Lecture 21: “Give it Away” - Red Hot Chili Peppers: The alternative rock band with perhaps the most longevity has been the Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP), formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983 (and still active today) by school friends Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary (better known as Flea), Jack Irons, and Hillel Slovak. Though the line-up would change over time, Kiedis and Flea would remain the heart and creative force behind the band. From RHCP’s fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), “Give it Away” hit #1 in Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and the music video enjoyed heavy airplay in the MTV line-up. The video, directed by French fashion photographer/director Stephane Sednaoui, employed innovative cinematography and was shot in black and white in a barren desert-like setting.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Defeated opponents: Primus
Formed in: 1982
Genres: Funk rock, alternative rock, rap rock, funk metal, hard rock
Lineup: Anthony Kiedis – lead vocals
Flea – bass, backing vocals, trumpet
Chad Smith – drums, percussion
John Frusciante – guitars, backing vocals
Albums from the 80s:
The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984)
Freaky Styley (1985)
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987)
Mother's Milk (1989)
Propaganda: Though this lineup didn't get together until the tail end of the decade, it's proven to be their most successful and, despite splitting and reforming several times, their longest lasting. As for hot? They would perform entirely nude, save for socks covering their genitals.
Fleetwood Mac
Defeated opponents: X
Formed in: 1976
Genres: Rock, pop rock, folk rock soft rock, blues rock, art pop, British blues
Lineup: Lindsey Buckingham – guitar, vocals, additional keyboards, lap harp
Stevie Nicks – vocals, tambourine
Christine McVie – keyboards, vocals
John McVie – bass guitar
Mick Fleetwood – drums, percussion
Albums from the 80s:
Live (1980)
Mirage (1982)
Tango in the Night (1987)
Greatest Hits (1988)
Propaganda: In the late 70s and through the 80s, everyone attracted to women was enchanted by Stevie Nicks at one point or another, even Prince. And if Prince went out of his way to try to get with someone, you KNOW they're hot stuff! Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie were easy on the eyes as well, and Mick Fleetwood got tons of action. They were also hugely successful musically.

Anthony Kiedis (/ˈkiːdɪs/ KEE-dis; born November 1, 1962) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and rapper, best known as a founding member and lead vocalist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kiedis and his fellow band members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
Kiedis spent his youth in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his mother, and then moved shortly before his twelfth birthday to live with his father in Hollywood. While attending Fairfax High School, Kiedis befriended students Flea and Hillel Slovak, who were members of a band called Anthym. After high school, Kiedis took classes at UCLA, but dropped out in his sophomore year.
When Kiedis received an offer to be the opening act for a local band, he enlisted Flea, Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons. After a show under the name Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, the band progressed and the line-up eventually became the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has recorded thirteen studio albums with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Kiedis's lyrical style has evolved throughout his career; early recordings discussed topics such as sex and life in Los Angeles, while more recent songs focus on more reflective themes including love, addiction, and loss. He struggled with addiction until 2000, and maintains that he has been clean since then.
Family and Relationships
Kiedis's father, Blackie Dammett, was an actor who appeared in over 50 movies and television shows. Dammett's autobiography, Lords of the Sunset Strip, was released on March 31, 2013. Through Dammett, Kiedis also has a much younger half-brother. During the Chili Peppers show of June 25, 2017, in Grand Rapids, Kiedis dedicated "Soul to Squeeze" to his father, who was suffering from dementia. Dammett died on May 12, 2021.
Kiedis claims to have had a brief relationship in 1990 with singer Sinéad O'Connor, who inspired him to write "I Could Have Lied" on 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, though she denied the relationship at the time. He was also in a brief relationship with Spice Girls singer Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm, who inspired "Emit Remmus" from 1999's Californication. His band also covered their song "Wannabe" at a 1997 concert in Japan. Kiedis was in a relationship with Yohanna Logan on-and-off from 1998 to 2003. Kiedis had a two year long relationship with Australian model Helena Vestergaard that ended in late 2014; the end of this relationship inspired much of Kiedis' lyricism for The Getaway.
Kiedis acknowledges in his autobiography Scar Tissue that he had intimate relations with a 14-year-old girl when he was 23, before and after learning of her age, in the 1980s. This inspired him to write the song "Catholic School Girls Rule". In the wake of the Me Too movement, the alleged actions of Kiedis have been criticized by several media outlets, including the Huffington Post.
