moments I love in "Tempting Fête"
"I can only read what I've got written down, Mr. Funt." "Councilor Funt! -Funn, Councilor Funn."
the fact that it's been 11 years of this Funn/ Funt debate (alternatively, that both the reverend and the mayor have addressed him properly the last three episodes and seemed to have no problem with it)
"Yes, well, I'll see what I'm doing that day" -leading the funeral, one would hope?
underrated bit of the series in general: cell service only being available in the reverend's bathroom
"I think he's quite dishy" (this scratches such an itch in my brain; I quote it once a week)
the mayor and reverend (who will be dating by the end of the episode) agreeing emphatically with the above statement
the reverend wearing eye shadow! (incredible, show stopping, spectacular, never been seen before)
"It was one mouse! and, and I don't know anything about it"
"All opposed?" "... I mean, I'd say opposed is a strong word-" "Done! Carried unanimously!"; "All opposed? "I, uh-" "Overruled! Motion carried!"
"We already have an identity: it's miserable and it works." (i want this on a t-shirt)
"There hasn't been a fête for eleven years." "Astonishing. Who's in charge of local events?" "Rudyard." "Ah."
"Look, it's easy to throw money around and get excited about rustic dancing, but we've got-" "I'LL SAY IT IS!"
"His world had once again become an increasingly scary place. There was only one thing left to do..." "Georgie?" "Yeah?" "We're emigrating."; "It was time for swift and decisive action, and there was only one place to head for: Reverend Wavering's bathroom"; at the funeral I was able to witness Rudyard, bereft of Reverend and with few attendees, deliver a stirring and entirely improvised speech about the circuities of fate, the struggles of discord, and an intractable acceptance of the way the cookie crumbles, a sermon that moved the late Basil Corbett’s niece to say, quite simply:" "We want our money back" (some really fantastic narration moments in this one that make me giggle every time)
Rudyard including Madeleine in the emigration plans is said so sweetly and it honestly makes me a little soft
"One word: Chapman." "I should return his calls-" "Chapman?" "- probably won't, though"
"Rudyard, other people do those things for you!" "Conscription?" "Volunteering!"
"I, I, I do like spreadsheets!"
(No Madeleine, I hate raffles!") (these posts are always so Rudyard-centric lol and it's helped me come to the conclusion that he really is the funniest)
"Do you know how many gallons of fluid I'll have to drain from a man that size? Possibly thousands!" "What a ridiculous lie!" (this is another one that I quote often lol)
"I wish I were Mrs. Carnegie!" "You will be, Mrs, Turner. You will be." (WHAT IS THIS RESPONSE?!)
"Fancy a funeral?" "That a threat?"; "Don't forget your funeral." "Was that a threat?"
"Socializing? That'd take up ten minutes and then what would they do? No. Perpetual scheduled activity, that's the way."
"Put some clothes on!" "IT'S MY HOUSE!"
"Antigone?" "What?!" "Helicopters!" "Go back to your side of the table."
"Now get over there and sabotage something!" "*sigh* Fine." "Do you really think that's going to help?" "Oh maybe not, but it'll cheer me up."
"Called up the family, made up a story about... well, re-organizing a fête, that sort of thing." "How did they react?" "Well, they weren't very happy..." "But?" "No, that's it, they weren't very happy."
"You know, I can actually see your future." "Oh yes?" "Mmm hmm. And it involves this crystal ball getting shoved STRAIGHT up your-"
"Alright sir! Mission accomplissshhhhed." "Hello, Georgie." "Hello..." "Get out, Georgie." "Goodbye..."
The Mayor trying to rustic dance for a couple of hours before giving up
Lady Templar's glass eye. (That's it. That's the post.)
"He'd be spinning in the grave you haven't put him in yet!" (best line of the episode honestly)
"What a dreadful little man!" "Yes... mind you, he looks good in a suit"
"Even in a crowd, they all look lonely" (🤌🤌🤌)
"Can't win 'em all" 'Winning anything at all would be a nice change." (also want this on a t-shirt)
"You like to be the hero, don't ya?" (Georgie's the GOAT)
"Rudyard. Do you know what this chap did?" "Yes, he told me" (my man is already so tired of Eric lol)

