Earth will be hosting a new guest this fall. No, it's not an alien. It's an asteroid. The space rock, which has been named “2024 PT5,” has been traveling along its normal path around the sun, but will be temporarily pulled into Earth's gravitational orbit later this month. The object, which is around 33 feet long, was first spotted by researchers in South Africa, who wrote about it in the journal Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society this month. Some scientists have described 2024 PT5 as a “mini-moon.”

Starting today, September 29 ❣️❤️ a 33-foot (10 meters) wide asteroid will temporarily begin orbiting Earth. Earth’s gravity will capture this mini-moon until November 25, when the sun will once again pull it away and back into a sun-centered - or heliocentric - orbit. As of October 9th, 2024, Earth has a new tiny bonus moon!! Its name is "2024 PT5" and it's only ten meters wide, so far too tiny for us to see from here. However, we can rest assured that we have a little guest moon for the next two months!

full moon creature?? today? yes! today earth is getting a mini moon! i’m super super excited, you can’t see 2024 PT5 without a good strong telescope (which i don’t have) but i’m going to look outside and say hello anyway :-D this little guys going to be here until november 25th. welcome to earth little buddy!!

Moon of the Day

This technically isn’t a moon, but I thought that it would be a good one to make one of these on.

Depicted in the picture above is the orbit of an asteroid called 2024 PT5. On September 29th of this year, it entered our orbit and will stay here until November 25th.

A lot of people are calling this a “temporary moon” of Earth, but really it’s just an asteroid that got launched out of the asteroid belt, and just happened to cross paths with the Earth.

This asteroid has a 36 foot diameter, and is to small to see with the naked eye, so if you want to see it, you’ll have to use a telescope.

I don’t have very much information here, but I need to do other stuff before it hits 12:00, so that’s my excuse. Anyway, since I started this blog, I wanted to make one of these on 2024 PT5 before it left our orbit, so here you go:)

earth has a temporary second moon and while 2024 PT5 is good for documentation I want it to have a nicer name.

I’m calling it ‘Ikana’- Choctaw for ‘friend’, because it’s keeping our permanent moon company
