1962 Studebaker LARK
The Studebaker Lark is a compact car that was produced by Studebaker from 1959 to 1966.
From its introduction in early 1959 until 1962, the Lark was a product of the Studebaker-Packard Corporation. In mid-1962, the company dropped "Packard" from its name and reverted to its pre-1954 name, the Studebaker Corporation. In addition to being built in Studebaker's South Bend, Indiana, home plant, the Lark and its descendants were also built in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, from 1959 to 1966 by Studebaker of Canada Limited. The cars were also exported to a number of countries around the world as completed units and completely knocked down (CKD) kits which were then assembled at a local factory.
Lark-based variants represented the bulk of the range produced by Studebaker after 1958 and sold in far greater volume than the contemporary Hawk and Avanti models. Beginning with the 1963 Cruiser, the Lark name was gradually phased out of the company catalog and by early 1964, Lark-based models were being marketed under Commander, Daytona and Cruiser nameplates only. The Studebaker company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1952, ceased automobile production in 1966.

Studebaker Manta Ray
Owner:  Donald  and  Lori  Lacer, Junction City, Kansas
History  of  This  Car
Tumblr media
Studebaker Foundation
Both Hire and Antione worked in aircraft design at North American at the time, and they had a vision of a fighter jet-like automotive design, so they purchased a 1951 Studebaker Commander to serve as the foundation for their new space age concept car they decided to call the Manta Ray. They stripped down the stock body design and added a three-seater roadster body made of fiberglass. Hire and Antoine then began adding designs of the jet-age. The first addition was the nosecone which they designed from scratch by first building a wooden cone mold and then they cast a ¼ - inch shell. Next, they added a triple tail lamp feature which they borrowed from the 1952 Lincoln design. They kept the Studebaker 232 cu.-in. V-8 engine and the Studebaker chassis, but they did chop off some 3 inches from the frame rails in their design.
The Manta Ray Changed Hands
The finished design was showcased in several automotive magazines in 1953 and 1954, like Rod and Custom Magazine, but Hire and Antoine sold the Manta Ray to jet car builder Bob Yeakel They received permission from him to continue working on the car’s design. Their hope was to get the vehicle into circulation as a limited-edition model with two changes. First, add the body molding to a steel-tube chassis and second, replace the engine with a Cadillac V-8 engine. The production idea did not go beyond the plan to circulate the car, and it was never cultivated for mass production.
Completed Design
The original car was believed to be completed in late 1952 and was debuted before the Chevy Corvette. By 1959, the car found its way into the hands of a used car dealer in Kansas where it was traded for a Volkswagen and a Crosley by collector, L.L. “Peanuts” Lacer of Junction City Kansas. He brought the vehicle to his home and put it into his warehouse full of unusual cars that nobody wanted and there it stayed until he died in 1990. Lacer’s son D.E. received the vehicle when his mother Darlene, the widow of Peanuts Lacer, began liquidating the 120-car collection. D.E. has set to the task of getting the Manta Ray up and running again in recent years. In the years since his father died and D.E inherited the vehicle, some work had been done to it. For one change he noted was the replacement of the old Studebaker engine for a dual quad Cadillac V-8 engine and the car was repainted from gold to pink.
The Future of the Manta Ray
The car will eventually be fully restored by D.E. but for now it is still in the state it was when he inherited the vehicle. It will show up in many concept car auto shows in years to come but the last time this vehicle was known to be seen or even discussed was back in 2016.

The dry breezes of the Owyhee desert have been weathering this old Nash for decades, but it’s held up pretty well on the outside. What you can’t see is the structural rust underneath, which happened long ago - it was last registered in 1970. Much is still intact, but the missing chrome trim is instructive. Nash had little money to update its big cars for 1956, having just given them new front and rear ends a year earlier - much of what was “new” in ‘56 was chrome trickery. Few were still interested in the big Nash at the time, but the years 1954-57 were a crucible in which the modern AMC was still forming, and the plan included Nashes, at least for a little while. The ‘56 Nash shell dated to 1952, when longtime CEO George Mason was still at the helm and Nash was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Mason contracted Battista Farina to design the ‘52s but in reality, the production design was mostly done by Anderson, recruited to Nash from GM by Mason in 1950. Pininfarina’s badge and name were used to help market the cars, however. In that era of rapidly changing bodies, the look dated quickly, and Anderson was charged with reworking it on the cheap in 1955 - and incorporating some of the visual elements of the exciting Nash-Healey. The ‘55 was bold front and rear, but mostly unchanged in the center for lack of funds. In the background Mason had successfully merged Nash with Hudson and was working on bringing in Studebaker-Packard. The first consequence of that idea was that the ‘55 Nash Ambassadors came with Packard’s 320-cid V8. Then Mason died after a bout with Pancreatitis, leaving his number 2 man, George Romney, in charge. Romney disliked Packard CEO Jim Nance and saw little of value in S-P, but for a few months this star-crossed union resulted in the most powerful ever Nash, the ‘56 Ambassador Super with the 220-hp Packard 352 V8, seen here. The stampings were almost unchanged, but the wild brightwork by Anderson and his 2nd in command Bill Reddig, coupled with the V8, made it seem like a big update. But then things changed. Packard had to stop building it’s V8, and Romney decided to go all in on Ramblers. The updated ‘57 Nash would be the last.
