Why is it that in a world where everything fits in your pocket i long for more complex ‘single use’ technology.

Not in the since that I can only use these things one time, but in the since that each thing only has one purpose.

A camera, film and digital.

An iPod/pDAP with good headphones.

A kindle.

A portable gaming system.

Don’t get me wrong, I love having a phone, I love technological advancement, I love having the world in my pocket.

But there’s something in the ritual of these things that had been part of everyday life that I didn’t get to experience just before my birth that I long for.

​I mean, there is a site where you can acquire a lot of movies via torrent. I tend to use (rot13) 1337k.gb and I got a heavily discounted Windscribe VPN subscription that I use on almost all of my devices.

But my thing is that... I want commentary reels and special features, and sometimes you'll download a movie but the fucking subtitles are either bad or they become desynced over time and I haaaaate it.

So I've been gathering bits and pieces over the past year to get a Plex system going in my house and it works like a fucking DREAM. But it requires some investment. If you just want to have a few local copies of your favorite movies, this is way overkill. But me, I am canceling all of my family's streaming services and pivoting to our Plex.

So what I have for actually getting the files:

I don't have this model but it's similar to this, a Pioneer External Blu-ray Reader. It sits on a little shelf and is connected to my PC by a USB cable. (I think I got mine for around 68 bucks so you can wait for a sale.)

I use MakeMKV which will rip the big honking raw files from a Blu-ray and leave them as matroshka (.mkv) files.

Because these raw files are ENORMOUS, I compress them in Handbrake. Handbrake is wildly powerful, can convert file formats and make them super small. I have my Handbrake set up special to dump all the non-English language subtitles and audio tracks to save space.

(SUPER BONUS TIP FOR HANDBRAKE: If you have a dedicated GPU, you can give Handbrake permission to use it, and it'll compress shit literally 10x faster, love it.)

At the moment, I am using a Western Digital portable 5TB external harddrive because it was one sale and I couldn't beat the price. Eventually, I want to upgrade to two 10TB HDDs so I can keep a full backup of everything I'm ripping. Because this is a bit of a time and energy commitment and I don't wanna lose all my progress here!

At first I was running Plex off my desktop PC and that worked totally fine, but my family hates having to touch my desktop to wake it up every time, so I very recently grabbed one of these guys:

This is a Beelink Mini PC S12 Pro. It is small enough to fit in my hand but it is a speedy little demon that runs Windows 11. (And eventually I am gonna use it to firewall out ads from our entire home network, I'm pumped for that project but ANYWAY.)

The upside of these mini boys is that instead of being a hefty workhorse like my main computer, this is small and has a low-power draw.

So I moved my Plex Media Server to the mini PC, plugged in my 5TB drive of movies, and now everyone in the house can easily stream anything I have added to the library.

This is what it looks like, if you're curious. Any device in the house that runs Plex and is signed in can select any movie or TV show I have and just watch it like it was Netflix or something.

A month ago, I has like.... 65 movies? Now I'm ripping a few and we're gonna break 100 soon.

When I lived in Broward County, FL, I had an extravagantly wonderful library system. Tax dollars at fucking WORK, y'all. Now I live in Georgia and the library system is not nearly as good, but I have still gotten my hands on a frankly ridiculous amount of blurays. Every week I'm picking up 3 to 10 movies or shows, taking them home, making good copies, and returning them.

All of this is an investment and it is work. But as someone who built my computer, built my keyboard, cracked my 3DS and PS Vita-- this is fun to me! This is what I love to do. And through doing it, I've seen more movies in the past year than the last ten years put together.

So yeah, I can't recommend this to everyone, but if you wanna get out of your subscriptions and to just have high quality shit on demand, this is what I'm doing.

Cannot stress this enough tho, if this seems interesting to you: wait for sales. All the components here go on steep sale if you wait patiently. Take your time assembling the parts and keep in mind that shit is modular, you can upgrade parts later.

Ubiquity Unifi 24 port gigabit switch (unrelated to video stuff)

Hidden behind the rack are a pair of Blackmagic Design signal converters: one SDI to Analog, and one Analog to SDI.

The RS16x16 takes center stage, since most standard definition signals and all of the audio routes through it. Here's the current router chart:

Video and audio on this router can be sent as a pair, or separately as I so choose. I control it via the front panel keypad and watch the status on the LED matrix, but I can also run it via RS232 in a terminal. I've been thinking of making my own control panel for it modeled after the NV9601.

