08.03.2023 - Part 1 & 2

Helloooooo brand spanking new blog!

As you may know, I’m working through a thorough edit of Suddence in preparation for critiques. I’ve made it through two parts of the story so far. That’s 22365 words out of 49489, just under halfway through the book! Don’t let those numbers trick you, though. A lot of the second half of the story was summarized, so when I get to editing those, the total word count will most likely go up.

There isn’t much to say about the process so far. There hasn’t been massive chunks of rewriting yet, so mostly it’s been line edits and deletions and rearrangements. A few of the notes I left for myself ended up being unaddressed because upon re-thinking, I didn’t agree with the notes anymore, and that’s okay! That’s just part of the process!

I will say, if you’re leaving an editing note for your future self, REMEMBER to leave a justification for the change you want to make. Otherwise, your future self will be sure to forget why your past self even suggested the seemingly nonsensical change in the first place.

That’s the short update! Here is an excerpt.

I don’t feel better. I didn’t realize I was expecting to until now, gripping the dismembered hair, my nails digging into my palm. Something curdles in my chest, and I just stand there, trying to remember my breathing exercises, until I realize it’s anger. Deep, deep, deep anger. And disgust. And horror. Because I wanted to feel better, and my first thought was to cut Marisa away. To try to forget her. How could I ever think that? How could I be so—

My arms are burning up to my collarbones, and my ears are buzzing and ringing, and I know something bad will happen if I don’t get a grip of myself. Breathe, Dany. Inhale—

Exhale…

When I don’t feel so hot and shaky and the sparks don’t feel one wrong breath away from splitting free, I cut the rest of my hair off.

Ein besonders Schauspiel bietet sich derzeit in unserem kleinen Paradies, das von unseren zwei Zwergcochin Urzwergen, Elvis und Wusel, bewohnt wird. Diese beiden sind nicht nur durch ihre blau-gelockte Federpracht ein Blickfang, sondern auch wegen ihres stolzen Auftretens, das sie stets von ihren Artgenossen unterscheidet.

Doch selbst die prächtigsten Kreaturen unterliegen den natürlichen Zyklen, und so erleben wir derzeit eine faszinierende Verwandlung.

Der Frühling, eine Zeit der Erneuerung und des Neubeginns, bringt für Elvis und Wusel die Mauser mit sich.

Dieser jahreszeitliche Federwechsel, der normalerweise einen Neuanfang symbolisiert, präsentiert uns diese sonst so stolzen und prächtigen Geschöpfe in einem ganz anderen Licht.

Nun, kurz zerrupft und scheinbar zarter als je zuvor, wirken unsere blau-gelockten Freunde fast verletzlich. Die üppige Federpracht, die sie sonst umgibt, lichtet sich, um Platz für neues Wachstum zu machen. Es ist ein natürlicher Prozess, der jedoch die ansonsten so imposante Ausstrahlung des Zwergcochin Hahns in eine demütige Erscheinung verwandelt.

Die Zeit der Mauser erinnert mich daran, dass Wachstum oft mit Zurücksetzung oder Erkrankung und gesetztem Stopp zum Innehalten beginnt und dass Erneuerung manchmal das Abwerfen des Alten erfordert.

Elvis und Wusel, in ihrer derzeitigen Gestalt, sind lebende Symbole für die Zyklen der Natur und die Kraft der Veränderung.

Bei voller Federpracht erinnern wir uns symbolisch durch Elvis und Wusel daran, dass in jedem Ende auch ein neuer Anfang liegt.
