“수염�� 있어서 좋은 점과 나쁜 점이 뭐예요?” “겨울에 지퍼 올리면 껴요. 아파요. 좋은 점? 수염 안 나는 남자들이 부러워한다? 그리고 수염이 사람들과의 대화거리를 만들어줘요. ‘그거 본인 수염이에요?’ 했을 때 ‘아니요’하면 ‘어쩐지’하고 끝나요. 근데 ‘네 맞아요’ 하면 질문이 세 개, 네 개는 더 나오거든요. 또 제 모발이랑 수염이 색과 굵기가 달라요. 저는 윗머리 아랫머리라고 하는데, 사람들이 염색한 거 아니냐고 물어봐요. ‘네’라고 하면 ‘거봐, 염색했지?’하고 마는데 ‘염색 안 했어요’ 그러면 말이 더 이어져요. ‘눈썹이랑도 색깔이 다르고, 그게 어쩌고 저쩌고, 어쩌고 저쩌고...’” "What's the good and the bad about having a beard?" Hey guys..so, I know some of you wanted suggestions for listening practice. But, honestly, no one talks like they do in listening practice. No one speaks that clearly or deliberately, so getting used to other people’s accents and speech patterns is important in my opinion. So, I decided to try making a kind of video for you. I narrated a speed drawing of Rap Monster from BTS. I used lots of good expressions for describing appearances. And I spoke at medium speed and focused on the grammar point ㄴ/은/는 편.

If you enjoy this kind of video, please let me know. I’m really nervous about this post. I mean, hearing my own voice back through the video editor is like torture. But if you like it, I’ll make more in the future! If not, I’ll focus on other things!

**핵심 단어(key words)**

도톰한 입술 full lips / 둥근 눈썹 (둥글다) round eyebrows (round)

아치형 눈썹 arch shaped eyebrows / 투블럭 머리 Hair that is short on the sides and longer on the top

금발로 염색한 머리 Hair that is dyed blond / 깨끗한 피부 (여드럼 없는 피부) clear skin/clean skin (skin without acne)

**Grammar 문법**

ㄴ/은/는 편 is not a really difficult grammar point, but it is really important because it's used often. 

편 means side, and it’s seen in both this grammar point and other words. 

Luckily, conjugating this grammar point is easy. For verbs, all you have to do is remove the dictionary 다 and add 는 편 to the stem of the verb. And it’s the same for both stems that end with a vowel and stems that end with a consonant. 

So, let’s look at one that ends with a vowel. 운동하다 - to exercise.

운동하다 —> (remove) 다

운동하 + 는 편 —> 운동하는 편

And let’s look at one that ends with a consonant. 먹다 - to eat.

먹다 —> (remove) 다

먹 + 는 편 —> 먹는 편

Adjectives are slightly different, but just as easy. For stems that end with a vowel, you still need to take about that dictionary 다, and then you add ㄴ 는편.

For example, 날씬하다 - to be thin, skinny

날씬하다 —> (remove) 다

날씬하 + ㄴ 편 —> 날씬한 편

And with a consonant, you need to add 은 편 after removing the dictionary 다.

Fore example, 좋다 - to be good

좋다 —> (remove) 다

좋 —> 좋은 편

Now you’re probably thinking, that’s great. But what does it mean? Well, let’s look at some verbs first. 는 편  means to “tend(s) to.” Since 편 means “side,” it literally means “to lean towards or be on the side of something.”

So, we have:

저는 티비를 많이 보는 편이에요.  I tend to watch a lot of TV.

Which means “I am on the side of watching a lot of TV.” This expression tends to be a bit softer or less direct. Because you could say “I watch a lot of TV.” 저는 티비를 많이 봐요. But, maybe you don’t watch a ton, you just kind of watch a lot. So, 는 편 is great when you want to softly say something, not necessarily make a bold statement. Or it could be used to down play something. Maybe you don’t want to admit you watch too much TV, so say you kind of watch a lot. 

Here are some more examples. 

나는 그림을 잘 못 그리는 편이에요. I’m not really good at drawing.

그 친구는 한국어를 잘 하는 편이에요. That friend is pretty good at speaking Korean.

솔직히 우리 엄마는 요리를 잘 하시는 편은 아니에요. Honestly, our mom isn’t that good at cooking.

verb/adjective ㄴ/은/는 편 can also be used with 아니다 (to not be). So, 는 편은 아니다 or 는 편이 아니다 means to not lean on that side. For example, 저는 잘 운동하는 편은 아니에요. I’m not really good at exercising.

Adjectives can  be understood as “on the X side” or “kind of.” Like with verbs, it’s a softer way of making a statement or downplaying something. So, for example:

나는 키가 작은 편이에요. I’m on the short side./I’m kind of short./I’m a bit short.

It’s a way to say that you aren’t tall (or even in the middle) and you aren’t really short. But, you’re closer to be short than tall (or in the middle). 

Let’s see some more examples:

내 성격이 좀 급한 편이라 기다리는 것을 참을 수 없어. Since I’m kind of impatient, I cannot stand waiting. 

있다 and 없다 are unique because they can act as adjectives, but they will always use 는 편. 

나는 편견이 없는 편이야. I’m not really biased. (I’m on the side of having no bias.)
