Floods became a challenge after the monsoon rains in many states of India. This disaster is not new for the country.

About five years ago, during the monsoon, the Mahananda River was in spate in Bihar. The flood proved disastrous for Kunti Devi and her family. The water carried away Kunti Devi's husband.

In the year 2017, the death toll from floods in India, Bangladesh and Nepal was more than 12 hundred.

After five years i.e. this year also the floods became the cause of destruction in many states of India.

In Assam alone, more than two thousand villages in more than 27 districts were affected by the floods. Government figures have confirmed the death of more than a hundred people.

About 4 million people were affected due to floods in the northeastern part of Bangladesh.

This difficulty is not seen only in South Asia. Last year, cyclonic storm 'Aida' became a problem for America. More than 40 people died due to the impact of the storm.

Scientists around the world are warning that incidents of 'nature's wrath' may increase in the coming years.

But can the damage caused by it be reduced and deaths prevented?

Journalist Amanda Ripley explains, "I was doing a series on disasters for Time magazine. These included the 9/11 attacks, Cyclone Katrina, and other disasters. I found that the survivors of different types of accidents were largely were telling the same stories."

The stories Amanda heard weren't just about tragedy and loss. They also came to know how people react in times of disaster and how it can put them in danger.

Amanda says that most of the deaths during floods in developed countries are due to drowning. In most such cases, it has been seen that people were trying to cross the flood water or were driving in the middle of the water.

Amanda says that usually the brain is not able to correctly estimate the danger associated with water. People are unable to assess the power of flowing water and sometimes they overestimate their capacity. Actually, for many people driving in the middle of the rain is not a unique thing. They are not afraid of it and sometimes they get into trouble.

Amanda explains, "15 cm of water running as high as ankle height is enough to knock you down. 15 cm of water can stop a car. If there is 30 cm of water, then your car can float. 60 cm If there is water, you can flow. We probably don't even think that this much water can kill us."

Amanda also answers why we can't assess the situation properly.

She says, “There is a fear in our mind for situations like cancer or terrorism that we feel that we cannot control them, but something that we consider ourselves to be aware of or believe that we can overcome it. We can control it, as if we are not afraid of rain and we see danger differently.

Research conducted in developed countries such as the US and Australia has revealed that a certain group of people are accustomed to underestimate the risk.

Amanda says that men are more than twice as likely to die during floods.

One reason for this is that men are more likely to work in hazardous areas than women. One of the major reasons is men's habit of taking risks. However, not all men are the same in this matter. She says that "about 30 percent of white men see very little risk of driving in water."

The elderly are more alert to the dangers that lie ahead. But they can put themselves in trouble when they make decisions like leaving home during bad weather.

Amanda says, "I spoke to the family of an elderly person who died in Hurricane Katrina. They did not want to leave the house. They did not want to spend 20 hours in their daughter's car with children and dogs. Like he too was afraid to leave his house.

In difficult situations, many times people's decisions become the reason for their death.

Now the question is how to stop such deaths?

Amanda says that governments can inform people about the danger in advance. The warning should be clear, precise and detailed and should be repeated over and over again.

Flood prevention measures

Kees Bones, a specialist in water resources management, works for the Institute 'Deltares' in the Netherlands.

He says, "It might be surprising to people outside the Netherlands that we don't think about floods every day. Is."

Kees Bones, who seems careless about the flood, does not forget to mention that more than 50 percent of the GDP of the Netherlands comes from below sea level. In such a situation, if there is a flood in the western part of the Netherlands, then the economy here will be ruined.

He says that the people of the Netherlands have been working towards stopping floods for centuries. It started with the extraction of water through windmills and steam engines.

Kees Bones explains, "It was a time of decision for the people of the Netherlands. After that the Netherlands decided to prepare a plan which we call the Delta Plan."

Large scale construction projects were made in it. Dams and barriers were built to stop the sea water. It cost about $6 billion. It took almost 40 years to complete.

But due to rising sea levels and climate change, it seems that the task of getting protection from floods will never be completed. For this a new delta law was made.

Keyes states that one billion euros is earmarked for flood protection every year.

In the Netherlands, most of the money is spent on building large projects. One of these is the 'Rotterdam Harbor Flood Barrier'.

