Medieval Name Default Replacement Mod
Updated to be compatible with Kuttoe's Townie Demographics mod on March 8th, 2025 Released on September 22nd, 2024
Sul sul, and hail, my fellow medieval gameplay enjoyers! Have you grown tired of scouring the internet for names appropriate for Ultimate Decades Challenge, or the History Challenge, or any other gameplay that includes a medieval time period? Because I sure did, and that's why I got the idea to create this mod for those of us who want to just leave it up to the game to name our sims. And now, I'm so so excited to present it to you now!
If you don't want to read about the mod and just want to skip straight to downloading it, scroll to the very bottom of this post (under the "keep reading")! But if you want to know, I have written up a bit about the mod below.
How does it work?
It's very simple. You download the mod, and put it into your mods folder. Once the mod is in your folder, load up the game. In both CAS, and randomly generated townies, the available names will only be selected from a pool of medieval names.
When in CAS, if you use the die to randomize a name, it will only give you medieval names, like so:
When a townie is randomly generated in town, they will no longer have modern names, like so:
When your sim gives birth to a baby, the random name options will all be appropriately medieval, like so:
Is it compatible only with English?
It should be compatible with every language the game can be installed in; Miss Chipsa confirmed for me that it worked on a Russian-installed game!
Any details on the names you can provide us?
Well, it would be far too long of a list for me to tell you all of the names, but here are the details I can share - (under the cut)
a little over 3500 female names
a little over 7200 male names
a little over 13,400 surnames/bynames
the date range that these names should be appropriate for is between 800 and 1500, because that is the range that I pulled names from
Indian names replaced by medieval German
Islander names replaced by medieval Dutch
Japanese names replaced by medieval French
Moroccan names replaced by medieval Scottish/Irish
Latin names replaced by medieval Spanish/Portuguese
Native American names replaced by medieval Lithuanian, Latvian, Hungarian, Russian, and Romanian (I wanted to add all of these languages separately but ran out of categories)
Southest Asian names replaced by medieval Italian
a little over 1400 pet names (cats, dogs, and horses)
in the future, I intend to add names for the farm animals as well
Where did you get your names?
All human names in this mod have been sourced from this website: HERE.
Any other details I should know?
base game compatible, but it might be a little glitchy if your game isn't up-to-date.
you may only have one name replacement mod in your game at a time
this mod is subject to change as I find more names, so check back occasionally to see if the version is new!
if you have any questions or suggestions for names, feel free to message me
works for every age
will not replace the names of sims that have already been created

Caral-Supe Civilization
By Ontrvet - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=18736804
The Caral-Supe, also known as the Caral or Norte Chico, are a group of people that lived along the north-central coast of modern-day Peru from 3500-1800 BCE, contemporary to the building of the Egyptian pyramids. They also lived along the Fortaleza, Pativilca, and the Supe rivers. They are considered to be the oldest-known civilization in the Americas, predating cultures like the Olmecs by nearly 2000 years.
By I, KyleThayer, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2441867
Though there was a complex culture, the Caral-Supe people did not leave any ceramics or evidence of other visual arts behind. They did grow cotton with irrigation, which was a very important crop for clothing and nets as their animal protein sources were marine, even among those who lived inland. This reliance on marine protein sources lead to the hypothesis called the "Maritime Foundations of Andean Civilizations' hypothesis (MFAC), in which the culture began on the coast and then moved inland to find and then cultivate cotton to support those on the coast.
By I, Xauxa, CC BY 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2503267
In addition to maritime protein, the Caral-Supe people also ate squash, beans, guava, and sweet potato, adding avocado and achira in northern areas. More recent studies also show that maize was also grown. Prior to about 2013, it was thought that the Caral-Supe didn't have a staple food that they grew. According to Evidence for maize (Zea mays) in the Late Archaic (3000–1800 B.C.) in the Norte Chico region of Peru published in 2013, 'New data drawn from coprolites, pollen records, and stone tool residues, combined with 126 radiocarbon dates, demonstrate that maize was widely grown, intensively processed, and constituted a primary component of the diet throughout the period from 3000 to 1800 BC.'
By I, Xauxa, CC BY 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=222037
Without an artistic or written record, it's difficult to know a lot about the Caral-Supe culture. They did leave behind a vast wealth of buildings, including large pyramids. They also built settlements close together, making it perhaps the most densely populated area area during the 3rd millennium BCE, with the possible exception of Northern China. Quipu have been found, though exactly how or why they were used is uncertain, as it is with later Andean civilizations.
Credit: Caral Archaeological Zone – Ministry of Culture of Peru
Efforts have been made to extrapolate what type of government the Caral-Supe people had, including the economy, ideology, and physical bases of power would have been. Evidence for a central government include some of the structures being built in one or two large pushes and large warehouses left behind. Other economic evidence include the trade relationships between the inland and maritime groups as well as those living else where as evidenced by 'Caral] exported its own products and those of Aspero to distant communities in exchange for exotic imports: Spondylus shells from the coast of Ecuador, rich dyes from the Andean highlands, hallucinogenic snuff from the Amazon.'
source: https://www.ancient-origins.net/ancient-places-americas/unique-artifacts-shed-light-daily-life-5000-year-old-city-caral-002019
The ideology is harder to pin down because they didn't decorate their buildings. A gourd was found with what appears to be the Staff God, a depiction of a human-like figure holding instruments of power, this one being 'a leering figure with a hood and fangs' and it is the oldest such depiction. As this type of depiction is common among other pre-Colombian Andean societies, it is thought that access to deities and the supernatural was a part of the purpose of government.
By I, Xauxa, CC BY 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2488467
Physical evidence includes a lack of damage due to warfare, including a lack of bodies that were injured in warfare, nor are there walls around the settlements. The complexity of Caral-Supe culture without the evidence of warfare or need for defense driving kin groups into larger societies is unique among those ancient societies that have been studied. Most complex cultures came about as a way to defend against others.