#jason todd#anyway mmmm still turning it over in my mind BUT#antigone + her sense of principle such that she's willing to take her confrontation with creon to its logical extreme#she knows he'll kill her & it's not that she welcomes it but there's that sense of fatality: she's more tied to the dead than the living#she's basically daring creon to have her excuted in the same way that jason is challenging bruce#jason demanding the mourning for his own corpse. antigone buries her brother but jason is the avenging unburied ghost#come to DEMAND burial. and yet he's also alive so he's also antigone who has a choice - or does he???#and then dick's got his own antigone side re:principle but in this fight he's sister ismene#ismene determined to stop antigone from getting herself killed but also angry with her#and feeling like if she would just LISTEN then she'd see that ismene is right and sensible and has all order on her side#to her everything that antigone wants sounds like chaos and the breakdown of order#and that mmm i feel like there's this consistent thread where we kinda dance around the question of well. /is/ jason suicidal#he puts a gun to his head. he lets go of the train. and yet back then as a kid he wanted to live so badly!#again like antigone who seems to be hurtling herself toward death and yet it's not really what she wants and yet and yet#anyway many thoughts still much confused but. we'll see.#my comic art but we are using the term ''art'' loosely#since it's literally just copy-pasted comic panels with. like. bad highlighting occasionally sfdsfds#dick grayson

@eventheodds (outlaw) || night watch (7) [Closed Starter]
"Woah, woah, I didn't mean to scare you like that," Nick settles down next to her atop the vista overlooking the campsite. He puts a comforting (hopefully) hand on Meryl's back and rubs soothing circles slowly, softly. "Just tell me if I'm overstepping. I know it's a lot right now."
She speaks of two traumatized men who'd gone through the wringer—one of which went through something similar to him, he assumes. How Vash still thinks of others before himself, Wolfwood doesn't know, as for himself...
"Didn't used to be this way, if he was anything like me," Nick starts, keeping his voice hushed so as to not wake the others—as if most of them didn't have heightened senses anyway. "Didn't even care about myself, for a long while. Why would I help anyone else if I've got blood on my hands? Why would I care, if I'm a monster?"
"Blondie and I have something in common, in regards to that. We take all of our grief, all of our pain, all the trauma—and we put it in a little box, lock it up, and throw the key into a sandpit. We don't talk about it." Is it a good idea? No. Has it ever worked out for him? Also no. "Vash—I think any Vash—loves humanity. If he has the chance to help someone and it aligns with his morals, he's on it. I think he just likes seeing people smile. Even if he's screaming deep down, he sees a human smile at him and everything is okay until that box creaks open again."
Nick scratches the side of his neck, not wanting to talk about himself, but knowing he has to, "I really turned off that part of my brain for a while. Used to care about people all the time as a kid, especially my brother, but when I became a weapon I... it didn't come naturally to me anymore. All I could see was the bad in humanity—the bad in myself. Despite all that... Goldie and Short-Stuff—the other Short-Stuff—loved me. I could hardly believe it."
"All this is to say: They could only handle carrying their burdens because of you. Because you love them and you'd do the same for them—not that it matters, because they'd give the world to you for pennies if you asked. You saved them, alright? The least they could do for you is make sure you're safe, and maybe they weren't around this time, but it's probably because they've got their hands full."
His hand grips Meryl's arm opposite of him below her shoulder, and offers a side hug, "We'll take over for them for now. You're safe with us. We'll find a way to save them just like we saved you, promise."

crochet abandoned in her woven basket at her feet, minette is perched beside the stall table with a worn copy of the two towers in her hands. the book shows a wear and tear from years of love and use, the corners of the paperback fraying and peeling in a way she had found comforting. her mum calls for her to take over as she moves to step away, a dismissive sure passes her lips, but she makes no movement other than the turning of yet another page.

