Pick Tumblr's Favorite Pokemon, Day 190!!!
We're in the final stretch! With only 9 pokemon left to be disqualified before we have our winner, the Dragonfly Cave is finally giving me batches of less than 10 pokemon. That means that in order to move on, the pokemon are looking to get 1/N of the votes, where N is the number of pokemon in this poll. Today, the pass point is 1/3, or 33.3%. So...
Tumblr media
Also, congrats to yesterday's winner!

Swordswoman Showdown Round 3
Malenia (Elden Ring) vs Xena (Xena: Warrior Princess)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Better here in a "preferred character" sense, not "who would win in a fight")
Propaganda below cut
Malenia
She is arguably the hardest boss in any Fromsoft game.; She is the favorited boss of Animal from the Muppets.
"Arguably" the hardest boss in any fromsoft game? You don't even know. She is OBJECTIVELY the hardest boss in any fromsoft game. On march 1st 2023, a bit more than a full year since the game's release, From Software released the stats on the amount of attempts each boss took for the players collectively. As of march 1st 2023 Malenia has killed the players 329.000.000 times. That's 10 Tarnished every second. That's almost the entire population of the United States. Malenia is also an optional boss in a secluded area hidden away from everyone. According to PlayStation trophy statistics, only 37.9% of people who ever bought the game managed to even REACH Malenia in the first place. Which means among those 329.000.000 people she has obliterated were only the most dedicated of Fromsoft fans. Only 33.3% of people even managed to beat her. That number also includes everyone who beat her with summons, which makes her significantly easier. This means out of all people who bought the game on PlayStation 4 or 5 and reached Malenia which is about 3 million people, 377.000 just fucking dropped her, they didn't even do it with summons. Difficulty aside. Malenia is also extremely pretty and has the softest lips, her Goddess form looks like a painting. She fights with elegance and style unrivalled by any boss in the game, dancing through the battlefield with deadly, fluid motions. Malenia is also 256cm or 8'4" tall. Huge woman.
post let me solo her
#malenia is 8'4“ flat chested and broad shouldered#she kills you with incredible grace and poise#trans icon#id let her Waterfowl Dance on me and Infect Me with her Scarlet Rot...
#malenia is so dedicated to the sword it mends her failing body. she lives by fighting#her strongest attack is a technique that halts the progress of her terminal illness#i can never stop thinking about that. by all means she couldve rotted into a mile of mush before the game started#but she persists!! she persists!!!
#malenia blade of 15 layers of contradictory goals and personality traits summed up in like twelve total lines of dialogue#she's a stupidly good character but shes also a woman who did horrible things in a game with a deliberately vague narrative#so everyone just enters What A Bitch / Step On Me mode with her#as they are wont to do. the lowlives.#anyway what would happen if you hated yourself and successfully became someone who can do plenty of good#and yet the only way to live on and keep doing good would be to embrace the self who causes so much pain#but there's nothing left. so you wait and you rot and you keep telling yourself that you're still the self you love#and then you have to do it again. and now your conflictual agony is over because clearly you lost yourself long ago#and you look up knowing that you're the danger you've always feared you were. and you smile#and turn john eldenring into filet in 2 seconds flat
Xena
Warrior Princess
She wields a sword and chakram. Just had to submit a biconic swordswoman.
i love her. she made me gay as a kid. Anyway, her weapon of choice is her sword, she is obviously very good with it
#unfortunately i have to choose and i have to choose xena#a) utena had no warcry. b) xena fought gods. c) xena has kickass goofy comic book combat which is my favorite
xena didn’t just fight gods. she fucked up a girl’s life so bad that she (calisto) devoted her entire being to destroying everything that xena loved that ended up with calisto becoming a god in order to destroy xena, which didnt work because xena entombed her in lava. and then when xena and gabrielle encountered calisto in the (christian) afterlife (different from the greek one which they also fought her in), calisto dragged gabrielle to hell so xena became an archangel in order to save gabrielle and then sacrificed herself in order to undo all the harm that she did in calisto’s life and then when not!jesus (played by timothy omundson) revives xena and gabrielle, calisto impregnates xena with the reincarnation of calisto’s soul in order to end the cycle of hate. xena doesnt just fight gods. she creates and destroys them
#this isnt even mentioning her fighting julius ceasar several times#telling brutus that caesar is not his friend#xena and gabrielle’s souls reincarnating across centuries in order to kick ass and fall in love all over again#or the time xena became a god but tbh that ep is kinda ‘uhhhhh…..’ even if they did hire a consultant for it
#I think everyone here knows to vote for Xena. I think a couple people here might have some propaganda for Xena saved already#everyone remember that Xena/Gabrielle is CANON and that's a pretty big deal also#(does anyone have that Xena Loves Trans People interview around because that would also make good propaganda)7:47 PM