The Babylonian Map of the World with Irving Finkel | Curator’s Corner S9 Ep5

26 fem writer (she/hers) looking for other 25+ writers for some lit fandom-based roleplays. I enjoy writing male and female characters, prefer to double, and enjoy lots of ooc chat/meme sharing/character gushing. I have no preference in terms of m x f, f x f, or m x m pairings. Below are the fandoms I am interested in and what I’m looking for. I can write anywhere from 800-3500+ words depending on context/time/muse. 🌘
The Handmaid’s Tale
oc x oc only
I have two fleshed out ocs I would love to write for this fandom. One is a fem handmaid and the other is a male guardian/eye. Both have the opportunity to be in non-heterosexual relationships. Please bring the angst, drama, and heartbreak of a forbidden romance set in this universe.
Deadpool & Wolverine
oc x oc, oc x cc, cc x cc
I love the idea of exploring this world, specifically through either with hijinks from the TVA or set entirely within the Void as our characters fight for survival. Open to focusing on the main cast, canon-divergent existing marvel characters, strictly on ocs, or a mix of them all.
Moonknight
oc x oc, oc x cc
I have a lovely oc I’d love to use who is an avatar similar to that of Marc Spector. I am open to playing her against the system, or an oc if you have one you’ve been hoping to use. If you do feel open to playing the three for me, I am happy to discuss playing other marvel characters for you in return or the system against an oc of yours.
Interested? Please leave a like below and I will reach out.
Like if interested!

Hello! I apologize to everyone who comes to me asking about the Legacy History Challenge because it took me so long to make updates. My notebook had problems and I was unable to play. The game crashed a lot and the Sims didn't move from place even when playing with low graphics. This is a problem for anyone who plays with 16 Sims in their family and at least 30 in the area like me. Two Sims in the family in the base game was already unfeasible.
Now I replaced the battery cable and the HD with an SSD and discovered that the performance problem was caused by the battery power supply. The new problem is the lack of space for 100 GB of CCs. However, this is an easier problem to solve. The game is running, so everything is fine!
I played the Genesis Prologue again and need to write the story to post here. Now I'm in Paleolithic gameplay. Testing what is possible to complete according to my rules and trying to make my own mods, but it's not working out very well.
I made my Aliens Egyptian Gods for the Ancient Age. The Sims is a game that takes a lot of time to customize. In addition to having to look for CCs. And I'm updating the Spreadsheet to go to the next Age, as well as making small changes to the rules.
This part of the Calendar is the most complicated because historians have several chronologies and there is no record of when certain rulers reigned millennia ago. For all these reasons, this is a very extensive challenge, but I intend to post again.

