Writing initiative 4

Today I presented my process work for my 3dimentional design as well as additions to my 4D productions. My 3D design is a 360-degree painting on spherical matter which generates a semi-immersive view of a vespertine environment like that which I have had much experience within the past. When looking at the painting and turning it around in your hands it appears as if you are moving your head and looking around within the environment the painting produces. It is an interesting visual effect that directly ties into what I’m trying to accomplish with this assignment. This production focuses on sight while my 4D production focuses on sound associations and my 2D guides the audience through the mental states brought on by various senses. Some strengths found within the design was its unique sculptural and creative properties as well as its strong connection to my topic. It was suggested that I set it up on something that rotates making it easier to experience. My experimental piece is one I have yet to begin as I was unsure of what I might produce. However after ticking off another sensory organ, I believe it will focus on touch and feel which is a direction that should begin to propel my ideas.

Totally get what you mean about drawing men, I’ve always found guys more awkward to get right. But I’ve improved a lot after churning out so many naked avengers, practice really works with male anatomy, and with as much reference as possible. I dunno about you but I’m a copier, I can nail a likeness but take away my reference and I’m fucked. Marvel provide a tonne of reference and I’m fortunate to live with a huge partner who doesn’t mind if I pose him for Thor and sometimes Cap. Nobody has ever taught me to draw really. The best help I’ve ever had was learning how to use a critical eye doing life drawing in college. People always hate it when you tell them the best way to improve is life drawing and practicing - but it’s the truth.

Here’s a website my partner uses to generate random images of life models. He’s a designer and really skilled at comic style art, but struggles with anatomical proportions so he draws from life to warm up all the time.

With regards to drawing dudes I’d suggest a couple more things:Have a closer look at comic book art. They’re full of testosterone pumped characters that fucking OWN a page like a punch in the face, great examples of confident mark making. There’s also a lot of really bad anatomy you can use to test your critical eye; when bad proportions work and when they don’t work at all.Personally I think you can find the most beautiful examples of crafted male anatomy in renaissance marble. There’s a fun activity where you look through a load of renaissance sculpture of women and try to spot the ones where the models they used were actually male. (Here’s a hint - the breasts look like they’re stuck on with an ice cream scoop). Renaissance printmakers, too, cause etchings and woodcuts use crosshatching to make them 3dimentional and it’s a great way to learn where and how to apply shadow.

All this depends on what you want to do and how you want to improve. COM01 PT6 Evolution of Animation Blog Post by Villaraza of IS211

Throughout the years, animation of cartoons has evolved by using different computer softwares and technologies. The steps of animating also improved a lot than the past to create a more precise and detailed film. I watched two documentaries about the creation of a cartoon film, “Toy Story 1” (1995) and “Toy Story 4” (2019) which made me differentiate the animation of these two films and how the animation evolved. 

 For the cartoon film “Toy Story 1” that was released back in 1995, Pixar Animation was created by a group of computer engineers to animate films or cartoons by using computers. Walt Disney Studios animated films by using the entertainment technology on their sound design, color design, multi-playing camera and audio animatronics. Voice recordings of the characters were recorded separately. Production of this film used a collaboration of traditional paint artists and animators and computers. They modeled the characters in 3Dimension using a computer then animated it to the characters move or look alive. The music in this film was composed and sung originally for this filmmaking the story of the film the theme of the music. The final production was placing the colors, lights and few lines of the characters and music for the film.

 For the cartoon film “Toy Story 4” that was released back in 2019, he first step was creating a story while making sketches for the film also called storyboards. Editors will cut the storyboards together into an animatic or story reel with rudimentary sound effects, scratch soundtrack and temporary dialogue. The next step is making a concept art by the art department and production designer while the character designer will lay out how each of the characters and their costumes will look in the film. The next step is creating color scripts (digital illustrations) for each frame in the movie helping filmmakers design the style, colors and lightings of each shot. The next is modeling wherein the characters and environment begins to take form (move) in 3Dimention. Rigging is a step wherein they place movable skeletons and joints to control or manipulate every part of the character’s movements using 3Dimension. Shading is the next step wherein they put textures, shades and finishes they need to make look like real by using computers. Next is layout wherein they place the characters in the appropriate place and place the camera to different places to get the perfect angles. Recording of voice for the characters is the next step. Next step will be animation wherein they merge all of the animated shots into a one scene. Simulation is the process to edit other movements for fur, weather and clothing. The animators will use software for the lighting of each scene. The final step is the final touches wherein the editors finalizes the shading, lighting, effects and music. 

 The animation back then, and now, both took a lot of hard work, time and passion to create beautiful cartoon films. Every step of animating improved significantly to have a more precise and detailed film for us, and four our children to enjoy and appreciate every second of the movie. References: Spiegel, J.
