Bianca Maria Dittrich in den Top-30 der Welt

Als Nummer 46 der Weltrangliste hatte sich unsere Bianca Maria Dittrich für das 35km Gehen bei der Leichtathletik-Weltmeisterschaft in Budapest qualifiziert. Sie erreichte dort auf Platz 29 in einem Feld von 47 Athletinnen das Ziel. Das Rennen war von Anfang an sehr hart für die 30-jährige Freiburgerin. Temperaturen zwischen 23 und 30 Grad Celsius mit einer Luftfeuchtigkeit von 85% erschwerten ihr WM-Debüt, bei dem sie so gerne eine neue Bestleistung gegangen wäre. Schlussendlich verfehlte sie diese um etwas mehr als zwei Minuten. Ihr Trainer Robert Ihly hat an der Verpflegungsstation gute Worte für sie gefunden und sie motiviert, den Kampf trotz offensichtlichen körperlichen Leiden nicht aufzugeben. Beide sind nach dem Wettkampf überaus zufrieden mit der Leistung. Bianca hat großen Kampfgeist bewiesen und immer wieder versucht, sich an die vor ihr liegenden Kontrahentinnen heranzukämpfen.

Im kommenden Jahr muss die Umstellung auf die 20-Kilometer-Distanz erfolgen, weil es die 35 Kilometer nicht mehr im Wettkampfprogramm geben wird. Bianca macht die Fortsetzung ihrer sportlichen Karriere abhängig davon, wie das Training mit den neuen Reizen neben ihrer beruflichen Laufbahn verläuft. Sie arbeitet in Vollzeit als IT Service Managerin.

Dreimal Gold für DRT-Geherinnen bei der DM Straßengehen in Erfurt

Am 15. April 2023 fand in Erfurt die Deutsche Meisterschaft im Straßengehen statt, bei der unsere beiden DRT-Geherinnen mit drei Goldmedaillen brillieren konnten. Allen voran zu erwähnen, ist Antje Köhler, die in ihrer Altersklasse W60 gleich zwei Meistertitel erringen konnte. Sie bewies wieder einmal ihr Stehvermögen, untermauerte ihre Liebe zur Langstrecke und absolvierte die 20-Kilometer-Distanz in 2:17:56 Stunden, womit sie die zweitbeste Zeit ihrer sportlichen Laufbahn aufstellte. Quasi "im Vorbeigehen" konnte sie auch noch den Titel über die 10-Kilometer-Distanz gewinnen, welche sie in 1:07:23 Stunden passierte.

Mit Bianca Maria Dittrich konnte eine weitere DRT-Geherin die Spitzenposition im nationalen Vergleich einnehmen. Sie hat sich der längsten Strecke im Meisterschaftsprogramm verschrieben - den 35 Kilometern. Als neue Deutsche Meisterin erreichte sie nach 3:03:13 Stunden das Ziel und qualifizierte sich für die Team-Europameisterschaft, die am 21. Mai 2023 im tschechischen Podebrady stattfand. Dort belegte die in Freiburg lebende Informatikerin einen starken 15. Platz und empfahl sich in einer neuen persönlichen Bestzeit von 3:00:55 Stunden für die Leichtathletik-Weltmeisterschaft in Budapest (Ungarn). Wird sie vom Deutschen Leichtathletikverband nominiert, wäre es ihr fünfter 35-Kilometer-Wettkampf in diesem Jahr. 

Während Antje als Zwischenstation in der Vorbereitung auf die Masters-EM in Pescara (Italien) noch planmäßig zweimal die Unterdistanz von 5.000 Metern in Angriff nehmen und um den Süddeutschen sowie Deutschen Meistertitel kämpfen wird, begibt sich Bianca in einen nahezu wettkampffreien Ausdauerblock, um für das im Juli bevorstehende Trainingslager in St. Moritz (Schweiz) bestens gewappnet zu sein.

George's 1/10th scale Mata Nui Tour

This is a follow up to my previous post about a piece of concept art that depicts the island of Mata Nui as being 1/10th size it is officially listed as in most later maps.

I must first say that I was blown away with the positive reception that post received! I did see some concern that it was now too small, but I believe that's mainly down to how absolutely MASSIVE the final size is. A 90% reduction in size by no means makes Mata Nui small.

But I know not everyone has spent as much time obsessing over the size of Mata Nui as I have, so I decided to enlist everyone's favourite Ta-Koronan George to help illustrate how large this "small" Mata Nui really is.

