I Hate You, I Love You, Chapter 116

Chapter Summary - Danielle arrives home with Mac to an empty house, but it is not long before her two pups meet.

Danielle sighed, the day had been long, but Mac rubbing his muzzle against her as she sat in the trailer made her feel better. She checked her phone and smiled. She brought up Tom’s number and pressed call.

‘Hello, Ms Hughes, how are you this evening?’ His voice all but purred at her.

‘Very well,’ Her tone was warm and playful. ‘But I fear I have a confession to make.’

‘I am listening.’

‘I have someone with his head on my lap at the moment.’

‘And we only apart with a fortnight, Darling, why must you hurt me so?’

‘Yes, but in all fairness, he has had my love for the past few years and has returned it longer than you have.’

‘I feel like I should be challenging him to a duel.’ Tom chuckled.

‘He would win.’

‘He cannot hold a gun, or a sword for that matter, he has no thumbs. I think.’

‘Dewclaws are their versions of thumbs.’

‘I read before that people remove them.’

‘Yes, no licensed vet in Ireland or Britain will do it though, they can be struck off for it if it is not needed.’ She explained. ‘How is our little boy?’

‘He is great. Did you get my picture?’

‘I did. Did he cry in the car?’

‘A little. Though I did something bold.’

‘Tell me.’

I may have left him sleep with Poppy at night.’

‘I can’t blame you.’

‘It’s not that bad, is it?’

‘More for Poppy than Bobby.’

‘Why?’

‘Well, he is fully vaccinated as of tomorrow, meaning that he can then be around Mac, but she will have no one, but going down to one before losing all her littermates is not life ending. Your mum will pamper her.’

‘She already is doing that. Do you like the name?’

‘I do actually, Bobby suits him.’ She smiled. In the end, she had given the duty of puppy naming to Tom, seeing how much time and effort he put into his names. She watched as he went Googling multiple sites in hopes of getting the best possible one, looking at the picture of the puppy on his phone over and over as he thought of the names. Seeing what it meant to him, Danielle assigned puppy naming duties to Tom, with the right to veto if needed. Tom acted as though she had bestowed some immense honour on him and took it very seriously.

‘I cannot believe you had everything readied before you left.’ Tom chuckled, recalling how there was nothing left to chance with Danielle’s planning. ‘The training pads were the best investment ever.’

‘I can well imagine. Have you done what I told you to do?’

‘He is good, not there yet though.’

‘They learn, with consistency, he will catch on quick.’

‘He is getting there.’

‘Good, with Big Brother Mac, he will thrive even more. I cannot wait to see them together.’

‘I cannot wait to see you.’ Tom smiled.

‘Do you miss me?’

‘Terribly. Do you miss me?’

‘From time to time.’ Tom growled. ‘I do, so much, but mostly because we are forced apart to be safe and not because of work. It will be worth it when we and our boys are going for walks on the beach.’

‘We won’t be doing this too often.’ Tom agreed, ‘Bar everytime we add a puppy.’

‘And become dog hoarders.’ Danielle laughed.

‘Wait and see, it will be one of those crap tv specials yet.’ Tom joked.

‘I cannot wait to see you again.’

‘Tomorrow cannot come soon enough. How was work?’

‘Good, tiring. Mac loved it on set. There were seagulls, so you know him.’

‘He was only protecting you.’ Tom laughed.

‘And he did a great job, no thanks to me, I went within a few feet of one and he nearly lost his life.’

‘I told him to look out for you, he promised he would.’

‘I love you.’

‘How could you not?’ Tom joked, causing her to laugh. ‘I love you too, my beautiful Elle. I better go here, someone is....yep.’

‘Go, bye. Don’t scold him.’ Danielle called out before the line went dead.

‘Now, be nice.’ Danielle warned as she turned the key in the ignition and took it out. ‘Bobby is small and young, so he is scared.’ Mac sat up, seemingly knowing he was home again. She got out of the car and went around to the boot, opening it before undoing his harness. ‘We will have to sort something for him too actually, two hoops I suppose. I guess my car is officially the doggie car now.’ She rambled as Mac relieved himself against Tom’s car.

Collecting her suitcase and her laptop case, Danielle closed up the car and walked up the steps. She made sure to get in first, dropping her belongings in the hallway before letting Mac in. After a few moments, it was obvious there was no one there. Wondering where they could be, Danielle watched as Mac inspected the new smells that infested his domain with keen interest. She put her dirty laundry in the back kitchen then brought her case upstairs, all the time Mac trying to establish what was afoot. As he continued to investigate this new revelation, Danielle got everything else out of the car and looked at the locked gate that protected their home, wondering where Tom and Bobby had gone.

With the car cleared, she tidied everything away and let Mac out into the garden, only for him to continue his thorough assessment there. He looked at her more than once with an appearance that could only ever be accused of being concern. ‘I told you about this. You’ll get to meet him soon, I think.’ Mac gave a grunt in return.

It was another hour before Mac’s ears went up and he ran to the front of the house to see what was going on, telling Danielle that Tom and Bobby were returning. When she heard the key in the door, she walked out to the hallway and brought Mac into the kitchen before closing the door, meeting Tom in the hall. ‘Hi.’

‘What are you doing home early?’ Tom asked, his eyes wide as though shocked.

‘I said I would be back at lunchtime.’ She frowned.

‘No, you said dinner time.’

‘Tom, I sent you a text that clearly says lunchtime.’ She took out her phone and got up the message. ‘Yeah, “Okay, we will be home in time for lunch”.’ She held it up for him to see.

‘I didn’t read it right.’

‘Apparently not.’ She smiled. ‘It doesn’t matter, we are home now. Hello.’ She leant forward and kissed him.

‘But we weren’t here.’ Tom looked at her sheepishly. ‘I wanted us all to be here.’

‘Tom, it’s fine, it’s given Mac a chance to realise there is someone new here, he is very intrigued.’

‘How come you are ignoring him, how can you?’ Tom looked down where Bobby was currently jumping up all over Danielle’s legs.

‘I have to ignore him until he stops and gives me the behaviour I want from him, then I reward his behaviour with attention.’ She explained.

‘But he is being adorable.’

‘I know, but I want him to be adorable and good and the only way to get that is to be like this now, as much as I want to cuddle my little boy.’ Danielle shrugged with a small smile. Tom gave her a small look that made her frown again. ‘What’s up?’

‘I just feel like I messed up.’

‘Tom, please stop, you are being silly.’

‘So you are in no way upset that I was not here when you came home?’ He challenged.

Danielle was about to answer when Bobby, upset at the lack of attention, sat down to consider how to get her to pay him some. By doing that, he unknowingly did as he was wanted to do and Danielle smiled at him. ‘Good boy, hello.’ She knelt down and began to scratch under his ear. ‘You are far more cute that when I last saw you, are you being a good boy?’ The puppy, ecstatic with the attention, began to lick her hand. ‘I have a new friend for you, he is all nosey about meeting you, you are going to have so much fun together.’ she promised. ‘Did he get microchipped?’

