Dire Diagnosis

A little something for @cirianne set in her Street Magic universe. A young Lilly Atwood is learning of her magical abilities, and the life of her and her family is about to change forever. This was a lot of fun to write, honestly, I love Gwen and the kids. Enjoy!

POV: Gwen

This hour, this hour right now, is the one chance at peace, quiet and relaxation that I am permitted before everyone returns home and delves the household into chaos.

I’m laid down on the sofa haphazardly, not quite caring about how one of my feet are hanging off the edge of the cushions. I’ve closed my eyes, simply enjoying the silence, not even focussing on a single thing outside of this deep breath I’ve taken after all my work today.

I’ve been for the groceries, I’ve done the laundry, I’ve cleaned the house and I’ve prepared dinner – all I need to do is heat it when Charles returns home later – but I need to pick Max up from kindergarten shortly, so I should enjoy this moment while it lasts. At least the twins can make their own way home alone. Is there anything I’ve forgotten to do so far?

No, Gweneth, absolutely not.

I should not think about this at all, I should be proud that I’ve got a little while to myself for now, I shouldn’t think about this. I need to relax -

Brrrrrrring, brrrrrrring, brrrrrrring!

I should have known it would be too good to last.

I groan in frustration as I make my way to the phone on the edge of the coffee table, briefly looking at the numbers. 12:04, Oakbank High School. I do a double take on the numbers before I accept the call, it’s entirely unusual for them to call home. Not rare – there have been occasions where I have been asked to pick up one of them when they’ve been sent home ill, or Peter has been acting up and needed me to speak with him and his tutors.

Peter, that’s what this is about. What has that boy done now?

Just a few weeks ago he got into a fight with some older students over something trivial, and I had to go speak to him there. He was sporting a split lip and a black eye, and I had to listen drowning in shame to the mother of the older boy insisting that my son apologise to hers. Peter had insisted that it wasn’t his fault. The older boy had been shoving him in the locker room and this time he ended up ripping his schoolbag, so he only did what he thought was a suitable punishment.

Peter’s a good boy, really, but the school could not simply overlook the fact that my son was the one to get violent here. I tried to stick up for him, I did, but the other boy’s mother would never let me get a word in edgeways. She was out for his blood, and I just sat there. I think I let him down that day, we had sat in silence in the car journey home and he simply locked himself away in his room when he got home. He wouldn’t listen to me when I tried to talk to him, and Charles didn’t fare much better when I told him what had happened.

I feel my chest tighten at the possibility of another incident with Peter, this time worse than before. I picked up the phone, slowly and carefully. “Hello, Atwood residence?”

“Good afternoon, I’m calling on behalf of Oakbank High School’s Nurse’s office, am I speaking to Gwen Atwood?”

The nurse. One of them is simply ill. I release the breath I had been holding in and continue to talk to them.

“Yes, can I help you?”

“I’m afraid we need you to come in, urgently, and collect Lilly. It’s serious, and we need you here as soon as possible.”

The fear that had been expunged from me came back to my lungs with a vengeance. I felt the blood drain from my face, and I was barely coherent. Something’s happened, something serious, Lilly has been hurt or injured or worse -

“What? Has something happened? Is she okay?”

“I’m afraid I cannot discuss it over the phone, how soon can you be here?”

I arrived at the school in record time, and was instantly led to the nurse’s office. There were three people inside, aside from my daughter, sat with her knees together and her hands clutching at the hem of her skirt, just above the knee. The moment I entered the room, she looked up at me – her face was pale, her green eyes wide with terror and tears streaming down her face.

The other three adults looked like the nurse, the Principal, and some other well-dressed person of importance, but I don’t know who he is.

She shot to her feet and wrapped her arms around my waist within seconds. “Mom,” her voice was raspy and weak, but she looked physically okay. I had expected her to be covered in cuts or bruises or blood or a sick combination of all three, but the only thing wrong with her here that I can see is how upset she is.

“What’s happened? Are you alright, Lilly?”

“I’m afraid, Mrs Atwood, that your daughter will not be attending our school anymore.” The Principal stated matter-of-factly. “Effective immediately.”

All of the air was sucked out of my lungs the moment he said that. Lilly, being expelled? No, absolutely not. I can’t believe this. She’s never even so much as had detention before. She’s a straight-A student, she works hard and tries hard and has good relations with her teachers, just what is going on here?

“What do you mean? Please tell me, what’s happened?”

The nurse was the next one to speak up, her normally gentle voice and calm demeanour suddenly filled with seriousness and… somehow, a little cold.

“You’re aware that the Council requires all students to undergo mandatory regular blood tests four times a year?” I nodded slowly in response. “Ma’am, your daughter is affiliated with magic. It’s not showing yet, but she will do in the next few months, and I’m afraid that the school policy on the matter is removal from public school.”

I look down at my daughter, who is trembling like a leaf and clutching at my coat, not looking at me directly, before I finally found my voice.