Come Hel or High Lord: Ch 10
Chapter 10: But Where's My Love
Words: 3500
Reminder: This is a crossover between all SJM series. So spoilers for TOG, ACOTAR, and CC
Summary:
"Rhys always had his schemes to fall back on, many of which he didn’t bother to tell anyone about until it was over and done with. Now that he knew about the existence of other worlds, he desperately hoped Rhys was one of a kind. He wasn’t sure if the universe could survive two rulers who schemed more than they trusted their own family. "
Snippet below the cut. Read on Ao3
Cassian paced in front of the fireplace at the River House, glancing nervously between his balled up fists and Feyre. “It’s cold, Feyre! Why is it so cold?” “I don’t know. So is mine.” Her eyes were downcast, staring at her hands laying palm up on her lap. “Cold! There is no life in it at all, what if … what - fucking Caludron what if -” Feyre’s head snapped up and she leveled a stare at him that quickly halted his pacing. “Stop! Just stop. Don’t even say it, I know they're alive.” Her fingers trembled as she said it. “How? How do you know?” Her general slumped on the low backed couch next to his High Lady. His voice was frayed. “Because I… am alive Cass. If Rhys were… if he were gone, I would be too.” She winced and gave him an apologetic look. There was really no delicate way of talking about that stupid bargain her and Rhys had made together in a moment of desperation. For a moment, she thought he might confront her about it again, and she might have let him, if only to get his mind off the path it was wandering. Cassian collapsed against Feyre’s shoulder, his hands were shaking slightly and she didn’t know what to do to calm him. She wasn’t even sure anything could, had never seen him so undone. “The bond is cold, not gone, Cassian. They are just too far away for us to reach them right now. We have to trust that they will find what they went after and return home to us.” “What if I can’t trust that?” “What else can we do? We knew that a possibility lay in them traveling .. outside of our world, as Bryce did. Do you honestly think Nesta is going to let anything come between her and what she wants?”

Reading and Literacy
Reading is as old as writing, beginning about 3500 BCE in Sumer with the development of writing. This led to the development of the scribal class and the concept of literacy and functional literacy as well as illiteracy and functional illiteracy. Exactly who could read and they read changed through history.
Literacy is, in its simplest form, the ability in adults to read, but it can be divided into at least four categories. Someone is considered fully literate if they can read, write, and understand, use, engage with, and evaluate written texts. Functional literacy is when someone is able to function in society, but they do so at with less ease or at a lower level than those who are fully literate or they choose not to engage with written works in more depth. Someone is functionally illiterate, they have trouble functioning in their society due to a lack of ability to read or write despite education. Illiteracy is generally a term related to those who are unable to read or write at all, though not through disability or lack of education. Literacy is independent of IQ, so someone can be highly intelligent but also illiterate in some form.
Writing developed in at least five civilizations throughout history, Sumer, Egypt, the Indus River Valley Civilization, the Zapotec and Olmec, and Shang Dynasty China. Sumer is the first civilization that we know of to develop writing around 3500 BCE. The degree of literacy in each civilization varies and is sometimes quite difficult to ascertain in the records we have.

Among the Sumerians, literacy was a matter of necessity related to bureaucracy. The writing system began as a form of accounting and expanding from there into recording oral stories and daily records and then into correspondence. Among assyriologists, those who study the vast cuneiform records, it is believed that functional literacy was 'somewhat widespread by the Old Babylonian period', though scribes were likely the only class of people who were fully literate.

The Indus Valley Script emerged around 3500 BCE as well, but given many of the inscriptions we have now are very short, we don't know if it was a full writing system and we haven't been able to decipher it yet. Because of this, we also don't know what writing was used for nor how literate the population was.

Among the Ancient Egyptian people, writing and literacy emerged around 3300 BCE and is thought to extend to between 1-15% of the population, depending on the time period, though the evidence for this is limited due to the fragility of the papyrus record compared to the clay record that the Sumerians left behind.

In China, writing developed in the Shang Dynasty, around 1200 BCE. These appear to begin with accounting among the elite, recording sacrifices, tributes, and hunting. Writing evolved to form and police the hierarchical bureaucratically government during the Qin and Han dynasties (around 200 BCE). by the Zhou dynasty, education was deemed important to the imperial government and thus became important to the lower classes as an effort to either move up or emulate the upper classes and was recorded in the Book of Rites (Liji 記), which became one of the Five Classics and schools were widespread during the Autumn and Spring periods. Understanding of literacy in this period is still being studied, though, as recent discoveries have changed previous thinking as to how and by whom written works were used.