‘Yes, and the vet nurse or receptionist or probably both, whatever she was, she said to look into insurance.’

‘Yeah, I need the microchip number to add him to the policy Mac is on, microchipping means a lower premium.’

‘So what is “pet insurance” exactly?’

‘Same as health insurance for us, if they get an issue and the vet needs to look into it, we can get them every sort of procedure done for little or nothing.’ She smiled. ‘Mac has never needed his, but it is something I think they should have regardless.’

‘Yeah, how will we sort that?’

‘Sort what?’

‘Well, you have Mac on it, so it is being charged to you.’

‘Tom, we are not going to start to half the bills.’

‘Why not, surely that is the best thing to do, we both pay them together?’

‘You want to do it that way?’ Tom’s face told her he thought it was the best idea. ‘Okay, sure, we can discuss it later at dinner.’ She looked at Bobby, who was sniffing at the kitchen door with his ears up, on the other side, there were responding sniffs. ‘Ready?’

‘How will we do this?’

‘I will go in and pull Mac back, you carry Bobby in and I will keep hold of Mac as you place him on the floor, we let Bobby make the first move. When he comes over, we wait for ears up and a tail wag from Mac and for Bobby to not look like he is about to pee himself, then I let go of Mac and we supervise introductions.’ She instructed.

‘If Mac does not like him?’

‘He will, he loves other dogs, but if, in the off chance that he goes insane here, I grab him and when I say get Bobby, you get him, not before.’ She ordered. Tom nodded and watched as she slipped into the room, him holding Bobby back as she did, the puppy’s ears perked as he whined at her for leaving them. ‘Hey, we talked about this, remember. Come over here to me and we’ll wait for him to come in, be nice.’ There was a moment of silence. ‘Okay Tom, come in.’

Tom lifted Bobby and walked into the room. When he got in, Mac seemed focused on Tom for a moment, wagging his tail happily at him before realising what was in his arms. Mac strained to get forward, his tail wagging already and his ears up as he sniffed the air in front of him to get as much of Bobby’s scent in as possible. Bobby, for his part, seemed as interested and was wriggling in Tom’s arms to get closer the other dog. Danielle gave the nod and Tom placed Bobby gently on the ground, as soon as he did, the puppy bounded the older dog, who shrank down as though attempting to not look as formidable to the pup. The sniffs only took a few moments before Bobby pawed Mac’s nose and the older dog playfully opened his mouth. Danielle let go of him and he immediately went forward, his two forelimbs on the ground with his behind in the air, urging the puppy to play.

‘Well, that went as expected.’ Danielle smiled, looking at them. ‘I knew they would get on. And you thought they would argue.’ She leant against Tom as she watched the dogs get to know one another. Tom continued to watch them as he put his arm around her, saying nothing.’Is something the matter Tom, you’re not acting like you.’

‘I am just wondering how I did not remember you were coming home this afternoon.’

‘Is that really bothering you that much?’

‘I had everything planned.’

‘Ooh, sounds fun.’ She smiled.

‘I was going to have dinner ready and everything and I feel like I fucked it up.’

‘You did not, please stop. You know I hate seeing you annoyed about something like this, it was a simple mistake.’ She pleaded. ‘Where did you two go for yourselves?’

‘Well, we went for a very short walk, since he is just fully vaccinated and he is less than pleased with his lead and harness.’

‘Mac will have him too occupied with fun to notice it from now on, wait and see. It cannot have been too short a walk, we are home for nearly two hours.’

‘I bumped into someone and we went for coffee.’

‘Ah, that makes more sense.’ Danielle nodded. ‘Anyone interesting?’

‘Lolita.’

‘From Hamlet, right?’

‘Yes.’

‘Very nice, how is she?’

‘Good, she is working on a slightly larger scale production soon.’

‘That’s good.’ Danielle gave a small smile and nod, she did not seem overly enthused.

‘Are you alright, you seem somewhat….off?’

‘Tired, worn out.’

‘Much paperwork?’

‘So much bloody paperwork, I did most of it while waiting to get the all-clear to come home, but there was a shit tonne of it.’ She leant into him. ‘I want nothing more than us and a few nights of quiet and maybe a few movies and to tidy it up before sending it.’

‘And plenty of dog walks.’

‘You are speaking my language.’ She moaned as she leant into him more. ‘Damn you smell good.’

‘Do I?’

‘Mmhmm. I saw the pictures by the way, of you and Bobby, you look so cute together.’

‘You’d swear I was caught out with another woman the way some of the photographers acted.’

‘But it is you, who is sexy and incredible looking, with an adorable puppy, have you any idea how that will look online for you?’ She laughed. ‘I can only imagine your fans, they are probably balls of baby talking mush right now. Can’t say I blame them, puppy looks good on you.’

‘You make me sound like Cruella DeVil.’

‘“Cruella DeVil, Cruella DeVil, if she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will,” except maybe Thomas Sharpe, or the High Rise, actually yeah, maybe the High Rise, less dog eating here hopefully. You play a lot of villains.’

‘Laing is not a villain.’

‘High Rise is interesting, they are all villains in their own way. Laing not as much as others, no rape or needless fighting, but he was never one to nail his colours to the mast. A survivor, an adaptor, but still, willing to ignore the plight of others.’

‘Well, as the Jag campaign stated, we Brits make the best villains.’ He grinned.

‘Ye usually are the villains anyway.’ She retorted.

‘Really, Ireland versus England jokes.’

‘Hey, you invaded us, don’t be getting uppity when we make jokes about it.’ Danielle nudged him slightly. The dogs seemed to get over the formal introductions and were trotting around the room together. ‘Uh-oh.’ Danielle walked forward and scooped up Bobby. ‘Outside Mister.’

‘He wasn’t doing anything.’

‘He was sniffing, that is a boy choosing a peeing spot.’ She placed him on the ground and waited. Bobby got sidetracked by smelling the place, since Mac had scented it since his return home, but within five minutes, he began to pee. ‘Good boy, oh he is the best man.’ Danielle gave him attention as soon as he finished, Bobby adoring every moment of it, trying to lick her face as she bent down to pet him.

‘You cleaned up.’ Tom noted when he looked around. ‘I was going to…’

‘I got it sorted, I did not want Mac trailing it in the house.’ She smiled. ‘Ready little man?’ Bobby trundled over to Tom, his ears flopping comically. ‘I love him so much already.’

‘He is adorable.’ Tom agreed. When they walked in, Mac seemed to realise he had not given Tom a proper hello and ran over to him, wagging his tail excitedly. ‘Well hello, I missed you too. Did you look after our girl when you were away, did you have fun?’ Mac grumbled back at him. ‘We need to have a good jog tomorrow, just you and me.’

