Amateur sewing - Red Riding Hood
So, uh... I've sewn a thing.
Tumblr media
I'm reusing an old curtain here, it's polyester. It looks nice in theory, but I'm not even going to try and pretend it's anything else than 100% plastic. 140 cm x 140 cm square for the cloak, approximately an eternity of hemming.
Tumblr media
Behold! Two different sets of lines that don't actually say anything because I can't do math and had to do the pleating, like, a dozen times.
Tumblr media
First half of a box pleat in the making, 7 cm wide. I wanted a pretty drape for the back, and we're getting there.
Tumblr media
Box pleat in the middle, additional knife pleat on either side. When I realized that the cloak was still too wide to fit into the shoulder capelet the way I wanted it, I cartridge-pleated the outer several centimeters up to the knife pleats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of, shoulder capelet! I started out with two 40 cm x 40 cm squares outer fabric and the same size of lining. The lining is the rest of a duvet cover I began slaughtering for lining a while ago, cotton, because I may be cheap but I'm not suicidal. Don't want that much polyester directly on my skin. I sewed the squares together and hemmed them all around except for the corners where I still had to figure out how much I needed for my neck, and that got me to the yoke shape you can see above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could I have gotten away with a more practical closure than buttons? Yeah, definitely. Especially since this "fabric" frays like a bitch. I can actually do a darling buttonhole stitch, but you wouldn't be able to tell from this because I was working against the fabric. Then again, I had these buttons lying for around for far too long; they were presents from a friend and I never got a use for them. A fantasy-ish Red Riding Hood cape with zero historical basis seemed like the way to go, and I love them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The finished capelet was kinda uselessly bunching around the neck, but I didn't much bother with that because there's still a hood waiting to go there. The way it fell over the arms when I didn't spread them was a bit more annoying, so I took in a tiny lil dart on each side, back and front.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted a huge-ass hood for this. In the end, it would have probably been wiser to use the bigger squares for the shoulder capelet, but I have no regrets. Same story as with the capelet, just a lot less complicated; off with the corner and in with the lining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's how the whole mess looks on the inside of the capelet, the back of the hood cartridge-pleated down until it fit the neck opening. It's not pretty, but I really fastened every tuck twice and thrice. Then the cloak... oh boy, that nearly broke me. But I sewed it in around the back half of the neck opening so that it came out in the centers of my shoulders, and from there in a 90 degree-angle down the back. It ran out in that L shape you can see up there, not so much because I intended it but because I didn't have the best control over the cartridge-pleated outer part of the cloak.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after I sent around the poll... I just went and did the opposite of its result ^^' I did end up putting the fancy golden trim around the capelet instead of the hood bc 1st, people I asked live said it'd look better there, and 2nd @kittycatalex made a pretty good point for sensory issues. And it looks so nice. Look at this big hood. I can play such a shady figure in this. The whole cloak is a bit top-heavy because the hood is bigger than the capelet, and the cloak doesn't have any lining, but that only means that the back can dramatically go whoooosh when I move. And when I don't move - behold that drape! So worth the bother!

ok so this is on the bedding thing you just posted about (i feel qualified to answer bc i am american and also my dad sells mattresses and bed stuff)
so basically, we use blanket as like. a general term for all blanket stuff which can include duvets and comforters and other types of blankets. most americans have The Blanket which is a shitty itchy wool blanket like you were talking about, usually its too small to use and you give it to a guest you don't really like.
as for the duvet/comforter thing you mentioned: duvets are 2 pieces, the outside bit and an insert. this is by definition, but sometimes the insert isn't able to be removed. i think technically the duvet is the inside part but im not 100% sure. a comforter is like a duvet, except it doesn't have a cover and is one piece, usually its filled with something, either a synthetic cotton (cheap) or feathers (expensive).
americans also tend to have quilts, either handmade or store bought. handmade quilts are very nice and usually passed down in the family or made by someone's grandma/aunt/mother and given as gifts. these are blankets that are made of fabrics and multiple layers, most of them are multiple types of textiles gathered and put together in an artistic fashion. grandmas love quilts.
as for other types of blankets, usually people keep "throw blankets" on their couches, these are mostly decorative and can be some kind of cotton or other fabric. sometimes they're a plush fabric and super soft it really depends on who, i keep a plush blanket on my couch.
most people have a bedding set which includes a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, pillow cases, and either a comforter, duvet, or quilt. you can literally buy these at the store for super cheap or they can be super expensive. high quality stuff is usually not sold as a set, for example i was gifted a "down comforter" from my dad which is a really high qualify blanket, i think mine has goose feathers? but most people just have regular comforters, generally the nicer bedding you have the more money you have?
its also common for families to have a closet in the house dedicated to storing extra blankets, sheets, and towels. i think the rule of thumb is to have 1 extra set of sheets per bed, a handful of smaller blankets for guests, and maybe 1 or 2 extra comforters/duvets/quilts for the whole house. also a lot of people have recently been investing in weighted blankets.
this also all depends on *where* you live. if you live in a warmer area like the south or in the desert you don't really keep that many heavy blankets on hand, so you're less likely to see people living in say, arizona, using those heavier comforters or duvets, they tend to stick to single layer blankets. the opposite is also true, people in michigan will probably keep more blankets on hand because it gets wayyy colder.
anyways! hope this helps :)
tysm for the extensive write-up! The bedding discourse thickens!!
Also quilts are so fuckign cute, you americans popped off with quilts. Idk where grandmas also quilt, not in my parts I think, I think in Poland grandmas either embroider or knit their blankets, or make elaborate crochet bed covers. My mom (who is also a grandma) has knitted me a cashmere throw blanket last year, it's dope for winters or getting cozy on the couch.
Also yeah. The US being so huge and multicultural is a big part of the nuance, can't imagine people in hot climates needing down duvets (though A/C is a thing, unlike in Europe). I wonder about bedding situation in houses of emigrants! I bet people with german grandparents grew up knowing duvets, while people coming, say, from south Asia, have different arrangements.
It's all super interesting!

