i absolutely fucking love this. dean can barely even look at cas but he babysits belphegor so cas doesn't have to. and after the danger has passed he does ask about cas. he can't help himself. it's what he does. because as heartbroken and angry and devastated as he is, he still cares. he can't have a full conversation with cas but he also can't move forward without at least asking.

Dean: "Great. So we go outside, we get ripped apart. We stay in here, what, starve to death?!"
Cas, casually: "Well, I wouldn't starve."

I know I love to clown on spn for being spn, but it is capable of being good, and when it's bad it's usually still enjoyable to me
s15 premiere, however... today was the first time I rewatched it and my god. it was just bad, production-wise, story-wise, everything-wise. a couple of good moments only because of the cast's ability to bring life and emotion into any material, but my god... this after the s14 finale cliffhanger is a crime

Doctor Who: The Robot Revolution (15x01)
We're back! And we've met Belinda!
Cons:
I kind of wish there had been a tiny bit more space in the episode before Belinda decided to turn herself over to the robots. She has this moment where she's like, "my name is Belinda Chandra, and it's time I owned it" where she's like... nobly giving herself over to save the world, and it felt like it didn't have enough time to breathe as a moment because they'd literally just gotten to a place of relative safety. Like, take two minutes to show some time passing, maybe, Belinda learning a bit more about these people, so her sacrifice feels more earned? It was a small pacing issue for me.
I also felt like, culturally, we didn't get to learn much about what this planet was like before the timey-wimey stuff happened to it and rewrote the history of this world. This show can have a real gift of creating an atmosphere and world that feels real and deep and lived in very quickly, whereas in this episode it felt pretty shallow and surface-level.
Pros:
Overall, even if there was a certain thinness to this episode in some ways, I still really liked it! There are some mysteries brewing, about who told the Doctor about Belinda in the first place, and why the Doctor has encountered her descendant so many years in the future, but mostly it just seems like a wrong place wrong time thing that's got her pulled into the story, which is kind of fun.
Is it... a thing Russel T. Davies is doing on purpose to go from Ruby Sunday, a very young working-class blonde woman like Rose Tyler as companion one, to Belinda Chandra, a nurse with a bit more of her guard up against the Doctor's charms like Martha Jones as companion two, to this particular Doctor? This episode had a lot of similarities to Martha's introduction, too, what with it being focused on robot bad guys! I'm putting this down just because I wonder if the parallels are intentional at all!
I don't usually care much about the time travel "logic" in this show, but I actually thought the way it played out here was really cool! It was this cause and effect tangle, where Belinda caused this alternative history to develop by saying the name of her ex boyfriend, and then she became part of the founding myth of a place but her incel ex became the undoing of that place! Very cool and interesting.
I love when episodes are from another character's point of view and we get to see the Doctor from an outside perspective a bit: here, the Doctor first emerges as a "historian" who manages to get a message to Belinda to warn her of incoming chaos. We also see the outside perspective of the Doctor having a close friendship with someone... the tragedy of knowing this woman wanted to travel with the Doctor and then died before getting a chance go to go? Oof. It's a chilling reminder of all the loss the Doctor lives with, given the way he lives his life, and that life's longevity...
So far, Belinda and the Doctor haven't had a ton of bonding time but we see them work pretty well together under pressure, and then we also see the way she can see through some of his shit and call him on it. I loved that moment at the end in the TARDIS, where she clocked him as dangerous and he apologized for the violation of running tests on her without her permission. There's a mystery with Belinda, and of course the Doctor always wants to solve a mystery. But Belinda, she wants to go home! The episode ends with the Doctor making the disturbing discovery that he cannot return Belinda to the day she was taken by the robots, May 24, 2025. Incidentally, this is the date of this season's penultimate episode, so that's going to be fun when we get there!

