I just finished watching the new Season 2 of ‘Kingdom’! I also watched bits and pieces of Season 1 beforehand as a refresher (I already watched it when it released in 2019), so this review will be for both Season 1 and 2. I forgot how much I loved the series! I found myself repeating “Just one more episode,” then watching the second season in one sitting lol. Boiled down, it’s the story of a zombie outbreak within the 1600s-ish time period in Korea’s Joseon period. There’s political conspiracy, a fight for the throne, and a hunt to figure out the origins and powers of the outbreak! I enjoyed my binge watch very much lol.

The storyline was very well-thought-out. I really liked it. The juggling of the uprooting of conspiracies and the zombie outbreak was balanced well too.

Definition of quick-paced! It's filled with action and the plot is always moving forwards, thus it doesn’t get boring to watch!

Korean culture and history! The outfits, appearance, buildings, and even the way they speak and act are very true to history. The palace scenes (at least the outdoor scenes) were filmed on an actual South Korean location. I’ve been to the actual historical sites myself! If you ever go to South Korea, check them out!

As for some things to keep in mind and, also, why I rated it an 8/10…

It is not a film centered around romance or a good bittersweet moment, like many K-Dramas are. I mean it when I say don’t expect things like that.

There is a lot of moving forwards with the plot points, but, a lot of character development didn’t really happen. They seem to be generally the same from beginning to end. There were character developments between Season 1 and Season 2 though.

I also think that the plot moved almost too fast! You don’t really get the time to connect deeply with the characters or certain moments. I can understand why it’s like that (to probably maintain the speed and direction of the plot), but if it wasn’t as rushed, there could’ve been so much more potential imo!

Overall,

This K-Drama is a very nice addition to zombie films, don’t get me wrong! ‘Kingdom’ lived up to the hype that followed its release. It has some juicy plot points, which I loved. Even if you can’t connect very deeply with the characters, the plot pulls you in reallyyy well. It makes me almost want to forgive the lack of character connection lol. I can find it hard to watch for someone who is clueless about Korean culture or has no interest in Korea to even care. But, if you’re already a fan and/or like thriller zombie monster films, it’s a great way to spend time as we’re all social distancing from each other!