Many of these sources are audio from my various computers, video and audio from vintage computers, connections for a game system or two, and some other oddities. The destinations are a few vintage computer monitors and some video encoder devices on my various desktops, which I control mostly from OBS.

The last 4 destinations are the CQ-900 Quad's inputs for video, and 4 faders on my AM500 Stereo Mixer for audio. This means I can pick 4 things and give each one a fader on the mixer:

This is my Atus AM500 stereo mixer. The output of which runs to the Scott Integrated Amplifier 480A below, which runs to two sets of speakers in my workshop. I can have a video game running on one fader, audio from a voice chat on another, and music on a third. Works great for co-op games or streaming stuff.

Source/Destination #10 is labeled Bench, which is my workbench across the room:

On the workbench I have a Knox RS8x8 composite video router hooked to a bidirectional tie line to the main RX16x16 router. This means I can send a signal over to the test equipment, or send something being tested on the bench over to the main router, and then to an encoder device. There's also an SDI line to carry the HD feed from one of my bench cameras over to the SDI router, but I don't always use that.

The workbench router doesn't have too much wired to it, so I haven't written up a chart. I've got two bench cameras, a small monochrome monitor, and a TV, plus the ability to run video cables directly to an oscilloscope.

Here's what it looks like behind the main rack:

Yeah. It's a mess, but it's always in flux, so I don't bother arranging the cables too neatly. I try to use BNC terminated cables whenever possible, but occasionally I have to use RCA adapters. Right now the TBC and the Sync Generator aren't wired up because I don't need them. I unplug the SDI router when I'm not using it because it's loud and obnoxious.

Most of this is surplus gear I got for cheap, mixed in with inexpensive new bits and pieces of things I scored online. I've got other equipment scattered about that I connect as needed. There are also video adapters you don't see here, and this doesn't even cover all of the various encoding hardware I have installed in my desktop computers.

So, that's my setup (as of right now). It will be different in a month, I'm sure.

Political economy vs inflation

As Biden lays out ambitious plans to stimulate the US economy and fight inequality with new money creation (spending) and money destruction (higher taxes on corporations, capital gains and the right), a firing squad of economists assembled to issue dire inflation warnings.

They're repeating the economic doctrine of the pasty 40 years, an austerity doctrine that focuses on the inflationary risks of "deficit spending" (when governments don't tax as much money out of the economy as they inject in the same year).

It's a doctrine that made a pretense to being a science, going to far as to create a fake "Nobel Prize" in economics in a bid for scientific credibility (the Nobel administrators eventually folded the economics prize into its administrative remit).

The "neoclassicals" used abstract equations to "prove" a bunch of economic truths that - purely coincidentally - made rich people much, much richer and poor people much, much poorer.

Tellingly, the most exciting development in economics of the past 50 years is "behavioral economics" - a subdiscipline whose (excellent) innovation was to check to see whether people actually act the way that economists' models predict they will.

It's this vain, discredited and shambolic group who have assembled behind leaders like Larry Summers to decry Biden's stimulus spending plans, insisting that we are flirting with hyperinflation and the collapse of the USD as a global reserve currency.

But economists aren't the last word in understanding stimulus and inflation. If you're trying to figure out whether Summers is right and inequality, poverty and crumbling infrastructure are the price of American stability, it's worth checking out the *political* economists.

Blyth doesn't dismiss Summers' inflationary fears out of hand, but he does say that Summers is vastly overestimating the likelihood that stimulus spending will trigger inflation - Summers says there's a 1-in-3 chance of inflation, while Blyth says it's more like 1-in-10.

To understand the difference, it's useful to first understand what we mean by inflation: "a general, sustained rise in the level of all prices."

It's not a short-term spike (like we saw with GPUs when everyone upgraded their gaming rigs at the start of the pandemic).

It's also not an asset-bubble. House prices in Toronto are high, but that's not inflation. They're high because "Canada stopped building public housing in the 1980s and turned it into an asset class and let the 10 percent top earners buy it all and swap it with each other."

For inflation to happen in the wake of the stimulus, the spending would have to lead to too much money chasing not enough goods. Blyth gives some pretty good reasons to be skeptical that this will happen.