Bobby looked on curiously before Danielle sat on the floor, causing the puppy to rush over to her for attention. After Mac felt that he and Tom caught up, Tom looked to Danielle, who was looking at her legs where Bobby had decided to fall asleep. ‘I don’t want to wake him.’

‘You have to get up.’ Tom reminded her.

Mac trotted over before mimicking the puppy and used her as a pillow. ‘Well, now I’m fucked. I am not getting up for the afternoon.’ Danielle laughed.

‘You did that to yourself really.’

‘I am surprisingly okay with it.’

OKAY SO LET ME EXPLAIN MY LIFE FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS

It’s Thursday, I go to see my therapist, I stop by Whole Foods on the way home because I know the Thanksgiving stuff will be out and I’m getting myself some stuffed Gardein cutlets because I can, and I go home and preheat the oven and prepare myself for a lovely lunch.

But then.

Those of you who follow my blog know of the adventures of Not Milo and Not Milo 2: Electric Boogaloo, the doppelgangers of my cat Milo who insist on showing up outside my house, but I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about Not Loki, so let me remedy that now.

Not Loki is a doppelganger of my cat, Loki, whom I had never seen up close before Thursday because he avoids my house. I can only assume he senses Milo there and knows to steer clear.

But today, he was all up on my porch, accompanied by Not Milo 2: Electric Boogaloo. So I opened the door to take a look and holy shit.

My first up close look at Not Loki was a mostly adorable tabby cat with one green eye and one eye that was a portal to hell itself. That is, red, inflamed, and oozing. It was so infected I was amazed he even had an eye at all.

Unlike the Not Milos, Not Loki did not have a collar. I didn’t have time to waste searching for an owner, so instead I grabbed Milo’s cat carrier, forced Not Loki into it, and took him to the vet’s office nearest to my neighborhood so I could have him treated and checked for a microchip, and maybe the vet would recognize him.

Except that office is closed on Thursdays for some reason, so instead I had to take him to a different vet.

That vet’s office was like “I don’t know if we can save his eye” but they gave me medicine for it. Not Loki did not have a chip, but he’s neutered and declawed on his front paws. Plus his fur was nice and sleek and he wasn’t emaciated, so presumably someone was caring for him.

I took him home and put him in my garage, where the litter box is, and locked the cat door from the house into the garage so that Milo couldn’t get in and terrorize him. Then I went door to door down my street ringing doorbells and trying to find Not Loki’s owner, but no one was answering because it was 2:30 in the afternoon and they were all at work and also it was raining very hard so I went back home.

Whereupon I found that somehow Milo had gotten through the locked cat door and was terrorizing Not Loki like the dick he is.

On Friday I got about 200 copies made of a FOUND CAT poster and went around putting them in mailboxes on my street and the surrounding subdivisions, and then going to various businesses and putting them up there too. I got one call that day from someone who was sure that Not Loki is her neighbor’s cat, but the neighbor had moved and there’s no forwarding information. Then on Saturday I had someone stop by the house to see if Not Loki was her daughter’s missing cat, but the lady decided he wasn’t.

Also on Saturday Not Loki had a checkup with the vet and they said at the start of the visit that they still weren’t sure if his eye could be saved but once they took him back to examine him further they said he was really improved but then they told me to put a towel under the door of the room I’m keeping him in because they didn’t even want me to risk Milo breathing his air, so I have no idea where he’s at health wise.

Anyway, I can’t keep Not Loki because the entire saga of Loki and Milo cohabiting has proved that Milo is a violent dick even to cats that he likes, and Not Loki has no front claws to defend himself, and also I can’t afford him, having just bought a house. So I guess I’ll start putting the word out about a free cat, and if that doesn’t bear fruit, there are a lot of no kill shelters near me.

Oh, and while I was distributing fliers in mailboxes, Not Milo 2: Electric Boogaloo decided to tag along.

Getting Pets to Okinawa

I went through so much stress while trying to figure out how I was going to get our two dogs over to Okinawa by myself. I wrote down my whole personal process of flying Air Mobility Command (AMC)/Patriot Express so I could ease the minds of any others who have to do this!

Obviously my experience is unique to me, but for the most part, I hope that my advice and experience can be useful for others during their process.

** One thing that these documents don’t tell you, is that if you are flying AMC/Patriot Express, you do NOT have to submit an advanced notification form to Japan. Some people recommend it anyway, because it can’t hurt! In case something were to go wrong and you end up having to change your flight plans to a commercial flight, submitting the Advanced Notification Form would be beneficial. That being said, I didn’t submit one but that was my personal choice! **

** There are several different names for the military flight that you will take, AMC or Patriot Express, are what I most often heard. For this post, I will be referencing the flight as “AMC” because that is what it is labeled as and referred to at the airport. **

The AMC flight only leaves from the Seattle/SEATAC Airport in Washington. I did delayed dependent travel due to finishing school in Minnesota. Since I was flying after my husband with our two dogs, I had to travel solo and figure this out. We couldn’t afford to commercially fly our dogs from Minnesota to Seattle, so I rented a car and drove out there.

***If you are in this situation (with pets + luggage), you NEED someone to come with you to help! I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of a friend who came to assist me.

If you are renting a car: The car rental return location is not connected to the airport. It’s not far, but still...after returning your rental, you will need to take the shuttle bus from the car rental return location back to the terminal. I had a friend who lives near the Seattle airport, meet me when I got to the terminal to help me with my unloading process (two large suitcases, a carry-on, two large dogs + their two large kennels!) - Picture will be seen below -

Once at the departure location, I asked one of the volunteer workers for a large cart to load up my dogs kennels and luggage on. My dogs are large so I needed a longer cart to fit both kennels on and then I loaded my suitcases on top. After unloading my car, my friend stayed at the terminal with my dogs and luggage while I went to return my rental. Just follow the signs for “car rental return” out of the airport and it’ll lead you right to where you need to go. I just had to pull up, tell them my name and they asked if I wanted a printed receipt or email copy. Then I walked to the shuttle bus to return to the terminal.

While I was doing that, the volunteer worker at the airport terminal led my friend and pushed my cart of belongings to the USO. This is where I met them when I got back to the terminal.

The USO is on the Mezzanine level, just one level up from the ticketing/check-in counters. If you don’t know what the USO is, in basic terms, it’s a lounge for military members and their families to stay while waiting for flights or travel arrangements.

There are elevators or stairs that you can use to get up there. The USO is on the complete opposite side of the airport than the AMC departure spot is. When you drive up to the departures, AMC is the very last drop off spot at the end. The volunteer workers work for tips so I gave the guy $10 for pushing my things up there. Once at the USO, my friend left and I checked in at the front desk. All of the people working there are so friendly and helpful to answer any questions.

I arrived at the airport really early, I checked into the USO at around 6:30pm Wednesday night. (With the flight not leaving til 0850 Thursday morning).

