The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) dir. Isao Takahata

a japanese princess finds herself torn between two homes: her country on earth and her rightful throne on the moon. its based on the ancient japanese tale of the bamboo cutter! its visually gorgeous, and the music? i have the ost (composed by joe hisaishi) damn near tattooed in my brain from listening to it so much.

Roman Holiday (1953) dir. William Wyler

an american reporter, in search of a grand scoop, accidentally falls in love with the british diplomat he planned to exploit. first of all i love the uptown girl trope so jot that down. second of all its funny, romantic, and pleasant to watch. also hepburn and peck are very beautiful people.

Catch Me If You Can (2002) dir. Steven Spielberg

this is a weird addition, but one that i stand by. sneaky teenager frank abagnale jr. (a real ass guy) lies his way into wealth and status. no movie makes me hoot and holler, then weep salty tears like this one does. leo is so adorable in this i just want to hug him until his eyes pop.

In This Corner of the World (2016) dir. Sunao Katabuchi

a girl experiences love, terror, and loss in a village near hiroshima during world war ll. every inch of this film is brutal, raw, and emotional. it has a way of exposing the audience to both artistic beauty and gripping horror, and theres nothing more japanese than that. it also features one of the most bone-chilling and tearjerking death scenes i've ever watched.

The Farewell (2019) dir. Lulu Wang

chinese-american woman billi is conflicted about her family's decision to keep her grandma in the dark about her cancer. i've never seen a film that so distinctly captured emotional burden in that special asian family kind of way. you can feel the love and pain beneath family conversations that feel almost diplomatic and robotic in their effort to save face. to an asian-canadian chick, this film succeeds at being a warm hug and a slap to the face at the same time.

Sabrina (1954) dir. Billy Wilder

it's another hepburn film! this one's a sort of modern take on cinderella about a chauffeur's daughter who gains the affections of two wealthy brothers - one a playboy and the other a businessman. i love listening to it, it's one of those films that's good to the ears. the romance makes my heart swell.

My Neighbour Totoro (1988) dir. Hayao Miyazaki

what a great freakin movie. two sisters move to the country with their father and find magical spirits in the darn forest. this film is so full of life and magic it comforts me just thinking about it. also, it amuses me that miyazaki directed this knowing full well he hated the fuck out of japan (though he still liked japanese nature). it gives me hope that even as a hateful little goblin i can still make beautiful things.

well now y'all know which movie soundtracks i cry to while i draw. anybody who'd like to share their own should totally do it!
