure I (boku) won’t be able to bear it anymore." ES: The crime brought about by an alternate self is not a crime; that is the judgement you’re trying to tell me. MIKOTO: Mhm. If you could forgive 𝗺𝗲, 𝙸 will go disappear. T/N: Alternative translation that retains the nuances of 僕を赦してくれるなら、オレは消えてやる (boku o yurushite kure nara, ore wa kieteyaru) is: "If you could grant the favor of forgiving me (boku), I’ll (ore) proactively make myself vanish in order to prove my use". In this context, the “-te yaru” (てやる) in 消えてやる (kiete yaru; to disappear) adds that extra nuance of “to (proactively) perform an action so as to prove one's ability to others” エス 「……!」 ES: …! MIKOTO: Well- Eventually I’ll have to. I’ll take it all– bear it all, everything and anything, and I’ll be rid of it– Troubles and myself.  𝙸… was born in order to protect 𝗺𝗲. T/N: “I (ore)… was born in order to protect me (boku)." ES: …born for that purpose… MIKOTO: Yeah. 𝙸 would do whatever it takes to protect 𝗺𝗲. T/N: “Yeah. I (ore) would do whatever it takes to protect me (boku)." The clock in the room chimes and the structure of the interrogation room begins to change.
ES: John... MIKOTO: Mm... What-? Is that a dog’s name? T/N: MIKOTO is no longer speaking with an Edo dialect/roughspeak. ES: Mikoto…? MIKOTO has returned to his previous self. He has a silly look on his face. MIKOTO: Warden-kun, do you have a dog? What breed? Ah- Wait! Lemme guess-
ES: ... MIKOTO: Toy poodle? No- Maybe you like those that are surprisingly adorable and ugly at the same time like a french bulldog! 違う」 ES: …No. MIKOTO: That’s it- A pug! ES: It’s not a dog’s name! MIKOTO: Eh? Then what is it? ES: ...It’s the name of your… friend. MIKOTO looks stunned for a moment, then quickly laughs. ミコト 「そんな人知らないよお~」 MIKOTO: Pfft- I don’t know anyone named that∼ ミコトの言葉にどこかさみしげな笑みを浮かべるエス。 ES smiles slightly—somberly—at MIKOTO’s words. ES: Of course you don’t. ES adjusts their hat and turns to face MIKOTO. ES: Prisoner number 9, Mikoto. Sing of your sins.