Start with the wealthy: they don't spend much, relative to their income. Their consumption needs are already met (that's what it means to be rich). You can only own so many Sub-Zero fridges, and even after you fill them with kobe beef and Veuve Cliquot, you're still rich.

What rich people do with extra money is *speculate*. That's why top-level giveaways generate socially useless, destructive asset bubbles. Remember, these aren't inflation, which is good, because everyone agrees that inflation is hard to stop once it gets going.

They're speculative bubbles. We have a much better idea of how to prevent bubbles: transaction taxes, hikes to the capital gains tax, and high marginal tax rates at the top bracket.

Okay, fine, so the rich won't be able to spend us into inflation after a broad stimulus, but what about poor people? Well, the bottom 60% of the US is grossly indebted, suffocating under medical debt, student debt and housing debt. A *lot* of that will disappear.

That will transfer a lot of stimulus money from poor people to rich people (who own the debt), which is why we need high capital gains and top-bracket taxation. But it will also sweep away a vast swathe of the financialized economy.

The point of long-term debt isn't to get paid off - it's to generate ongoing cash-flows that can be securitized and turned into bonds. Securitization converted "advanced" economies into shambling, undead debt-zombies.

It's securitization that led to the 2008 financial crisis, and it's securitization that sustains Wall Street's speculative acquisition of every single-family dwelling for sale in America as part of a bid to turn every home into an extractive slum.

Blythe explains that if the rich have nothing to buy and the poor use most of their stimulus to get out of debt, it will likely reorient the US economy to useful things: creating jobs to make stuff that people want to buy.

But what about the dollar's status as a global reserve currency? Won't all that stimulus send other countries scurrying around for another form of national savings? Blyth's answer is pretty convincing.

First, because there aren't any great alternatives: the European economy is growing at half the rate of the US. The Chinese economy is booming, but if you buy Chinese assets, there's a good chance you'll never be able to get them out of China.

Gold? Bitcoin? Leave aside the deflationary risk of pegging your currency to an inelastic metal or virtual token, leave aside the environmentally devastating effect of cryptocurrency (cryptos consume enough energy to offset the entire planetary solar capacity!).

Instead, think of the volatility of these assets, with their drunken, wild swings - countries that dump USD due to inflationary fears are hardly likely to switch to a crypto that can lose 20% of its value in a day.

And remember how much of that volatility is driven by out-and-out fraud, with major crypto exchanges and gold schemes imploding without warning, taking hundreds of millions of dollars with them. This is not a stable alternative to the dollar!

Beyond the lack of an alternative, there's another reason to believe that the USD will remain a global reserve, as Blyth elegantly explains.

Think of a Chinese company supplying the US market. Chances are, that's actually US company's subcontractor, getting paid in USD.

These end up swapped with the Chinese central bank for Chinese money, because Chinese companies need to pay salaries, rent, and other expenses in Renminbi, not dollars. The Chinese central bank holds onto the USDs, using them as a national savings, a reserve currency.

If China were to dump all its USD holdings into the world economy, it would tank the US dollar - which is to say, it burn China's own national savings. China's central bank needs to do something with those dollar savings, so they buy 10-year US T-bills.

Same goes for Germany - net exporters depend on a net importer to buy their stuff, and primarily that's the USA. They are stuck in a form of "monetarily assured destruction," and a crisis of confidence is unlikely "because you’ve got nowhere else to take your confidence."

Next, Blyth takes up is the proposed increase in the corporate tax rate, and he says that investors are actually surprisingly okay with this - he reminds us of Buffett's maxim, "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked."

A hike in the corporate tax rate has the potential to reveal which of the "great" firms "are just really good at tax optimization" rather than efficient production. It'll smash those unproductive firms to pieces that can be bought by good firms for pennies on the dollar.

The final issue that Blyth takes up is an excellent one for this May Day: the relationship of higher wages to inflation. When the US had large, centrally managed industries with large, centralized unions, there was the risk that higher prices would trigger higher wages.

But the US doesn't have a unionized workforce with guaranteed COLA inflationary rises - there's no "wage-price spiral" risk of higher prices leading to higher wages and then higher prices.

The neoclassical theory of wages is based on the "marginal productivity" and "higher than outside option" theories: wage-levels are the product of how much money they stand to make from your work, and how much someone else is willing to pay you to work for them.

