For my project this week, I thought it would be fun to make a girl that would typically live in the city. As the girls aesthetic is bold reds and blacks the background I choose is the complete opposite. It is colorful and full of life just like how a bustling city filled with opportunity is in real life.

Attendance:

1. Beret: the beret hat originates from the Basque region, which spans the French and Spanish border. Traditionally, the Basque berets were made from wool that would felt when exposed to rain, creating a snug cap. 2. Kiwi: I learned that the kiwi fruit originated in Yangtze Valley in central China. Historically, they were valued for their nutritional and medicinal properties and remain a local delicacy.

3. Pear: in the article I read I found this specifically to be interesting. In the Odyssey, the Greek poet praises pears as a gift from the gods. In Roman mythology, Pomona, the goddess of fruit, held a revered place in the pantheon, and Roman farmers recorded advanced techniques for pear cultivating and grafting.

4. Red lipstick: over 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, red lipsticks were made from crushed gemstones. Later, ingredients like red algae and fish scales were used. The first molded lipsticks, similar to today’s were invented by Abu Al-Qasim Al-Zahrawi during the Islamic Golden Age.

5. Shopping bags: in 1871, Margaret E. Knight invented a machine for flats bottomed paper bags, improving capacity. In 1883, Charles Stilwell’s machine added pleated sides for easier folding and storage.

6. Perfume: perfumes date back thousands of years, used in ancient Egypt, Rome, Mesopotamia, and Persia for hygiene, ceremonies, and as symbols nobility.

7. Starbucks: Starbucks began in 1971 in Seattle’s Pike Place Market offering roasted coffees and teas. The shop quickly became a global sensation.

8. Bag charms: I learned that in the Neolithic Era leather bracelets were decorated with bone, shell, wood, and other materials as early forms of personal style. In ancient Egypt, these charms evolved into symbols of protection and good luck. Today they are still used to show off personal style.

Research Assignment 3#: 

Alessandra Sanguinetti

Alessandra Sanguinetti is an American photographer born in New York in 1960 then moved to Argentina and lived there from 1970 to 2003. Her interest in photography came when she was 9 after looking in her mom's collection of books. Later she studied Anthropology at the University of Buenos Aires and General Studies at the International Center of Photography. In 1996 she worked on a book called On the Sixth Day which focused on farm animals' life and their cycle of life. While working on this project she was able to follow two girls who also lived on the farm and was able to photograph them growing up in 5 years on their daily lives. The next book became “The Adventures of Belinda and Guille and the Meaning of their Enigmatic Dreams” Her style of photography, like many others, focuses on making it look like a documentary and making sure it's very real with not filters.

When looking at her work, I could tell she had an interesting style of photography as while it is in a documentary way, she captures more of the cycle of life in general. ‘On the Sixth Day’, Sanguinetti captured the cycle of death with each photo of some of the animals in horrific ways. In “The Adventures of Belinda and Guille and the Meaning of their Enigmatic Dreams” she depicts life as the beginning with Belinda and Guille growing from girls to ladies.

Week 6: Architectural Elements around Milwaukee

I have lived in Milwaukee for around a year and a half now. That’s a pretty short time and I know there is still so much for me to explore. But I think there’s some value in being newer to the city, yet vaguely familiar. I am beginning to recognize where I am and effectively navigate around the city without having my nose in google maps the whole day.

As I was saying, I don’t have recent photos of my explorations. But I did draw some sketches, first from memory, then from online research and using photo references to make developments. I have to say- doing it this way was effective for me. I identified what truly stands out the most to me architecturally. When considering elements of architecture around Milwaukee that are most memorable, this might differ from person to person based on their experience, but, I think that can be an indicator of what the stronger designs are.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is, to me, one of the most distinct buildings around. Its official name is The Quadracci Pavilion and it was designed by Santiago Calatrava inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style architecture. It’s said to respond to the weather, the water, and the wind, calling sort of to the narrative of change and flow. 

The Phister Hotel will forever be iconic in my mind. I personally have a knack for buildings that are old. But investigating them further and learning about influences and eras has also deepened that interest. The Phister was designed by architect Henry C. Koch, and it became functional in 1893. The design is classified as Romaneque revival, and that came with a sense of roundness to parts of the structure like arches, and lots of use of brick. There are floors on top of floors, it’s relatively tall and fits in downtown amongst other tall buildings, and the first floor has large windows with arched panels on top of each one. The brick is articulate and patterned. Man… the masonry!
