These immersive adventures take travellers far beyond the typical tourist trails, allowing them to connect with local communities, traditions, and customs on a profound level.
Whether it's spending the night in a traditional homestead with the welcoming Bakiga people in the south-western highlands or participating in age-old rituals and ceremonies with the Karamojong in the north-eastern plains, Uganda cultural camping safaris provide a rare glimpse into the soul of the country.
Tumblr media
Sharing stories around the campfire, engaging in traditional dances, and enjoying local cuisine are just some of the highlights of these culturally enriching experiences, which leave a lasting impression and foster a deeper appreciation for Uganda's vibrant heritage.
The appeal of adventure camping safaris
Closer to Nature
Adventure camping safaris are all about getting back to basics and embracing the simplicity of life in the wild. You will sleep under the star-studded African sky, serenaded by the sounds of the bush. The canvas walls of your tent are all that separates you from the wild, providing an authentic and immersive experience.
Expert Guides and Bushcraft Skills
Your adventure camping safari will be led by experienced guides who have an intimate knowledge of Kenya's flora and fauna. They're skilled in tracking wildlife and will share their expertise, making every moment an educational experience. You may even have the chance to learn basic bushcraft skills, like fire-making and identifying animal tracks.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Exploration
Unlike traditional safaris that stick to established routes, adventure camping safaris in Kenya are all about exploring off-the-beaten-path locations. You will venture into remote corners of national parks and reserves, encountering wildlife in their natural habitat without the crowds.
Flexible Itineraries
Adventure camping safaris offer flexible itineraries, allowing you to adapt to the ever-changing rhythm of the wilderness. If you stumble upon a pride of lions on the hunt or a group of elephants at a watering hole, your guide can adjust the plans to ensure you don't miss a thing.
Campfire Stories and Starlit Nights
Evenings around the campfire are the heart and soul of adventure camping safaris. Swap stories with fellow travellers, listen to the calls of nocturnal animals, and gaze at the stars in a sky unpolluted by city lights. It's a chance to connect with nature and your fellow adventurers on a profound level.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most popular activities in Uganda
Do you have any plans to visit Uganda to see gorillas- the most endangered primates in the world? Are you wondering what gorilla trekking entails? You’ve come to the right place at Safari Seekers- the oldest, & most experienced safari operators in Kenya. They share with you everything you need to know about gorilla trekking and where you can see the mountain gorillas in Uganda. It is not for everyone to go gorilla trekking because it can be pricey and include some rigorous hiking activities. It is basically based on your first-hand trekking experience and interest to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Where Can You See Gorillas in Africa?
Where can you see the gorillas seems to be the first question that comes into your mind while planning a gorilla trek in Uganda. Many gorilla species exist, but the mountain gorilla is the one that draws the majority of tourists. Only 800 to 1,100 mountain gorillas remain in the wild today; they are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla species. They are recognized as a species that is gravely endangered. A portion of the gorilla population lives within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park). Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the numerous national stops that Uganda has the honor to highlight. The park possesses a zone of 331 square kilometers, and is notable for its forested territory, wide assortment of trees, and mostly for Bwindi gorilla trekking.
Tumblr media
The Primates That Wait To Come Close
The national park has more than 320 mountain gorillas. The mountain gorillas are separated into gatherings, these are:
There are 10 gorillas in the Mubare group and 1 silverback;
The Habinyanja group has 18 gorillas and 1 silverback;
A group called Rushengura with 10 gorillas and 2 silver back and;
The Nkuringo group consists of 19 gorillas and 2 silverbacks
At the park, you can also expect to meet other primates, for example, monkeys, chimpanzees, elephants, and antelopes. It home to more than 350 types of winged animals. It likewise gives asylum to a further 120 warm-blooded animals including primates. A portion of the attractions and exercises in the national park are watching untamed life, birding, walking in the forest, and the most overwhelming movement, gorilla trekking.
Tumblr media
Time Of The Trek: To maintain a strategic distance from a portion of the 1 000mm of a downpour that falls every year in Uganda and Rwanda, it is best to book your gorilla trekking hike around June to September or between December and February. Gorilla permits are even more effectively accessible outside of these pinnacle seasons and numerous voyagers want to appreciate the experience without the crowds. If you do not mind a few spells of a shower in between the trip, then you can choose the other months to be ideal.