But economists like Suresh Naidu describe how high-tech surveillance can disrupt this equilibrium: you can spy on workers instead of paying them more, can impose onerous conditions on them that wring them of everything they can produce.

This kind of bossware was once the exclusive burden of low-waged, precarious workers, but thanks to the shitty technology adoption curve, it is working its way up the privilege gradient to increasingly elite workforce segments.

Digital micromanagement went from the factory floor to remote customer-support reps to office workers who are minutely surveilled by Office 365, all the way up to MDs and other elite professionals:

This has led to increased profits for firms - firms now take a larger share of their productivity gains, and workers see stagnant or declining wages. That excess profit represents slack in the system.

It means that even if companies' costs go up, they can hold prices steady - all they need to do is reduce their retained profits.

We've had 40 years of price stability at the expense of a living wage for working people.

Higher wages are only inflationary if we assume that the 1% will continue to extract vast sums from their investments and use them to kick off destructive asset bubbles.

Long answer: let’s talk about audio amplifiers, encodings, and digital vs analog.

Let’s talk a simple use case. You have a DVD player, and a speaker system, and you want to connect them to each other.

The most obvious way to do this is an aux cord, a 3.5mm male/male cord. These transmit an analog audio signal to whatever’s plugged in on the far side. In fact, they transmit TWO analog audio signals: left and right, for stereo audio.

This signal is produced by a Digital Analog Converter, a kind of circuit that can take in a binary value and produce an analog voltage proportional to that value. If you have say, a four-bit DAC, you can create 16 different voltages. DAC’s are a deep and complicated topic and there are like a hundred different ways to build DAC’s each with their own pros and cons, so let’s just say that DAC’s can have varying quality in how accurately they reproduce what you give them. The more bits  a DAC has, the closer the signal it produces will be to a smooth analog signal, and a higher quality DAC will be more accurate when reproducing a voltage.

(note: If I write a number like this: 101₂, 431₈, 5A7₁₆, that subscript is indicating which base it is in. ₂ is binary, ₁₀ is decimal, ₁₆ is hexadecimal, etc.)

For example, let’s say we give four-bit DAC the signal 0101₂, which is 5₁₀. A four-bit DAC can produce 16 different levels, 0 through 15, so 5/15 is going to be ⅓ of the maximum voltage. If you has a 6V maximum output, an ideal DAC would produce a 2V signal in response. A good quality DAC will do this with minimal wobble, no overshoot, and without much noise. A poor-quality DAC might have a small voltage offset, wobble all over, hiss with noise, etc. No DAC will be perfect, but you can be better or worse. In the below image, the orange line is the ideal signal that the DAC is trying to produce, and the blue line is the output of the DAC trying to get as close as it can using only a few voltages. In practice there are ways to improve this a little, but that’s the idea.

The digital data stream is fed through the DAC, which imparts some badness. Then this signal has to be amplified, usually to a few tens of milliwatts. This is enough power to drive small headphones, but if you plug it in to a big speaker system, it’s just not enough. Cheap laptop speakers are usually around 10W. Bigger speaker systems run upwards of 100W. Notably, this amplification step adds some more badness: no amplifier is perfect, so it will distort the audio. How much depends once again on how well designed the amplifier is.

When you play audio out through your DVD player, the computer inside looks at the audio signal, which is a list of binary numbers. These numbers must be played out through the DAC, usually at a rate of 44100 times per second. If you feed the output signal of that into some speakers, they will vibrate to reproduce the original recorded sound signal close enough that no one notices the digital edge. There’s a few intervening steps here, though.

(EDIT: it should be pointed out that the "steps" in this can and are removed by filtering circuits. The limitation that digital imposes is mostly in volume: if you don't have enough bits, you can't accurately convey a song that has very loud parts and very quiet parts without doing something bad to one of those.)

But now you feed that low-power signal to your speaker system, and it has to amplify the signal again, up to however many watts it needs. This introduces even more badness to the signal. You’ve now got three different sources of distortion: whatever DAC is in your DVD player, the headphone amplifier in your DVD player, and then again for the speaker amplifier in your sound system. There’s also some analog noise picked up on the aux cable, because it’s carrying an analog signal.