I scaled the image of Mata Nui so that it matches the measurements on the side, so it is roughly 35km long and 17km wide. I also made a simple height map to get the Mangai volcano the appropriate 2km high.

I started out with just some simple pegs at the locations of the villages to first illustrate the basic distances.

George here starts out at the location of the iconic beach from MNOG and the end of QFTT

The beach is actually shockingly equidistant from most of the villages, Ta-Koro is closest at 2km, Ga-Koro is second closest at 6km, but the other 4 are all between 11 and 13km from the beach!

Here's a little animation to show the size of the pins, they're by no means small.

They had to be this big to be visible at all, which just goes to show how large the island still is even at 1/10th scale.

I did several shots of George standing on the edge of the Mangai's caldera. I extracted the villages from Bionicle the Legend of Mata Nui and scaled them accordingly, placing each of them where the village should be. See if you can spot them!

From the top of Mangai its 20km to the tiny islands at the very tip of Po-Wahi.

The view of the Mangai volcano is quite impressive from the villages too. Even at this 2km height its still around 2/3rds the height of Mt Fuji or half the height of Mt Kilimanjaro.

My heightmap could use more work, the Ihu mountain range isn't really apparent, I was mainly focused on getting the Mangai at the right height.

I hope these visuals helped to show the size of the 1/10th scale Mata Nui. I really do feel it is more in line with what we see from most media and fits well with the story.

Even with this size there's one thing to remember: Raw size isn't everything. Terrain matters a lot. Its easy enough for someone now to walk a kilometre or two over straight paved roads, but considering that Mata Nui is a lush volcanic island, half the place is covered in a jungle full of massive trees and swamps, much of it is very hilly and steep, this isn't an easy place to get around in.

This is the most I can really do with an island that scale, blender doesn't appreciate having a view distance in the hundreds of kilometres while also rendering something human scaled.

Second is a comparison between the island I've just shown you overlaid on top of the full scale.

The whole island itself has a footprint roughly the same as the full scale Mangai volcano!

Driving through our cities means that we don't actually interact very much with our cities. I'm not some kooky urbanist who believes in things like "farm to table India Pale Ales" and "marked crosswalks," but I do love to go for a walk. And that's a good thing, because my cars break down often enough that I get a lot of shoe miles in, too.

Most of my city is pretty dull. Industrial yards. Long expanses of highway with nothing in between. Haunted backroads. I try to avoid these parts nowadays, even when I'm in my car, lest the inevitable failure of an electrical system means that I have to walk back through them. No, sticking to the older neighbourhoods is what I'd prefer: tiny houses, Little Free Libraries, coffee shops, plaques commemorating the site of famous serial killings. You're not just walking through there on your way to the auto parts store, you're experiencing your city in a whole new light.

Back in the day, everyone had an unreliable car, and so the city had a lot more stuff in it. Tiny little groceries to get a popsicle from when your cooling system burst. Charming gas stations to push the car into, so that you could be ripped off by the proprietor. Now, with the advances in technology, modern cars are miraculous vehicles that can run up to the half-million-km mark without you so much as giving them a decent carwash. So there's no reason to, say, stop 9.5 km into your 35km commute to work, and hoof it towards the nearest mom-and-pop shop capable of grinding you a new distributor rotor.

If you ask me, that's very depressing to think about. Life should be full of unexpected opportunities for you to meet exciting new people who aren't tow truck drivers. Maybe that dude who watches your front suspension fall off after hitting a pothole will become your best friend. You'll never know, though, because your car's control arm is bolted on all the way by robots who weren't even a little bit drunk. Sad.

Train fact: the longest* train ever

like all things to do with railways, you can get pretty granular and pedantic with this one, so this is likely to also be the longest post ever. Sorry, but actual facts (and pretty pictures) under the cut!

The longest passenger train in regular service is Australia's 'Ghan, a luxury tourist train that runs between Adelaide and Darwin, and averages 774 m/2,539ft in length. that's twice as long as the Empire State building is tall.

The reason I say "in regular service" is because the longest passenger train EVER was run by the Rhaetian Railway in Switzerland, to celebrate 175 years of Swiss railways, and that was more than twice that long at 1,910m/6266.4ft. Almost an entire Kentucky Derby worth of train! It had to go incredibly slowly, maxing out at 35km/h, to avoid overloading the electric systems of the railway and local power grids.

But, the thing with passenger trains is that they have a lot of rules and regulations applied to them that freight doesn't have to follow. So freight trains get HYUGE.