Best Pokémon Rival Tournament- Stats Breakdown!
This tournament has been pretty wild- easily the most popular on the blog so far, and very interesting from a stats perspective! So if you wanna know some of the nitty gritty, take a look at this post for details on how everyone did.
Otherwise, stayed tuned for more details on the Best Protagonist Tournament coming soon, and don't forget to check out some of the polls regarding the format of it.
Click the read more for the numbers!
As I said, this tournament was the most popular on the blog so far, with a much higher overall vote total- the combined number of votes was 20,353 (the previous most voted on tournament had 13,981). With a total of 28 matches, this means the average number of votes per match was 727- again, higher than any other tournament before it!
But let's now take a look at individual contestants- here's how everyone stacks up in terms of their average vote total per match.
Hop- 687 (687 votes in 1 match)
N- 669 (3344 votes across 5 matches)
Kieran- 538 (538 votes in 1 match)
Nemona- 536 (2681 votes across 5 matches)
Wally- 485 (970 votes across 2 matches)
Arven- 435 (2177 votes across 5 matches)
Marnie- 426 (1278 across 3 matches)
Blue- 355 (1774 votes across 5 matches)
Gladion- 346 (1039 across 3 matches)
Cheren- 335 (335 votes in 1 match)
Silver- 322 (967 votes across 3 matches)
Carmine- 321 (642 votes across 2 matches)
Penny- 316 (631 votes across 2 matches)
Bianca- 291 (582 votes across 2 matches)
Hugh- 270 (270 votes in 1 match)
Hau- 241 (241 votes in 1 match)
Shauna- 204 (204 votes in 1 match)
Brendan- 202 (404 votes across 2 matches)
Serena- 187 (187 votes in 1 match)
Barry- 184 (184 votes in 1 match)
Avery- 178 (355 votes across 2 matches)
May- 174 (174 votes in 1 match)
Bede- 150 (150 votes in 1 match)
Tierno- 138 (138 votes in 1 match)
Klara- 134 (134 votes in 1 match)
Trevor- 115 (115 votes in 1 match)
Calem- 110 (110 votes in 1 match)
Trace- 41 (41 votes in 1 match)
So as you can see, there's a much wider range than we're used to seeing in the average vote totals, and perhaps most surprising is how different the rankings are when you compare them to our winners, or just which contestants made it the later rounds.
Poor Trace ends up at the bottom with only 41 votes in the whole competition, but Hop has the highest average of 687- though this pales in comparison to the 3,344 total votes N got!
These rankings will be influenced by the relative popularity of the matches that each contestant got to participate in, so another way of ranking is by the average % vote share, which is as follows:
N- 68.5%
Marnie- 65.8%
Penny- 58.5%
Gladion- 58.3%
Silver- 57.5%
Arven- 56.9%
Nemona- 56.5%
Bianca- 55.8%
Carmine- 54.3%
Brendan- 49%
Blue- 48.3%
Hop- 46.9%
Avery- 45.9%
Hau- 45.8%
Kieran & Hugh- 43.8%
Wally- 41.4%
Barry- 37.3%
Shauna- 35.6%
Cheren- 33.5%
Bede- 33.3%
Serena- 32.5%
Tierno- 32.4%
Trevor- 30.3%
May- 29.5%
Klara- 25%
Calem- 18%
Trace- 6.9%
So as you can see, it's another very different set of results! N sits on top this time, but neither of our second or third place winners get into the top five! But, by looking at both lists, you can start to get an idea of the overall rankings of which rivals are more popular than others.
Less indicative of ranking, but still interesting, is the fraction of each contestant's votes out of the total across the competition. It's probably easiest to see the disparity in graph form:
Tumblr media
Finally, let's look at individual matches.
This time round we saw a first for the blog- matches with over 1,000 votes. Not just one, but 4 of them! The most voted on poll was the finals, another first for the blog, with 2,379 votes. Second place goes to Round 1: Match 4, Wally vs Hop. This close race had 1,465 votes.
On the other end of the spectrum, the least voted on match was Round 1: Match 11, Avery vs Trevor, with only 379 votes. Narrowly beating it was Round 2: Match 5, Bianca vs Brendan, with 383. These two matches were the only ones not to break 400 votes.
Individual contestants though? The person who earned the most votes in a single match was our champion, N, who got a huge 1,446 votes in the finals! On the other end though, Trace got only 41 votes in his only match, Round 1: Match 6.
The last thing to look at is margins! The closest matches came down to just a 2.6% margin, or 26 votes, in the case of Round 3: Match 1, or a 2.8% margin (20 votes) in the case of Round 4: Match 2. Not the closest matches we've ever had, but still a nail biter!
And finally, the award for the biggest sweep. While N won a 513 vote majority in the finals, for this? We're looking at the percentages. Who swept the competition like no one else? In this tournament, in was Gladion! He beat Trace by an astounding 86.2% margin, leaving the poor kid wondering what happened. This almost matched N's vote margin, with a 509 vote difference.
And that about wraps it up! Let me know if I missed anything, and I hope you found this interesting! Stick around for more match ups and stats as we head into the new tournament soon!

