The weight of Mae’s two murders

Thinking of Mae's two murders, the weight of them, and why it's significant that it's her, both times.

A lot of people die in 3WBF, but up until Leo, they have fallen into three categories (unless I'm missing someone):

1. People who may not have had it coming, but certainly played with fire. 2. People who were accidentally caught in the crossfire. 3. Offscreen. (It's implied that Ter kills the mother and child at the motel, but it's not actually seen.)

But Leo's is a premeditated murder, onscreen, and he has done nothing wrong.

Furthermore, Mae knows that.

Ter doesn't care. Ter would kill a dog for cutting him off. Everyone in the show has some kind of rationalization when they kill: They had it coming. I didn't mean to. It's the price of business.

Mae has none. Mae knows what a life is worth, she knows exactly what she has done, and she carries the weight of that, as much as she carries Phon, and later Ter.

I struggle to quite put into words her role in the show. It's not quite a scapegoat, and not a Christ figure, but it is someone who carries the pain of others. Perhaps witness is the best word. She asked to be shown Phon's world, she gets to see it, and she realizes that it has to stop.

She tries to stop it by getting Ter out, as she tried to get Phon out, but that doesn't work. It takes a lot more.

Which is also why she has to be the one to kill Thana, even though both Neo and Shin tried before.

Neo can't be allowed to do it, because Neo is spiralling at that point. When Ter told Leo that Neo was a murderer, a kidnapper and a whore, Leo said "You're lying." Unlike what Ter thought, this wasn't him idealizing Neo. On the contrary, Leo knew his brother. He knew that two out of three of those were just not who Neo was.

Except Neo towards the end is a kidnapper, and a would-be murderer.

Neo can't stop the cycle of violence. All he can do is drown in it.

Shin can't be allowed to do it, because Shin is his father's heir, and his one primary desire is to not become his father. If he murders his father and then takes over his business, that's too close to the edge. Not to mention what would likely follow – covering up the murder, maybe bribing the police, convince Thana's allies not to go after him.

Shin is Luke Skywalker; he needs to step away from the dark side. But once he's done that, Luke Skywalker can't save himself. He needs either Darth Vader's self-sacrifice, or The Millennium Falcon sweeping in.

Thana isn't the type to sacrifice himself. On the contrary, it's his cunning selfishness that spares Shin from becoming a murderer. And then the Millennium Falcon does sweep in, in the shape of Mae.

Without having to say so out loud, Mae places the weight of all those murders where they belong: with Thana. Ter, Phon, Leo, and all the others. The death she caused, the ones she witnessed, and even the ones Phon never told her about.

I see her then as someone who has followed the red thread of death all the way back to its source, and now cuts it off.

And then she walks away. Out of the cycle of violence. Out of the show.

We don't see her again. I don't think she gets a nice place at the beach. Whatever's ahead, it's likely to be difficult. I feel sad for her – but one thing I don't feel is worried. Mae won't be caught up in the cycle of violence again, as murderer or victim.

Mae will be okay.

I'm just gonna keep talking about La Pluie. I saw multiple reactions calling most of episode 8 boring. I am sorry, but if you came to the show interrogating the concept of soulmates and were bored because the two romantic leads said that they choose each other even if they aren't destined to be together, I think you are too jaded and need to take a break from romance.

Sincerely, it baffles me to see people engaging with genre stories and seemingly getting mad that a show is playing around with the conventions of the drama. The spoiler culture brain rot is destroying media literacy and it really makes me sad that it seems like we're chasing the high of something new and unexpected. This on the website of the people reading the same kind of fanfic for the umpteenth time to get their fix.

I just don't get going into romance and being mad that they're doing the big romance things in a show literally about big romance.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

I am going to interpret this to mean a character that the fandom doesn't like, and not just someone that folks don't know about. I could write about Uncle Man from 21 Days Theory, and I've already written about Framboise.

So I'm going to write about Korn from UWMA. Sometimes I will say on the podcast that "y'all don't like gay men when we're not pretty, funny, sexy, or entertaining." I have to suffer through comments about how Kao is a bad actor or that Korn sucks all the time, and both are wrong. Y'all just don't care about the stoic gay boys that try their damndest to pass and quietly suffer.

Korn is a tragic character because he was trying to be the man that he was expected to be, and then Intouch came along. He was harsh to Intouch throughout much of their romance because he knew what he was going to do. You can see the pain leaking out of that man's eyes the entire time. Intouch tried to save him. Hell, they brought Perth Tanapon to cry about their deaths to hammer home how sad the whole thing was.

It just makes me really sad sometimes around here that we're only ever going to get worked up about the loud and flamboyant characters, or the especially pretty and charming ones.

I am here for characters like Korn (UWMA), Mamoru (Kabe Koji), Shiro (WDYEY), Mitsuru (EY), Teh (IPYTM), Cairo (Gameboys), Shin (3WBF), Inthawut (180DLPTU), and many more.

18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...

Currently, I feel some kinda way about how people keep looking for reasons to hate Patts in La Pluie, as if his ideal partner signalling is somehow to be mistrusted. It's just a bit sad for me that folks seem determined to hate the lead in this.

I don't really ever get second lead syndrome that often, so everyone on the Lomfon-Tai train confuses me. Lomfon is RUDE, and I do not fuck with that boy.

25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

Not a specific complaint, but I've said many times around here that I really hate when folks abuse the tools of criticism to say that they didn't like something. Y'all really don't need to pathologize why you don't like something and reach for flaws in the storytelling or production to justify why you don't like something.

