Assignment name: Patterns from Particles
Tools: Unity, Photoshop
Description: A visual representation of Hell
Self-valuation:
For this assignment, I made 3 types of sprites to visualize the feeling of getting trapped in a situation. The blue diamonds are glamorous things that attract people, but it is actually blood when you touch the stones. The smoke resembles how the future is always vague and uncertain.

Assignment name: Patterns from Particles
Tools: Unity, Procreate
Description: A visual representation of the taste and fragrance of toothpaste
Self-valuation:
For this assignment, I made 5 types of sprites to visualize the taste of toothpaste. There are two kinds of “mint spice”, which are representations of the spicy but refreshing taste of mint. One is more regular-shaped and the other one is more hand-drawn, both change over time according to a gradient from nattier blue to cyan, giving the particle system more dynamics. There is also “sting & glisten”, a big sharp white star shape representing the stingy taste and the synesthesia sense of glisten that comes from the stingy taste. There’s also a bubble shape (foamy sensation) and a flower shape representing (floral aftertaste), both of which appear less frequently in the particle system, as they are more subtle compared to the spicy and stingy feeling.

Baby’s first shoddy attempt at particle systems for Uni, as well as at recording literally anything through obs and trying to save it orz
Used photoshop and unity and spent way too god damn long trying to figure out how to put a sprite into a material. vfx is not for me *nod nod*
It was supposed to represent the feeling of winter/the cold, since it’s snowing here and that’s really rude honestly.

•Assignment name: #05Particles •Tools: Medibang Paint, Unity •Description: A particle effect that I made in Unity with 3 non-primitive sprites that I've made. •Self-evaluative feedback: In this assignment I'm trying to convey the sensation of "noisy/angry/complaining/chaotic" by using these sprites I've made, which are all commonly related to the feeling of noisy/annoyed. By importing them into Unity, I'm able to use a particle system and make this effect by altering their position, color, emitting speed and directions (with random numbers).

For this assignment, I wanted to create a particle effect replicating the terrible exhaustion of trying to sleep with sickness, such as the flu (which may or may not be based on recent events). The three symbols are obvious: a skull to represent the body, a series of dripping "Z's" to represent sleep gone wrong, and a series of spirals in the background to represent a sort of confusion or headache.
I wanted to choose cool, sickly colors, which I feel best represent the flu. The spirals in the background were always planned to be large and overlapping, using alpha blending to create a sense of impermanence and try to convey what a headache feels like. The dripping "Z's" fading in and out represent hours of unfulfilling sleep passing by, and finally, I created the skull in the middle to rotate opposite of the spirals in the back, to make it stand out.

assignment 5: patterns from particles
tools: mac, canva (yes, canva lmaooo)
description: the feeling i tried to capture: what it feels like to chew 5 gum drink water with ice in it! made two versions and idk which i prefer
ngl, for me drinking ice water is lowkey kinda intense and it feels like being smashed in the face with cold but also the cold is Traveling and now your whole chest is cold (which can be pleasant on hot days, don't get me wrong). so:
the blue circles represent the calmness and flow of the water
the different colored stars represent the intense cold and frozen-ness of the ice and how it's a sharp and pointy flavor
the grey and white tumbling star/circles represent the lingering cold of the water
feedback: i do agree with all the shapes i chose and how i chose to represent this feeling. however, i think the actual animation part is clunky - i really struggled with unity so i did a few workarounds and paid the price lol

The taste of eating a candy that starts sour and turns sweet. I tried to use color, speed, and alpha to replicate the quick shock of a sour coating that melts away and makes room for the sweet flavor.
Made with Clip Studio for PC and Unity
Reflection
I would've liked to have the blue particles generated more randomly around the edge of the screen and fade slowly, sort of like the effect of the glare from the sun. I think it would've replicated the effect of an aftertaste better.

Assignment name: Patterns from Particles
Tool: csp, unity
Description: the smell of a flower tea
Personal evaluation: I wanted to make a flower slowly falling effect but I failed, I also wanted to create a chill and cozy vibe with the slow speed. I haven’t played with unity particles before so like I followed the tutorials but are still trying to comprehend what’s going on. There are parts of unity particle system that I still don’t get how to configure and I wish I could do better next time with it

Assignment Name: Patterns from Particles
Tools: procreate, ipad, Unity
Desc: particles simulating the feeling of being squeezed.
Feedback: the idea is something is sensing that it will be squeezed so it is waiting in horror for that moment to occur. After the squeeze action, it feels dizzy.
A lot of the attention of this work is trying to make sure that the moment of being squeezed is clear.

(So I'm not realizing I may have misread the assignment on this one :( )
Tools: Blender Title: Inspiration References
I'm picturing this appearing above a character's head when they get an idea, sort of a variation on the 'lightbulb switching on' premise. I chose a liquid effect because I wanted to evoke paint and art to fit the theme.
I've done very little animation in the past, so I like how it turned out, but now I'm not sure this counts as a 'particle.'
Gonna just move on and hope to do better next time.

Sparks/Flames Flashing
Sparks Changing the HUE
Flames Breathlessness
Sparks/Flames Rise gradually
In the making of this particle, I actually wanted to express more of an angry emotion, and I think the concepts of anger and flame are actually very similar, which is why I used flame as my particle sprite.
I made each particle transparent from 0 to 100, so that the appearance of the sprite won't be too abrupt; at the same time, I added a hue change to the spark, if you look closely, you will see that the spark will gradually change from red to orange.
Each part moves at a different speed in order to create some randomness, which makes for a more comfortable feeling.

The aggression and shock of having to slam on a car horn.
Tumblr media
The speed and suddenness of needing to slam on the horn from an uncomfortable position
Tumblr media
The aggression and annoyance of the driver as they hold the horn down paired with the unpleasantness of the sound
Tumblr media
The driver's surprise and the sharpness of the sound that pierces everyone's eardrums (especially pedestrians)
Assignment Name: Patterns from Particles
Tools Used: Godot, VEIKK Drawing Tablet, Adobe Photoshop
Feedback: It felt great getting to write code to bring these simple sprites to life! I spent time fussing with Godot's particle system only to end up creating prefabs for each sprite and writing code to drive specific animations for each, and I felt that I had much more control this way. It was difficult to know how complex the sprites should be- I had worried that adding the small "spikes" behind the larger ones on the arc-looking sprite would overcomplicate the design. Then, with the "woosh" sprite, I didn't know how to add detail that wouldn't take away from the simple and brief purpose it served in the animation. I also worried that my animation wouldn't effectively communicate that it's a car horn and more so a generally unpleasant sound, such as a traditional alarm clock. I had hoped the red color in the "lightning bolt" sprite would help show the aggression in the act, but I'm not sure if that gets across.