“Lilly? No, no that’s not right. How, why, why would it just be Lilly? She has a twin brother, surely he’d be…”

“A lot of progress has been made on the discovery of magic in young people, Mrs Atwood, but I’m afraid that the fact remains that we don’t know everything. Your son simply doesn’t show any signs of magic, we’ve even tested him twice with another sample to be safe. Your son shows no signs of magic at all.”

The person beside the Principal, the well-dressed one, spoke this time. “The decision stands, Mrs Atwood. I’m here to explain what happens now, because she cannot continue her education here, for her safety and the safety of others.”

Lilly. A mage, I can’t believe this, I honestly wish I was dealing with Peter’s disciplinary issues right now. I wish he had been in another fight. I would rather face that than face this.

Mages are dangerous, they’re nobodies, they’re evil things who only seek to cause harm, that’s why it’s so important to educate them.

But not Lilly, Lilly is and always has been a good girl, she doesn’t deserve this!

“You can’t, please, she’s just a young girl –“

“They all are, ma’am, but you have to understand that we need to ensure she doesn’t harm herself or others,” they reached into their suit pocket and handed me a card, “as you can see, I am a liaison for the Council in the Discovery of Mages. I’m here to make sure her transition is as smooth as possible for the both of you.”

“How… it can’t be true…”

“I’m sorry, ma’am. I’ve had this same conversation with hundreds of mothers like yourself, and as rare as magic is, it’s real and it has awakened in your daughter. You understand that we cannot simply ignore this, it has to be reported.”

“Are you mad at me?”

Lilly broke the silence first, looking at me with her wide emerald eyes. Her voice had wavered, she sounded like she was going to cry, I caught that tremble as she ended her question.

“Of course not,” I didn’t look at her, mainly because I was still driving. I couldn’t take my eyes off the road for too long, “why would you think that?”

“Because it’s all my fault.”

“No, sweetie, of course it’s not your fault –“

“It is, Mom! I’m, I’m just like those monsters that keep making trouble. I’m just like them!”

“Lilly –“

“Dad always said he hated what mages are, they’re troublemakers and they need controlling and punishing for their crimes. Dad’s gonna kill me!”

I couldn’t take this anymore. Her sobs were breaking my heart. I punched on the hazard lights and pulled into the side of the road, slowing to a halt and turning to my daughter, leaning over the gearbox and handbrake to pull her close to me.

She’s crying into my shirt so heavily, she sounds so utterly terrified that I can feel her shaking as she sobs into me – I feel like I’m a truly terrible mother. There’s nothing I can do to stop what will happen to her soon – she’ll be taken away to one of the academies for her education, and the thought of her leaving home like this is truly awful to think about. I

“Listen to me, Lilly, I love you so much, and none of this is your fault. Do you understand?” I asked through my own tears, wiping them away quickly with my fingers. “Your father loves you, and you know he does. He is not going to kill you for this, because he knows you’re not like the others.”

“I’ve, I – I’ve heard th-things, M-Mom…” she mumbled, “ab-out the acad-demies…”

“They’re just rumours, Lilly,” I tried to sound reassuring, but I knew that the weakness in my voice did nothing to establish confidence in my daughter, “you’ll see Uncle Jason when you’re there though, you know it’s his job to look after the students.”

“But what if, if they’re not rumours, Mom? What if they’re real?”

I didn’t have an answer to that, and I couldn’t even do anything more to reassure her. We just sat there in the car for a while, and I wanted to keep her there forever, to not make her go through such an ordeal.

But I must.

Six years after Rey's first Christmas with Ben and his family, unexpected gifts abound at the annual Organa-Solo-Skywalker(-Kenobi?) Christmas celebration.

Featuring: Organa-Solo-Skywalker shenanigans, a ton of major surprises, and fluff. Again with the fluff. It's always the damn fluff.

A heavy arm slung across her middle. Warm breath tickling the shell of her ear. The barely discernible rise and fall of a chest pressed against her back.

The day begins much like any other, and it takes Rey a while to remember that this is the last Christmas Eve she and Ben will ever spend in this apartment of theirs, where they met and fell in love and built a life together.

“Hey,” Ben mumbles when she turns slightly to look at him, and his fingers instinctively curl around her waist to keep her near. “What time is it?”

Rey reaches blindly for her phone on the nightstand, unwilling to tear her eyes away from the sight of Ben trying to blink the sleep out of his eyes. He’d come to bed late last night, something about catching up on work emails and making sure they’ve got everything they need for the trip. By the time Rey felt him crawl into bed, it must’ve been at least two in the morning.

It’s seven now, a whole hour before their alarm is set to go off. She tells Ben as much and whispers for him to go back to sleep, sighs happily when he pulls her closer to his chest and nuzzles into the curve of her neck before he lets sleep reclaim him.

She doesn’t take her own advice, chooses instead to catalog every little detail about their room. It’s not the room they started out in – they’d taken over the master bedroom a few years ago when Finn and Poe moved out – but over the years it’s turned into Rey’s favorite place in the world. Nothing bad ever happens in this room; she doesn’t allow it to, even has a rule about them resolving a fight before they can set foot into this space. It’s the safest place in the world to her, and soon she’ll be leaving it – and their home and her job and this city – behind for the great unknown.