Supernatural Battle of the Episodes!!
Looks like Lebanon is still going strong! As we enter the 15th and final season, let's see how it goes! However, I won't run the finale, Carry On in the battle because it won't have any challenges following it.
So let's get this started Chuck!
Chuck: Here we go! Today we have Back and to the Future - All the dead monsters of Sam and Dean's past, along with some new ones, have risen from the dead and are wreaking havoc on a small town. Sam has a brief vision of himself as demon!Sam. Also there's a super cute broment at the end when Dean tends to Sam's bullet wound ♥️

Beautiful Spouse’s Rewatch Thoughts SPN 15x01 Back and to the Future
“This is the last season?” Yup. Our blog is almost over
“Hopefully it’s the end of that cocksucker. I’m done staring at Nick/Lucifer. Early seasons Lucifer was fine, but he just got horrible” that was a halfassed jump kid. Kinda funny” “Unless he was running him over” “what in the hell” “feel like we’ve been in this crypt dungeon shit before” “might want to reinforce that fkn door” “just that easy huh?” laughter
Laughter “what the fuck” “get to the point already. Jesus Christ” “they cut their hands way too fkn much. There’s gotta be easier ways” “so if they can blast away demons like that, why didn’t they know that spell earlier?” “Seems a little…” “Is this a different birthday party than the last episode?” “uh fine” “thats a lot of acid in that fkn makeup or something” “Jesus” “so now that Jack is gone, they had to repurpose his actor or something/“ “that’s it? They have more people alive on the planet right now but I suppose they keep sending them to the empty” “we never had a season on the empty” “it’s turtles all the way down. We gotta go to the empty and then what happens after that?” “just got attacked by a fkn zombie shit and you’re worried about some guy in the woods?” “wasn’t that some season 1 shit?” “well that sucks” “They’d be more efficient at it the 2nd time. I’d watch that show” “you should have picked a different brand. Fuck chamberlain” “see?” “this is why you need laser pointers. Get his attention then start banging on the glass” “get in the car and drive through the door already. Holy shit” “just kick the door down” “of course I’ve never faced off with a fkn killer clown I guess” “thanks to educational TV, I will now know how to kill one” “And we get the cliff notes version because everything came back so it’s like a little short study guide” “how would the FBI have anything to do with this?” “what?” “talking like human camel hybrids here?” “he’s doing a good um DiCaprio thing.” “just like Pokemon - walk into someone’s house and say what’s up bitch” “wanna trade? I’ve got shotgun shells; I’ll take two poke balls. and some angel grace too” “that’s a weird lens choice for that. The picture got less distorted as he went down the stairs. It was weird” “really?” “wouldn’t he already have the gun cocked at that point? He had a weird cocking sound when they were found. Seriously? What the fuck is wrong with you?” “see whenever’s it’s sam’s fault. It’s not the editor’s fault, it’s Sam’s fault” “Don’t lie to her like that” “eardrums destroyed” “that’s good” “like you do” “Michael 1.0 is in the Cage? He’s back on the loose” laughter
Laughter “it’s absurd” “oh that’s not good” “one problem at a time” “oh he’s fkn dead” “FBI OPEN UP” “lot of screaming for not much throat” “is he going to take the cop?” “sawed off shotgun angel” “they need that for a spell or something?” Yeah they said that
“Ouch” “that would actually kill you” “could you imagine filming that? YOu’re just some make-uped chick in the pond. Holy shit that’s so funny to me. What do you do when the scene is over?” laughter
“It’s so far fetched dude” “he cocked it after the first shot and didn’t need to cock it again. It was ready to go” “are you trapping them all inside or outside?” “oh yeah more self sacrifice. Excellent” “there’s no way he could run that fast and laugh like that at the same time” “might want to keep moving. Spell’s going to fail eventually. Especially these demon ones; they’re kinda shit” “surprised Cas doesn’t have a tie clip” laughter “Thats pretty funny” “you can also go forward and backward. In a 3D maze, you could go upward and downwards, too” “This is just a maze for 90 degree corners too. There are other types of mazes. Like spiral mazes or the corn maze” “hell yeah brother. Let’s do it” “it’s fkn party time”