He explains, "This is a storm barrier. It has two doors. Each door is as high as the Eiffel Tower. Its control is entirely computer-controlled. To close it, the flood risk is assessed. What is the level, what is the level of the storm. What is the level of rain, etc. It is a very hi-tech system."

The Netherlands has also made a lot of progress in terms of weather forecasting.

Kees Bones explains, "In the Netherlands, we want to have an accurate flood forecast of 10 to 20 centimeters. Even if you can't stop the flood, people have a chance to go to higher places. So that they can lose their valuables." Safe

Through these measures, the Netherlands has got great security. Keyes Bones says that he does not remember when the last death in his country was due to floods.

Keys Bones has also advised the Government of India. He says that in the year 2017, he had also warned the Bangladesh government a week before the floods.

Devastation and lessons

This year (in 2022) floods became the cause of great destruction in the northeastern part of Bangladesh. The deaths of many people, including small children, have been confirmed. More than 40 lakh people are homeless. Bangladesh faces the problem of floods almost every year.

Dr Ashraf Dewan, a specialist in weather and floods associated with Curtin University of Australia, says, "When I was in high school, it was 1988, when Bangladesh was in the grip of severe floods. About 61% of the country was under water for three months. Drowned."

A large part of Bangladesh falls in the world's largest delta region. It is one of the most fertile areas but floods are a permanent problem here.

Dr Ashraf says that floods cause major devastation in Bangladesh every five or ten years and the government spend more than 20 percent of its total budget on projects related to water management.

Dr Ashraf explains that sometimes these constructions give a 'false sense of security'. Considering the site close to the dam and other constructions as safe, people start settling there and are not aware of the dangers present there.

They say that here it is difficult to try the measures of rich countries like Netherlands. There is a need for cheap measures in Bangladesh. This includes accurately identifying the flood-prone area and making evacuation plans.

Dr Ashraf Diwan says, "You have to build more shelters for flood situation. If you can tell people that see this flood shelter is near your house. You can go here when there is a flood situation. "

The death toll during floods is decreasing worldwide. Due to better technology, accurate weather forecast is available. But still people will be surrounded by floods. It is also important to plan for post-flood situations. Many people get caught by typhoid during monsoon. The reason for this is contaminated water. Many people also face the problem of diarrhea and cholera during the monsoon season. I think by informing people the effect of these diseases and other problems can be reduced.

Dr. Dewan says that governments should suggest solutions for the future. Local people should also be included in the plan that is made. But is this happening?

On this question Dr. Ashraf says, "At present we don't seem to be doing this. During floods you will hear a lot of noise in the country but as soon as the flood water recedes, we all forget. We don't do anything that in future. Let us save people and property."

Cuba remains an example for the world regarding the management of natural disasters.

"In the 1950s, when I lived there, there were a lot of tornadoes and great destruction," says Elizabeth Newhouse, advisor to the Cuban Program at the Center for International Policy, a Washington-based think tank.

Elizabeth now lives in America, but she grew up in Cuba and has seen what storms can do.

She says that she saw many storms in Cuba and her experience was very scary.

Sometimes change begins after a major accident. In the case of Cuba, this accident was the cyclonic storm 'Flora' of 1964.

Elizabeth explains, "Seven thousand people died due to the Flora storm. After that they adopted the civil defense system. It is headed by the President of the country. It is very effective. It covers every aspect of preparing to deal with the storm. Gone."

After this, the Comprehensive Emergency System was implemented. Elizabeth says that this is one of the best systems in the world. She says that very few people die in Cuba due to storms and floods and the reason for this is preparation. In schools, children are taught from a young age how to prepare themselves.

Every year drill means preparation is tested and then when the storm comes, everyone from big government officials to local volunteers work together according to the plan.

Elizabeth says that about 120 hours before the civil defense people start preparing. About 36 hours ago, they get into action rapidly.

During one of the most severe cyclonic storms 'Irma', Cuba showed the world what to do on such occasions.

"They started evacuating people 24 hours before the storm hit. Most people went to their friends and relatives' homes. The rest went to rescue centers. They were also accompanied by pets. Their household items could not be found if they were to be found," Elizabeth says. If there was any loss, the government would have compensated for it. So they were not worried about the goods. In such a situation, they did not face any difficulty in going to a safe place."

Elizabeth says that volunteers or officials provide help to the elderly, sick, pregnant women and all other people who cannot go to safe places on their own. Even if someone wants to stay, he is not allowed to stay in a dangerous place.