Ben stirs behind her, tightens his grip on her and makes a tiny sound of contentment in the back of his throat before he settles back into sleep. He’s warm and comforting and home, and Rey knows that’ll never change no matter where they live, no matter what life-changing surprise life has in store for them.

Ben seems a little jumpy over breakfast, but he waves off her concern and blames it on a combination of sleep-deprivation and dreading whatever awaits them in Alderaan. It’s Leia’s first Christmas since stepping down as Senator, and there’s a distinct possibility she might’ve gone overboard with the planning now that she has the time to oversee every last detail.

They spend most of the three-hour drive coming up with increasingly outlandish predictions for what they’ll find at the Organa mansion, and by the time Rey suggests the possibility of Leia having mounted a sleigh along with a dozen reindeer on the roof, Ben seems back to his normal self.

He’s smiling even as he keeps his eyes on the road, the corners of his eyes crinkling in that way she’s grown so fond of. His shoulders shake with restrained laughter, and when they roll to a stop at a red light he shakes his head at Rey’s ridiculousness and takes her hand over the gearbox to press a kiss to the inside of her wrist.

Now would be a good time.

Instead Rey beams back at him, surges forward to give him a peck on the cheek before she points out the now-green light. “Floor it, Solo,” she jokingly commands, and Ben uses his free hand to salute her with a chuckled aye aye, ma’am.

The car is filled with laughter and silliness and painfully off-key Christmas carols for the entirety of their drive through Takodana, but Rey observes a change in Ben as soon as they drive into Alderaan. He starts tapping his fingers against the steering wheel, and she catches him surreptitiously patting down his left pocket at least three times, as if checking for his keys or phone. When they take an unfamiliar route, she assumes he must be too busy thinking about whatever it is that’s troubling him to realize that he’s made a mistake.

“Babe, you missed the turn.”

Ben jumps. The Silencer is pretty spacious, but his sudden movement still brings his head dangerously close to the roof of the car. “Um, actually, I didn’t,” he tells her without meeting her eye, his hand wrapped around the wheel in a white-knuckled grip. “We’re making a quick detour.”

He guides them onto a road that cuts through the forest, one that Rey knows leads to the snow-capped mountains behind the Organa mansion. In an effort to ease the tension, she narrows her eyes at Ben and asks, “Benjamin Organa-Solo, is this the part where you take me deep into the forest and hide my body?”

She relaxes when Ben laughs and turns to her with a fond smile. “Sure, the past eight years have all been a part of my elaborate plan to kill you.”

“I know it’s a joke,” Rey tells him, “but you are exactly the kind of person who would come up with an eight-year plan to commit the perfect murder.”

Ben frowns without looking at her, paying close attention to the road as snowy gravel gives way to frozen-over dirt. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“That you’re meticulous and detail-orientated and the slightest bit anal-retentive, and I love you for it,” she shrugs.

“Thanks, sweetheart,” Ben mutters wryly as they slowly come to a stop just a few feet away from a thicket of trees, where the dirt road ends and the snowy forest begins. “All right, we’re here.”

Here is the middle of nowhere, and Rey is tempted to make the murder joke again. But then Ben’s carefully getting out of the car and making his way over to her side, and when he opens her door it’s like a veil of calm has descended upon him. He offers her his hand and a bright, assuring smile, and so she lets him lead her into the forest.

Ben keeps his left hand in his pocket as they walk, and uses his shoulder to push aside some low-hanging branches before he gently tugs Rey into a familiar clearing.

It’s the lake behind the house, the one they sometimes walk to when they’re in need of a break from his family. The ice is never thick enough to walk on, but the thin layer of frost combined with the Alderaanian winter sun always makes for the most dazzling sight, a thousand pinpricks of light cutting through the thin layer of ice to bounce off the water underneath.

“It’s the lake,” Rey hears herself saying somewhat unnecessarily, and Ben just gives her a warm smile before he pulls her along to the edge of the lake. It’s beautiful and calming, and any other time Rey would’ve assumed they’re just here for a moment of peace before they get pulled into the madness that is the Organa-Skywalker-Solo holiday celebration.

But Ben’s left hand is still in his pocket, and he’s looking at her like she’s the true miracle here amidst this breathtaking show of Mother Nature’s beauty.

“Ben,” Rey whispers, her heart in her throat as the pieces fall into place. “Why are we here?”

“A month from now, you and I are going to leave behind everything we know to start a new life in Naboo,” he reminds her. “And I know that as excited as you are about this, you’re also terrified and sad to leave the only place that’s ever felt like home to you.”

Guilt begins to pool in her stomach, but Ben is so gentle and understanding and Ben about it that she doesn’t even bother denying it, just takes a deep breath and nods.

“I’m a little scared and sad too, Rey,” Ben admits, his fingers giving hers a reassuring squeeze. “Coruscant is… every single chapter of our story, so far, and it’s not going to be easy to leave that behind. But I thought maybe if we give this chapter of our lives a proper last page, the kind it deserves, then… maybe it’ll be easier to move forward and look to the future. Because at the end of the day, that’s what this is all about. It’s not an ending, it’s a new beginning for us, for our future together.”