Kiedis was in a relationship with Heather Christie from 2004 to 2008. They have a son born October 2, 2007. In March 2018, Kiedis and Christie were involved in a custody battle.
In a June 2016 interview, Kiedis opened up about his past relationships, saying that there were years when he had over 100 sexual partners. Kiedis added, "If I saw a pretty girl, I wanted to have her." When asked about marriage and growing old and alone, Kiedis responded, "Maybe it is because I never learned to live in a relationship and as silly as it sounds, I do not understand women yet. They remain a mystery. I talked about this yesterday with a friend: do we focus on finding a person who fits with us, or will we remain single? I am open to both. If the right one comes – wonderful. If not, I accept what the universe has intended for me."
Drug Addictions
Kiedis has battled drug addiction, including heroin and cocaine, throughout his life. Since his father used drugs regularly, Kiedis was constantly exposed to drug-using and drug-dealing behavior while growing up. Some of Kiedis's early drug use came from substances he got from his father, including marijuana, which he first smoked when he was 12 years old.
Kiedis used drugs for years, including during the formation of the band. A few years into the band's career, he was briefly fired due to his heavy drug use. At times, it got so bad that he failed to show up to the band's performances. One night, after Kiedis missed a performance to score drugs, the band replaced him with singer Keith Morris.
Kiedis tried to get clean after Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988, saying he would never shoot up again. He entered rehab and ended up staying clean for five years, but he relapsed in 1994, causing a major delay in the release of the band's 1995 album, One Hot Minute. Kiedis kept using on and off over the next six years.
Kiedis's last major relapse occurred when a doctor prescribed him Tramadol despite Kiedis specifically asking not to be prescribed opiates. To a recovering heroin addict, synthetic opiates give rise to strong cravings. He has reportedly avoided another relapse since December 24, 2000. In May 2012, after over 20 years of speculation, Vulture asserted that the location where Kiedis would purchase and use drugs (which inspired "Under the Bridge") is located in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, California, based on clues taken from Kiedis' memoir. In 2014, LA Weekly strongly asserted that the conclusion of the Vulture magazine piece was incorrect.

Dark Necessities is a song by Red Hot Chili Peppers and was released on 5th May 2016 as the first single of their eleventh studio album 'The Getaway'. Red Hot Chili Peppers was started in 1982 in Los Angeles and has been active since a very long time. They still release tracks on their YouTube channel. Dark Necessities is among their best songs ever. It has a unique sound and vibe to it. Meaning and Explanation Red Hot Chili Peppers has been among the most notable rock bands ever. They were prominent at a time when rock music was at its peak and they are still prominent today unlike most bands in their time. The 1980s was characterized by rock bands dominating the music scene. Their lifestyle was stereotypically thought of as those who indulged in rampant dr*g use, partying while touring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0oIoR9mLwc It was natural for rock members to have a dark side. It was only through exploring their dark side, did they come across creative ideas for music. Anthony Kiedis was known to have quit dr*gs at the time and was known to have been living a sober lifestyle for quite some time when the song was released. Dark Necessities refers to the dark issues that one has to deal with. It is not only limited to dr*gs although that is a major theme behind the song but also other negative aspects that one may have to deal with. In the song, the singer is actually embracing his dark side and talking about how accepting it made him the way he is. By accepting his flaws, he feels liberated from it. It also comes with the realization that everyone has shadow aspects that they need to deal with. A lot of people feel hindered by their shortcomings but when we realize that we are not perfect and neither is anyone else; we become at ease with the fact that we will always have problems and issues to deal with like everyone else. Dark Necessities are a part of not only the singer's design but everyone in the world. The part about Zodiac is a subtle reference to the serial killer Zodiac who about killed 37 people. In the second verse, Anthony vividly describes the issues that dr*g add*cts face in their life. They might stumble across the parking lot with no sense of self or surroundings. They hardly have time to think about themselves, much less about the image they project on to the world. The video features notable female long boarders Carmen Shafer, Amanda Caloia, Amanda Powell and Noelle Mulligan skating through Los Angeles. The injuries they suffer while skateboarding is mainly the dark aspects of skateboarding a metaphor that the band uses to explain its point behind dark necessities in the simplest of things https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Mfk0Q50d8 "We received [her treatment] and it was very simple and it was about this dark and bruised side of these athletes, these female skateboard athletes and it was just easy and simple and we were trying to do simplicity." Anthony Kiedis They sent that to me on a CD because I’m old school like that and I like to go work in my car that has a CD player. And I listened to it and I was pretty immediately stricken with my part in the song, which sometimes happens and sometimes doesn’t. Sometimes you hear a piece of music that you fall in love with but you have no idea, as a vocalist, what you’re supposed to do with it; just doesn’t make sense, the timing is weird, the melodies are weird. With that song I was like, I know what to do with this song, I think I know what my part is, and I took that and went to Hawaii and wrote lyrics for it. And it just kind of speaks to the beauty of our dark sides and how much creativity and growth and light actually comes out of those difficult struggles that we have on the inside of our heads that no one else can see. Anthony Kiedis As far the song is concerned, it was definitely among the best songs they had ever produced. This song really confirmed to people that Red Hot Chili Peppers still had a lot left in its tank and had not run out of ideas yet.
