The Degrassi Ship Tournament will start soon!

Now that I have more ships submitted than I can put in and submissions seem to have slowed, I've closed the form and decided on the official bracket!

The way I decided which ships went in was by prioritizing the canonical ships. All of the fully non-canonical ships that were submitted will automatically be in the next tournament, which will be a "crackship" tournament (I'm using crackship to mean anything fully non-canonical, since that's an easier line to draw).

Here is the bracket on google docs. You can make a copy to make predictions if you would like (there's even a bracket that I will leave blank for this purpose)! Just use the dropdowns to select winners. I'll also put a template on my pinned post for anyone who would like to use it.

when i was in high school, i was briefly obsessed with Degrassi: The Next Generation, because it played on the same channel that aired heavily censored reruns of Daria and i saw some promos and got curious. came for the Craig, stayed for the Marco. i watched the episode of Marco and Dylan's first date enough times to have it memorized, including the stupid JT b-plot ("don't get all up in my fries, dog"), and we did not have on-demand television back then. anyway.

at some point, Degrassi did a series of biographical specials about their lead actors, a "they're TV stars but also regular kids just like you!" sort of thing. naturally there was one about Aubrey Graham, the actor who played Jimmy. (memorable Jimmy moment: when he caught Spinner writing "MARCO IS GAY" on the bathroom wall and said "what are you gonna write next, something about me being Black?")

a large part of Aubrey Graham's special was devoted to his burgeoning music career. they showed him in the studio in front of a pop-filtered mic with big headphones on, and some adult--a producer maybe?--gushed about how he wasn't just fooling around and thinking he could reinvent the wheel, he really knew and respected all the old-school stuff, and the example they cited was Kriss Kross. they were really impressed that Aubrey Graham knew Kriss Kross. i don't even remember if they said he liked them, just that he knew who they were.

so basically i've always known Drake was a fucking poser. "started from the bottom" my ass. you started on Degrassi, sir. i was there. you can't lie to me.