Ben takes one step back, finally pulls his hand out of his pocket along with a tiny velvet drawstring pouch. He smiles when Rey drops his hand to bring both of hers to cover her mouth, and everything takes on a dreamlike-haze as she watches him get down on one knee.

They’ve discussed this before – of course they have, after six years together. But they’ve always been so casual about it that Rey sort of thought it would happen over breakfast one morning, or while they’re on the couch watching TV. He’d burn the French toast because he was distracted by her or she’d turn around to smile at him during a commercial break, and they’d share a moment of quiet understanding before one of them gathered the courage to say those two little words, short and sweet and to the point.

She’s dreamed of it, waited for the moment to come, fallen in love with the quiet elegance of the idea. But this, this is beautiful and perfect and them too.

On one knee – in jeans, in the snow -, Ben presents her with a ring she recognizes from pictures of his grandparents and smiles at her, that calm, assured smile from earlier, the one that says this is perfectly natural and there’s nothing to be nervous about and this is exactly where we’re meant to be.

“I know we’re starting our new lives in just a month, but I’ve waited eight years for us to build a future together, Rey, and you know I’m not the most patient of men,” they laugh and she cries and Ben’s smile grows the slightest bit wobbly. “So I’d like to start the rest of our life together today, if that’s okay with you. I’d like to promise you a lifetime of lazy mornings no matter where we are, an eternity together no matter where life takes us.”

Later, Ben will tell her that his leg started cramping up before he could pop the question. After, Rey will admit that the reason for her extra-loud sniff was to prevent her nose from running. But for now, everything about this moment is perfect. Even the persistent voice that’s been screaming tell him tell him tell him in the back of her head for the past three days falls silent as Ben finally asks:

“Rey, will you marry me?”

“You’re forty minutes late,” Leia tells them in lieu of a greeting when she opens the door to find Rey and Ben on her front porch. They’re hand-in-hand and smiling like fools and glowing, and she just sighs and shakes her head at them, begins to say, “Don’t tell me you’re late because you two were fooling around in the car–”

“Hi, Leia,” Rey says with a tiny wave of her left hand, and the older woman gasps as her hand shoots out to grab Rey’s.

Leia’s whole face lights up as she spots the ring on Rey’s finger, and she turns to Ben with the biggest smile on her face. “You didn’t.”

Ben grins. “I did.”

“Han!” she hollers into the house without looking away from the young couple. “Han, get your ass here right now!”

In the minute it takes for Han to stomp to the front door, Leia pulls them each into a hug, then a group hug, and Rey swears her eyes have grown shiny with tears but she’ll never accuse the great Senator Organa of getting weepy just because her son’s engaged.

Engaged. She and Ben are engaged.

Han appears at the door with his customary scowl, which quickly turns into a proud smirk once he realizes what’s going on.

“So you finally did it, huh?” he asks Ben, reaching out to clap his son on the shoulder. “Good for you, kid. And welcome to the family, Rey. Though god knows you’ll probably live to regret it.”

Leia turns to her husband with narrowed eyes. “You’re not surprised. Why aren’t you surprised?”

“The kid had to get advice somewhere, didn’t he?” Han shrugs, crossing his arms as he leans against the doorway.

“Advice?” Leia echoes incredulously. “You’ve never even proposed to anyone! I did,” she tells Ben and Rey almost defensively. “I woke up to find him building a crib one morning, and I told him this might be the pregnancy hormones talking, but I think we should get married.”

“And so we did,” Han says with a rare smile as he reaches out to wrap an arm around Leia’s waist and pull her close. “But for the record, I was going to – so it counts. Had a ring and a plan and everything,” he mutters.

Leia snaps her head around, as if this is news to her. Knowing Han, it very well could be. “A plan? Really? Well, let’s hear it then.”

Ben shakes his head at his parents as they get swept away in their own little world of bickering. “Think that’ll be us in thirty years?” he whispers to Rey as Han steers Leia into the house with a hand on her lower back even as they continue to argue.

He sounds half-amused and half-terrified of the prospect, but Rey… Rey hears us in thirty years and falls in love with the thought of it.

Coming back to this 'verse makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I hope reading this makes you guys feel the same way!

HOLDING YOU!

It all started in kindergarten, Stiles could remember the first time she took his hand in hers. They had been playing on the playground, as their teacher told them to start finishing up and getting into pairs of two, so they could go back inside the center. Usually, his best friend Scott would have been there to hold his hand, but this afternoon Scott had already gone home, because of his dentist appointment. That left Stiles standing alone at the side, while all the other kindergarten children found their best friend. Although he was only four at the time, he could remember feeling jealous, as somebody suddenly took his hand and taking him by surprise. "Is this okay?" Malia had asked. Normally, he would have told her that it was not okay because girls were ‘Yikes’ at that time, but something about her made him only nod. Nowadays, Stiles insists that he instantly fell in love with her, even though it took them awhile to become actual friends.