The video has amassed over 450 millions views on YouTube. Let me know what you guys think of the song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Eddie (Official Audio)
Red Hot Chili Peppers memorialize Eddie Van Halen and 1980s Los Angeles with what sounds like an old-fashioned, real-time studio jam in “Eddie.” Anthony Kiedis sings biographical snippets — “My brother’s a keeper/I married a TV wife” — while Flea’s bass and John Frusciante’s guitar chase each other all the way through the song, in an ever-changing counterpoint of hopping bass lines and teasing, wailing, shredding, overdriven guitar — the sound of a band in a room, still pushing one another. keeping your head down, the rain beat down on the red raincoat you slipped on that morning, the usually sunny l.a. sky now a dark gray, a cool breeze brushing against your crimson cheeks. your school things were most likely getting wet, but at some point, you stopped caring, much like many other things you once cherished, which now seemed bleak in your reddened eyes. everything was covered in a constant cover of gray, your optimistic outlook on life now turning into those of your mother’s. why hadn’t you said yes to going to jessica’s? why were you the one to find your mother face down in a pool of her own blood? why did she have to take her own life in such a horrendous way? why hadn’t you noticed before?
you shoulders hung with the weight of your guilt despite your family and multiple psychiatrists telling you that you had done nothing wrong. they told you your mother was at fault for not telling you, for not getting the help she needed and deserved, for leaving you behind to live with your grandmother. how you hated to look into your grandmother’s eyes since the day it happened. she tried to be strong for you, you could tell, but once you looked at her, she burst into tears. every time she looked at you, she saw her daughter. your mother’s eyes were your own, and each day she saw the life be sucked out of them much like she saw within your mother’s. she was afraid of losing you too, making appointments with a therapist in order for you to talk about your thoughts, your feelings, but each time, you just brought over a drawing. one that was done in simple India Ink, the graphite of a pencil not dark enough to show your true emotions. you refused to talk, afraid that if you opened your mouth, you would talk about everything and would never shut up.
the more drawings you gave, the more and more the therapist noticed how darker and more obscene they got.
your world was dead.
you envied your aunts, uncles, and cousins for still having their mom, hated the way that your school friends would talk about their parents, how they father gave them this and how their mother gave them that. after christmas break, everyone began talking animatedly about what they received for christmas, whether it was money, a new rotary telephone (one girl got a canary yellow one, just like she wanted), or new clothes. one of your classmates turned to you, “what did your parents give you for christmas?”
how were you going to tell them that your mother committed suicide and your father was an alcoholic who walked out of your life years ago? you just laid your head on your arms, wanting the teacher to begin the lesson so you didn’t have to bear the embarrassment of people bugging you about the presents. yes, you did get presents from your family in order to get your mind of your mom, but it was sort of alright until one of your aunts gave you a perfume bottle, and upon closer inspection, you noticed that it was your mother’s signature scent.
you had run to your room, tears leaving wet tracks on your cheeks, sobs racking through your body as thoughts of your mom brought back painful pangs in your chest, your heart beating wildly against your ribcage. a copy of maya angelou’s i know why the caged bird sings sat on your night table, driving you insane at the orange cover, the black bird in mid-flight. picking it up, you chucked it at the wall, the bookmark flying out from its designated spot. the caged bird doesn’t sing, you thought. the caged bird dies.
for years this continued, the book still on the exact spot it had landed when you threw it, collecting dust as your room stayed in pristine condition. if it weren’t for your family coming over to help you, it would be a pigsty by now. somehow, however, you were able to control your emotions a little better, making the days seem a little easier and more bearable to go through, and the thoughts of your mother’s dead body were pushed to the back of your mind.
