1954 Kaiser Darrin Roadster designed by Howard "Dutch
The Kaiser Darrin, also known as the Kaiser Darrin 161 or in short as the Darrin, was an American sports car designed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin and built by Kaiser Motors for the 1954 model year. Essentially a revamp of Kaiser's Henry J compact, the Kaiser Darrin was one of its designer's final achievements and was noted for being the first American car equipped with a fiberglass body and doors that slid on tracks into the front fender wells. The car was named both for Henry J. Kaiser, head of Kaiser Motors, and Darrin.
The Darrin was conceived as part of a movement in Detroit to compete head-to-head with European roadsters being imported to and sold in the United States in the post–World War II period. Among other products developed were the Ford Thunderbird in its initial two-seat form and Chevrolet Corvette. While the Darrin was designed attractively, it was also underpowered and, while a good performer overall, did not measure up to foreign vehicles such as the Nash-Healey or Triumph TR2. The Darrin's high price tag, lack of consumer confidence in Kaiser's viability and practical challenges with the car's design resulted in low sales, though sports cars at the time were generally not fast sellers.
Only 435 production Darrins and six prototypes were built. Crumbling corporate finances, pending loss of assembly facilities and a freak snowstorm that reportedly ruined 50 of the cars all conspired to terminate the program. Darrin bought those 50 vehicles and whatever others Kaiser had left in storage and sold those from his Hollywood, California showroom. Many of the cars' engines were retrofitted with superchargers and multiple carburation to improve performance. Six were re-engined with Cadillac Eldorado V-8 units; one of these was reportedly raced.

1955 Swallow Doretti chassis #1110 - TR3A powered.
The story of the Swallow Doretti sports car of 1954 & 1955 is a fascinating footnote in the history of the British sports-car revolution. The first piece of this interesting mosaic comes with the industrial conglomerate TI, also known as Tube Investments. Abingdon-based Tube Investments was founded in 1919 with the merger of several seamless steel tubing makers. The company would grow to include a number of important industrial suppliers and manufacturers across England, including Reynolds and Armstrong. By the 1960s, the portfolio included Raleigh, BSA, Triumph Cycles and Rudge. Swallow Coachbuilding was added in 1946 when William Lyons, founder of Swallow, sold the sidecar and coachbuilding business to TI to form Jaguar Cars. Without Lyons’ leadership, Swallow sidecar sales languished. In the early 1950s, bosses at TI felt that a sports car could inject some excitement into the Swallow brand, as the storied coachbuilder was still held in very high regard.
The firm tapped Frank Rainbow, an ex-Bristol Aircraft engineer who served many different TI companies, to design the car. He was given a clean sheet to work with, though to save time, the engine, gearbox, rear axle, and front suspension was shared with the Triumph TR2. A nearly impossible timeline of nine months was given to produce a running prototype. Amazingly Rainbow and his small team came through, delivering the car in time for the 1954 London Motor Show. Based on a Chromoly steel ladder chassis built from Reynolds tubing, it was longer and wider than a TR2 which allowed the engine to be mounted further back for superior weight distribution. Ironically, the pretty Frank Rainbow-penned body was built by Panelcraft, as Swallow could not meet production requirements.  California importer Arthur Anderson suggested the name Doretti after his daughter Dorothy Deen, who ran a successful business selling sports car accessories under the Doretti name.
The Swallow Doretti was met with rave reviews, and the price point put it neatly between the Triumph TR2 and Austin Healey 100. The car enjoyed swift sales from the start, and plans were put in place for follow-up models. However, suddenly, production was stopped after just 276 vehicles. History sometimes paints the Swallow Doretti as a failure given its short production run; however, the reality is that it was a victim of its own success. Sir William Lyons did not appreciate one of his primary suppliers building a rival sports car, and he suggested that TI decide whether they wished to continue making sports cars and if he should consider a new supplier for Jaguar’s bumpers, door locks, and other parts. The message was received loud and clear, and without a public statement, production of the Swallow Doretti halted abruptly.

