Oh damn, It has been YEARS since the last Maizulee I drew. This is such a good ship... I should do more content of it. This was the first meme/template I found on Twitter that I worked on and the idea was to re do it in a more stylized version but I got lazy, so I decided to just clean up the sketch and call it a day. Here's my take: Mai is the most perverted of the group. Imagine being in her shoes, forced to be a porcelain doll by her parents and society, her only escape from reality was inside her head and it only took one forbidden scroll to let her imagination go wild. Her mind is in the gutter all the time. She would probably write smut fics and become a popular author if she could. ... Maybe I should write a fic about this.

More respect to my girl Mai. She always gets the least votes in nonbender polls. Listen I won't argue that she's stronger than Ty Lee or cooler than Sokka but have you seen her hair... that glossy black sheen..

Mai and Azula don't quite come out and say it, and they probably never quite will, but they both really admire Ty Lee's strength and will.
Mai and Azula, to varying degrees, both know that they're living under their father's thumb and controlled by his whims and approvals, and they both vocally admit at different points in the story that they feel like they have no choice but to become whatever their father is grooming them to be.
But Ty Lee cut ties with her entire family, ran away, and joined the circus all on her own.
Mai and Azula both think that Ty Lee is the bravest person they've ever met.

Is Fire Nation REALLY misogynistic?
The Fire Nation is obviously not as sexist as the Northern Water Tribe, for example, but I think it's not entirely unreasonable to say that there's still a certain amount of sexism.
A lot of people use the evidence of women serving in the army or some women being guards as proof that the Fire Nation isn't sexist in allowing women to fight, but I think it has more to do with the war. In order to win it they just use all the resources they have, even women.
There's also Azula, Mai and Ty Lee. Azula played a big part in the war, but think about it this way: if Azula was still smart and a capable bender, but not as brilliant and as astounding as she was, do you think she would still be allowed to attend the war meetings?
Azula was the only woman at the war council, and I think it kind of shows that you don't just have to be extremely good, you have to be a literal genius to get a seat. Maybe her belief that "almost isn't good enough" comes from sexism in some way too.
Mai and Ty Lee are Azula's friends, so they were also allowed to do their thing. Yet, they've all attended the Royal Academy for Girls, where, among other things, they probably teach noble girls how to be a proper wife to a nobleman they're supposedly going to marry in the future.
So, I think there are still expectations for women in the Fire Nation and it's not really free of misoginy. Although I think the sexism has decreased in past couple of years and after Azula was hailed as a war hero for taking Ba Sing Se. Having their princess be a prominent military commander would significantly change the way the people of the Fire Nation view women.

I want to clear up a mistake people make with Azula and Ursa.
Ursa didn’t play favorites.
Ursa didn’t think Azula was a monster.
Ursa simply, unequivocally, just didn’t enable Azula’s worst traits like Ozai did.
Ozai’s favorite child was Azula, but Ursa still loved her more.
Because enabling isn’t love.
What did Ozai’s enabling do? It made Azula into the type of person to never have any loyal friends. It made the type of person that Mai and Tai Lee would betray at the risk of their own lives.
Ursa pushed Azula to be with her friends. To be with Zuko. Ozai pushed Ursa away, and both kids suffered for it. Azula became a sadist, enjoying seeing her brother get burned—while Zuko was pushed away because he cared for his people.
Azula thought her mom hated her because her mom was the only one who cared enough to tell her no.