Elizabeth explains, "Their (Cuba's) record of saving lives is excellent. For example, in the event of a hurricane, Cuba has two deaths per 100,000 people. In the US this number is closer to 15. In Cuba Everything stays on track and it takes practice."

America and other countries also took cognizance of this. He sent disaster management experts to Cuba to understand how this small country managed to reduce the death toll during a natural disaster.

Coming back to the same question that how to prevent the deaths due to floods?

As our experts pointed out, accurate weather forecast can make a big difference.

In rich countries, it is possible to counter natural disasters through construction. But the Cuban approach can be effective for developing countries facing the problem of floods, lack of resources and climate change.

And plan, as our fourth expert, Elizabeth, says. teach people. This Cuban mantra will be useful in saving lives.

Apprenticeship Program Name: Radio Campbuzz Project Name: RJ for Rangdhonu and script writer for shows Program Date: Fall 2017 – Fall 2018 Program Description: I joined this program when Kashfia Ma’am was the advisor for the program. She assigned me to a RJ position for a weekly show called, “Rangdhonu”. And I had to write the script for the show as well. What I had to do was be a host for the show and the show is about pop culture and entertainment. So we had to talk about any new update on Hollywood and Bollywood. Program Justification: What the show provided was to let the students know about any pop culture and to let them enjoy some entertainment before going back to class. There were other shows but this show made me realize how fun it is to be a RJ. Due to this show, I was even awarded the best RJ in Radio Campbuzz of Spring 2018. Program Name: Rangdhonu. Program Time: Every Wednesday from 12 pm to 1 pm.

30 years of BAMBA - More than just bands After a break of almost four years, Bangladesh Musical Bands Association, better known as BAMBA, recently arranged a mega concert, 'BAMBA Live Chapter 1', in Dhaka. The turnout was huge, with the spacious hall room of the International Convention Centre, Bashundhara, filled to the brim with fans eager to get a glimpse of their favorite bands and listen to their all-time hits. 11 of the 27 bands under the umbrella of BAMBA, including Warfaze, Miles, Shunno, Aurthohin, Nemesis, Vikings, Feedback, Dalchhut, Maq O' Dhaka, Pentagon and Arbovirus performed at the concert. Star Showbiz recently invited BAMBA to participate at a roundtable discussion at The Daily Star Centre. Hamin Ahmed, President of BAMBA; Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu, General Secretary; Fuad Naser Babu, Vice President; Maqsoodul Haque (Mac), Executive Committee Member; Mohammad Ali Shumon, Treasurer; and Doza Alan, CEO, SkyTracker Limited, took part in the roundtable discussion. It was facilitated by Star Showbiz Editor Rafi Hossain. The discussion focused on BAMBA's current activities and the way forward in the face of the challenges confronting our music industry.

Aside from me having my new phone today hehe. You can see the smile in our faces, approaching the end of this enduring tunnel of achieving our academic endeavors. It was a bliss under pressure yeah. Kahit na pagod at ubos na, we have to continue what we started and make it trough until the end.

This day was the fulfillment of our finals requirement in one of our course subject - Investigative Journalism. A podcast where we will basically critique the docu made by Atom Araullo about the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in 2017. Watching the documentary for the nth time made me realize how blessed I am. Rohingya people we’re mistreated, abused and oppressed. Napagkaitan sila ng mga karapatan na malaya dapat natatamasa ng isang tao. Basic rights such as food, shelter and even the right of education. They were banished by their own country and miserably burned their houses, raped young women and starved them to death. Yes it happened and still happening right at this moment.

One thing that struck me? I complain with the life I have. I envy others with the privileges and material things they have. Little did I know that I am far blessed from other people out there. The thought that there is even more difficult with the situation were in, its a kind of awakening to appreciate the little things and the precious life we have. On the other hand, for my dad’s sisters, we call them fupis and their husbands fupas, the uncles are called kakas and their wives are kakis. This is a form of respect, ofcourse, otherwise we can just say their name and say aunti last, but this is our culture. My dad has 2 sisters and 5 brothers. From my dad’s side, I have 19 cousins and 16 nieces and nephews. Part of this reason is because my dad’s siblings married pretty early at the age of 17-18.