Depending on who you are and how much you care, you might think “well this sucks, even if I get a really cool sound system, I’m stuck with the audio my DVD player spits out. What if the DAC and amplifier in there sucks? Do I just have to buy a really expensive DVD player?”

Enter digital audio!

Digital audio means that the DVD player doesn’t do anything with that raw stream of data off the DVD. Instead, it packages it up and streams it, unchanged, to a dedicated audio device. The audio device can then decode the stream, and use a single DAC and amplifier to produce the output signal. As a result, you can buy a really nice high end sound system with a shiny DAC and a nice clean amplifier and get high quality audio. Optical is a (but not the only) way to do this.

Optical audio is TOSLINK, an optical audio standard that was developed in the 80′s by Toshiba. It implements a protocol called S/PDIF, the Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace, which was developed by Sony and Phillips when they were standardizing the CD. The idea was exactly this: rather than needing to have a CD player, DAC and amplifier in one box, you can have a separated player that you can plug into anything, and send the digital data directly. S/PDIF can also be sent over a normal coaxial cable as an electrical signal, which used to be pretty common in studios.

The big benefits of S/PDIF are that you almost always reduce noise over having to use two amplifiers, and if you go the extra mile you can select hardware with high quality DACs and amplifiers. You also get some secret bonuses: S/PDIF can transmit Surround Sound. By default, S/PDIF transmits two uncompressed, high quality digital audio channels, left and right. This is not too different from the aux cable. The real trick is that because it’s digital, you can put whatever you want down there.

If you’re a the audio team on a movie, you have probably recorded the movie in high-detail surround sound, so that it can be played back on theater speakers. This is usually 7.1 audio: three speakers in the front, two on the sides, two in the back, and one bass channel with bone-shaking low frequency sounds. If you play this back through a two-channel aux cable, it all gets crushed down to two channels, left and right, with the bass layered in on top. A speaker system might use a filter or intelligent levels to direct more bass to a dedicated subwoofer or a particular speaker, but it won’t compare to having a channel of audio going directly to each speaker. Using S/PDIF, you can feed a home theater system, which will usually be 2.1, 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1 speakers.

A generic 7.1 layout

S/PDIF can provide a compressed 7.1 audio stream. Compressed audio is pretty good: I can’t tell the difference the handful of times I’ve used it, and tons of hardware going back over 30 years supports S/PDIF. It’s great for if you have an old speaker system, or if you want to save a buck picking up a used home theater rather than buying new. Now you’re not just better than an aux cable, you’re doing something that, fundamentally, an aux cable cannot possibly do. Great choice, if, of course, anything you’re listening to has surround audio. Most blu-rays will be surround. Some DVD’s will be surround. A lot of new video games even do surround sound!

There is something better than S/PDIF, which is HDMI Audio. HDMI can carry up to 8 channels of uncompressed, extraordinarily high quality audio. If you have a new speaker setup that has both S/PDIF and HDMI, HDMI is probably better, but if I’m honest, I can’t hear the difference.

Daily Blog #15: August 22, 2021

Dollar Tree is honestly pretty fucking awesome 👌👌👌

I set my alarm for like 6:25 this morning, but it took 6 minutes for the "Horsin' Around" theme song instrumental to wake me up. I was pretty tired lol. I just dismissed it and went back to sleep.

I only went back to sleep because I knew I had another alarm set for 7:00. That got me up.

I should mention that this was still in the RV over an hour away from the house.

After I got up, I went to go get a shower, and did so successfully.

Unfortunately, I had forgotten my brush this time and had to do it afterwards after my hair had a bit of time to dry, which did make it a little more difficult lol.

I got dressed and grabbed my stuff, putting it into my car.

I made it a point to see and say "see you later" to my grandparents before I left for the flea market.

My dad insisted that I stayed to say goodbye to my mom, so I left.

I did NOT have cell service up there, as was mentioned in my previous 2 blogs of which I could only post today, so finding my way was a tiny bit difficult until I got some service to ask Google to take me to "...".

It worked and I got there.

On my drive, I listened to 1 by Simple Kid, a CD I had previously purchased at a Dollar Tree location.

I got a call from the guy at the flea market saying that I had some people there waiting for me. He asked how far away I was, to which I said "about 10 minutes." Ironically, that call made me miss my exit, as Google couldn't talk during the call, and added about 3 minutes to my arrival time lmao.