You need to have a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority for having such gorilla trekking. Daily they only issue 8 permits for any two groups of the gorilla. So, it is wise to have a booking for the same. The trekking generally starts at 8.30 AM and lasts for the entire day. It is also good to know that you can meet the gorillas for only an hour. To have the best gorilla trekking experience you must plan the trip perfectly.
Tumblr media
The Extra Activity You Can Include: It is not just gorilla trekking that you can have at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park during Bwindi gorilla trekking. You can undertake various other activities to make your trip filled with excitement and adventure. Have a visit to the national museum, genocide memorial, and local markets at Kigali, have a community walk after the trek, and have a pleasant view of Lake Bunyonyi.

Things to Know Before You Travel To Uganda
Tumblr media
Things to Know Before You Travel To Uganda
Besides Mountain Gorillas Uganda has a lot to offer, this is exhibited the variety of tour activities and dynamics in the cultural, nature, people, landscaping and wildlife. Planning a trip in Uganda is not anything like a standard tour in USA or Europe, a little planning ahead is required for a tour in Uganda because the country offers lifetime experiences. The country is also safe to travelers across the globe.
Planning a Ugandan holiday comes up with few considerations and preparation with Dav Safaris Team. You can check our website for more information and suggestions for the Tour itineraries, this gives you a great interpretation on how you can tailor make your tour in Uganda.
1. Do you need a visa to travel to Uganda?
Based on your nationality, there are 2 ways to acquire a visa to Uganda. Forest and most the Uganda visa can be obtained upon arrival at Entebbe international Airport or at the land borders. https://visas.immigration.go.ug/#/apply
As well you can apply for an E-visa at a cost of $50 and if you wish to visit Kenya or Rwanda to you request for the East African E-visa
 2. Do I need vaccinations to travel to Uganda?
To travel to Uganda, you are required to have a yellow fever vaccination certificate mandatory required to obtain a visa and should be presented upon arrival at the Airport. It is also advisable to have a DTP vaccination, Hepatitis A and Malaria
Covid19 vaccination certificate is also required upon arrival at Entebbe Airport. Uganda is only open for the Covid19 fully vaccinated travelers. Quarantine and PCR tests are no longer required to enter Uganda
3. Is it safe to travel to Uganda?
Uganda is considered to be a safe country with low crime rates. This is supported by a number of documents and testimonies. It’s advisable to look for the latest travel information when traveling to the Uganda so that you can have confidence. Visitors to Uganda are advised to stay at secure and safe places suggested by their respective domestic travel planners.
4. Best time to travel to Uganda?
You can travel to Uganda throughout the year! The best time to travel to Uganda for the safari is during the dry season from June to August and from December to February. It is easier to spot wildlife during these seasons.
The peak season is from June to September, but it will never really get crowded due to variety of tourist activities in the country and various game parks. March, April and May stands as the most challenging months to travel to Uganda. Mostly during this period the roads and the nature trails are hard to maneuver due to serious rains.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be done year round. Places like Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Kibale National Park, etc can get cold at night even in summer due to their high altitudes.
5. What is the currency in Uganda?
The Shilling is the name for the local currency in Uganda. Uganda is still a cash based country and card and online payments are not common. However most bigger hotels and lodges and even at the Uganda National Parks you can pay with either credit cards as well as USD, Euros and GBP these days. So when paying for example the $700 National Park fee for mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi there is no need to bring stacks of Uganda cash.
Makes sure you always have Uganda Shillings (UGX) on you during your Uganda trip. Small bills like 1,000 UGX are the equivalent of just 25 dollar cents, but they are worth big smiles if you give them to locals as a tip. As well you can a beer or local bureau named Uganda Waragi. Try to buy local to support local people in Uganda.
 6. Exchange money
You will get the best value for money when you exchange US dollar into Ugandan Shilling at a Forex office in one of the towns. You can also change money at the Entebbe Airport, but the rates are significantly lower. There are exchange offices all around the bigger towns and the Uganda tourist attractions.
Be aware of the US Dollar-UGX exchange rate. Some Ugandans are very ‘creative’ with converting their currency in for example US Dollars or Euros. As per une 2022 the official exchange rate is around: $1 USD = 3,615 UGX.
You can as well withdraw money in Uganda on an ATM machine in major towns and cities all over the country.