In elementary school, they finally became close friends, and she still often held his hand. For example: every time they almost missed their bus home, she reached for his hand so she could drag him along. Or when she was afraid of the dark, she automatically took his hand to feel safe. It happened a lot, but there was this one moment, which will be forever stuck in his head. It had been the day of his Mother's funeral and he had felt like shit. He wasn’t able to move and stayed lying in his bed until Scott and Malia entered his room. Feeling dead on the inside and outside, Stiles didn’t want to stand up, he nearly screamed at them for being here and not letting him be. It only was Malia's soft touch, as she took his hand that made him strong enough to get dressed and leave his room. While having his best friend on his left side and knowing that would catch him if he would fall, Malia was on his right holding his hand. Although it’s been years since his mother died and the funeral took place, Stiles still could feel the touch on his skin. It hadn’t been much, but everything he had needed at that very moment. Knowing that his best friends were there with and for him, he had everything to survive his tragic loss.

Another time when holding Malia's hand meant everything to Stiles, it was the moment when he told her that he was in love with her. They were fifteen years old at the time and Stiles had known for a few months by then, that he wanted to be with her, but being all shy and insecure he couldn’t tell her. Only when they were at a party and stupid Jackson Whittemore was flirting with Malia, Stiles knew that he had to do something. Drinking one horrible shot of cheap and awful tasting alcohol, he found the courage to walk over to that douchebag and the girl of his dreams. "Sorry to interrupt… well, I’m not really sorry,” he had started while watching Malia’s smile fading.

"Stiles… that’s rude,” was the only thing the dark-haired girl said before apologizing to Jackson.

"Yeah, I know, but I need to talk to you,” Stiles insisted.

"I’m pretty sure it can wait,” Malia said, giving him that one special look, which told him that his timing was awful.

"No, it can’t. It’s important,” he looked her right into the eyes. "Please, Mal." He knew that calling her this would help. She secretly loved it when he called her Mal and he wasn’t afraid of shamelessly using this information. Letting out a soft sigh, she excused herself and followed Stiles into the backyard.

"What’s wrong? Are you okay?” She instantly asked when they were alone.

"Yes", he answered, not able looking at her. "I mean no. I don’t know."

"Stiles, you wanted to talk… so talk…,” he had heard her concern, but also that she started to get mad. "I was having a nice conversation before you interrupted.”

"Ha, nice conversation. He was just trying to get you laid,” he had sounded angry, although he regretted those words instantly after saying them.

"What the hell?" Malia exclaimed.

"Look, I’m sorry. I’m sorry… I… damn it." Stiles stuttered.

"Okay, this is ridiculous. I’m going back inside and you can come talk to me when you’re back to being normal,” she started to walk off, as Stiles stopped thinking and reached for her hand. Pulling her back and into his arms, he sealed their lips in a soft, but intense kiss. Not really knowing what was happening, Malia kissed him back, letting out a small sigh. It took them nearly a minute to stop and separate, and then about another minute to collect their thoughts.

"Stiles, I…", she tried to say something and failed.

"I’m sorry. It was not okay to interrupt you, but the truth is… I’m jealous,” he said softly. "Watching you talk to other guys, makes me very jealous. Particularly when it’s Jackson. I couldn’t….." He paused, it was time to be brave. "I couldn’t live with the fact of him kissing you or… being your boyfriend. Especially when it’s my dream to be your boyfriend." There. It had been said.

"Stiles, what… I don’t understand. I…"

"I love you,” he nearly shouted. "I’m sorry… sorry, I didn’t want to shout. I just… puh", he took a deep breath. "I’m in love with you. I was scared of telling you because I’m afraid of losing you and our friendship. But…” he took her hand into his while looking down and playing with her fingers. "But losing you to that douchebag without saying anything… I couldn’t forgive myself. So I thought now or never and here I am. Making an idiot out of myself!” He wasn’t able to say anything more since Malia pulled him back into a kiss; giving him soft kisses, she whispered a small “finally” and “I have been waiting for forever,” before looking up to him and smiling happily.

"I’m in love with you too,” she confessed. "But I was pretty sure, that you wouldn’t like me like that, so I didn’t say anything."

"What are you crazy? I like you,” she started, “I like you a lot,” still holding her hand, he brought it to his mouth and kissed her knuckles. God, holding her like this meant everything to Stiles. "So, can I call you my girlfriend now?" He let her see a very cheeky smile.

"Idiot", she laughed, as she pulled him back into another kiss. They spent time all by themselves, sharing cute kisses and enjoying the new label of being boyfriend and girlfriend, they then left for Stiles’s house, while holding hands and being happy. After that, a lot of different situations followed in which holding hands felt so freaking good. He loved thinking about their first time, which was more than romantic and passionate. It had felt so right kissing her and holding her hand while being one. It was a cute moment when he held her hand while showing her how to handle Roscoe's gearbox and how to drive. It was a fantastic moment when he reached for her hand while walking on stage as they announced her as Prom queen at their senior year. When moving to Washington D.C and they ran into their first apartment together, it felt absolutely right and like home, especially when he got to hold her hand.