My partner and I ordered a queen size memory foam mattress because we've been sharing a bad full size mattress for over a year, and I've been online shopping for new, bigger bedding that's fit for a couple.
Christian Siriano Tori Duvet Cover from Bed Bath & Beyond. It's polyester, but it's button closure instead of zipper, and that was the selling point. The description said that the floral paisley is embroidery, but you couldn't tell from the picture.
FADFAY Shabby Floral Bed Sheets from Amazon. The colorway is purple, but it appears more brown. The pattern is intricate for a 100% cotton sheet set. I prefer pattern sheets is why I leaned toward this one.
Lush Decor Hygge Geo Oversized Cotton Quilt Set from Target. This one is also patterned, and a bright orange color that I've been really liking. I actually prefer to sleep with light quilts, so this one is more for function.
Diamond Pattern Woven Shag Throw Blanket in Gold from Target. I love mustard and rich yellows, and with all the texture in this I couldn't pass it up.
Overly fluffy, overly smooth and silky textured covers make me feel like I'm sliding around in bed. All the brushed cotton, silk pillow cases, and polyester blend has to be balanced by texture for me.

How To Care For Your 100% Cotton Duvet Cover Set: Tips For Long-Lasting Comfort
Investing in a high-quality 100% cotton duvet cover set is a great way to enhance your sleeping experience. Cotton bedsheets are renowned for their softness, breathability, and durability. However, to maintain their luxurious feel and extend their lifespan, proper care is essential.
In this guide, we'll share practical tips on how to care for your cotton duvet covers, ensuring they remain as comfortable and inviting as the day you bought them. From washing techniques to storage solutions, we've got you covered.
Understanding the Importance of Proper Washing Washing your cotton bedsheets correctly is crucial for preserving their quality. Cotton is a natural fiber that responds well to gentle care.
Firstly, always check the care label on your 100% Cotton Duvet Cover Set. Use a mild detergent and opt for a cold or warm water setting to prevent shrinkage and fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the fibers.
Tumblr media
Secondly, separate your cotton duvet covers from items that could cause abrasion during the wash cycle. Washing them with like colors and materials reduces the risk of pilling and maintains the vibrancy of the fabric.
Drying Techniques for Cotton Duvet Covers Drying your duvet covers properly is just as important as washing them. Overexposure to heat can weaken cotton fibers and cause shrinkage.
For best results, tumble dry on a low setting or, if possible, hang them outdoors to air dry. This method is gentle on the fabric and helps retain the softness of your Satin Duvet Cover Set or any other cotton bedding. Additionally, remove the duvet covers from the dryer while they're still slightly damp to minimize wrinkles. This makes ironing easier and helps maintain a crisp, clean look on your bed.
Tumblr media
Ironing and Storage Tips Ironing your cotton duvet covers can enhance their appearance, giving your bed a fresh, hotel-like feel. Use a medium heat setting and iron while the fabric is slightly damp for best results.
When it comes to storage, ensure your duvet covers are completely dry to prevent mold and mildew. Store them in a cool, dry place, preferably in a breathable cotton bag. This protects your Pintuck Round Duvet Cover Set from dust and maintains its quality. Avoid storing cotton bedding in plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and lead to fabric damage over time.
Tumblr media
Handling Stains and Spills Effectively Accidents happen, but prompt action can prevent permanent stains on your cotton bedsheets. For spills, gently blot the area with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible.
Use a mild stain remover that's safe for cotton fabrics. Apply it directly to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before washing. For tough stains on items like the Regal Shield Giant Leaf Blanket, you may need to repeat the process or consult a professional cleaner. Regular maintenance and immediate attention to spills will keep your duvet covers looking fresh and new.
Tumblr media
Conclusion Proper care of your 100% cotton duvet cover set is essential for maintaining its comfort and extending its life. By following these tips on washing, drying, ironing, and stain removal, you'll enjoy the luxurious feel of your cotton bedsheets for years to come. Remember, investing a little time in care can make a significant difference in the longevity of your bedding.
