Blues Mothers
Part 5 - Home
“Nice place, huh?”
They’d stowed the Bluesmobile someplace safe and were standing outside Val’s current residence, a flophouse that she’d called Home for some time now.
It was a nice place, sure, if you liked trains. It just wasn’t looking its best right now. It’d just experienced a very unusual driveby shooting. Unusual as in the brand of projectile was not usual. They weren’t typically rocket propelled.

They picked themselves up, slapping the plaster dust from their suits, and went in.
Val checked her mail and wandered up to the reception desk.
“Hey, Lloyd. This here's my sister, Furiosa. She just got out of the joint. She’s gonna be staying with me for a few weeks.”
“Yeah okay.”
*
Val got to work with the iron and a loaf of bread.
Furiosa raised herself onto her elbows on the bed. “What are you doing?”
“Making dinner. Want some?”
Furiosa’s only response was to flop back down again.
“Tomorrow we got to get the band back together” Val added. “I'm gonna quit work in the morning, first thing.”
“And how are you going to get to work? Lead Foot, Hot-Rodder, Motor Head?” Fury grumbled. “Those cops took your license away. They got your name, your address.”
“No, they don't got my address. I falsified my renewal. I put down 1060 West Addison.”
Furiosa thought for a moment and then snorted in appreciation. “That's Wrigley Field.”
Val nodded, proud but tired. “I gotta hit the sack - ”
She noticed Fury crashed out asleep.
“Hey bitch! That’s my bed!” Val protested, too late. She sighed and tossed a blanket over her already-snoring sister. It’d been a long day, after all.

The sisters slept long past daylight, one sprawled on the narrow bed, the other covered in toast crumbs on a chair.
While, outside -
“This, gentlemen, is the elegant abode of one Valkyrie Blues.”
“Thanks, Mr Mercer” replied the cop.
“I kinda like the Wrigley Field bit.” Mercer chuckled.
“Yeah, real cute.”
They went inside. No one noticed the Ford Falcon across the street. Its driver a man in a torn leather jacket, its passenger a rocket launcher. He flicked the toggle on a detonator and drove off as the building slowly crumpled.

“Shit, that’s one hell of an alarm”, Fury muttered as she sat up and coughed on plaster dust. Val found her feet shakily and looked at her watch.
“It's almost 9:00. We've gotta go to work.”
*
Val knocked once on the foreman’s door and walked on in.
“Hello, Valkyrie. Sit down. What's on your mind?”
“I gotta quit.”
“Why is that, Valkyrie?”
“I’m going to become a nun.”
“I’ll call payroll and have them get your severance pay ready. Good luck.”
“God bless you, sir.”
“Thank you.”
