WEEK 1
INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA STUDIES
hi!!! Jiya Manubarwala here!
I'm from CP Goenka International School, Oshiwara, studying in AS level, and I've taken media studies as a subject. Why did I choose this subject? Well, it's pretty interesting, for one. I've also always had a love for photography, scripts, different camera shots, and how movies are made; the things that happen behind the camera. I also have a knack for creative writing and directing.
What we've done so far in media studies is learn about different camera shots, angles, and movements. We also practiced how to use the camera and take the shots.
The topics we have learned are Camera shots, angles, movements, composition, mise-en-scene, sound, and editing. We also learned about script writing and screenplays.
The project that we have to do this year is to create a 2 minute opening scene of a film. My classmates and I will be divided into groups and work together. Through this blog, I will be documenting the process of making the 2 minute opening scene, right from the beginning to the end.

2 minute .film - final
Not at all what I wanted to accomplish with my film. Still needed a lot of work as many scenes are missing but I think there is some improvement from last time.
My backgrounds need more work however I did like the source of my inspiration for the designs (artwork I saw at Saatchi gallery)
I thick I need to start working with some better animation programs in order to obtain some better resulta and push myself further

Filming woes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a collection of images showing the ultimate struggle - filming the stop motion! There’s me running around tho get extra props like the potted plant which was part of a REAL TREE as well as me sticking a pencil in my character’s eye to try and get it to look a certain way :D
There’s also some shots from inside of Dragon Fram (stop motion software) showing the super useful dope sheet and what the characters look like to me on screen whilst I’m filming with the camera.

Second Draft Character Sheet
This is my second draft for my 2 minute film. I added in an outline that match their colour schemes and added in highlights. I also took inspiration from big mouth when it came to the eyes to help make the characters look more interesting.

2 Minute Film 250 Reflection
The 2-minute film went reasonably well I found. As something that was an experiment, I found it really interesting experimenting and trying a completely different way of constructing a piece of animation than what I’m used to. I found the method very difficult there were lots of parts to the animation and method that I strongly disliked. I found the style of the cutouts was really good it allowed for my drawings to be shown in a way that actually resembles them in a way that I want them to, but the movement of each individual entity didn’t really turn out how I wanted it to. Granted, I’m sure there are lots of things that I could've done differently throughout the process but I still feel like the film had character and people seemed to enjoy it anyway. If I was to change anything about the film I’d maybe do it with a keyboard and mouse and an actual computer rather than a laptop, and with time I would work a lot more on some of the movements that just didn't work, I found lots of cool ways to get around difficulties that I encountered which I could even use when I possibly try to make a film using the same kind of method. I think with a lot more practice and better technology it would be a quick way to produce a piece of animation that I’m proud of. All in all, creating the film was actually really fun (kind of), the end product I'm proud of but the way to get there could be worked on. I think the combination of real-life sketches that have been photographed works really nicely when animated in a piece of software like after effects. There are lots of parts that I would do differently but as an experimental sort of piece, I think it definitely came out the way I wanted it to. I feel like it does have that element of old school theatre in it with the small movements that build a scene using layering e.g. the waves. But yeah I’m proud of how it turned out and may use a method like this again, with possibly some other aspects of animation introduced.

2 minute film - notes
Communication is difficult online, i dont think i managed it well as i havent been able to organise a day where my team mates and i come together to put everything together. I believe if we had more contact face to face in the studio we would've worked better and maybe have a unified outcome.
I think if i used my time more wisely (i had long covid as well so my health was not the best) I could have had a better film. Im satisfied with what i have , my only regret is not completing it the transition scenes inbetween the past&present and future.

Character woes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some images just showing my work on my characters in terms of sculpting their heads from balsa wood and attaching the felt for their skin. Also just showing how I did their hair using wool yarn and dressed them in clothing using the glue gun (because my first attempt at sowing failed me and the dress ripped) and then posing them in the set to see how epic they look - epicness rating 9/10 :D
One problem I did find when filming however was that my wife character’s many layers of bandage to give her a slightly more pudgy midsection actually made her more difficult to bend. So, in future I will be wary of the ways I cover areas I want to be more dynamic and malleable.

Spider Tests
I got a video and used it in the background and drew every 10 frames and added aspects of my character to it. This really helped to understand how jumping spiders move and the little movements they do before jumps or how they look around their environment.