The Olmec and Zopotec peoples developed glyphic writing sometime between 900-400 BCE. The writings that we have remaining seem to be related to royal and calendar uses. Most of the writing we have remaining is inscriptions in stone, so it's difficult to figure out how literate the civilizations were.
By unknown - William Foxwell Albright, The Proto-Sinaitic Inscriptions and Their Decipherment, Public Domain, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=34607419
The development of alphabetic scripts, in which a single symbol represented a single sound, is contested. Some hold that the Ancient Greeks developed the first system in 750 BCE. Others contest that the ancient Semetic-speaking people of Canaan developed a consonantal alphabet system, in which a single symbol represented a single consonant sound, around 1500 BCE. This consonantal system then developed into the writing of the Phoenician, Hebrew, and Aramaic peoples. In these systems, there were initially 30 cuneiform symbols to represent the consonants. Previous thinking had the Greeks influenced by the Phoenicians in developing a full alphabet with vowels, but more modern research points to the Greeks being influenced by the Canaanite people with influencing the Greeks. The simplification of the writing systems allowed them to spread much further than the empires that used them. Emerging research suggests that literacy was more widespread than previously thought and those rates are being revised, but the literacy of soldiers, based on what appear to be letters home that have been recently recovered, as early as the 7th century BCE point to a much higher rate than previously thought.
As with literacy rates in previous eras, the literacy rates in antiquity (among the Classical Greek and Roman societies) is under revision due to more recent discoveries leading to reinterpretations of previous evidence, but it does seem to be more widespread than previously thought (that being only among the elite or a particular class of scribes and priests). Anthony DiRenzo stated in a 2000 article in the Journal fo Technical Writing and Communication that Roman society was 'a civilization based on the book and the register' and that 'no one, either free or slave, could afford to be illiterate'. This is under contention and still being studied.

Vitacci Predator FX400 UTV - FamilyGoKarts.com
This is 20 horsepower and usually they are a bit cheaper about $3500. And people know that and they have them sitting there driveway or garage under a cover and they don't use them because they don't know how to tweak them and we do. they are not liquid cool and they should be and we have a jacket and a jacket kit and the cooling system is only about $85 in our kit that we can make and also we have a kit for speed new carburetor and new exhaust brings into about 35 horsepower it's about where the motor should be. We also add in an option for a top end kit it's about a 210 CC motor we offer a kit that makes it 350CC and the engine is big enough yes. That brings the horsepower to about 45 horsepower and now you're talking about horsepower that you can make a small vehicle out of. The fit car has about 60 horsepower no it's about 35 horsepower that high performance small honda you saw the 660 s has only 40 horsepower. And it goes pretty good. We would leave the gearing alone and the axles and so forth you need new tires and rims and you need a drop one body kit and a new interior and you need to chop the roll cage off the top and attach the roll cage we send and we show you where the attachment points are of course it's part of the kit and it comes ready made and all you do is bolt it up and weld it and you drop the body kit on in the glass you have to put on afterwards or it would break every time. This is going to be a fiberglass kit and he wants the other ones to be metal and will have a full blown automobile industry making those other kits. The reason is safety and reliability and people won't buy them if they're fiberglass because they're not of that level. Price will stay the same because we can make tons of them very quickly and we're going to start making the Corvette. And we're gonna go through statistics.
Vitachi 4 wheel original horsepower 20HP
2.Vitachi original top speed forty eight miles per hour
3. Vitachi original zero sixty 4.9 seconds. And you cannot drive it on the road in this format however with our kit
H1/2 HUMMER LIKE THE HUMBUG FBGL FULL KIT
1. H1/2 New horsepower 48 horsepower
2. H 1/2 zero to sixty three point two seconds
3.H1/2 top speed with two passengers the way £150 each top speed 180 mph with two passengers the way one hundred and fifty pounds each
the H1/2 kit Is a drop on kit most of the items are already installed on the fuselage including the dashboard and gages you just need to hook them up and a new battery system is included which adds one battery of a different size. And also the charging system is included the voltage regulating system is included and it has a small solid state control box. Discharge systems for extra current are included and grounding systems also it has a gear shift kit included to use a floor panel system and a box system adjacent to you on the right new steering wheel new steering column and steering system included the glass the full body and it is made of fiberglass with an enclosure and full interior including two seats in the front and event seat in the rear and this particular version would have a roll cage and a soft top it is the least expensive. Can we include new rims and tires they're lightweight and that's Why. Goes to come with it or twice as heavy each.
Estimated price of this kit is about $5000 because it's all small parts and it's all lightweight and it's not very high performance the brake system included is hydraulic that comes with your vitaki and it's street legal everything about this makes it street legal. It comes with a horn and lights turn signals and control panel for that and fuse box for that and a small radio it's very cheap but what do you want it's a military type vehicle. We'll have other models off road dune bug you type which would be a baja car and it'll be a Chevy in a Ford and they would look very cool psyche off Road Camaro and an off road Ford Mustang for this size vehicle and larger off road quad UTV. And we're going to start opening factories for this now and the UTV don't really sell but these will and we're going to convert those factories to this mode. Asap asap
--- We are handling the fallout in residual activity from the evacuation and the loss we are mitigating it it is not as catastrophic as predicted at this very time but we are constantly beefing up right now just in case they're evacuating peacefully they're not building trillions of devices it is a number and it and it is up there but it's not huge. People don't want them to blow us up they say and we are moving out and we're getting moving on these ideas as well and we're going to open the factories. Programs are slated to start on Friday we will make announcements of other programs beginning tomorrow and they are major and we want ours to sign on as soon as you can. This is a professionally done product and our kit is going to be professionally made. Kits these days that are add-ons or perform Kits these days that are add-ons or performance kits have all the parts you need and one of the companies that made that happen was ikea and our son said you have to have everything in it and they made it a staple and these guys do the work sometimes. Going to be doing the work in the Midwest and we're going to be hiring them and in the perimeter to do this work. They are going to love these buggies and they are Baja buggies they're not doing buggies they go in the dunes very easily and they go on Baja as well which is much more difficult the more expensive the Baja donor vehicle the better of the performance and engines of 250CC are better usually the chassis is Baja professional race quality and you can go extremely fast some we have made go 300 mph and that's about 150 mph faster than your fastest buggy. And we will be making these for competition and people will be buying them and you will see them on TV. All of our Gods with you and all our prayers and Godspeed
Frank Castle Hardcastle and he says he wants to see me out there and his wife 'cause he's gonna raise us race us and do the stupid thing over again and not hurt himself and we have to do this now.
He says it's a friendly race and he wants to get together and see if he can do anything but he's gonna try and sometimes he wins. So I'm gonna get ready for it he says he needs a big one I need a big one too. They do make bigger ones and they're Class A but really this is gonna be intense he's gonna have to make when he said.
Thor Freya
Yeah I'll give you advice probably. I mean it too and I soup it up and hyper cool it and yeah we're gonna have to do that