Morgans are the archetype of “traditionalism” and few more so than the +4, produced for 19 years in its original run and then reincarnated in the 1980s. As with any car around that long, it actually changed quite a bit during those times - it’s just that the world around it changed more. The +4 story begins in 1950, when it temporarily supplanted the prewar 4/4 (the model was revived for 1955). With volume sports cars like the MG TC whittling away at the sale of Morgan’s three-wheelers and partner Standard likely to discontinue the 4/4’s 1.3L engine, young Peter Morgan, son of founder Henry Frederick Stanley, shepherded development of the company’s second-ever 4-wheeler. Where the 4/4 had used a ~39hp 1.3L Standard (as in Standard-Triumph) Flying Ten four, the +4 earned it’s “plus” with a 2.1L 68-hp four from the new Standard Vanguard. The structure and appearance were evolutionary and not so different from the 4/4 - ash-framed bodies on a ladder chassis - but slightly larger inside and out. Standard boss Sir John Black was impressed enough with the +4’s performance to ask the Morgans if they’d sell him the company and allow Standard to build the cars in volume - they politely refused, which didn’t affect their friendship with Black, but probably sped development of the Triumph TR2. The first +4s used the “flat rad” look, and didn’t seem so different from sports cars like the MG TD, but they were faster and far more exclusive. 1954 brought the modern Morgan “face,” with the rounded waterfall grill; and it also brought the fancier 4-seat drophead coupe (scroll way back in the feed to find one). +4s were vigorous to drive and raw and elemental like nearly all Morgans - and got faster with time. 1955 brought the 2.0L Triumph TR-2/3 engine for true 100mph capability and 1962 the 100-hp TR-4 engine (2.1L) for even more power. Morgan was no threat to Triumph volume wise, and the companies remained allies into the 1960s; it was only the cessation of four-cylinder TRs that led to the +4 being phased out in 1968-69. As the 50s went on, other sports cars became more civilized (MGA) or more track oriented (Lotus VII), while the +4 stayed more or less true to its roots. https://www.instagram.com/p/CCRUO_mlSfq/?igshid=xvj2xce077ex

Vintage British Cars of the 1950s
Britain made its name in the world of classic cars in the 1950s with names such as Triumph TR2 sports car launched in 1952 and the Sunbeam Alpine a year later. As the decade progressed, another company associated with vintage British cars of the era, Jaguar, rolled out its XK140 and Mk II ranges.
As the British motor industry revived itself following the war restrictions of the 1940s, Sunbeam entered the new decade with the launch of the Alpine. It was a development from the Sunbeam Talbot 80, first rolled out in the late 40s. The Alpine made a name as an excellent rally car, its Mk III 90 model winning the 1955 Monte Carlo rally, but was fazed out that year to be replaced by the Rapier.

Jaguar's powerful vehicles are readily identified with the classic British cars of the 1950s. Jaguar had launched their XK 120 sports car, with a 3.4 liter engine as early as 1948, but by the early years of the new decade had moved production to the Browns Lane site in Coventry. By 1954 the company had improved on the XK120 with the XK140.
The 1950s were a golden period for Jaguar as they made their name in the world of motor sports. But by the end of the decade they had introduced another car which was to become a classic with the launch of the Mk II saloon.
Joining the ranks of producers of classic British cars of the 1950s is also Ford - albeit its British operation. Models such as the Zodiac, Zephyr and Consul, all British designs, were rolled out during the decade. By 1956 Ford had produced the Mk II versions of these cars.
Other great motoring names of the period are the likes of AC and Austin. AC had produced a 2 liter model by 1950 which came in various body styles. By 1953 they introduced the popular Ace two-seater open topped sports car and by the middle of the decade had added the Aceca Coupe to their range.
During the 1950s Austin was no slouches in producing new models. But one in particular was to become a true British classic. It was none other than the Austin Seven. Launched in 1959 it was to become more famously known as the Mini - a model which under its various guises is available to this very day.
