"You'll see soon enough, but no, not yet." She answers back, free hand moving to pull the box backwards so it's closer to her edge of the table as her eyes still scan over the menu as if she hadn't eaten at four leaf enough times to know the menu front and back. Ninety percent of the time she'd opt for the same thing, but she'd still scan the menu as if to consider her options.

"I planted some things." She murmurs, though truth being that she'd already grown kind of tired of this latest whim activity, but that was Maura. She rarely stuck at anything for a long time, especially when it was dirty.

( and the worms, she hated the worms. )

"What do you want to eat?" She asks, turning the menu around and pushing it towards Ben - as if he too, didn't know the menu from front to back.

Her voice ricochets off of the walls in the pub, despite the chatter happening all around him. It's how Ben knows she's there before he sees her, and the excitement is a happy thing. It prompts a feeling of adoration for his pseudo-niece. Who'd have thought a friendship would gift him with something else so dear?

Perhaps this is Ben's way of having a kid - adult kid, sure - despite not having ever had his own, and that's why he treasures Maura in the way that he does.

"What's this?" he asks, poking at the box. "Do you want me to open it now? Assuming it's for me." If it's not, he will definitely have to tell her how much of a tease it is. "I could eat, and you can tell me how things at this whole community garden thing are going."

Maybe it was a little fucked, but Laurel couldn't help but feel a kernel of excitement as she approached Ben on the boardwalk with two beers stuffed into koozies, as promised. There was concern, sure — she wasn't a total asshole — but the slightly morbid curiosity was winning out.

She wondered if this is what high school would've felt like, if high school had been anything but terrible.

"You look like shit," they commented plainly as they took a seat on a bench next to Ben and handed over his beer. "You wanna get right into it or would you rather just drink in silence for a minute?"

"Benjamin." Ricardo said, sternly. "Can you at least look like you're having fun." He supposed one of them should at least give off the impression that they both hadn't come for a bromance dinner, due to the disaster that was their own love lives. "If I have to kick you under this table, I will." He sipped the neat whiskey he'd ordered, glancing around at the various couples. "I mean, we're definitely the best looking couple in here... cheers to that."

"Did you just wander on down or are you here for--" Bo uses the mouth of his beer bottle as a makeshift pointer aimed towards the bonfire that was already burning on the beach, one that he thinks will burn all night with how many people had exes who had burned bridges with them, "--That. I'm a little surprised by the turn out. And by the things being tossed in the flames."

If it wasn't already sad enough that Auggie had found himself at the carnival alone, with Rosie off at her dad's for the weekend, of course he also had to find himself seated right next to one of the very last people he wanted to see.

Two of the four singles in their shared car were already talking animatedly as they started to move further away from the ground, but Auggie was shoulder to shoulder with his ex-boyfriend, both of them quiet.

Auggie had spent months ducking around corners when he caught just a glimpse of someone who might be Ben, in the grocery store or the library or even on the street, only for the two of them to be herded into the same tiny, confined space together at a carnival, of all places.

"So. Um," he said, unable to fathom spending the entire ride in complete silence. "Been a while. How's, uh, your summer been?"

“I don’t know what it is you’re looking for me to tell you, Louie,” Buddy finally responds, unable to conceal his irritation at the line of questioning. If his older sister wanted to know about their oldest sister’s new fiance that badly, he doesn’t see why she doesn’t just go directly to the source.

“He’s fine. He’s a nice guy, some sort of scientist, I think.”

Buddy’s as bitter as they come at nineteen, swallowed whole by the kind of loss that left no breathing room for joyous things like upcoming nuptials and the prospect of a new brother-in-law.

( Everyone knew his fondness for his old brother-in-law was unshakeable, even if that hurt Delilah. )

“A good guy. That’s why this is all fucking comical,” He can be truer with his opinions with Lou than he could with any of his siblings, always placing her dead in the middle between him and Delilah without meaning to, “She was married to a good guy. She chose him over us.”

Over me is what he wants to say, but he doesn’t. Louie would cut him off at the knees for it, reminding him over and over of all the fact based reasons why that was — it never helped.

“She fucked that up pretty spectacularly. I don’t know why we’re all pretending this wedding will ever happen. She’ll chew him up and spit him out before they ever make it down the aisle, or if there’s any mercy going spare out in the universe, he’ll realise what he’s getting himself in for and call quits before they start putting down nonrefundable deposits.”

Buddy wouldn’t have hesitated to express the same sentiment to Delilah’s face if he could, but she didn’t look him the eye much these days. Not since he had gone from asking her for parenting advice to grief struck silence.

( Keeping her and everyone else at arms length was the only way he could handle how hollow everything felt in the aftermath. )

“Mark my words, she’ll never be Delilah Hyun and in ten years time we’ll be sat around at Thanksgiving listening to Dad tell the same eight stories he always tells and he’ll finish off their engagement one with ‘whatever happened to Bernie, great guy’ and no one will care enough to correct him.”

"Hmm...I would offer you something, pasta maybe, but I'm pretty sure someone already devoured what I had left...," Maggie trailed off, a knowing smile on her lips as she shut the fridge door. It'd been her turn to cook and it was always easier at his place, or at least that was always her excuse if only because she knew she wouldn't be stuck with left overs. To have him show up at her place the next day though? A tad unexpected, but there was still plenty of room for a little teasing.

She turned, leaning against the appliance as she watched him near the island, "Can I help you with something tonight, Benny? Or did you really just miss me that much?"
