Assignment Name: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Procreate, IPad
Desc: A redressing of the sculpture "Perseus with the Head of Medusa" by Antonio Canova as a mischevous Jiangshi mocking his friend who's literally just a skull.
Feedback: The moment captured in the original sculpture is powerful. Perseus holds Medusa's head high as he struts forward with confidence. I wanted to play with the emotion of the stance, giving it a more humourous feeling by transforming the harrowing sight of a decapitated head to a zombie skull who just so happened to have lost its body and needs its undead friend to carry it everywhere.

Redressing the Figure
Assignment Name: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Pen and Colored Pencils
Desc: A redressing of the sculpture "Terracotta statuette of a nude woman" (Greek, 3rd Century BCE) as a zookeeper chic Bindi Irwin meets Britney Spears with a snake around her arm.
Feedback: When I first started sketching the sculpture, I noticed the way the figure's hands were pointing out in a way I could imagine a snake wrapping around her arms. When I thought of a lady with a snake, I thought of Bindi Irwin (the daughter of Steve Irwin, the Australian zookeeper) and I thought of Britney Spears' VMAs performance where she had a snake draped around her shoulders. I also wanted to include a dash of Medusa, in terms of the expressions on her face. While sketching, I definitely encountered some hurdles around harshly judging what I was doing. I had to accept that the thing I am making is not perfect, and I made mistakes while doing it, but once I outlined it in pen, I was not allowed to go back. I've also been struggling a lot trying to use digital tools, and I spent some time trying to use procreate on an iPad, and while I didn't like what I did there, it felt good to keep practicing. One exciting thing that happened was that as I dressed the figure, I realized I was using a more cartoony style. As someone who has no idea what their style as a illustrator is, that felt fun to try out.

Assignment Name: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: A redressing of the sculpture "Nymph" (ca 1805-10, possibly by Polly) as a Brazilian carioca (someone from Rio de Janeiro) drinking beer.
Feedback: The original Nymph holding an amphora and a cup gets transported in time and space to current-era Rio de Janeiro. This redressing was motivated by the contrast between the elegant fine French sculpture, a type of work that is often considered high art and commonly found in museums all over the planet, with the very informal and unpretentious current carioca street fashion. The contrast is juxtaposed by the universality of striking a chill pose while having a drink. For improvements I believe a lot or the marble-ness of the original is lost on the rendering, diminishing the the effect of the contrast. The face and feet could use a more detailed pass in regards to angle and perspective. And, although recognizable, the chosen fashion style could be represented in deeper detail for a more accurate depiction.

Assignment 1: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: For this assignment, I redressed the figure of "Aphrodite/Venus Anadyomene" as an operatic nautical diva ("anadyomene" refers to the myth of Venus's aquatic birth, "rising from the sea"). I drew inspiration from Nicholas Poussin's and Claude Pinet's depictions of this scene , both of which feature billowing fabrics, discretely clothing Venus and her attendants in Pinet's painting and evoking agitation and eroticism in Poussin's. I love how Poussin's pink/coral sheet conveys the power of love, a force that competes against the darker storms in the background. This encounter recalls the oeuvre of fashion designer Alexander McQueen, whose work is charged with such tensions. "Widow's Weeds," an ensemble from his 2006/7 collection The Widows of Culloden, features an elaborate headdress with Perspex antlers that cut through the lace in a way that feels bold and defiant, perhaps challenging the conventions of marriage and mourning. My headdress follows a sea theme with its tentacled shape, suggesting an octopus or jellyfish. The colors and textures of the Sarah Bernhardt peony are a nod to Poussin's exuberant fabric. Though not visible in my collage, McQueen's dress also features a fishtail hem, which inspired the shape of my dress. I continued to dip into couture, extracting the "sand" color from Tyla's Balmain sand dress (2024 Met Gala). There also a nod there to Kardashian's Thierry Mugler "wet dress" (2019 Met Gala). Channeling Bernhardt, I aimed for an outfit befitting a force of nature, one prepared to tackle the storms of life.

Redressing the Figure
Tools Used: Clip Studio Paint, Sketchbook
Description: A reframing of an Ancient Greek terracotta statue of a maenad into a Rococo-era lady.
Self-evaluative feedback:
The first thing I thought upon seeing the original statue was how good it'd look with a big wig, and that got me to think about Rococo. I've always been fascinated by the fashion (and the modern interpretations, like John Galliano or Dior or Maison Margiela's latest runway) and I wanted to try it, specifically so that it would look more casual and less formal, but still emulate haute couture, which is why I chose the chemise de la reine as the main dress inspiration. My research on this topic is really solid. I think I could've done more rendering but honestly I think it still manages to convey what I wanted to even though the rendering isn't very sophisticated (in hindsight I wish I made the makeup more luminous). I also think I did a good job with the shawl, as the original figure didn't have arms - didn't color the shawl on purpose, but it really adds to the character! I could've of course been more extravagant, though.

A redressing of the figure “David with the Head of Goliath”. I chose to dress him in an outfit inspired by Ouji fashion.’ I gave him scissors since Ouji fashion reminds me of the kinds of outfits dolls wear. I hoped to transform him in a way that represents a “prince of dolls”.
Made in Clip Studio Paint for iPad.

