Mercredi

La lune, le printemps. Reçu d’adorables portraits de mes amours : le Kid avait mis une cravate pour la photo de classe, et le Mini Kid a bien sûr voulu l’imiter, avec cravate et gilet. Dommage, je ne peux les partager. Ce soir, le fils de mon amie J donne un important récital de piano à Munich et je pense à lui. De la côte basque, mon copain D m’a envoyé le beau catalogue d’une expo présentée à la Villa Beatrix Enea (à Anglet) sacrifiée lors de mon récent séjour au profit de balades au bord de l’océan. La scie du jour (n’allez surtout pas l’écouter au risque d’y perdre comme moi un pan de cerveau et un peu de liberté) : La valle del Eden par Nino de Angelo, tube de 1984.

Webster

Because this post was getting so long.

Webster bites Sebastian and says he's from Queimada Grande, aka Snake Island, which is in Brazil. He's a pit viper of some kind.

Though Webster doesn't too much look like examples I've seen, his homeland suggests he's a Golden Lancehead viper, which are only found on that island. Wikipedia. Smithsonian. It's a cousin to the Fer-de-Lance viper found on the mainland. According to the Smithsonian article, they evolved from the Jararaca, which some people consider synonymous with the Fer-de-Lance, but Wikipedia has a separate page and species name for it. To me, Webster's strongly zig-zagged sides make me think of the Fer-de-Lance, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Well, it's got to be a Bothrops, either way. The Golden Lancehead's venomous bite is so potent that it practically melts human flesh, and a victim can be dead within an hour. No wonder Webster is shocked by Sebastian's ability to stay alive, let alone remain standing. We are talking major necrosis, kidney failure, and bleeding to death.

They spoke of small dick, dirty dick, dads sucking dick for Oxycontin. At the pop punk nostalgia festival, Blink 182’s dopey stage banter and the delight I took in it remained unchanged since I last saw them in 2002, which happened to be my very first concert ever. That arena show had been a swift introduction to the tolls of the large-scale concert experience: crowd crush, brick cannabis wafting through collective body odor, six-dollar water, and kicks to the skull by crowd surfers in Doc Marten’s. However, the median age of the Las Vegas audience, as indicated by the man joking aloud that his knees would not permit him to pogo as Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley had instructed, ensured When We Were Young would be far more leisurely. Scattered wallets and vapes were hastily returned in the aftermath of light-handed mosh pits; my girlfriend and I refilled our plastic souvenir CVS water bottle at one of numerous free filling stations. 

My body unburdened, the festival did not weigh heavily on my heart, either. I felt a warm pang hearing Saves The Day open with their breakthrough hit “At Your Funeral”, its rotation on MTV2 having been a soothing presence and a key gateway into emo. But for me, for the largely relaxed crowd, and certainly for Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge, there was an assured distance between our current selves and whatever teenage torments this music had soundtracked. I learned this might be the experience one should seek at a backward-looking music festival aimed at one’s age cohort: an unencumbered jaunt through the past where, having made it this far, we are free to laugh at ourselves.

The only person taking it all quite seriously was Travis Barker.

Reasons to love the fic: A proper 100 word drabble about pain. Always my jam. Love how much pain this packs into a few words. This is also one of my favorite scenes in the show, so that helps.