I did sell the Xbox that he said someone was interested in. I got $40 for it. I spent 27¢ on it. Pretty good return if you ask me.

I couldn't sell it with anything other than a power cord because the controller and AV cables I had been using to play it there were for my personal console. I'm just glad I can actually hook my Xbox up and stop having to drag them to the flea market along with a small library of games.

Not too long after I sold the Xbox, someone came in and asked if I wanted to see some electronics he had in his car. I went out with him. It was a pair of 3ft speakers and a Pioneer audio system with dual cassette decks (although neither of them works) and a 25 Disc CD-changer, as well as the standard AM/FM tuner. Additionally, there was a Fisher amplifier and AM/FM tuner as well as a Fisher Direct Drive turntable. He said he wanted $60 for em, but before that he casually, and probably accidentally, dropped that he was just gonna take em to the thrift store.

Big mistake.

I got em for $35 lmao. THERE GOES MOST OF MY PROFIT.

Oh well.

I tested everything. As I mentioned, the cassette decks don't work, but everything else does apart from the turntable needing a new stylus.

I posted some new photos of the shop to Facebook, and someone soon DMed me about a stereo system.

I priced everything, and it turns out I have about $300 worth of equipment from that deal, the Fisher amp and tuner being worth about $150.

The buyer will hopefully show up next weekend, for he wants to buy the Fisher stuff ($185 with the turntable), the 3ft speakers, an 8-track deck, and a Kenwood deck we've had for a week or two.

The speakers are listed for $50 (and are worth around $100-150), the Kenwood Deck for $50 as well, and the 8-track for $35. That makes it about $320 in equipment. Since he's buying so much, I'll knock it down to $270 and essentially give him the speakers or cassette deck for free lol.

Apart from that stuff, not much happened at the flea market. I sold some records, cassettes, CDs and I think 2 DVDs. One person bought a VHS tape? That money was the other guy's though. Oh well xD.

I can't say that I didn't miss my wonderful partner while on the trip. I actually brought along the stuffed animal they gave me (who's name is Greg) and snuggled with him both nights.

I was very happy to hear from them UwU.

They let me rant and I let them rant.

I honestly give them too much responsibility over me xD. I'm like, "Okay, I'm gonna do this. HOLD ME TO IT."

I know I can't hold myself to anything I personally say (this blog being the only exception apparently), but I listen to them pretty well I think 🤔. If they tell me, "No, you don't need that VCR," so long as it's not some weird specialty thing, like a worldwide VCR 🥵, I'll be like "Yeah, you rite bro."

So part way through the flea market day, I went over to Dollar Tree to buy some snack, but ended up looking through the CDs to see if there was anything good. I took photos of about 18 CDs and flipped through them online for the remainder of the flea market day.

I deleted the photos of the ones I didn't want and kept those that I liked. Surprisingly, I ended up buying 13 CDs there, but not before dropping them on the floor like the dumbass I am.

Also, sorry for all the nerd shit I spilled on your lap earlier. No one cares about amps and tuners xD.

Some editing VCRs are like "Holy shit that is SEXY. Look at those goddamn VU meters 🥵. And hhhh there are like 7 inputs on this thing and individual controls for left and right audio gain, not to mention Hi-Fi S-VHS recording. Hhhhhhhhhhh please gimme 😭. Why are you so expensive?"

It's 37 Everywhere by Punchline. Def give it a listen; it's pretty heccin good.

Another notable album I picked up was Page One by Steven Page. I very much like the first track, "A New Shore." It's quite catchy and he has a great voice imo.

Also at dollar tree, I bought a regular bag of Fieras and 2 bags of Fieras Sticks, which were marked down to 75¢/bag because they're expiring soon.

I honestly like the generic Dollar Tree version of Takis more than actual Takis. They're a lot more flavorful when it comes to the lime, but also hotter at the same time.

Don't get the hot nacho ones tho. Hot nacho? More like hot pile of shit.

I got home and started working on putting the CDs onto my computer, and then onto iBroadcast, but not without first adding The Music Man to my digital library, something I had neglected for a month or two. The CD had just been sitting there lol.

I also switched my digital file for "The Black Parade" to that of the uncensored CD, which I had purchased before I event started working over 2 months ago.

MAN I'M LAZY

I eventually get around to shit tho lol. I guess it's just a matter of priority.