I have 2 siblings, and in their wills my parents split their estate perfectly between the 3 of us. We all get 33.3%.... except for my younger sister, who gets 33.34% due to rounding. My parents' legal guy is a youngest sibling himself so he always gives the youngest siblings that extra 0.01%.
My sister always jokes now that our parents love her 0.01% more than me and my brother, lmao.

Common misconceptions:
1. Toto Wolff is the head of Mercedes AMG Motorsport and CEO of Mercedes AMG
Fact: Toto Wolff is the CEO of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The head of Mercedes AMG Motorsport is Christoph Sagemüller and the CEO of Mercedes AMG is Michael Schiebe
2. Toto Wolff is a shareholder in Mercedes.
Fact: Toto Wolff is a shareholder in the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team (33.3%). But not a shareholder in Mercedes Benz. Benz's shareholders are BAIC Group (9.98%), Tenaciou3 Prospect Investment Limited (9.69%), Kuwait Investment Authority (5.57%) and others
3. Toto Wolff is George Russell's manager
Fact: George Russell has never been managed by Toto Wolff. He has his own manager, Harry Soden and is under Infinity Sports Management. Toto and George are only bound to each other by the 10 year contract that was approximately signed on 2014/2015/2016 (source: Helmut Marko. No i'm not waffling)
4. Michael Schiebe is a Mercedes board member.
Fact: He is the board member of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team but is not included as a board member of Mercedes Benz Group.
5. Ola Kallenius is a shareholder at Mercedes Benz Group
Fact: He is not a shareholder. He has been employed by Mercedes Benz Group as a CEO since 2019. His contract was supposed to expire in 2024 but was renewed last year until 2029. He is like Oliver Mintzlaff, employed as CEO but not a shareholder.
6. INEOS & Toto can team up together, combining their share power (both 33.3%) and work against Mercedes
Fact: They can't. The brand is Mercedes. The biggest power in the Mercedes F1 board is still going to be Mercedes.
7. Mercedes relied on drivers' popularity to attract sponsors. Sponsors are fully there because of drivers.
Fact: Several sponsors of Mercedes F1 are long-standing Mercedes Benz partners that are probably roped into supporting the F1 team. Example? Luminar, SAP, IWC Schaffhausen, and many others.