Since it was a “flight night”, the lady told me that I wouldn’t be able to store my dog kennels in their luggage room because there would be so many people coming in that will need to store their luggage in there. So I left my dogs in their kennels right outside to the left of the USO entrance and sat with them out there on the bench for pretty much the whole night.

The nice thing about where the USO is located, is that there really wasn’t anyone up there in the hallway unless they were other military members/families coming in. So it was pretty quiet up there and I was able to leave my dogs out there if I wanted to go into the USO to get some food or drinks.

Side note!! I believe that at certain times of the day/night on overseas flight nights, the USO limits the people allowed in. So if you’re not active duty or traveling on orders, you might not be able to come in.. just so you know! Some people got turned away when they came by due to flight delays for their leisure travel and just wanted somewhere to hang out while they waited.

I was able to let my dogs out and just have them hang out with me outside of their kennels as long as they were leashed. This was nice, so I could let them stretch out and interact with them before the flight where they’d be kenneled for long hours.

There are two locations, one on each end of the airport outside the check-in counters, to let your dogs go to the bathroom. It’s a very tiny area it was mostly dirt/rock with bushes on it so it’s not the nicest place. But luckily my dogs aren’t too picky on where they go potty, so they were fine. There is a poop bag dispenser and garbage can put there in case you need to pick up after them!

While I was waiting, I decided to go down to the AMC (Air Mobility Command) office which is located against the back wall on the baggage claim level. There was a lady named Heather working and she gladly looked over my dogs’ paperwork to make sure I had everything I needed. That gave me piece of mind to know I would be okay.

0200 was when the check-in process started. One of the USO workers was directing people to make their way down to the check-in desk. I went down at about 0300, and again I needed a cart for my dog’s kennels. The USO has carts that you can use but make sure one is available for you. The airport worker wouldn’t let me keep my original cart upstairs with me, so I had to find a different one for checking in. At that time of the morning, the airport volunteers are not there, so it was really hard for me to find another cart (since they lock them all up). So if a USO worker can save a cart for you, have them do that! That will make your life easier if you have big kennels to haul.

Once I got downstairs with my dogs in their kennels and my luggage stacked on top, there was a lady specifically checking pet paperwork and kennel requirements. I hadn’t even gotten in line yet and she came to me to take my pets’ information.

This is the information that she needed from me:

Passport (the one issued by military aka No Fee Blue Passport)

Copy of official orders

Web orders (USMC)

Area clearance

For my pet paperwork, this is what she asked for:

Health certificates for pet (copy)

FAVN report for rabies titer (copy)

Rabies certificates signed by vet (copy)

**She did not want my dog’s original signed paperwork, she wanted COPIES ONLY**

Make sure you have several copies of everything. I had 5 copies of each piece of paperwork, plus the originals. Also, double check to make sure all the information about your pet matches correctly for each piece of paperwork. Make sure the microchip numbers are correct on each document!

She provided me with a plastic sleeve to put the pet documents in and it sticks to the top of the kennels. I had brought with gallon sized ziplock bags for this reason, but they provide you with them. I guess it doesn’t hurt to be over-prepared!

The price of taking your dogs is supposed to be determined by their weight... well, all she did was ask me how much each dog weighed with their kennels. So I gave my best estimated guess (100lb & 80lb) so it was $250 per dog for me.

From the AMC website, this is what the pet travel fees are:

A combined weight ≤ 70 lbs will be charged as one piece of excess baggage ($125).

A combined weight of 71-140 lbs will be charged as two pieces of excess baggage ($250)

The lady took my credit card right there and came back with my receipt to sign.

The AMC website can tell you all necessary requirements for your pet travel either in cabin or cargo. If they are traveling cargo, here’s what I found:

The size I got for both of my dogs were the 70-90lb size, so they have enough room to stand completely up with 3 inches above their head/ears, lay down comfortably and to turn around in the kennel. Those are requirements from AMC when choosing a kennel. My shepherd/lab mix is a little bit too tall for the 70-90lb kennel (she fit fine, but did not have enough room above her head when she stood up according to the AMC requirements). So, instead of paying twice as much for the next size up in kennels, my dad helped make a kennel height extension with some 2 by 4 pieces of wood! We saved a lot of money by doing this.

More requirements:

Metal bolts to fasten the kennel together (my kennel came with metal bolts but plastic nuts that screwed on.. so I went and bought my own nuts and bolts at Home Depot.)

Make sure you have a bolt for every hole! The only issue I ran into during my pet check-in, was that she told me I needed a bolt in each hole in the back of my one dog’s kennel (Picture below).

I had a bolt in the two outer small holes, but not in the middle one... I figured it would be fine, because it’s not like my dog was going to escape! Lol. But luckily I was overly paranoid about things going wrong, so I had packed extra nuts and bolts! Phew! :)

Zip ties - they require you to zip tie the doors of the kennels before flight (I bought the reusable zip ties, so they don’t have to be cut... but they cut them off anyway when we landed in Yokota, so it doesn’t have to be the reusable ones!)

**please confirm with AMC to make sure what the up to date requirements are!! What I am listing is from my experience, and I have not recently looked what the updated requirements may be!**

Things that were not technically required, but recommended (and everyone with a pet had these) are:

Clip on dish that went on the inside of the kennel door. Link: Clip on Dish

Large non spill water containers that I zip tied from the outside of the kennel doors (giant hamster water things) I got mine at Walmart! Link here: Pet No Drip Water Bottles

Puppy pee pads - set on the bottom of the kennel and then a blanket on top (also bought at Walmart). In case your pet does have an accident, you can take these out when you stop and hopefully it will soak most of it up!

Once the lady took my paperwork and I paid for the dogs, I went in line for the luggage drop off. There is a separate line for families and for single military members during the check in process. I probably waited in line for an hour and a half. They weighed all of my bags, my carry on and personal item together and then my two check bags together. You are allowed two large checked bags not to exceed 70lb each. The weight of your carry-ons doesn’t matter, just the dimensions. I was told my carry-on needed to be no larger than 9x14x22” for total of 45inches. He also asked me how much I weigh.. lol. I was told that they just want to know the estimated weight of the plane when they get done, I guess?

Once I got my bags taken and I was checked in, I was told to keep my dogs with me until 0600 and I was to bring them back down to that same location where I checked in. So for the time being, I pushed them back upstairs to outside the USO and just hung out again until I had to bring them back.

At about 0530, I let them out to go potty one last time, and then pushed them back down to the check-in place. There are workers there to direct you on what to do. At this point is where I put the zip ties on and sat with them until they told me we could go. It was time to say goodbye to my pups until our first stop :(

Then the lady said we could go to the security line. The line wasn’t too bad. There are multiple security checkpoints. The lady told us to go through the security line near Jet Blue, which is towards the middle of the terminal.