What usually takes priority is digging through everything to find something that I forgot about but then remembered, making a mess in the process that I would then have to clean up, at least partially.

I think the album just ended. I've been writing for a while xD. I'ma start "I Made You Something" by The Island of the Misfit Toys.

I'll tell you where that album came from in a minute.

In the meantime, where was I?

I kinda lost my train of thought despite reading up to see where I was. Oh well. On I go.

I ate dinner and kept working on those CDs, eventually putting my clothes from the week into the washer.

I keep all of the album artworks in a big CD folder. That's almost full.

I wanna fill my entire CD changer. That's one of my big goals in life. Idk why, but I just wanna legitimately fill the entire thing.

My clothes are in the dryer now. I don't think I have the time (or energy) to fold them tonight. I'll leave that for tomorrow morning before work.

And God. Fucking. Damnit. I start school again on Wednesday. NOT looking forward to that, and neither are my 2 coworkers. We already have low enough staff, but only the two of them working is gonna be a pain in the ass.

I'll still work Saturdays.

I need to contact my guidance counselor to get out of the gym class I signed up for. I scheduled this shit before I found out I was trans, and I don't wanna deal with the fucking locker room situation 🙄 I have far more important matters.

Okay so anyway, the album I'm listening to came from a cassette. I bought this cassette a few months ago at the flea market along with a few others. The reason I bought them? They were all newer cassette releases from the 2010's, and they're all actually pretty good music from very indie bands.

Currently getting mad at iBroadcast's compression algorithm. It's unnaturally fucking anything over -10db up. Oh well, there's not really anything I can do about it.

I have like 13GB of music on my phone btw. That's about 3.5k songs on 268 albums.

I'm kind of an audiophile, but I'm too cheap to pay for a lossless service. Oh well.

They do actually have a lossless service on iBroadcast, but once again, too cheap.

Someone just sent me a friend request who legitimately posted that BLM and the democratic party are hate groups.

Anyway, yeah, I can, and do, convert music and video from analog formats to digital files in order for me to archive and listen to whenever and wherever I please. I've actually made a bit of a business out of it, but I don't get too much work from it. At least I'm not overloading myself xD.

I honestly have so much more to say, but I should probably go to sleep soon.

It depends but you can sometimes do this depending on the details. A federal case for example could be then tried on the state level. That is not double jeopardy. You can pressure your local counties to call for ballot audits today. Join the revolution.

If you're not living in this state, you should either go there or encourage your state to call up North Dakota. Core values & necessary skills

In my blog's branding section, I spoke about core values and those I deem to be top of my list. Core values make us who we are. It's what drives ambition and our creative thought process.

Accountability is high on my list of values/skills. Being accountable for the amount and quality of work we do is crucial. Often we dismiss our failures because we won't hold ourselves responsible. Though, at the other end of the spectrum, we more often than not, sing our praises. So holding yourself accountable as an individual or team unit, is just as crucial during the failures as it is during the success.

Whilst, teamwork is a very cliché term used with regards to employability, it remains a massive part of my core skill set. Being surrounded by team members is an excellent way to find a creative place in a project. I can then take those ideas and present for peer review. Having people to work with not only makes producing a big project easier. Still, it gives me a tremendous sense of satisfaction that like-minded creatives have come together to create something incredible.

Passion is a big part of what drives me. Music and composing is such a wonderful expression of artistry for me. Not just the music side of things, but I then took my love for music (and audio in general) regarding sound design. I began exploring the more intricate realms of audio. Each day my passions grow, but I NEVER wonder why I love what I do, not even on my worst days.

Respect is a skill I'm continually re-evaluating. I think it is undeniably essential to respect other people and their creative differences.

Continuous improvement is about always finding new and exciting ways to work. Technology changes exceptionally fast these days, and in audio production, the skillsets also have to change. Keeping up to date on industry techniques, skills, and methods will ensure I stay relevant to the expected work output. There are some general skills required to be a sound designer composer within the creative industries. However, some more specific skills are necessary if specialising in TV & film or games.

Creating, maintaining and backing of own original sound libraries.

Digital signal processing

Producing sound maps/ storyboards from scripts.

Mixing inside Digital Audio Workstations

Again, it was a learning curve starting with these new bits of kit, but I am genuinely pleased with how much this project turned out.