Every single important moment with Malia had so much meaning. Every single kiss, every smile, every fight and every single touch meant something to Stiles and he knew that all of his feelings had started right the second she first took his hand in hers. It all started with a little touch and he knew that he wanted to spend his life with her. One night when Malia came home from work, he already waiting in their living room, surrounded by hundreds of candles and red roses, he stood there, while she came in the surprise written all over her face. "Stiles, what…this looks amazing", smiling widely, she moved closer.

"Hey Baby,” he said softly while reaching out to her and pulling her even closer. "You like it?"

"I love it, but I don’t know… did I forget an anniversary?" She asked.

"No, you didn’t,” he smiled. "Do you remember that day, when we first spoke?"

"You mean in kindergarten? Of course! Why are you asking?" Malia questioned, confused.

"Do you remember, why we started to talk and why we became friends?"

"I… you were alone and I didn’t have any friends. And you were always funny and nice to me, so I came over and took your hand. That’s how I remember it,” she beamed while remembering. Only thinking about Stiles made her small little heart go crazy.

"Exactly,” he nodded. "On that day you took my hand and never let go. You took my hand and all of my heart as well. Every single day since that glorious afternoon on that magical playground…” Malia snorted, “...you made my life worth living and a better person out of me. You mean everything to me, you’re my world. You’re there when I need you the most and you make me smile when I don’t even want to. You know how to handle my craziness and your patient when it comes to me and my addiction to investigate. I love you, Mal and I’ve known, ever since you held my hand on that special day in kindergarten, that you’re the one for me. You’re my sunshine on rainy days and my heart. And I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So…" with those words, he got down on one knee. While looking up at her, he pulled out a ring, he held it up with one hand and offering her his free one, he smiled as he spoke. "Malia Elizabeth Tate, will you make me the happiest guy on this planet and take my hand? For the rest of our lives? Will you marry me?" Waiting with anticipation, he saw a few happy tears falling down her cheeks. Not able to say anything, Malia nodded before laughing happily and taking his hand. She didn’t care for the ring, although it was a bonus. She just wanted to hold his hand, like the day he described a few seconds ago. Pulling him up, she placed a soft kiss on his lips, while holding him tight. Stiles, at this very moment, was as happy as hell, he couldn’t believe that he now was engaged to Malia Tate. He was happy he found her and having her in his life.

As he slipped the ring on her finger, he couldn’t stop thinking about one thing: from now on and for the rest of their lives, he could hold her hand and that was everything he could ever need.