Once I got through security, my gate was S12. (I don’t know if this is where the AMC flight leaves every single time or not, but this is what my experience was). You need to go downstairs to the tram that will take you to the S Gates. After getting through security, you will be at the A gates, the tram first stops at the B gates from there (which is where the AMEX Centurion Lounge is right across from gate B3.. for any of you AMEX platinum card holders! You can get into the lounge for free and get free food and drinks!) The tram then next stops at the S gates where you will get off at.

We started the boarding process around 0800. My flight was scheduled to leave at 0850. They boarded families with small children first, then higher ranks, then they called people by rows. Service members need their ID and boarding pass, family members needed their passports and boarding pass.

Flight:

The first flight is about 10 hours. After not sleeping for like 24 hours, I was ready to sleep on the plane!! The seats are nice and they recline significantly so you can relax. They have little TVs that you can watch movies or shows on and they provide you with: pillow, blanket, ear buds, two meals and drinks.

I slept for the first 7 hours of the flight lol... so I missed the first meal but the second one was good. I ate the chicken parmesan with noodles and vegetables. Also they had bread and butter, crackers and a cheese slice, potato salad and cheesecake! It wasn’t too bad considering it was prepackaged airline food!

We landed in Yokota first, we got off the plane as they told us to, right off onto the tarmac. Once inside the small airport they gave us directions of what to do/where to go and what time to be back. They then let us pet owners let out our pets for about a half an hour. There is a small fenced in grassy area that you can put them in to go to the bathroom and stuff. They also provided water in bowls which was really nice!

You can leave your stuff on the plane, bring any money or whatever if you want snacks at the vending machine inside. Not much for options. For pets - just bring their leashes and extra zip ties to re-fasten their kennel when you put them back in. I gave my pups plenty of water and a small amount of food to hold them over for the remainder of the trip. They did really well! No accidents in the kennel and they both seemed happy and normal! Phew!! What a relief, they were my number one concern in this whole process!

The layover was about 2 hours and then we boarded again and headed to Iwakuni. This flight is only about 1 hour and 45 min. I was surprised because we were able to let our dogs out on this stop as well! For over an hour! They had a grass area outside for them to be at and a spicket to give them water.

There was a Japanese man at a food truck outside so you could buy some food and drinks. I got myself a hot dog and a soda :)

Then off on our last flight, to land in our final destination: Okinawa!

We landed on Kadena Air Base, went through customs and then to the baggage claim. My dogs were already there waiting for me. You will see a counter where the pets are, with base veterinarian staff. I handed the base veterinarian staff my official paperwork for them. This is where they take the original copies of everything, including your pet’s Health Certificate. They will have you sign some forms, and tell you everything you need to know. You have 72 business hours to take your pets into the vet on Kadena Air Base to get looked over.

I landed in Okinawa on Friday night, so I didn’t take my dogs in until Monday morning. They have specific walk in hours for people who are there to have their pets get their initial inspection done. There is a long wait time, so get there early if possible! You’ll need another set of copies of your paperwork for the base vet as well. Make sure you have plenty of copies!!

My pups are now officially done with quarantine and they are doing well.

It was a lot of stress to deal with, but so worth having them out here with us for these 3 years! I hope this post helps anyone who is stressing about the process of PCSing with a pet!

How many cats are there in the UK? : Meow! Blog

It will come as no surprise to moggy-lovers that cats are the most popular pets in the UK, just overtaking dogs to the top spot.

In fact, there are believed to be an incredible 11.1 million pet cats in the country, compared to 8.9 million pet dogs, with 25% of the adult population owning at least one kitty.

However, while we can pretty accurately identify the number of owned cats, there are many unowned stray and feral cats roaming the UK’s streets and countryside too, and they’re much harder to count.

Counting the cat population

To try to get a more accurate figure of the UK’s unowned cat population, Cats Protection launched the Cat Watch project in 2016.

We’ve been working closely with local communities to encourage them to report unowned cats, either via our Cat Watch app, Cat Watch Facebook groups or in person to our Cat Watch teams, so that we can ensure they are well cared for. We do this by working with cat caretakers in communities to get the cats neutered to prevent more unwanted cats being born, and either finding them new homes or supporting residents with the help they need to look after them.

The project began in Bulwell, Nottingham, an area identified as having a large unowned cat population, and has since expanded into Everton, Beeston in Nottingham and Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire with the hope that eventually it could be UK-wide.

In Bulwell, the hard work of our Cat Watch team and the cooperation of local residents has meant that, to the best of our knowledge, no new kittens were born on Bulwell’s streets in 2018 – fantastic news for the community and its cats.

In Everton, the Cat Watch team received almost 1,000 reports of cats in the first 12 months of the project and were then able to get 262 cats neutered and find 88 of them new forever homes, with work ongoing to help even more stray and feral moggies in the area.

The team has also managed to change the attitudes of Everton’s local residents towards cats, as a survey has revealed a positive increase in their feelings towards neutering as a way to improve cat welfare and reduce antisocial cat behaviour.

More than half of residents felt that Cat Watch had had a positive impact on cats and on the Everton community, with many indicating that it had also increased their sense of wellbeing, confidence and connectedness within their community.

The adventures of Six Dinners Sid

Within the Everton area, the Cat Watch team discovered one rather large cat who had acquired quite a following.

The grey-and-white moggy had been reported to them by local resident Jane, and after asking around to see if anyone knew where he came from, it was soon discovered that he had quite a few different carers and feeders! Jane and the team even managed to track his daily route around the neighbourhood, which involved several stops at different houses for food and cosy naps.

All of this roaming meant that he’d also acquired several different names from his many families; Terry, Smokie, Bear BB, Romeo, Cheeky Monkey, Mr Grey and Six Dinners Sid.

Shortly after his antics had been revealed, Sid became ill. His many carers all rallied together to get him the best possible treatment, but sadly his kidney disease was too advanced.

During this time, Jane took him into her home to give him all of the love and attention he needed, and when the time came for him to go, his entire family of carers gathered around him to say goodbye.

Jane said: “He was a huge cat with a large heart (and tummy!) and we all followed his adventures with relish. He was audacious, charismatic, greedy and fussy, demanding only the best fresh food, and could be grumpy if he didn’t get his own way. He was a true gentleman and ambassador for every community cat making their way out there.”

A new home for Tatty

Shortly after Sid had sadly passed away, Tatty the cat appeared in another Everton resident’s garden looking a little worse for wear.

He was reported to the Cat Watch team to see if his owner could be found, but he wasn’t microchipped and no one came forward to claim him.

The team them took him to the vet for a health check and neutering, where he was found to be badly matted, covered in ticks, have a small growth on his eyelid and need some dental work to make him comfortable again. He also tested positive for FIV, but as he was so friendly the vets were confident he could be rehomed to an indoor environment.

The Cat Watch team knew that Jane, Six Dinners Sid’s primary carer, was looking to adopt a new cat after saying goodbye to Sid, and so introduced her to Tatty. It was love at first sight, and it didn’t take Tatty, now renamed Bailey, very long to settle in to his new home.

