Cine Obscura - Motion Picture Film Recipe For Fujifilm

Movie-Like Film Simulation Recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV Cameras

Mood: Dark, Low-Light, Motion I've been shooting film for a while and have been looking forward to creating a motion picture film recipe for Fujifilm cameras. This is one of the film simulation recipes for night photography which is called 'Cine Obscura', a new addition to the Obscura recipes. If you haven't heard of any Obscura recipes, then you can check out Vision Obscura and Carbon Obscura. You can check out some of my Kodak Vision3 500T photo samples that I've shot on my rangefinder film camera. Alright, let's get back to the film recipe. Shooting still images that look cinematic can be really fun if you have run out of street photography ideas because you get to train your photography skills and make use of the rule of thirds frequently. In case you don't have a film camera to enjoy shooting motion picture films, you can use the Cine Obscura motion picture film recipe on your Fujifilm camera instead.

What Cine Obscura Film Recipe Is All About?

Cine Obscura is probably one of the best low-light film recipes I've ever created, inspired by the Eastman Kodak motion picture film. Created with the Classic Negative as base film simulation, this recipe can create similar colour to the motion picture film. If you like the CineStill 800T or Kodak Vision3 500T, then this Cine Obscura film recipe for Fujifilm is the best low-light camera setting for you.To get more of the movie tone, it is best used along with any diffusion filters in the market out there, whether it's from K&F, Tiffen or Moment. You can also get the highest density to make your a lot more dreamy in your photos.Shooting with the base Classic Negative film simulation at night might add noise if the ISO is too high, so you can bump down the film grain level to Weak/Small or turn it off completely if you like. The motion picture film recipe Cine Obscura is created only for night photography or videography and is not suitable for daylight use because you might end up getting a really 'cool' mood in your images.

Using Cine Obscura For Video

Can I use this film recipe for a video shoot? Of course, you can! You can set this film recipe in your Fujifilm camera for shooting video if you are not planning to use any colour grading. Most of the low-light film recipes that I have can be used for cinematic videos such as the Cira 800 and One for the Road (B&W), both film recipes are inspired by a popular film from Hong Kong. You can even go crazy by adjusting the video settings and making some epic videos like in the movies.

Fujifilm Fujicolor Pro 400H Portrait Film Recipe (Portrait Version)

Japanese Color Tone for Fujifilm X-Trans IV Cameras

Mood: Japanese, Vintage, Warm Fujicolor Pro 400H has become one of my favourite film recipes for Fujifilm I can play around with the colour palettes. I decided to fine-tune this film recipe for the portrait version after the first version of Fujicolor Pro 400H for streets and creative shoots based on actual film stock. The first version is a more blueish tone, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. So here we go with the portrait version which is warmer and magenta, that looks great for portrait shoots. I know lately that I am obsessed with Japanese film-look recipes and I find the Fujicolor Pro 400H for portraits is the perfect film recipe to be added to the list.

Fujicolor Pro 400H Portrait Film Recipe

This portrait version of Fujicolor Pro 400H is best shot slightly overexposed to maintain the contrast and can also be overexposed up to one stop for creative portraits, well if you like this kind of look. If you want to overexpose your image, I suggest doing a low-contrast scene with good lighting without blowing the highlights, it might look a little flat but nothing is perfect.If you want something more dreamy, the FX filters such as the diffusion filter also work best with the backlight portrait technique by finding the best natural light and try not to have direct sunlight behind your subject, if you get what I mean. If you don't mind blowing the highlights, go for it, as there are no rules in photography when it comes to creativity. Alright, enough of mumbling here, let's get back to the main topic. Fujicolor Pro 400H film recipe portrait version is known as the best film simulation recipe for portraits, works excellently and is best used when there is greenery in your surrounding. You can use the exposure compensation up to +1 stop when using the backlight to create a dreamy cinematic film look.

6 Best Japanese Film-Look Recipes For Fujifilm Cameras

Lately, I've been experimenting and creating some Japanese film-look recipes for Fujifilm cameras. Here I will be listing down all my favourite Japanese color with a greenish tone that I have created. I have been shooting for a while with these Fujifilm recipes and are great for portraits, landscapes and travel. Trying not to create any duplicates, all of the Japanese film-look recipes have their own characteristics and tonal adjustment.If you are a film photographer, you will know about the greenish Japanese film tone and you have come to the right page to find out. Some of the 35mm film that has greenish tones are the Fujifilm Superia 35mm film and sometimes expired film will also create this kind of look.Green is good for the eyes

Fujifilm Japanese Film-Look Recipes

I'm not sure I will be creating any more of the greenish tone as I might create duplicates, but rest assured you can use the Japanese film-look recipe below without shooting duplicate tones. All the film recipes below are fine-tuned carefully and work in the daylight and also for night photography such as the Cira 800 film, which is mimicked based on the actual rare 35mm film from Indonesia. I like the Japanese colour tone of this custom film simulation recipe that I have created. It worked great on landscapes and travel sightseeing when shooting in the daylight. It is also good if you shoot this in the forest, parks, or anywhere with greenery. If you are shooting it indoors, you will get the yellow tone which some might like and some might not. Fujifilm X-T4 // Fujinon XF35mm F R WR I have been shooting with the Carbon Obscura which is one of the Obscura recipes and it really surprised me with the end results. It worked great for streets, documentary photography and daily life. The green tone for this recipe will come to shine if there are shadows in the scene. Shooting with Carbon Obscura will give you a dark muted greenish tone that is similar to some 35mm film stocks. Tokyo Dream

Mood: Vintage, Japanese Film-Look A new film recipe that is intended to mimic the actual Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 35mm colour negative and this is one of the experiments I did and created based on an actual 35mm film photo sample. It might not look the same due to the constant changing of light conditions. This Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 is one of the Classic Negative film recipes that have the Japanese film look. The base film simulation Classic Negative is supposed to mimic the original colour negative.One of the reasons Fujicolor Superia X-tra 400 is such a great film is its high color accuracy. This film captures colors accurately and renders them with great vibrancy, making it a great choice for photographers looking to capture realistic colors.

What Is Fujicolor X-Tra 400 Film Recipe All About?

What I really like about the Fujicolor X-Tra 400 is the moody greenish tones in the dark area, based on my research on the film samples, correct me if I'm wrong. Other similar film recipes are Fujifilm Natura 1600, Fujicolor C200 & Hue Obscure. This recipe is based on the Classic Negative film simulation and mimics the high-speed daylight-balanced colour negative. Suitable for cityscape, sightseeing, travel and portraits.

* The Best Way To Shoot With Fujicolor X-Tra 400 Film Recipe

To get the best results out of this variant of Fujicolor X-Tra 400 for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras, always shoot under the sunlight especially during the morning or evening. Also best use for portraits with direct sunlight as seen in the sample photos below. You can overexpose with the exposure compensation dial, up to one stop overexpose to get the mood that you want. If you want to achieve the greenish tones, make sure to shoot at something black on the background to achieve the results the look.All the streets and portrait samples are shot with the Fujifilm X-T4 and will work for the Fujifilm X-Trans IV sensor cameras including the X100V, X-T4, X-T30II, X-E4, X-S10, and X-Pro3.Are these Fujifilm recipes compatible with the newer Fujifilm X-T5, X-H2, & X-H2S? It doesn't hurt to try. I guess the tone will be the same/similar since it rely on the White Balance Shift and Kelvin temperature, I'll let you experiment with it. Cheers!