preliminary stats
based on the first 114 polls.
general observations
we’ve had 9 majority-yes results so far (7.9% of the total)
highest result to date is Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth at a whopping 69.4% yes, followed closely by Martha Wells’s All Systems Red
there are some interesting similarities and some interesting differences between this and the fantasy blog
the fundamental truth that everyone thinks their taste is universal and everyone is wrong remains.
publisher
as with the fantasy polls, big 5 imprints are significantly more likely to have been read — 20.1% yes, vs. only 8.8% yes for other publishers. this difference is currently slightly less pronounced than for the fantasy polls, but also non-big 5 books are less than a quarter of the polls to date. I anticipate with more data it will probably align with the fantasy polls at around 5% yes.
age demographic
we don’t yet have enough data for a meaningful average for either teen/YA or children’s books. the average yes rate for adult books is 16.9%.
note that of the only 6 children’s book polls so far, 2 (33.3%) have been majority-yes. that said, I think that percentage is very unlikely to hold if/when more children’s book polls finish — there are plenty of children’s sci-fi books (I read many!), but there seem to be few that are widely read/beloved.
publication date
these are allllll over the place. the average publication date for the first ~250 submissions to this blog skews significantly older than the fantasy blog (1990 here vs. 2001 there), which initially, frankly, I kind of thought was people posturing by showing off that they’ve read The Classics. I now think it may reflect, rather, a divide between people who follow this blog (or see its posts reblogged) and people who submit books to this blog. the former are perhaps newer sci-fi, or newer adult sci-fi readers, who mainly read/have read things from the last decade; the latter are long-time sci-fi readers who grew up reading classics.
the result of this is a more scattered chart of decades, only some of which have enough submissions for a meaningful average:
1810s: 1 book
1860s: 2 books
1890s: 1 book
1930s: 3 books
1940s: 1 book
1950s: 3 books
1960s: 8 books
1970s: 11 books (average 9.6% yes)
1980s: 16 books (average 12.9% yes)
1990s: 13 books (average 12.4% yes)
2000s: 3 books (???????)
2010s: 35 books (average 20.1% yes)
2020s: 16 books (average 13.2% yes)
where’d the 2000s go???? funny little not-actually-bimodal distribution. as more polls come out I suspect this will probably settle into something a little more regular (maybe an actual bimodal distribution? lmao), and I expect it will continue to be skewed towards the 2010s.
race
this is a nice difference from the fantasy blog! while the number of submissions to this blog is even more overwhelmingly white than the fantasy blog (almost 86% here vs. about 82% there), the read rates are not actually that different: average 17.7% yes for books by white authors and 15.2% yes for books by authors of color.
gender
the gender demographics are the exact opposite here of the fantasy blog: where the fantasy blog’s submissions are about 60% women and about 35% men, the submissions here are about 35% women and about 60% men. and, for some reason, the averages are also reversed: books by men average 15.5% yes and books by women average 19.6% yes.
geography
North America (mainly the US) is at an average of 18.0% yes, and Europe (mainly the UK) is at an average of 14.9% yes. this is again the opposite of the fantasy polls — something about the relative dominance of American science fiction writers. there’s not yet enough data for meaningful statistics about other continents.
language
finally, as with the fantasy blog, the average for books originally published in English is substantially higher (18.5% yes) than the average for books not originally published in English (8.7% yes; 4.3% yes excluding Le Petit Prince). this is similar to the fantasy blog, and I imagine it will stay that way, although it’s possible Liu Cixin and some others will help keep the number a little higher.