Jane said: “Bailey’s a right cuddle monster. He’s enjoying being pampered and spoilt! He is so funny and so like Sid/Mr Grey when it comes to food! He knows where the food is kept and sat at the door until I opened it! He loves chicken and the smell of a roast, he sat watching us eat ours making snorting noises.”

Contest Entry - Cats!

Disclaimer: I don’t actually own any pets at the moment. However I have done research into pets (mostly because I want to be a good pet parent once I have a pet (つ﹏<)･ﾟ｡) I am NOT an expert by any means. Do NOT interpret the stuff in this entry as fact.

This entry is a “what if Magala Mod was a dorky YouTube (or should it be HunterTube?) blogger who owns several monsters as pets and two of them happen to be ‘Stras”. This assumes that we live in the Monster Hunter world but we somehow managed to domesticate monster (Monsties?) and keep them as pets. Its a slightly unconventional entry.

[Teostra sitting in a box. He turns to look at the camera.]

“Ok just a bit closer… closer… closer… yes Haru… just don’t move…. ARGH!”

BOOM!

(Insert quirky intro that involves only pictures of Teostras, Lunastras and random monsters. Cut to dorky looking mod)

“Hey there Monster Hunters! Magala mod here and today I’m gonna talk to you about…”

[picks up adorable looking Teostra. He’s doing a blep and sheds all over mod’s shirt.]

“My pet ‘Stras! This here is Haru.”

[Puts him down. Picks up a Lunastra. She wiggles.]

“And this here is Diana. Aren’t they cuties?~”

[Magala mod tries to cuddle Diana. The Lunastra just puts her paw on Magala mod’s face and pushes. Magala mod just goes (￣￣|||) Cut scene. They are now on the floor.]

“After I posted a picture of Haru and Diana, a lot of you guys have been asking me stuff like… Where did you get a ‘Stra? Aren’t they really hard to take care of? And aren’t they dangerous? Well I’m here to say yes. [BOOM in the background] Yes they are dangerous.”

[Magala mod runs to get a fire extinguisher.]

*Technical Difficulties - Please Stand By*

[Cuts back to floor. There are now new scorch marks. Haru is curled up on Magala mod’s lap. Diana is sitting in a box with a “I really don’t care” look on her face.]

“But they are worth it, if you can take care of them. Just like any other pet they have their needs and if you can’t give them their needs, then you should really reconsider getting one as a pet. Isn’t that right Haru?~”

[Haru stretches and goes back to sleep. Magala mod starts squishing his toebeans.]

“Ok now first things first. How did I get these two. For those of you who don’t know, all domestic ‘Stras are descended from a group of wild ‘Stras back in the 20’s. Those ‘Stras lived in a monster sanctuary in the Volcanic Hollow. They were raised as orphaned cubs, not taken from their parents like some people believe. For a while, people were breeding them to help with the wild population. Those cubs were bred for their fur and parts, instead of hunting the wild population. Remember things were different back then. Monster rights aren’t what they are now and there are seriously no health benefits to ‘Stra horns or claws.”

[Haru gets up and starts playing with Diana. She looks uninterested, but he insists.]

“They started testing for temperament and they bred calmer ‘Stras with other calmer ‘Stras. Soon they became popular pets for people. Because of this, all family lines of ‘Stras are documented. I have the family tree for these two in my files. It's pretty neat because I know who the parents are and how likely they are for certain diseases. The National ‘Stra Club and good breeders do their best to not inbreed any litters.”

[Diana smacks Haru on the face. He looks offended.]

“Ok so if you remember a few months back I was on hiatus. That was because I was picking up these two! My family and I drove all the way to Volcanic Hollow and checked out the original breeding sanctuary for ‘Stras. If you want to know more, click on the link to my video blog in the description below... And here is where this video gets serious. If you want to adopt a ‘Stra please get it from a reputable breeder.”

[Magala mod picks up Diana. She does a cute royal yawn before licking her paws.]

“The process to get these two took FOREVER. Ok. And I mean it! I was on a waiting list. A waiting list for a year. The sanctuary went to my house. They checked everything. And by the way, if you want to get a ‘Stra or any monster from the Volcanic area, check out Volcanic Lions. You can find them on Hunterbook. They take care of everything: Diana and Haru’s vaccines, spay and neuter, and microchip. They also insisted that if I could not take care of them, they would take them back. I had to sign a waiver and everything. Total these two cost me 1 million zenny. But you two are worth it right?”

[Haru does a blep and rolls. Diana just stares with cute eyes. Magala mod cuddles her head.]

“Yeah so if you want one look out for those things = reputation, reviews, waivers, documentation. All that. Remember a reputable breeder doesn’t do this for money. Most of that money was to cover vaccine costs and the rest went to their non profit. Because ‘Stras are an exotic breed, they have to have certain vaccines and have specific things the vet needs to watch out for. I picked them up when they were 6 weeks old. They were never taken from their mom or anything. They are also well socialized.”

[Mod tries to pick up Diana again. She just stares at mod before wiggling out.]

“Ok now on to danger. Like all the exotic monster breeds. These ‘Stras are dangerous. Their explosion powder gets everywhere so get one of these.”

[picks up a Roomba vacuum. It's already filled with explosion dust.]

“I empty this thing. Every. Single. Day. Oh my Gog. Its insane. So get one of those Furminator combs too. You will need it. ‘Stras are long haired monsters so they need ALOT of grooming.”

[Puts the Roomba down. Haru and Diana hiss at it.]

“And get the fireproof model. It's worth the extra 100 zenny. Now ‘Stras are a high energy monster. They need lots of toys and entertainment… Unless your ‘Stras are like these two. Seriously. I buy them many toys.”

[Shows a whole room of toys and pet beds. Haru and Diana are loafs in cardboard boxes labeled “Konchu Express”.]

“They prefer the boxes.”

[cuts to old footage. Magala mod offers them a new expensive toy. Haru and Diana climb into the box it came in. Magala mod goes: (ლ‸－) *facepalm*]

“Make sure you trim their claws often. One of the benefits of getting ‘Stras from reputable breeders is that they are well socialized. The breeders touch their paws often so they are used to getting their claws trimmed.”

[Cuts to footage of Mod trying to trim Haru’s claws. He fusses a bit. Mod tries to trim Diana’s claws. She just daintily puts her paws in Mod’s hands.]

“Diana here is the diva. She just likes getting her way. Haru is more reckless but he’s the cuddle bug. Make sure you play with them often. Like most monsters, they have their own personalities. But since they are from a good breeder, they have good temperaments. Watch this.”

[Magala mod plays with Haru’s muzzle. He doesn’t bite. When Mod lets go, he licks her hand.]

“I highly recommend getting two. They play with each other while I’m out at work. But I know that costs more. And trust me…”

[Glances at them. Haru is tearing a box to shreds. Diana is daintily licking her paws.]