My mom’s family is very different from my dad’s, I would say more educational and strict. And my dad’s side is a bit artistic. Ever since I was little, I would always get lectured from my mom’s siblings; my aunts and uncles that I need to study hard and do my best. Imagine having that type of pressure at the age of 9. It's pretty crazy. Likewise, the paternal side of my family was also strict but they didn’t pressurize the living life out of me. I am actually glad I get both of their qualities, because I think it shaped me to be who I am today. I have a pretty wild and adventurous life. My family from both sides live in Bangladesh, and a few around the states. But getting back to bangladesh, everytime I went to visit, me and my brother would have a blast. Everyone would take off from their work, and we all would go visit tea gardens or beaches, and mosques. I love mosques, especially old runes. Consider it a tradition or a family thing, but this is something my family and I always do. Half the trip with my moms side and half the trip with my dads side.

Traditions are what we consider as beliefs or customs that are important in families. Traditions keep the memories alive since it is passed on through family to family and generations. It is an aspect of family. I know of many traditions within my family that have been going on for generations. One tradition I know of that has been passed on from my dad's side is once or twice every year they go to schools in Bangladesh and give them money and hope for tournaments just for the fun of that day. My dad explains to me how this was important to him and his family because they really want education to be number 1 in bangladesh. And most cities or villages do not have a way of education. With the money the school creates new places of education that allows children to come and learn, sometimes their organization sends teachers in groups to different villages to teach. A tradition that my mom’s family has passed on to me is telling stories. These stories are not fiction or fantasies, but stories from when my mom was young. My grandfather died a week after I was born, and sadly to say I never got to know what an amazing person he was. My mom's family would tell me and my brother a lot of stories about my grandparents. I loved when my grandmother would tell a story, since she used the moment to rat out all of her kids. This would happen every week on a friday. It was the last day of school for the week and I would always be eager, and enthusiastic to know the new tea. Sometimes we would be on a call which was the funniest part because some aunts and uncles would scream “NOO don’t tell them that.” I remember that would provoke my grandmother or mother to tell the story. I like living with their memories, because I know one day my memories are all that I will have. Additionally, a tradition in both households is when we hold a milad for my dead grandparents. A milad is sort of a feast for the dead. Every year on the day when either grandparents died, my parents would send food to the mosque, in return they would pray for my dead grandparents and their childrens and family members. Not just my parents, my uncles and aunts from both sides would partake in this tradition. From doing this, we bless their soul and receive duas ourselves. “Dua” means an appeal or invocation which is asked during prayer.

In conclusion, kindships aren't a thing without family, and nor is family really a family without traditions, customs and other rituals. There may be love, but only those can bring that bond to a family. Traditions bring families together, some by force, some on its own. Some learn it the easy way, and for some it takes years to realize what family really means. Kindships have their own way of binding people together.

Unlike the other dubs around the world, the Mandarin, Cantonese and Taiwanese dubs subtitle the original Japanese opening and ending themes. However, there is an exception from the original Kanto saga. The localization team used an original song with minor edits made to the opening. Another exception would be in the Best Wishes series when Japanese officials requested them to make another original Mandarin theme song (though the Japanese theme was used in movies 14).

In SOUTH ASIA/INDIA (करने है हासिल! Karne hai haasil!) DID YOU KNOW? The Pokémon anime is available in the following South Asian territories: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Cartoon Network India had two additional dubs, Tamil (தேடி பேடிப்போ மெய்! Thedi Pedipo Mey!) and Telugu (వెతికి పట్టుకుంట! Vethiki Pattukunta!).

Around the beginning of 2014, Disney bought the rights to the Pokémon series in India. However, Disney did not acquire the rights for the anime's previous Hindi dub, so the anime had to be re-dubbed. The first ever episode of Pokémon had to re-air in its new cast in Hungama TV on May 19, 2014. Probably the LATEST premiere of the 1st episode of Pokémon!

Throughout Hungama TV’s anime run of Pokémon, a number of new blocks were introduced that were dedicated exclusively to the series. This includes: PokéThon, PokéVaar, and PakdoThon.

Despite the fact that Hungama TV airs material provided by TPCi (PokéAni English dubbing company) for the episodes, the Hindi dub for the first eight movies used footage from the original Japanese version.

From the middle of the second run of the Black & White season, Cartoon Network replaced the English opening with an original Hindi song.

