Harry came from one of the most powerful lines of fire mages in the country. He was supposed to be a natural at magic, a prodigy, even.

But instead he was in the X-Factor contestant house kitchen at two in the morning, wearing only his pants, and he had just set the stove on fire while making snacks for his bandmates and the boy he was in love with.

How To Post Your Fic

There are three ways (that I know of) to fulfill your assignment and post to the collection:

1) Through “My Assignments”

This is the way I usually post my assignments. From the AO3 site, hover over your username in the upper-right corner and click on “My Assignments”

On this page, find the assignment for the 1D Canon Based Fic Exchange, and click “Fulfill”

This will bring you to the fic posting form, where you can fill in the applicable tags, characters, ratings, pairings, etc. You can use the tags your prompter used, or you can add (or remove) some as seems appropriate for your fic.  Because you’re posting through the assignment, the fic will automatically be set to fill the assignment

2) Through “My Assignment” in the Exchange Profile

From the 1D Canon Based Fic Exchange profile, click on “My Assignment” in the sidebar on the left. 

On the Assignment page, click “Fulfill” on the top right.

Just like the previous way, this will bring you to the fic posting page, and again, because you’re posting through the assignment, the fic will automatically be set to fill the assignment

3) By posting a New Work

From the AO3 site, hover over "Post” in the upper-right corner and click on “New Work”

This will bring you to the fic posting page, but since you’re not going from an assignment, the site will assume that it is not fulfilling any particular assignment. Scroll down to “Associations” and under “Does this fulfill a challenge assignment” click the box for the 1D Canon Based Fic Exchange.

Then fill out the rest of the form as normal.

1D Canon Based Fic Exchange!!!

Do you love canon-divergent fics? Do you have lots of headcanons that you’d love to see adapted into fics? Are you just looking for another fic exchange to participate in now that 1D is on hiatus and you have too much extra time on your hands? Welcome to the 1D Canon Based Fic Exchange, an exchange for canon compliant and canon divergent fics based on the members of One Direction!

For those of you who have never participated in an exchange before, it’s a lot like a Secret Santa gift exchange. You will send in three (or more!) prompts, and will receive an assignment of three (or more!) prompts to choose from. A few months later, you submit your fic, and receive a fic based on one of your prompts in return.

Schedule

March 21st – sign ups open April 15th – sign ups close April 25th – assignments sent out June 15th – check in date (this is not meant to be a “you should have written X number of words by now,” this is just to make sure you haven’t gotten too busy or forgotten. If we need pinch hitters, the earlier we know the better) August 1st – fics due August 7th – fic reveal begins

Rules

Please send in at least three prompts. This helps to give your assigned writer options to choose from. Your prompts can be simple or detailed.

Any pairings are allowed, as are no pairings.

When signing up for the exchange, please fill out this form with your tumblr, AO3, and email, so we have a way to contact you if necessary.  

This exchange will be anonymous until after fics are posted, so please don’t reveal your identity early! If you have any questions for your giftee, we encourage you to send them through us.

Fics should be at least 4,000 words long. There is no maximum length – go wild!

Fics should be betaed and if necessary britpicked. We will be compiling a list of volunteers specific to this exchange, but in the meantime, the lovely @nottooldforthisship has compiled a list here. These lists are just to help you if you’re looking for a beta; you do not have to use someone specifically from them.