Assignment 1: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: Redressing the sculpture "Perseus with the head of Medusa" by Antonio Canova, as an experimental piece that explores the intersectionality of identity
Feedback: The original sculpture showed Perseus, a figure from Greek mythology, holding the severed head of the creature/woman "Medusa", with snakes for hair and who could turn anyone to stone if they looked at her.
I wanted to highlight his heroism, but put it in a different context. Inspired by a conversation I had with a friend, in which they detailed their struggles with identity and intersectionality, I decided to combine those features into this rough-around-the-edges finished piece. I wanted to include depth, so that even though the figure depicted is meant to be triumphant, there is a solemnity that pervades. There is also conflicting information within the piece itself: the head looks quite like the figure's own, the "sword" he wields looks more to be a giant quill, and despite his athletic physique, he is wearing bright, flowing, formal, but cut-up attire (which is an odd mash-up of Shakespearean-era medieval wear and elements of Navajo [Native American]-style garments, such as what we refer to as the "concho belt").
Note: I was inspired by these two styles of clothing visually, and did some research to make sure I was being respectful; in no way am I trying to represent these cultures as a whole, and I mean no offense!!
For improvements, I think I can mess around more with the clothing design (I was trying to make it jarring on purpose, but I think it could be more cohesive with the same effect). I also think that I can use folds and some color to show the textures of the items better, especially since the two clothing inspirations sources use nearly entirely different materials. Lastly, I had more hidden meanings intended for the severed head, but they weren't executed well so I'd like to improve on it.

Assignment1: Redressing the Figure
Tools: clip studio paint, iPad
Desc: A redressing of the model Eve with concept of a mixing of Tiefling/devil/oni/vampire in anime style
Feedback: The original description of the model intended Eve to flank the gates of hell, a resemble of remorse. So I thought it would be cool to use some elements of hell, like maybe features of a Tiefling, but in artstyles that I’m used to. I wanted to redress with fancy outfit that I like, but I also just really like the body parts of the original model. And I like used purple for skin because I like this color. Points for improvement: 1. I don’t like how the hair is distributed, feels unnatural. I should have planned it better in the beginning but I’m bad at it. The overall flow feels awkward. 2. I don’t like how I drew the line art. The lines don’t look neat enough and kind of don’t fit into the drawing. 3. The use of color turns out weird and inconsistent, with not so clear shadowing and lighting. Feels like the color just mixed together awkwardly and makes my eyes hurt. 4. The texturing for different material is not accurate. 5. Could have simplified some parts with stronger contrast instead of using a lot of color randomly. To sum up: my art sucks in tons of ways but I don’t know how to fix them.

The original sculpture The Day (one of a pair) after an original by Michelangelo Buonarroti, Italian, ca. 1600, showed a figure laying down in a leisure pose, but also has his arms and legs in a very defensive pose, with his expression and muscle tense. This inspired me to combine historical, elegant pieces like tailored suit and feathers that suggest the leisure pose which comes with luxury, with the constrained elements of harnesses and safety pins that I found connection with the muscle tension of the sculpture. My main references were early Vivienne Westwood's designs that is heavily rooted in the counterculture style punk, in combination with her 1993 Anglomania collection which took inspiration from historical costumes and elegant but over the top silhouette.

Desc: A redressing of the sculpture “Nude Female,” a bronze cast after a model by Giambologna as a 50s inspired housewife who did some crimes and is waiting for the police.
Feedback: The original sculpture shows a refined looking and confident woman in the nude, save for her jewelry and crown. Her updo reminded me of hair in curlers, which led me to researching 50s women’s sleepwear. I wanted to tell a bit of a story with outfit— despite being in sleepwear with her hair in curlers, the woman is decked out in jewelry and wears heavy makeup, as if she is waiting for someone. I also wanted to show contrast between her more innocent, cutesy side, shown through the fluffy nightgown and bloomers, versus the more adult elements such as the dark fur and lace garters. The original pose has the woman looking slightly down and to the side. I raised her gaze a bit, imagining the woman perhaps looking out her window at the police sirens outside.

Assignment: Redressing the Figure
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: A redressing of the sculpture "Spinario (boy pulling a thorn from his foot)" by Antico (Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi) as a Prince adjusting his armor before heading into battle.
Feedback: The original sculpture features an unclothed boy pulling a thorn from his foot and I wanted to change the status of the figure through dressing the figure in clothes that demonstrated importance in a certain time.

description: a redressing of the figure “adam” by auguste rodin as maximalist fashion in the style of rahul mishra
feedback: the sculpture of “adam” was created to stand at the side of rodin’s greatest work, “the gates of hell,” as the original sinner alongside eve. adam tucks his head into his shoulders in shame of his sin; his arms hang awkwardly; his body twists into himself. i decided to borrow the style of mishra’s transparent dragonfly accessory not for the body, but for the face, so that adam’s expression may be completely hidden. similarly, I drew a full-length dress to hide his hands, legs, and torso so that instead of baring himself naked to the consequences of his sin, he can instead be enveloped in nature’s natural green.

Desc: A redressing of the sculpture “Sallustius” by Wilhelm Seib as a biker.
Feedback: The thing that caught my eye about the original sculpture was its pose. Despite being a statue of a political figure, rather than position him in a stiff/strict or solid, grounded pose, his posture reads across as very relaxed and almost casual. This quality of confidence mixed with casualness brought to mind the concept of a biker at a bar, clearly familiar and confident in that sort of environment. While I like how the concept came out, I do feel like I could improve the pose a bit more - comparing the statue to my sketch, I realized that the posture of my sketch is a bit more stiff original. Having the torso stretched out and curved a bit more, and adjusting the vest to not cover where the torso bends would have definitely helped emphasize a more relaxed pose.

Assignment Name: Redressing the Figure

Desc: This is a redressing of the ancient Greek sculpture Discobolus. It is transformed into a sci-fi robot with various accessories.
Feedback: While the overall theme of the original statue was to celebrate the idea of athleticism, I found it's body movement very interesting and intriguing for me to practice and elaborate. The composition perfectly represents various body structure, and its gesture is hard to compose in a good way. I decided to redress this figure into a sci-fi robot due to my personal intersect and passion into machines and inorganic object drawing. Apart from the robotic representation, I also added some extra components on the body to further elaborate on the gestures body movement.
