Economy over the Environment!

Chai Jing’s review of the air pollution in China since 2010.

In developing countries, a great way to boost a country’s economy is to build industries and produce foreign companies’ products. By providing resources and capital, developing countries attract foreign companies to their country and start their production. These can grant the country with huge income and solve the unemployment issue quickly. However, it also brings many environmental problems to these countries. Beijing is one of the biggest examples. Since 2000, more than 1309 foreign companies set up industries in Beijing and the surrounding cities. To have a low cost of production, most of these companies decided to use capitals(machines) and resources that are not environmentally friendly. This has caused the well-known air pollution issue in Beijing since 2010. Based on Chai’s review, Beijing has around half of the days (175days) in a year with air pollution.

Chai mentioned the main cause of the pollution in China.

She mentioned that around 60 percent of the pollution contents are from the unregulated burning of fossil fuels, and it mostly comes from the nonstandard usage of resources and capitals in foreign industries. This move completely violates Article 25 of the UDHR, which states that “everyone has the right to a standard living adequate for the health and well being of himself and family.” Gaining revenue shouldn’t happen by destroying our environment.