The average American freight train (I consider the USA to be freight trains' natural habitat because there is a whole bunch of wide open space for for them to crawl around) is 5400 feet long, and the standard in Europe is around 3000ft. That's a 10-20 minute walk at average adult walking speed, just to go from end to end. You know when you stop at a level crossing, and a train goes by, and it seems like it's going by forever? That was probably one of these.

But the average frieght train is peanuts to mining trains. Trains came from the mines, and they still dominate there. The biggest trains in the world are consists of ore and coal, run by tiny crews from extraction point to export. This has always been true.

For example, the Datong–Qinhuangdao railway in China runs coal trains daily that are 2.614 km/8576 ft long. That's more than 1.5 miles, or three times as long as the burj khalifa is tall. And that's the standard for that line.

But that doesn't break any records.

The longest production train, running regularly, is the Sishen–Saldanha railway line's maganese/iron ore train. These trains are four kilometers long. 4,000 meters, almost half the height of the highest peak on earth, in wagons full of metals. Too long to be seen in a single photograph- the one below was stitched together from four separate pictures, taken from the air:

and that's still not the record!

The record for longest frieght train is held by BHP, an Australian mining company. It was made for the record, but the capacity is still there. This train ran on june 21st 2011, and was 682 wagons long, over seven kilometers. Almost twice the length of the Sishen–Saldanha's, and a quarter the height of Olympus mons. If you stood this train on its end, it would be taller than Mt Denali. If you started at the front of the lead locomotive, and ran as fast as you physically could, you wouldn't reach the last wagon for an hour.

There are entire branch lines shorter than this train.

Unfortunately, there are no good photos, because nobody in space had time for railfanning that day, but there are plenty of pictures of other BHP trains!

Diante de toda essa multidão, que me observou no verão de 76.

Estava tão calmo com aquela paixão tardia.

A noite fria caiu, e com ela minha simpatia aumentou.

E eu, o que eu digo?

Estou aflito, mas melhorando, plantando novas flores no canto da cerca.

Entre as veredas de um acerto e outro, percebo que não estou perecendo, e me contento com algumas formigas no Jardim, as vejo e não lanço inseticida, elas mordem as orquídeas, levam talos de camomila, mas esse é o processo da vida.

Enquanto vou regando as Dálias e mantendo a calma, mudo de lugar os Lírios-de-um-dia, para realizar o desejo da minha alma. E brevemente fico feliz com os resultados, mas preciso tirar uma quantia de terra e mover para o outro lado.

Estou construindo algo bonito aqui, as Vincas com sua cor exuberante estão florindo e evoluindo.

No horizonte desta tarde sinto o cheiro dos Coléus, observo o sol se pondo, e logo o outono chegará.

Demorou muito para alguém plantar flores em meu coração, confesso que esperei em vão, pois, eu mesmo tinha feito isso tantas vezes, mas morrendo por evitar os Gerânios em outro dia que terminava, e essa busca nunca cessava.

Tentei contratar pessoas para o último plano, era insano.

Fazer um Jardim com 35km², rodeado de Girassóis, a parte interna estava perfeita.

E não precisaria ter uma colheita para realocar as mudas que ainda estavam nascendo.

Eu esperaria o tempo que fosse para ver tudo nascer e crescer.

As folhas secas, as formigas novamente coletariam e levariam para outro lugar.

Tudo tem seu tempo, e os Girassóis estavam prontos para brilhar, aqui é onde quero ficar, nas poesias que não se cansam de brotar da terra.

O Jardim nunca estará perfeito?

O Jardim sempre vai ser magnífico.

E eu estou tão sereno, tão imbatível, pois nada interfere na plantação, nunca foi em vão, nunca.

Hoje me alegro em não ter desistido de plantar, hoje respiro o ar das flores, que me trazem vida, mas não uma vida corrida e mal vivida, pense em um Jardim que, todos os dias recebe irrigação redobrada, e nada de cobras ou aranhas por aqui.

Claro, as aranhas de Jardim sempre passam para dar uma decorada, mas não causam mal algum.

As cobras d'água são uma graça, e jamais serão ameaça.

Tudo o que eu sempre quis, foi ver um mini ecossistema sendo parte do meu dilema profundo.

Pode parecer um absurdo, mas quando observo as estrelas, meu coração transborda felicidade, e sinto que não sou deste mundo, não aquele sujo e impuro, junto com as flores azuis, roxas, vermelhas, fazendo parte de uma colheita noturna.

Eu gosto de como algumas coisas criam proporções catastróficas, positivamente falando.