 7. What is the food like in Uganda?
Local food is a mix of matoke (cooked bananas), cassave, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, tomatos, cabbage and a sauce made of grounded peanuts. The sauce is very similar to satay sauce from Indonesia. This is what a standard local meal looks like in Uganda and you should try it in a local restaurant. Locals love it if tourists come and try their local food. It shouldn't cost more than $2 normally.
One greater thing to mention about Ugandan food is that there are fresh fruits everywhere. You can find it on the streets and it is CHEAP!
Are you staying in more upscale lodges, then often the meals are included. That means you will be served a 3 course meal every evening, which mostly is Western orientated dishes like pasta, steak, fish, etc.
A Rolex is not a watch, but it comes from a dish called rolled eggs. You can buy it almost everywhere along the street. I ate is several times as breakfast or lunch and found it to be very tasty. It is basically a chapati with egg. Cheap, fast and pretty good. A street food Rolex shouldn't cost more than 1,500 UGX ($0.35)
8. When and where to buy Chimpanzee and Gorilla trekking permits?
Secure your gorilla or chimp trekking permits prior to arrival to avoid disappointment! The permits are issued by UWA that markets them through Uganda Tour Operators to the public. Therefore it’s best to book your trekking permit (or a complete trekking tour) with a tour operator. The mountain gorilla trekking permits cost $700 in 2022 for foreign non-residents and a chimpanzee permit is $200 per person for the foreign non residents.
I advise you to apply for a permit 6 months prior to the date you want to trek. Permits from June-August and December and February tend to sell out quickly. Last minute bookings may be possible during low season. For more info read my complete gorilla trekking blog, which is also updated for 2022.
9. Road conditions in Uganda
There are a lot of road works in Uganda and although many roads improved a lot over the last years, some roads are still in a very bad condition. Depending on the weather it sometimes can be challenging to travel around Uganda. If you choose to drive yourself (which is an option) I would suggest driving a 4WD. Keep in mind that you have to drive on the left side of the road.
10. Languages in Uganda
Uganda counts more than 40 languages, every tribe speaks their own language. Uniform language especially in and around the famous tourist places in Uganda is luckily English. If you go off the beaten path you could run into places where English is not spoken very well, but in general you shouldn't have any problems communicating with local people.
In general all the Ugandans are very friendly people. It’s impolite to only say ‘Hi!’ So instead use ‘How are you?’. Even children will greet you with ‘How are you?’ They also love to touch your soft ‘Muzungu’ skin.
11. Things to do and places to visit in Uganda
We already spoke about the Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park, which obviously is the major tourist attraction in Uganda, but there is much more to see and do. The Chimpanzee trekking is another amazing thing to do in Uganda and a must see when you are a wildlife lover are the tree climbing lions. It is a very rare phenomenon but you can see them in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Apart from the stunning wildlife there are some epic waterfalls to visit. A tour to Murchison Falls is a very popular tourist destination and a little more off the beaten path are the Sipi Falls. Just about 80 kilometer East of Kampala you will find the laidback city of Jinja, where you can find the source of the Nile and where white water rafting is the number one thing to do.
A place to visit in Uganda that is popular with backpackers is Lake Bunyonyi. A stunning crater lake with numerous islands. Kayaking and taking in the stunning views while swinging in a hammock are great things to do here. Near Lake Bonyonyi there is Lake Mburo National Park and much more to the Northeast there is Mbale and Kidepo Valley National Park which are popular places to visit in Uganda.
12. What to bring to Uganda
Remember to dress respectfully. Uganda is conservative, so in general it’s better to avoid short skirts or shorts when traveling to Uganda. For women it’s best to bring an over the knee skirt because it’s impolite to wear trousers or shorts while visiting local community. You can wear shorts during day activities like hikes, safaris or boat tours, no problem.
Pack good hiking shoes for your chimpanzee or gorilla trekkings. Some parts can be very muddy and slippery. It’s also good to pack gaiters, gloves, a rain jacket/poncho and a hat. Although it’s hot wear long trousers and thin long-sleeved shirts to protect your arms and legs from scratches.
Long clothing will also help protect you from diseases carried by mosquitoes and other insects such as tsetse flies. In general you should bring a flashlight, daypack, insect repellent, malaria pills for some areas, waterproof bags and an international driving license if you’re thinking of driving yourself.