SOME WRITING NEWS!
• If y’all didn’t see, the poll ended up being 33.3% for all three options 🥴 I was going to use a random wheel online to decide on what to post next, but one of my lovely readers voted through the comments SO A DECISION HAS BEEN MADE! Once Wooyoung and Jongho’s Pirate AUs get posted, my Hogwarts AU series will be posted next!
• I’ve been wanting to share my Fang Gang Group Chat imagine here to Tumblr but you can’t center or right align text like you can on Wattpad so I’ve been trying to figure out what I can use to convert that chapter into text format (I found an app that I think will work!) for those who don’t know, Fang Gang is the gc name from Living With 8 Vampires. It’s a bit of a “bonus chapter” of sorts where you can see some of the shenanigans that go on in the gc
EDIT: I lied. That app won’t let me add more than 2 people in a text chat (and I need 9) also the Fang Gang gc chapter actually has some things that occur outside the chat so I guess I’ll just be typing it out :P or I can post screenshots straight from Wattpad
• Idk if anyone remembers, but I made a post a few weeks ago saying I was cooking up a Jisung imagine for Valentine’s Day. I finished it! The cover banner has been made and I’ll be adding it to my drafts tonight to be posted on Valentines Day! <3 I’m very excited about it!

Pick Tumblr's Favorite Pokemon, Day 192!!!
We're in the final stretch! With only 6 pokemon left to be disqualified before we have our winner, the Dragonfly Cave is finally giving me batches of less than 10 pokemon. That means that in order to move on, the pokemon are looking to get 1/N of the votes, where N is the number of pokemon in this poll. Today, the pass point is 1/3, or 33.3%. So...

Also, congrats to yesterday's winners!

Swordswoman Showdown Round 2 Part 1
Malenia (Elden Ring) vs Olivier Mira Armstrong (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Huge woman.
post let me solo her
youtube
#malenia is 8'4“ flat chested and broad shouldered#she kills you with incredible grace and poise#trans icon#id let her Waterfowl Dance on me and Infect Me with her Scarlet Rot...
#malenia is so dedicated to the sword it mends her failing body. she lives by fighting#her strongest attack is a technique that halts the progress of her terminal illness#i can never stop thinking about that. by all means she couldve rotted into a mile of mush before the game started#but she persists!! she persists!!!
Olivier Mira Armstrong
Her sword is a family heirloom and she can hold up against or defeat very formidable opponents; She is so unbelievably cool
Extremely cool and intimidating military general with a signature heirloom sword.
She has a really fancy family heirloom sword. Stabs a man and throws him into liquid cement to suffocate alive after he tries to get her to abandon her men to be part of a nation-wide conspiracy, challenges a subordinate to a duel of life and death (with the sword), nervous tic is tapping on the hilt of the sword. She demanded that her father retire and make her the head of the family instead of her brother, and then fought against said brother (including with the sword)(won the fight), among other things stabbed a homunculus into the head; I loved this character because her personality was so refreshing. Really blunt and rational, but will show her love for her subordinates and family through actions rather than words. When the main characters first ask her for help, her motivations are entirely selfish (gaining knowledge to use for power). It is established several times that she really is scary, and isn't afraid to immediatly fight someone on the spot to prove a point. Literally pulls a "I'm getting so old, I'm afraid a women like me will never find a husband," to manipulate a superior. All in all, she could stab me and it would be the greatest accomplishment I had made in my life so far.
Her sword has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations. She is an expert in sword fighting and military strategy. She always holding it when commanding her troops.
She wields a saber passed down as a family heirloom; while she also sometimes uses guns and tanks, this is her primary weapon, which she used to kill the super-strong Homunculus Sloth the Indolent several times (she did, however, need help from others to kill him permanently, due to Sloth's ability to regenerate from death); As a Major General, Olivier is the highest-ranking woman in her country's military; she is also the moral highest-ranked military officer in her country, as she joins in a rebellion once she has confirmation as to how corrupt the military leaders are.