In the PHILIPPINES DID YOU KNOW? The country airs English dub on Cartoon Network, while they also produced a Filipino dub of the anime is more aimed to Filipinos that naturally can't understand and/or speak in English.

The GMA channel aired the English dub every Friday nights to compete against a rival station which aired the Filipino dub of Digimon Adventure at the same time. This is a very similar situation I mentioned with Brazil.

PokéMania was a special segment created by Cartoon Network to air past seasons of the Pokémon anime every weekend mornings. The segment, however, did not air continuously. Every time the segment changes season, a number is added to the title that corresponds to that season number (e.g. PokéMania 5). The segment aired all of the anime's season up until the seventh. Later on, Cartoon Network aired the reruns of the eighth to nineteenth season but not under the segment's name.

Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened was the FIRST ever Pokémon movie to hit Philippine theaters. It premiered in the country on November 13th 2013, and a Mewtwo event was distributed at SM Megamalls between November 16 and 17, 2013 for the special occasion.

Similar to Veronica Taylor and Sarah Natochenny, the Filipino dub VA for Ash, Klariz Magboo, voices Delia Ketchum as well.

In VIETNAM DID YOU KNOW? Their version of the anime was a voice-over translation (based off the original Japanese version) rather than being dubbed into the Vietnamese language.

In winter 2013, HTV3 (a well known dubbing network) created a poll on their website for everyone to vote for programs they would like to see aired on their channel. Pokémon was one of the choices, and within a few weeks, it was announced that they would air the Pokémon anime for the first time EVER Vietnamese television on January 25, 2014. An official Facebook page and YouTube channel were created for fans to discuss and take part in fun activities. Weekly games pertaining to the broadcast are held with Pokémon merchandise offered as prizes for the winners.

The anime debuted with the Best Wishes series, which is rare because most of the world have at least aired the first episode of the original series. They even released the 2015 Best Wishes calendar in December 2014 to promote the re-release of the Pokémon Adventures manga.

A controversy arose with fans due to HTV3 re-dubbing many of the Pokémon cries (except for Satoshi's Pikachu), despite that the Pokémon names are the same as in the Japanese version they are using.

When the XY series aired on VTV2, the show had two time slots. Half of an episode (approx. 12 mins.) is aired from Monday to Saturday at 05:45pm, while full episodes (approx. 25 mins.) are aired on Saturday and Sunday at 10:40am. I mean...what TV station does that???!

The Vietnamese dub had original music sung by Vietnamese artists such as “Eternal Friendship”, used for both the opening and the ending for the XY series, “By My Side” used for the ending theme in movie 19, and “Best Friend” were used for the ending theme in movie 20.

In other ASIAN COUNTRIES DID YOU KNOW?

In South Korea (헤이! 포켓몬 마스터), the Korean dub has banned 20 episodes so far, including the ones banned in Japan. These banned episodes usually included overt references to Japan and Japanese culture, especially the early episodes from the original series. This is due to the rocky history (bad blood) between Japan and (South) Korea after Korean Independence at the end of World War II. What’s really weird is that the Korean dub is actually based off the original Japanese version. Despite that, many of these unaired episodes were released on DVD.

In Thailand (มาจับโปเกม่อนกันเถอะ! ma jub pokemon gun ter!), the Thai dub was very inconsistent during the first couple of years airing the series on television. It aired on Modern Nine TV around 2008, but disappeared on the air since then. The anime then reappeared again in April 2010 with the start of the DP series. Currently ongoing is the Sun & Moon series (licensed by True Corporation and True Visions) that airs on weekends.

In Singapore, the anime mainly airs the English dub from the United States, however in the twentieth movie (I Choose You!), the ending theme was replaced with a song called “Future” by an artist known as Beverly.

In Indonesia, is one of the few countries that aired BOTH the English dub and the original Japanese episodes (with their Indonesian subs). Their dub is mainly based on the Japanese version; however, the proper names from the English dubs were used. On another interesting note, an episode that featured Shaymin in the DP series aired on January 8, 2012; coincidentally enough, was also the Indonesian movie TV premiere of Giratina and the Sky Warrior that aired later on that day.

In Malaysia, the Malay dub of the Diamond & Pearl series was based directly on the Japanese version, however as the production progresses toward the next sage, the Black & White series of the Malay dub was based on the English dubbed version. Today, the Sun & Moon series is currently airing in English with Malay subtitles every Saturday afternoons.