Tumblr media
in your sophomore year of high school, you had met anthony, a charismatic senior with a crooked smile and a trick up his sleeve. on days where you were not able to control your emotions as well, he held you, letting you cry into the crevice where his shoulder and neck meet, his hands cradling your head and rubbing your back. he managed to make you talk after years of being known as the mute, his little jokes and twisted tales able to rise a small out of your once glued lips. something about him made you feel warm inside. people always said that the person you loved the most will make butterflies come alive in your belly, but you realized that wasn’t the truth for you. every time you thought about or spoke to anthony, your heart swelled even more, leaving you with a euphoric feeling as you held on to either him or the sweatshirt he gave you on an unusually cold day. perhaps it was his nonchalant demeanor or his cocky attitude, or even the musky, vanilla smell that was characteristically him, but every part of you fell in love with him and his existence. he was an angel come to life.
Tumblr media
it was his graduation day when he first kissed you. once caps were thrown and pictures were taken, he ran up to you, grabbed your cheeks, and planted his lips on yours. his lips were so soft, in contrast to the muscular body he hid beneath the button-up shirt he wore, you melted into his arms, pressing yourself against him, grabbing on to the lapels of his shirt. you had waited for this day for what? three weeks? six months? a year? no matter how long, you felt all your nerves release as he pulled away, staring at you with such love and adoration, it looked like he was staring at a goddess come to life.
your breaths mingled, brushing softly over the soft skin of your lips, minty as you brought him back in, deprived of something you longed for for a while. this was a seal of your relationship. at some point, you began to wonder if you were just another one of anthony’s playthings, ready to be thrown out the second he got bored of you.
the sun shone brightly on the two of you, a moment of celebration only you two could see.
Tumblr media
it was a december when he broke up with you. it was in the year of what? 1995? '96? you didn’t remember, and didn’t want to remember, as your heart continued to break as those last moments replayed in your head like a broken record.
you had been there for him through everything.
when the band was first formed, their first record, their first live national tv performance, hillel’s death, anthony’s sobriety. everything. yet he deemed you no longer important in his life as he broke your heart. somehow, despite your tear-streaked face, he continued to say that he no longer loved you, that he had fallen in love with another.  he had kissed you one last time that day. held you close, hands on your cheeks, warming them even more, and you could feel it. there was no more passion left. it seemed like to him, you were an obligation, a setback in life. no longer did his heart beat for you. how could he have fallen in love with another when you had given him everything you had? your virginity, your heart, your mind, your love.
he just took it for himself and now. . . you were being thrown to the streets. god, you didn’t go to college, had no job, no money of your own, purely depending on him, and he gladly supported you through the years, giving you an allowance basically. you had to move in with your grandmother again as you took up classes at the local community college in cyber. . . something. again, you stopped caring about the world. what had you done in order for him to fall out of love with you? you were supportive of his decision, supportive of him when he was going through withdrawal symptoms when he stopped taking drugs, there by his side again when he relapsed, warning him of the consequences and reminding him of his hard work years prior.
laying down on the bed, you took a deep breath as your hand was placed over your heart, imagining the broken pieces still trying to keep you alive. with anthony, the once gray world turned bright again, optimism making every day more bearable until you no longer had to bear it.
underneath you sat the sheets that anthony once slept under, holding you close to his body as the two of you had your usual late-night talks, talking about the future, about one day marrying each other, having children, grandchildren, and growing old together. now, these sheets held tears and broken promises whispered long ago, long when you were still young and a new optimistic.
i know why the caged bird sings stares at you from the floor.
the caged bird does not sing. the caged bird dies.