There are a lot of bikes in the market but there was only one victory that I heard the motors at first for not humongous but very big but very powerful but so is the frame and there were not as heavy that's the way in combination and they also had trimmed down versions
Zues
It's true they were not as heavy as the Harley still fairly heavy but they were strong the frames can hold up his weight he's gonna weigh 400 pounds and it is rated for about£800. It doesn't say that but it is and they wave like £300 less. And pound for pound it would work because you need a transmission like that to go any distance and with a motor that big and a person that big.
Hera
good so im in if you try it.
Ken
We have many ways ofWe have many ways of trying but this would be a major major major company to try that with just like Pontiac. Of the problems is the name of the bike. The words for people other than the max and they want to use it to try and take over but we will try and get that going and put it in as a special project request and he says by Hera it's hers and she agrees. There's another one he can't remember the name of but we're gonna put that one in two something like American Eagle and that's what it is.
Frank Castle hard castle

Paiseleht (Tussilago farfara)
Saksa keeles Huflattich, inglise keeles coltsfoot.
Mitmeaastaline õistaim ainukesena liigina paiselehe perekonnas korvõieliste sugukonnas, mis on astrilaadsete seltsi osa.
On pärit Euroopast, Aasiast ja Põhja-Ameerikast. Kasvab niisketel kohtadel, põldudel, teeservadel ja inimeste poolt mahajäetud aladel. Sarnaneb võilillega, kuid õitseb varem, aprillist maini.
Ühest taimest võivad tulla 3500-8000 seemet, lendavad laiali tuule abil, idanevad kuni 2 cm sügavuselt mullast jasäilitavad idanevuse 3-4 kuud. Paljuneb ka risoomidega. Taim on 6 kuni 40 cm kõrge.