#that drink scene in galaxy brain made everyone else go aaaah#but i found it so disturbing and ominous#dean toasts revenge and cas toasts destiny#since when were either of those a good thing in spn @ahundredbillionheavens
Right, right! And like... I don't know. I FEEL like (conjecture again) revenge as a theme tends to swirl especially when someone's ideal future has been taken away. For Dean, that looked a little bit different than other characters. Dean needed Mary and Jack to stay alive to have a bright outlook. That's why he said that (a future with) Cas was "dead to him." Because the future was dead to him. Jack and Mary, in Dean's mind, were gone.
For John, the loss of Mary took away his view of The Future, and for Sam, losing Jess was losing his own Ideal Future. For Dean, I think we get a glimpse that he expected Jack, this invincible, special kid (who defeated Michael for him, who maybe could "make all the evil in the world go away" so Dean doesn't have to) to always be around.
"But I thought only the gun could..."
Even while Chuck was actively killing Jack, Dean was in denial about it, clinging to the hope that it wasn't really happening because only he and the gun could kill Jack. After that, in the script of 15x01* we get "Maybe we'll get him back somehow... I don't know" and of course, Dean using Belphagor to delay the grief.
It was only when Cas well and truly destroyed Jack's body, thus ending all hope of getting Jack back, that the rupture occurred.
It took a lot for Dean to want revenge. Time and time again he turns away from revenge. Even in his reversal power/demon Dean arc, he does not reach for revenge per se.
At worst, he became a short-lived Rowena-esque figure, willing to kill Sam to have freedom. He rebels against all friends and family, almost like a test. Crowley verbally abuses him and betrays him, Sam hypocritically does terrible things but in the end loves him and lowers his blade to be willingly killed by him, and Cas too won’t raise a hand to him, only asking him to stop and not to murder the world.
In the end, it is Dean’s “human/angel” family that lower their blades to his rebellion, gently submitting as family must lovingly submit to each other. (This sense of family is why Dean entrusts the first blade to Cas, and it’s also how Dean tries to explain family ties re: Rowena to Crowley.)
///
But it was Chuck killing Jack that seemed to “break” Dean—kinda wild when you think about it. Jack also “broke” the best of Cas, twisting his “where you’ve been isn’t as important as where you’re going” into flirting with predestination.
Dean’s crisis/nervous breakdown was about Dean’s nihilism and the existential crisis, too, but it was also a lot about Jack. Jack’s death was so painful that Dean couldn’t even say his name; used “Bel” as code for having the conversation.
And when they got Jack back, they were so relieved, they just… went along with Billie’s plan. They wanted to “trust” Jack, so they trusted Billie.
It was odd behavior for both of them. They didn’t wanna rock the boat with each other or Jack, and they didn’t question. I still maintain I’d rather have seen them drop-drag fighting in the library rather than toasting each other.
////
But anyway, point being… I think, fandom tends to minimize how much Jack means to everyone, hyperfocusing on the “Jack is not family” of it all.
Dean was hurt. He wanted payback, he wanted poetic justice, for Chuck to be killed by his own grandson. Dean gave up the gun after Mary’s death, but the death of Jack was so painful, it had him buying into revenge. Dean has never wanted revenge.
Jack was family, and Dean saying that Jack wasn’t was a way to steel himself and deaden tremendously painful emotions. Rowena and Sam trade more in this kind of dissociation in order to carry out heinous missions, and I think it just feels odd for people to see it coming from Dean. Sundering Jack from family was a coping mechanism.
But truthfully, Jack’s death was the ultimate thing that “broke” Dean. And Cas.
Cas was raised that to care about something, it had to be cosmic mission—to be important. So he is constantly putting his loved ones on pedestals to justify his own caring/emotions. He’s “allowed” to care if it’s a mission.
Cas partially recovers in 15x18: “We don’t care about you because you’re part of some grand design.” But it’s too late; Jacks bomb was lit and detonated. So, Cas fights death on his behalf.
Dean was raised that to care about something, you lay down your life for it; it’s your mission to protect them. Jack is stronger than Dean, always has been, he defeated Michael when Dean was too weak to do it. This time, Dean told Sam they were going to, “get out of the way.” If family must be protected, then Jack “is not family.”
Dean too comes to his sense in 15x18: “Hey, hey, hey, we're not giving up on you, okay? (to Sam) Uh... magic. Magic. One of Rowena's spells. Come on, we've got to do something!” But it’s too late; Jacks bomb was lit and detonated. So, Dean fights death on his behalf.