Since you will probably meet a lot of children on your way, consider bringing some pencils to give to them (in stead of candies or money).
13. Camera gear and equipment for Uganda
It depends on your interest, but avid photographers and wildlife enthusiasts I recommend to bring the following to Uganda:
Descent camera: for example a DSLR with several lenses or a camera with enough optical zoom. What I packed in my photography bag was a Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 100-400mm lens, Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 lens and a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens.
A solid tripod.
Enough batteries and memory cards.
Binoculars, but many driver guides also have binoculars in their car.
14. Quick packing list for Uganda
Here are all the above mentioned items in one Uganda packing list:
Over the knee skirt (women), Sarong to wrap around you, Gaiters, Gloves, Rain jacket, Poncho, Hat, Long sleeve t-shirt, Long trousers, Flashlight, Daypack, Backpack, Insect repellent, Malaria pills, UK electricity plug adapter, International drivers license, Passport, Gifts for children, Camera gear, Binoculars, Tripod, Extra batteries, Memory cards
With the above travel tips I think I answered the most common questions about traveling to Uganda. Much more about my 3-week trip to the Pearl of Africa you will find in my Ultimate Uganda itinerary, with things to do and the best places to visit in Uganda. Or check out DAV SAFARIS for the mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park.

There are numerous gorilla families in Uganda, however only a few have been habituated for tourist visits. By habituation, we imply creatures that have become accustomed to the presence of humans. This is also a time-consuming operation. Uganda Safari Tours has over nine gorilla families, thus the nation can only issue a maximum of eight licenses each day.
Buhoma has 4 gorilla families , Ruhija has 3 gorilla families (Bitukura,Oruzogo and Kyaguriro family) Rushaga has 6 gorilla families and 2 more for Habituation Experience and Research Nkuringo has 1 gorilla family.. These include the Habinyanja, Mubare, and Rushaga families who live in the dense tropical jungle. If you've ever seen films of humans meeting gorillas on the grounds of a resort, you've most certainly seen buhoma.
Both the Bitukura and Oruzogo families may be found in Bwindi's southern Ruhija region. The Nkuringo, Nshongi, Kahunje, Rushaga, and Businge families live in the southern portion of Bwindi.
In recent days, it has also been feasible to follow the Nyakagezi family, Mgahinga National Park's sole habituated family. Because the gorillas cross the border, viewing is unpredictable. According to UWA, the Nyakagezi family is one of the most entertaining gorilla families to walk with. It also has a larger number of silverbacks than the rest of the group.
Things To Be Done After Trekking Mountain Gorilla In Uganda:
Tumblr media
·         You may travel to Uganda to go Gorilla Trekking, but you may find yourself doing a variety of other activities as well. Just take a deep breath, and you'll appreciate to the ultimate mountain Gorilla Trekking Guide.
·         Bwindi forest is home to 120 animal species, 30 elephants, 360 bird species, and over 200 butterfly species. Furthermore, the African Bird Club ranked Bwindi as Africa's top birding location.
·         The gloomy woodland is also not the easiest place to view birds, and an experienced bird guide can lure them out of the jungle by expertly mimicking their sounds. Bird watching is also a great activity to do after going gorilla trekking.
·         There are 324 tree species documented in Bwindi, including gigantic fern trees, bushes, and vines. There are also nature walks that aid in seeing orchids and monkeys, as well as guided bird watching safaris that can be booked.
·         There is also a stroll that is highly suggested to observe several of the three waterfalls that are located inside the section. If you have the leisure, you may go for a day stroll from one side of Bwindi to the other.
·         The Mgahinga gorilla national park is also one of the few places in Uganda where travellers may view golden monkeys. I also believe that this guided hiking trip above the calderas and inside the bamboo forest was excellent, which implies that permits may be purchased when you arrive in Mgahinga.
·         Uganda, as a country, offers numerous activities to do and sights to visit, so you may regret rushing home. There are wildlife safaris to see lions, elephants, 100 different bird species, chimp trekking, friendly people, lake rides in dugout boats, and white water rafting.
·         White river rafting, village community project visits, tasting Ugandan food, quad riding, fishing, African dancing, and boat excursions to see the gorgeous waterfalls, hippos, and crocodiles. These are just a few of the attractions in Rwanda.