I have a question regarding car insurance. I'm 29 years old. I've been in 3 car accidents but was not at fault for any of them (2 of the times my car was sitting still! lol) and I've never gotten a ticket for any of those accidents. I used to have insurance through State Farm, full coverage for a 2004 Jeep Liberty that cost 50-60 a month in upstate NY. While driving to NYC one winter I got a speeding ticket, my first ticket ever! I was going I think 82(?) in a 65. This was just before I moved to NYC, and because I got the ticket in a podunk little county I was driving through I had no idea what the name was, the ticket flew out my door and I lost it. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance. I know it will be a lot more here then what I used to pay, and in addition I now have a suspension that wasn't there before. Before the story: I don't own the song, or the characters except Vivian Song: Meant to Be you'd from the Heathers Musical Characters: Gearbox and 2K Enjoy~ I hid in a small room. My back against the door trying to keep Jack from entering. He banged loudly on the door that separated us. "Come on baby all is forgiven!" I shuddered as I felt his hand band against the door once again. "Come on get dressed you're my date to sanctuary's welcoming party tonight!" My eyes widen. 'Welcoming party? He doesn't mean.....oh no.." He banged on the door once more the door vibrates slightly. "You threw me away like I was trash" he growled through gritted teeth. "Buuut~ Then it hit me! What if Sanctuary went away altogether?! Genius right kitten !' I hugged my knees closer to myself as if they were gonna be separated from me. 'So many deaths.....because of me....' " I mean it was those ASSHOLES who have been keeping you away from me!" "They haven't done anything wrong Jack!" I yelled back my voice trembling from fear. "It was all my fault not theirs!" "SEE!" He banged on then door once more "those bandits made you blind Vivian! Those BANDITS completly messed up your mind!" His breath was ragged at first due to anger but it eventually calmed down, and his voiced softened. "But don't worry Pumpkin I'll save you. I'll make sure you don't end up like them." Then he was silent and I though he left or tried to find a new way in till I felt a light thunk against the door. "You know Vivian after you left me alone on Helios I completely fell apart. Can you believe that? Me! The CEO of Hyperion fell apart because of some girl!" He laughed "its kinda funny actually but, true. After I learned that you left I yelled and punched the walls" He then began banging on the door again. After three or four hits he stopp and tried to control his breathing. "You know what I learned while you were away?" He stopped for a minute probably waiting for a response which I wasn't giving him. "I learned that you completely opened my heart! Can you believe that kitten! All the shit they say about love is all true!" I closed my eyes tightly. 'I don't believe him. Not a single bit i mean look at what he did to Angel! His own flesh and blood!' "So you what that means? What ALL this means?! It means I built a bomb! A bomb to get rid of those bandits at sanctuary and make Pandora a better place for us!" Tears began to spring up in my eyes 'So many innocent people are gonna die....because of me....' "Honey let's make sure they never mess with us again. Cause you know I was meant to be yours.....we were meant to be one..." He got quiet once again the spoke once more "Please don't give up on me now Vivian. I mean remember when we were taking out those bandit camps? Come on let's just finish what we started! I was mean to be-" "No Jack! I don't want to live like that again!" He bang on the door with more force this time. "Maybe you'll think differently when I finally take down that bandit camp!" I locked the door and moved away from it. I didn't want to be near it any more. As I moved away he began talking about how he was gonna cover it up to make him seem like the hero he truly is and how Pandora might finally be tame. "Hell kitten we could stay up in Helios watch it all happen and cuddle as the smoke rises!" I had to think of something anything! 'If this my fault....and I take my self out of the equation....then...I have a plan!' "Come on Vivian you know I was meant to be yours no one else! We were meant to be one!" 'Just a couple more touches before he comes in!' "I can't take it alone! Let's just finish this please Vivian!" 'Almost done aaaaaannnnnddddd' "GOD DAMN IT VIVIAN! You were mean to be mine and you know it! I mean no one can please you like I can!" ~Jacks p.o.v~ "IM ALL THAT YOU NEED AND YOU KNOW IT!" I jiggled the door knob 'great she locked the f****** thing' I took a deep breath and looked at the door the separated us. "How could you Vivian.....you cut me open then just left me to bleed" I placed my hand on the door "Who is really the bad guy here huh?" I stopped hoping she would open the door or respond but I didn't hear anything from her side. I growled "VIVIAN!" I try the door once again "pumpkin open the door please" no response I sighed "Can we not fight any more please? I know you're scared here so let's just go home please?" Still nothing and I was growing impacient "If you don't open this door right now I'm gonna kick it down!" One....two.....F*** IT! I kicked the door and in the middle of the empty room was Vivian....my Vivian....hanging....I fell to my knees "Oh god Vivian....please...don't do this to me kitten...." She still swung slight not a sound coming out of her. "Please don't leave me alone...you were all I could trust..." I looked down at the old wooden floor borders. "I can't do this alone." This is all THEIR fault. THEY did this to her! "But I will if I must! I stood up and straightened myself. Church Of MO 2003 Victory Vegas With the unfortunate news of Polaris shutting down Victory Motorcycles, it only seemed right for this week’s Church feature to be about Victory. Oddly, despite Victory’s beginnings in 1997, it took a few years – and a new millennia – for MO to get its hands on one. We’ve featured some of those models already in past Church features, so for this week we’re going with the oldest Victory review we have yet to showcase: the 2003 Victory Vegas. Ridden and written by Eric Bass, sit back, relax, and enjoy this early road test review of what might become a collector’s item in 20 years. Oh, and for more pictures, be sure to visit the photo gallery. 