“They go through a ton of litter and food. And that goes to the last question. Are they hard to take care of? Well yes. I would not consider them a beginner pet. They are very high energy. A walk is not enough exercise for them. They love to pounce and play hunt. Lately I’ve been taking them to agility courses.”

[Cuts to footage from agility. Magala mod is showing Haru how to jump through hurdles. He runs and then sort of chews on the hurdle. Laughter in the background. Haru rolls over onto his belly and claws playfully at Magala mod.]

“I know most people see agility as something for Nargacuga. But ‘Stras can do the same. These monsters are usually bred to for show. Haru and Diana love showing off. I dunno if you can tell but Diana’s been trying to get in the camera this whole time.”

[Diana glances at the camera, before looking cute and showing off her mane.]

“So overall, ‘Stras are a really cool high energy pet. They are very loyal and they love showing off. Train them well and you won’t regret it.”

[Mod picks up Haru. He does a cute blep and shows his toebeans.]

“Remember that this is from my experience with these pets. Before going out to adopt one, make sure you do your research! If you have any questions about taking care of one I recommend asking a vet. Before adopting, please be sure to check out your local shelter or rescue and see if you can adopt one before buying. I know I paid 1 million zenny for these two, but half of that money goes to the Volcanic Lions Rescue Foundation, a non profit rescue that rehabs and rescues wild ‘Stras.”

[Haru wiggles out of Mod’s arms. Diana gracefully walks in the shot and sits down.]

“Ok thanks for watching! Next video I’m gonna talk about one of my other pets. This has been a long time request. I’m gonna be talking about…”

[Picks up a cute Gore Magala. She realizes she’s on screen and wiggles away.]

“Maggie, my Gore Magala. I’m gonna be talking about how I got her, how I take care of her scales, and most importantly why you should adopt not purchase a Gore Magala. But specifically for ‘Stras I recommend a good breeder or a ‘Stra specific rescue. Well all that and more on the next video! Please leave a like, comment, or subscribe! Advice on a very malnourished stray cat my mom found!

Hello everyone!

I need some advice, if anyone would like to give it! Although it’s not exactly about what you might think, given the title of this post.

About half a week ago, my mom took in a stray, seemingly old and friendly cat that was wandering around our neighborhood. How this cat has survived for so long beats me, due to the fact that she lives RIGHT at the base of some foothills where we regularly see coyotes, owls and hawks. We’ve also had warnings of mountain lions near her neighborhood, but those are few and far between.

This cat.. my goodness, this poor thing is literally SKIN and BONES. It’s also a long haired cat so it’s fur is pretty dull and matted as well. It looks old, to me, but it might just be because of how malnourished it is. I’m also fairly confident that this cat hasn’t had a home in a long time, because I think I remember it from several years ago as a kitten, wondering around our neighborhood, and it looked healthy then. But I’m thinking the owners moved away (or possibly passed away, because my mom lives in a neighborhood that is meant for retirement aged people and a majority of the residents are very old).

On the other hand, this might be a different cat entirely.

ANYWAYS, since my mom has found it she’s taken it to the vet and had it looked at, and is now feeding and caring for it as directed by said vet, and is taking it back in the next couple days to have it groomed and checked for parasites and other diseases (the vet is mainly worried about leukemia and HIV right now) as well as checked for a microchip (which I doubt it’ll have one).

OK SO HERE’S THE DILEMA;

I posted a picture of the cat on my Snapchat story when I stopped by my moms house to drop off some flowers (I don’t live with her, I have my own place across town). Well apparently this guy that I’m friends with on Snapchat, who I USED to be friends with back in high school (although I haven’t talked to him in probably like 4 years) saw the cat, and WENT to my moms house (he lives in the same neighborhood as her and knows where she lives because I used to live there) and told her that his grandma found the cat, A FEW MONTHS AGO and has been nursing it back to health, and his grandma really wants it back.

So my mom asked “if your grandma has been taking care of it for a few months, why is it still so thin?”

“Well, it was getting better and then it got worse”

My mom: “I found it wandering around outside, so if she’s been caring for it how did it get out?”

“My brother must have let it outside”

My mom: “have you guys taken it to see a vet?”

“No, we haven’t had the money”

So my mom told him what the vet has said so far, and told him that she’s going to keep the cat for now and continue to care for it based on what the vet said.

But then this guy messages ME via Snapchat and tells me how much his grandma wants that cat back and how attached to it she’s gotten. But this family obviously doesn’t have the money to properly care for this cat, so I don’t feel that we should give the cat back. Especially if my mom spends all the time and money to bring it back to health, only for them to neglect it by not taking it to the vet or letting it outside for it to get eaten by something.

Not to mention that they don’t have any more right to the cat than my mom does, considering it’s only a stray and they both just found it wandering around outside. Although my mom also really wants to keep the cat (if she’s not allergic, because she is allergic to some cats). But he’s already messaged me TWICE since then asking “how is my cat doing?” (Although the second time I explained that it’s not HIS cat, or anyone’s as of right now).

So my mom and I aren’t really sure what to do!

Should we give the cat back to this guy and his grandma, who found it originally? Even though I KNOW they won’t care for it properly, but the grandma has grown very attached to it.

Should my mom keep it, since she’s putting so much time and effort and money into it? Although if this guy knows that she has it, I don’t think he’ll EVER leave us alone.

Or, if she’s allergic, should we try to find it a good home once it’s healthy again?

Or, just take it to the humane society once it’s healthy?

(We already know that the cat isn’t going anywhere until it’s healthy again).

This guy is very persistent so far and honestly, it makes me a little uncomfortable. My mom and I are slightly worried that he might break into her house to steal the cat back, but that seems unlikely since we would KNOW it was him.

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas for us, please let us know!

This makes me so angry, I think about if I lost one of mine and how much I'd want them back home. When I found Noodle we tried for months to find her people, took out newspaper ads, posted online, sent flyers to all rescues and shelters, contacted all vets in the area with flyers. It was only after all that that I microchipped her as mine. I can't image how Hubs would look, as a special needs dog, if he was lost for even a week, and he's so loved. I did what I'd want

It was also during the summer when several towns were evacuated. It could have been freaked out and jumped out of the evacuee’s car or something. Can’t just assume you know the past or anything. (I’ve been evacuated before and in the rush to get animals out we had to just throw animals in the car. We did grab harnesses and leashes for our cats since we didn’t have time to dig out extra carriers. But I could def see a freaked out evacuated cat loose in a car and bolting at first chance)

If you find a dog that looks skinny or uncared for, and the owner comes forward you give the dog back and pass on your concerns to animal cruelty investigators. They can look into if the dog has a health issue, maybe it’s a recent rescue, etc. Or maybe the owner is neglectful and doesn’t care, in which case it can be dealt with legally.

Take a Dog-Friendly Vacation to the Ritz-Carlton, Aruba

Looking for the ultimate luxury vacation where you can actually take your dog? I’d suggest the Ritz-Carlton on Aruba. I was lucky enough to personally check out this dog-loving island and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, a pet-friendly luxury property. Luxury properties don’t always allow pets, but certain Ritz-Carltons do and, of course, it does it in style.

