미국너구리의 사회적 행동

1990년대 동물생태학자 Stanley Gehart와 Ulf Hohmann의 연구에 따르면 미국너구리는 주로 혼자 있지 않으며 성별에 따른 사회적 행동을 하는 것으로 보인다. 혈연관계가 있는 암컷들은 소위 "fission-fusion society(*)"를 이루고 살아간다. 공용 영역을 공유하고 때때로 먹이를 먹는 장소나 쉬는 장소에서 서로 만난다. 관계가 없는 수컷들은 짝짓기 기간에 낯선 수컷으로부터 자기의 위치를 지키기위해 또는 다른 침입자를 막기위해 느슨한 사회적 무리를 형성한다. 보통 이런 무리는 4마리 이상으로 이루어지지 않는다. * 분열-융합 사회, 필요에 따라 만나고 헤어지는 모임. Studies in the 1990s by the ethologists Stanley D. Gehrt and Ulf Hohmann suggest that raccoons engage in gender-specific social behaviors and are not typically solitary, as was previously thought. Related females often live in a so-called "fission-fusion society", that is, they share a common area and occasionally meet at feeding or resting grounds. Unrelated males often form loose male social groups to maintain their position against foreign males during the mating season—or against other potential invaders.