Thoughts on the Oedipus Cycle
With the only real Greek literature I had read before this being the Odyssey in 9th grade Humanities, I had pretty low expectations. Shoutout to Homer for deconstructing the traditional hero and creating a timeless epic, but wow that story was boring, I just completely gave up halfway through once I realized that the entire rest of the story was just him sneaking around the suitors. But the Oedipus Cycle? Man, something was in the water when Sophocles wrote the Oedipus Cycle.
The Oedipus Cycle consists of three plays, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. And fair warning; these get pretty nasty. For those not in the know, Oedipus is a tragic Greek hero best known for accidentally killing his dad and doing it with his mom, and these plays chronicle the fallout of his horrible mistake. Oedipus Rex follows Oedipus as he uncovers the comedy of errors that led him to become history's most famous mommas boy and the immediate consequences of his discovery. Oedipus at Colonus picks up 20 years later with Oedipus in exile with his daughter Antigone, and chronicles his last days spent in Athens (special guest appearance from everyone's favorite son of Poseidon, Theseus). And lastly, Antigone shows the aftermath of Oedipus' death, and the last days of his daughter.
The common thread between all these stories is prophecy. Oedipus Rex shows how fate is inevitable, because even though Oedipus tried very hard to avoid his fate (Maybe don't kill random people if a prophecy says you're destined to kill you dad though? Like how hard is that), at the end of the day he was sleeping in bed with his mother and having a bunch of weird sister-daughters and son-brothers. Later on, he is gifted the power of prophecy and foretells the doom of the sons and city who have forsaken him. After learning he is fated to both die by and kill his own brother in battle, his son goes forth anyways, resigned to the fact that he can't fight his fate. Finally, the new king Creon mirrors Oedipus in Oedipus Rex when a horrible fate is prophesized for him as consequence for him sending Antigone to her death. While in Oedipus Rex Creon chastised the king for not wanting to believe the prophecy, he now finds himself in the same situation, helpless against the cruel hand of fate, not wanting to believe. He tries to put a stop to the execution he ordered but it is too late, and Antigone's death leads to the suicides of both his wife and son. The moral here being that no man knows better than the gods.
The prose throughout is witty and expertly crafted, thanks to both Sophocles and the translators. The chorus parts in particular were so deep with metaphors and imagery that I found myself having to reread them multiple times to understand what they were saying. I also had fun imagining while reading what a live performance of these plays would look like, as the script is flexible and the director is given much freedom for interpretation. For something written so long ago the characters spoke in a dramatized but still believable way that felt refreshing, the arguments between Antigone and her sister Ismene felt particularly alive and passionate. Speaking of Antigone, she was easily the most compelling character for me. Her love for her family overcomes all, and she's willing to do anything to stand up for those she loves, burying her brother even though she knows she'll be put to death for it, because it's the right thing to do.
In summary, the Oedipus Cycle is an angsty, violent, and awesome story that has revived my interest in Ancient Greek literature. Would recommend to anyone who likes reading about messed up stuff.

moments I love in “Flowers for Chapman”
“hundreds of flowers have gone into Chapman’s funeral home... but none of them have ever come out again!” *roll of thunder* “mmm... that probably sounded more dramatic in your head.”
“Wreck, wreckage, disrupt, destroy- YES!!” (Chaos Georgie™ is my favourite Georgie)
“strapping a coffin to the back of a moped does lack a certain finesse.” “speed and efficiency, sir.” “No, no, quite correct, you carry on”
the way that Rudyard says “oh, we won’t pull on that particular thread” in such a weary voice
Madeleine’s completely sincere and matter-of-fact delivery of: “... Ms Petunia Bloom, the greatest flower merchant of Piffling... quite naturally played the part of Colonel Pickering”
“you must be very proud, dear”
Chapman’s uncomfortable laugh when he’s talking to Petunia, followed by “oooh, very good”
“Petunia. There’s an astronaut hiding in the begonias.”
the way Chapman elongates his words when Antigone says the gardenias smell like the dead lady in their mortuary (”Suuuuurrree.” “Iiiiis it?”)
“to make the bodies smell better? What a great touch!” (the sincerity, the instant understanding, the appreciation, the way it makes her so happy- I’m fucking deceased)
“but he’s not ALLOWED down there!”
“You’ll find out, Chapman, believe me. You’ll. Find. Out.” *pause* “I can’t wait!”
“Sleep is the half-brother of death.” “D’you want a bagel?” *pause* “yes”
“a local man also has a twin cat” “DAMN YOU, MARLOWE!”
the completely unacknowledged “I’m great at arson!”
“Ha! Only an amateur leaves a coffin unguarded”
Rudyard’s laugh after Chapman says he can’t find the standard business shorts
“I’m a war criminal?!”
“there he is, strangling the newspaper man!!”