I traveled to Aruba and spent several days there along with Instagram dog celebrities and their humans: Yorkie mix Ella Bean, her human, Hilary Sloan, plus husband Noah Shulman, creative director of video content (@ellabeanthedog); Maltipoo Mochi and her human, Elle Drouin (@mochiandthecity); and Brussels Griffon Sprout and his human, Sigrid Neilson (@brussels.sprout).

No surprise, the Ritz-Carlton rolled out the welcome wagon. That’s what they do. Aruba’s weather was perfect. That’s what it is. However, the first, middle and last thing I noticed was that Arubans are passionate about dogs. Everyone who worked at the Ritz-Carlton, from the managers to the restaurant hostess, the housekeepers and food and drink service team were crazy about dogs. I was shown photo after photo of their own dogs. The guests seemed to love dogs, too. The little dog trio was treated like celebrities.

They ate fresh prepared meals from their own doggie menus, lounged around on their own dog-sized cabanas on the beach and enjoyed doggie massages as part of the spa treatment. What dog could ask for more?

Hilary tells me that Ella’s favorite part was “hands down” the chef-prepared food. “She realllly loved the salmon dish in particular,” Hilary says. “She turned up her nose at her regular food for a few days when we got home.” Hilary and Noah’s favorite part was when they got to swim with Ella in the warm sea. “Where else can you get clear, calm and warm water to enjoy and bask in and — even better — splash with your pup? It was a one-of-a-kind experience.”

Elle and Mochi agree that the gourmet food was definitely a highlight. “The Ritz-Carlton has a special dog-friendly menu featuring a “woof woof” cocktail of light chicken consommé, chicken breast and diced vegetables (so delicious!) as well as other gourmet options like salmon tataki, flank steak and duck liver pate.” She adds, “Mochi also enjoyed watermelon ‘ice cubes’ on the beach, plenty of fresh fruit and a special salmon sushi dinner our last night at the hotel!”

There were guests I met who come back to the Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, every year. I can’t blame them. The resort has beautiful, large rooms with private ocean-view balconies. There are four different places to eat, two swimming pools and several shops, where you can buy anything from bathing suits to cute dog products. You can bring your dog with you to these areas, plus the expansive beachfront where there are water activities you have access to like stand-up paddleboarding, which not only did the dogs try but some of the local Aruba dogs as well. There we met Aruba’s own Instagram celeb and dog rescue supporter Yoga Girl Rachel Brathen (@yoga_girl) and her paddleboarding dog Ringo (@ringo_thegringo).

You can also kayak, snorkel, scuba dive and sail. The Ritz-Carlton is the last hotel at the end of the island, and you can easily take your dog out walking around on the beach away from other tourists. (Keep your dog on a leash since Aruba does have a leashed dog law.) Several areas you’ll want to check out, but get a dogsitter since these are human only, are the resort’s casino (slot machines, table games, bingo), the Fitness Center gym (two thumbs up from me!) and the luxury spa (facial and massage, anyone?). However, your dog can get a doggie massage if he so desires.

Like many luxury hotels, there is a $250 non-refundable pet fee. Although there isn’t a specific dog potty area on the resort grounds, there are plenty of spots your dog can use — just make sure to pick up after. The sun and ocean breeze are wonderful, but you’ll need to keep your dog hydrated, in the shade when possible (like the cabanas!), use dog sunscreen and perhaps protective doggie sunglasses, as the sand does blow around with the winds. There are always things you must do when traveling with your dog. For Aruba, your pup must weigh less than 20 pounds to stay at the Ritz-Carlton and to travel in the passenger compartment of the airplane. For American pups, you need a valid International Veterinary Health Certificate issued within 14 days prior to arrival in Aruba endorsed by the USDA, a valid rabies shot and inoculation certificate, and your dog must be microchipped. My dogs were a little too big to come with me, so I asked Hilary and Elle about their experience. “It was actually so easy!” Hilary says. “We were nervous, because part of the process requires scanning and emailing the Aruba customs agency, but they responded within the same day to give their approvals. I simply printed the attachment they sent, brought the papers from the USDA via my vet’s office and showed them when we landed.”

Elle’s experience was also easy. “Since Mochi was already microchipped and up-to-date on her rabies vaccinations,” she explains, “after getting the signed health certificate from her vet, we just had to overnight it to the USDA office in Albany, New York, with a $38 endorsement fee along with an overnight return envelope. Once we got that back, we emailed all of the signed paperwork to the Veterinary Service of Aruba for approval.”

What to do around Aruba

Aruba is known for its white-sand beaches, consistent warm, sunny days (around 80 degrees), warm ocean waters and cool ocean breezes, which is why this 19.6-mile long and 6-mile across island off of Venezuela is so popular. It’s part of the Netherlands, and you can find the Dutch influence everywhere. In fact, many of the Arubans I spoke to at the Ritz-Carlton attended college in the Netherlands before coming back to the island. There are two official languages, both Dutch and Papiamento (Bon Bini means welcome in Papiamento).

If you can tear yourself away from the Ritz-Carlton, there are many places to explore. If you love shopping, you’ll find many stores downtown in the capital city of Oranjestad. There are also several museums, the Arikok National Park and the Bubali Bird Sanctuary. We took a short ride out to the beautifully restored old stone California Lighthouse, which gives you an amazing view of the island. There are as many land activities (ATVs, horseback riding, etc.) as water activities, so you’ll never be bored.

Dogs are well-loved on the island, but, just like in the United States, there is a homeless pet population. I got to meet some dedicated dog welfare devotees at the resort. Aruba Ritz-Carlton’s own hotel manager, Louella Brezovar, introduced us to members of Sgt Pepper’s Friends (sgtpeppersfriends.com), a nonprofit that she and others at the Ritz-Carlton volunteer for. Louella had personally flown adopted pets to the United States, delivering them to Americans who had adopted the Aruban dogs.

Aruba dogs are all mixed breeds called Aruba Cunucu dogs and weigh between 35 to 55 pounds. You can follow these rescue dogs along with the group on its website or social media pages @sgtpeppersfriends.

When you are an Instagram celebrity, you’re in much demand and get to travel all over. Hilary and Elle gave us some of their hard-learned tips for flying with dogs.

“Listen to your dog,” Hilary says. “Ella Bean is an extremely confident flyer and naps the entire time. She prefers to stay in her bag and feels most secure there but enjoys checking in, and we always give her special treats during the trip. Our other pup, Louis does NOT enjoy flying and feels it’s scary and stressful. We don’t travel with him because we respect his boundaries.”

Elle’s advice: “Make sure your dog is comfortable. If they’re not used to traveling in a carrier, give them a chance to spend time in it while you’re at home. Mochi loves being in her carrier, so she usually naps the entire flight!”