2003 Victory Vegas Viva (fewer) Lost Wages! By Eric Bass Apr. 20, 2003 Aaaaah Las Vegas! Actually, nobody who lives within striking distance really calls it that. It sounds too ordinary, like Santa Monica or El Monte. The Spanish dictionary I used translates Las Vegas to mean “the fertile plains”, which if accurate, is a hysterical misnomer, as it is by no means fertile nor plain. To those of us well acquainted with Beelzebub’s playground, we know it as Sin City, Lost Wages, Land of the One-Armed Bandit, or simply, Vegas (Baby, Vegas!). And while every man enters town with dreams of Victory, they are usually left trampled underfoot along with the cigarette butts and ATM withdrawal slips. But every now and then . . . Any bike worthy of the name Vegas, needs to conjure a feeling of rakish adventure, “you Da’ That’s right. They have women in there who show off their bosoms. LA is wild, man. With a mighty gnashing of gears Eric `Krav Maga’ Bass sets out to meet kindred spirits. Or, chicks… Here, the illusion of the Vegas in a shimmering pool is somewhat diluted by the parking stripes, but we are MO. There’s only one four-pot Brembo in front, but it’s a good one. Man” swagger, and a sense that something cool is gonna happen . . . tonight! And for the most part, Victory succeeds, and does so at a reasonable price point ($14,999 MSRP) relative to (cough) other American motorcycle companies. Compared to their Classic Cruiser based around the same power plant, the Vegas has been mildly stretched (from 94″ length to 96.3″) and slammed (from 28.3″ seat height to 26.5″). The rear tire (170 60VB/18 Dunlop K591 Elite SP) got fatter (from 3.5″ rims to 4.5″) and the front wheel got taller (from 16″ to 21″) and skinnier (from 3″ rims to 2.15″). Stylistically, the fingerprints of design partners Arlen and Cory Ness are all over this bike, giving it a classic but custom look right off the showroom floor. The oil/air-cooled 50 degree, 92ci (1507cc) Freedom V-twin is split by a V-shaped badge replete with faux bullet-hole indents. This embellishment is repeated on the ends of the handlebar grips. A teardrop shaped, flush-mounted, LED tail light graces the rear fender. The stretched and flowing gas tank dovetails to meet the seat, which has been executed with a chopper-influenced minimalism while refusing to sacrifice comfort. The staggered slash-cut dual exhaust delivers a satisfying note without being obnoxious. I would probably upgrade mine to something obnoxious, but that’s just my personality defect. To summarize, the “a la carte” Vegas is served with the kind of secret sauce typically only found in a . . . well, in an Arlen Ness catalog. The ergos are spot-on and had everyone smiling, from 6’2″ Sean, to 5’9″ moi, to the diminuitive JohnnyB. (Just kidding JB, please don’t bite me on the knee!) The pegs look farther forward than they really are, and the handlebars and seat all collaborate to create a casually kicked back body position that felt universally comfy to a challenging trichotomy of testers. The pegs are low though and will drag around a 90 degree turn if you get too sassy with it, slip into racer mode, and go for a deep-braking approach to the apex. Even the pillion shows consideration for the needs of your sidekick. The seat is fairly plush and slants toward the rider rather than off the back of the fender. Gee what a radical concept! When the wheels start turning, the Vegas offers 70 hp to shove its 615 lbs of dry weight down the highway. After being so recently spoiled by the “performance cruiser” stars while conducting our V-Rod/Warrior comparo, I was braced for disappointment when I opened up the Vegas’ throttle. But for a bike in its class, it moves when you goose it, and Brembo 300 mm floating rotor brakes bring it to a halt with total confidence. The power is administered via a fiberglass-reinforced belt drive, and managed by a 5-speed constant mesh transmission that has a foot feel somewhere in between a metric “click” and an H-D “clunk”. The Vegas’ suspension does an above average job of absorbing pavement errata without incident. In fact, I gave the shocks an impromptu test by intentionally guiding the bike over a mild pothole under fairly hard braking, and squeezed only a tiny chirp out of the front wheel. My sole complaint would have to be that the Vegas likes to whistle while it works. The whirring of overhead cams was a minor aural irritation to me, but went un-noticed by the full-face clad JB and Sean. As MO’s lonely and embattled defender of the steel stallion, I had to retrieve my jaw from my boot tops when Sean and JB actually offered unsolicited praise for the Vegas. Typically, cruiser conversations around here rapidly devolve into a verbal rat-packing by the Hamilton-Burns-Alexander axis of evil, until I feel like Frodo Baggins fighting off a horde of raging Orcs. But apparently the Vegas hath charms to soothe the savage Power Ranger. Phew! That beautiful tank holds 4.5 gallons of fuel before it sweeps back to a seat only 26 inches high. Nice, no? Each cylinder displaces 751cc. You can change the final drive belt without removing the swingarm. Or you can pay someone. While our communal grins surely were derived in part from the bike’s style and stance, the Vegas delivers better than expected performance for a “pure cruiser”. It really does strike a nice balance between form and function, and considering the head start provided by the Nesses, the bike could achieve a truly custom look with very little additional investment. A few aftermarket flourishes and some custom paint and this bike could look as good as a $30,000 machine and probably ride better at just over half the price. Nice job Victory. You may just ruin Lost Wages bad reputation! Tell me More… –John B. Contrary to popular opinion, I harbor no ill will toward that category of dungheaps generally referred to as “cruisers.” All I know is when I ride them, more often than not, instead of the usual euphoria I feel upon hopping on a cool bike after a dull day at the office or a broken heart or whatever, I get kind of bummed out at the lack of agility combined with physical discomfort. Most cruisers just don’t fit me. Take the Yamaha Warrior. I’d heard so many good things about it, I was all set to hop on the bandwagon. In fact I do like most of that bike, but not as much as I would if it didn’t have a handlebar designed for an orangutan. Easy enough to fix, true, but easy things like that tend to take on complicated forms at MO. Most other cruisers put the footpegs too far forward, leaving your tailbone to act as rear suspension. A cruiser with decent ergoes, I’m all over it–the Road King I can deal with, for instance. In general, though, the really stylized cruisers go for form over function, and I’m more a function first motorcycle guy–I got no time to “cruise;” I always have to be somewhere. Which leads me to say, Wow, this Vegas is the first of its ilk I enjoy riding. Excellent throttle response from nicely programmed injection, good power, a positive, short-throw gearbox, crisp controls and a tightly bolted-together feel throughout, ergoes that work for me, pretty good suspension, really good brakes and swoopy looks that steer clear of self-parody. Too bad Victory got off on the wrong foot a few years ago and soiled itself; it takes a while for the stigma to wear off, but conversations with Polaris people, and riding this bike, lead me to believe Victory has turned the corner. They’ve kicked junior engineers upstairs, brought in not only Ness but also some new Art Center people, spanned the globe to find a manufacturer to produce the Vegas gas tank… in short, they’re kicking free of the old made-in-America mentality and joining the global economy to produce a motorcycle which looks more Italian than American, executionwise. Even more interesting, Victory tells us that the Vegas is only one of a bunch of new models scheduled for launch, at the rate of one or two a year, between now and 2008. Oooh, what’s next?