I feel like all roads leave back to Civrun with my characters and I don't really mind it. With my dnd characters anyways.
Silas who born of Madomian had Civrun's intelligence and curiosity. He carried the stalwart sense of duty and strength of his father but the intelligence and eventual wit of his uncle. Civrun and Madomian were separated forcefully but Silas is a reconciliation, in a way. Civrun is so strongly imprinted into Madomian that even his son will have traits of his brother. Civrun and Madomian are two halves of Dandrari. They were my first time trying to write a brother relationship and thinking about them gets me emotional ugh.
Then there's Antigone. I tend to think of Civrun as one sun sets, another rises. That new sun being Antigone. Bright and lovely and so deeply in love with the mere fact of existence. Her curiosity, her will to make Nurnas brighter. A spiritual successor to Civrun but without being him. The thread that connects them is tenuous and hardly existent other than their will to see Nurnas be better and the woman who plays them. But I think a lot about how Antigone must have looked staring at that Civrun memorial in Whitestone, not knowing that she and this dead man she will never know are made of the same sunburst.
And finally we have Caevara who is so similar to Civrun. Parental neglect, stifling expectations, but she actively scorns her family where Civrun felt like he had to prove himself to them. She's the eldest sibling too. She answers that question of what if it had been Madomian who had failed the family instead? What does an elder sibling who forsakes their sense of duty look like? What does a wizard without ethics look like? I love her. She's like me answering questions to myself and the story if what the themes I'd explores with Civrun and Madomian had been irrevocably different and the woman worse.
It feels like my PCs end up homages to Civrun in little ways which I don't mind. I sometimes wonder how Civrun would have spoken to Caevara. They're my most similar characters to date but also my most different. They'd argue about magical ethics. They'd resent their families in such different ways and argue about why you need to be better when your family hates you or why you're allowed to be worse. I love them so much. My blorbos.
Caevara feels very special to me somehow because she's an exploration of feminine rage and apathy. She's a Madomian who decided to say fuck it, but still loves her younger brother more than anything just like Madomian. Dies.

*closed to: @antigonai *setting: ollivander’s, diagon alley
He’s curious out of habit, not just nature, having trained his eyes to focus on some random, innocuous thing and figure out a humorous use for it — particularly where moments of uncertainty were concerned. It’s a practice he’d picked up while on a St. Mungo’s stay or at a support group session ( truthfully, rehab in all the many forms he’d tried had, by now, blended into a jumbled mess of one half-hearted attempt after another ) and so, muddy hazel hues fix onto the vase in the corner, its assortment of sprigs collecting dust in little spiral patterns. His head rests at a tilt, envisioning the sight from a different angle, while his ears are soon alerted to the presence of another.
Eschewing a proper greeting, George offers, “Hit that with a transfiguration charm, turn it upside down, and you’d have an adorable pygmy squid for a pet.” There’s a spin on his heels as he turns to face them, “So, which wand in here’s best suited to a bit of transfiggy, Tiggy?”

@howperfectlyproper has met with a terrible fate.
Tumblr media
Raven had felt him coming from a mile away.
To be fair, she supposed, most people didn’t have the obvious advantage of being able to pick up on the emotions of everyone around them, and if she was also being fair, she was supposed to be learning to stifle her powers - it had been one of the deals in exchange for sanctuary within the city, that she disguise herself as a normal human and learn how to use her powers properly.  But, well, she knew that isolating an entire sense she had was dangerous, at least, when it came to dealing with Amanda Waller.  The woman wasn’t about to just let one of her greatest assets slip away from A.R.G.U.S.  Not without a fight.
“I know you’re there,” she called out into the hallway, crossing her arms.  “I’ve been feeling you for the last three days while you’ve been skulking around the building.  So you can either tell me what it is you want or you can leave before I have to fight you.”

Calliope was a familiar setting; though it’d been ages since she’d been in a proper Greek theater. (Though admittedly, her name may have graced far more theaters than her own physical presence.) She owed it to herself with her newfound position in the city to keep a tab on cultural events, and the night showings at least worked with her sensibilities and schedule best.
There was something about the city that kept giving off the faint nagging presence of the presence of other spirit origins; alas, she very rarely ran into these others. It became static at the back of her mind, particularly annoying on this night. Doubly vexing was the play she found herself at; it seems as though she’d wandered into an adaptation of Andromeda. Wonderful, she’d get to watch people glorify That Awful Man tonight.
Tumblr media
She put fingertips to her temple, staring out at the stage yet, not paying much attention to who was beside her to here her remarks. “Who even uses a woman’s head to win the attention of another woman? Some may like carnage, but how uncouth.” never mind that that was her head, and that whatever they were using as her head looked particularly ugly at a distance. (She knew she was a monster, but really?)