Machine learning enables viability of vertical-axis wind turbines
03.04.24 - EPFL researchers have used a genetic learning algorithm to identify optimal pitch profiles for the blades of vertical-axis wind turbines, which despite their high energy potential, have until now been vulnerable to strong gusts of wind. If you imagine an industrial wind turbine, you likely picture the windmill design, technically known as a horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT). But the very first wind turbines, which were developed in the Middle East around the 8th century for grinding grain, were vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT), meaning they spun perpendicular to the wind, rather than parallel. Due to their slower rotation speed, VAWTs are less noisy than HAWTs and achieve greater wind energy density, meaning they need less space for the same output both on- and off-shore. The blades are also more wildlife-friendly: because they rotate laterally, rather than slicing down from above, they are easier for birds to avoid. With these advantages, why are VAWTs largely absent from today’s wind energy market? As Sébastien Le Fouest, a researcher in the School of Engineering Unsteady Flow Diagnostics Lab (UNFOLD) explains, it comes down to an engineering problem – air flow control – that he believes can be solved with a combination of sensor technology and machine learning. In a paper recently published in Nature Communications, Le Fouest and UNFOLD head Karen Mulleners describe two optimal pitch profiles for VAWT blades, which achieve a 200% increase in turbine efficiency and a 77% reduction in structure-threatening vibrations. “Our study represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental application of a genetic learning algorithm to determine the best pitch for a VAWT blade,” Le Fouest says. Sébastien Le Fouest and an experimental VAWT blade © Alain Herzog CC BY SA Turning an Achilles’ heel into an advantage Le Fouest explains that while Europe’s installed wind energy capacity is growing by 19 gigawatts per year, this figure needs to be closer to 30 GW to meet the UN’s 2050 objectives for carbon emissions. “The barriers to achieving this are not financial, but social and legislative – there is very low public acceptance of wind turbines because of their size and noisiness,” he says. Despite their advantages in this regard, VAWTs suffer from a serious drawback: they only function well with moderate, continuous air flow. The vertical axis of rotation means that the blades are constantly changing orientation with respect to the wind. A strong gust increases the angle between air flow and blade, forming a vortex in a phenomenon called dynamic stall. These vortices create transient structural loads that the blades cannot withstand. EPFL's experimental VAWT blade © UNFOLD EPFL CC BY SA To tackle this lack of resistance to gusts, the researchers mounted sensors onto an actuating blade shaft to measure the air forces acting on it. By pitching the blade back and forth at different angles, speeds, and amplitudes, they generated series of ‘pitch profiles’. Then, they used a computer to run a genetic algorithm, which performed over 3500 experimental iterations. Like an evolutionary process, the algorithm selected for the most efficient and robust pitch profiles, and recombined their traits to generate new and improved ‘offspring’. This approach allowed the researchers not only to identify two pitch profile series that contribute to significantly enhanced turbine efficiency and robustness, but also to turn the biggest weakness of VAWTs into a strength. “Dynamic stall – the same phenomenon that destroys wind turbines – at a smaller scale can actually propel the blade forward. Here, we really use dynamic stall to our advantage by redirecting the blade pitch forward to produce power,” Le Fouest explains. “Most wind turbines angle the force generated by the blades upwards, which does not help the rotation. Changing that angle not only forms a smaller vortex – it simultaneously… http://actu.epfl.ch/news/machine-learning-enables-viability-of-vertical-a-2 (Source of the original content)

Cylinder Seals
By Marie-Lan Nguyen (2006), Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=514757
Somewhere between 7000 and 3500 BCE, cylinder seals began to appear around the ancient Near east. These seals are about 1 inch (2-3 cm) wide and are of durable materials like gems, glass, obsidian, lapis lazuli, or carnelian. They are carved with scenes and later characters that can be rolled against a soft material, like clay, to leave an impression by the clay filling the depressions in the seal, leaving a raised impression behind.

Seals that are called roller stamps are meant to leave an ink type impression have been found that were made by the Olmec people in the New World. These were used to mark things like cloth or other surfaces that could accept an inked impression.

These seals seem to have served for a few purposes, especially in a pre-writing society, or one where only a small portion of people are literate. They could be used as a type of signature or branding. They were often found buried with people as a part of their grave goods, so it's most likely that each seal denoted a particular person.

Most of the seals that have been found have a hole running through the center of them, indicating that it was likely worn to be easily accessible, most likely on a necklace, so it was available when needed and the cord could be used to roll it across the clay as well.

The theme of the images were often religiously inspired or telling a story that relates the bearer to the world around them. Darius I of Persia's seal showed him 'aiming his drawn bow at an upright enraged lion impaled by two arrows, while his chariot horse is trampling a dead lion', framing him as a conqueror and warrior.