We are a niche fandom. We are not seeing the huge sums of money poured into our productions that huge setpieces are going to get. Y'all need to show a little fucking grace to the creators bringing these things to us.

Thinking about the various 3 Will Be Free characters and their attitudes towards killing.

Miw doesn't want to kill anyone, but ends up doing it twice. Get her scared enough and her survival instincts will kick in.

Neo wants to kill people, but can't. He's bubbling with rage, but when push comes to shove, he can't bring himself to do it. The one time he fully attempts murder, he fails miserably. Why? Is his aim that bad, or are his nerves failing him even as he pulls the trigger? Or – seeing how Thana is surrounded by people – is he actively trying not to hit any of the henchmen?

Shin doesn't want to kill anyone, and doesn't. He's actively determined not to be like his father, and he's too level-headed to kill out of rage or fear. But: Shin turned the gun on his father (who he loves, despite everything). It's not 100% clear whether he pulls the trigger, but by his bewildered reaction when nothing happens, I would say yes. If the gun had been loaded, he would have committed patricide right there. Nothing in the world can make Shin commit a murder he finds unjust, but if he finds it necessary, he can kill.

Ter will kill anyone and everyone, and the only thing that might hold him back is if the people he cares about actively tell him not to.

Phon is also ruthless, but more restrained, and also has some rather random rules (like not wanting to kill Sugar because she's trans and thus presumably reminds him of Mae).

Mae dipped her toe in murder and found that she could not stand it. Out of all the characters, she is the one most actively empathetic, looking at things from the victims' perspective. So in the end, she kills the person she's 100% sure deserves it, and then walks away.

Thana will order the deaths of anyone who looks at him wrong, but prefers to have henchmen carry out the actual deed.

Boss John is fickle – he may order you dead one day, pardon you the next, and then order you dead again. All with a smile on his face.

P.P. wants to be a mafia henchman but goes into a panic from nicking Shin just a tiny bit. ("Ohhh you're bleeding SO MUCH!" bitch where?)

haha happy to spread the good news! this is probably the first time i’ve ever seen a poly romance portrayed as like, a real positive thing among the main characters of a show. and lucky for you 3 Will Be Free is actually only a 10-episode drama, so it’s pretty easy to binge!

it’s a great romance/drama/thriller, and the characters are wonderful and compelling and have great story arcs, but i would make sure to check the warnings before watching it because it deals with some heavier stuff.

Hey! This seems to be the proper place to ask this but, can you provide spoilers for me for Great Men Academy and 3 Will Be Free? In Great Men Academy, did the female character that got turned into a man ends up going back to her real body in the end? For 3 Will Be Free, As far as I know Tay's character is supposedly gay, does he sleep with the female main character there? Thank you!

SPOILER ALERT!!! 

I am HERE for you. 

Great Men Academy - no! She stays a boy and with the BF she should get with (I won’t spoil that bit). She ends up having to use her next wish to help someone else. It’s actually really cute. The body-swap aspect is left up in the air. She will keep trying to get back to her female body, but the new BF will love her either way. And there’s an adorable kissing scene. 

3 Will Be Free - Neo sleeps with Shin. Neo also sleeps with Mew. And they have a threesome, but it’s kinda implied that Neo is in the middle and that it’s more a sexualized friendship than complete romance. They end up happy for now, all three of them, in basically a V relationship, but open. So very modern poly, but true to their characters. Shin also has a flirt with another boy on the side. I found the ending very satisfying even if it wasn’t really an ultra romance HEA, it was still happy. 

Hope this helps. 

I recommend both of them. Great Men is the only body-swap that I’ve ever liked. And 3WBF is stand out queer in that it’s the only one of its kind to come out of Asia. It demonstrates how forward thinking Thailand really can be. The fact that it’s GMMTV is, frankly, amazing.

shitty summary: Pan & Soda are huge shippers of their high school seniors P’Kim & P’Way. They even write fanfictions about them under the judgemental gaze of their friend Khet. Until one day, Pan gets in an accident with P’Kim and they switch bodies.

pros:

- the acting was really, really good. but it’s not like I expected anything else from gmmtv anyway. first was amazing as a main role & I hope he just keeps getting them bc he just deserves more spotlight. ohm was good as always though this was far from his best role. jennie was a queen just like in 3wbf & I’m glad her roles had good acting moments towards the end. all of the other actors, fluke, prikhing & ploy were also equally as good. for me the acting is the greatest thing about this series.

- the color grading & aesthetic of the show was lovely. I just really appreciate gmmtv giving each of their shows their own color palette & aesthetics :)

cons:

- the pace of the story was a bit off tbh. there were a good five episodes where I genuinely found myself being bored while other episodes were really entertaining & left me super intrigued. it’s especially the beginning of the series which is just not done super well imo.

- the ending. I just can’t imagine anyone being satisfied with such a bad ending, which is also something that gmmtv has never done before. even 3wbf (which would’ve had much more reasons to have a bad ending) didn’t have that, or at least entirely. but that ending is genuinely a huge disappointment: they build up this epic love story throughout the show only for it not to happen, khet doesn’t get to fix his relationship with his brother, everyone in kim & pan’s life is left traumatized... like this was just......... SO BAD.

- overall I just don’t know what this story wanted to tell us: is it to stop living our lives through others? bc if it is, it wasn’t made clear at all & it all just felt pointless and a huge waste of my time.

- as much as seeing first & ohm kiss could’ve been beautiful......... in the context of this series, I just really didn’t need to see two brothers kiss.

would I rewatch it: nope

This show was a huge, humongous disappointment despite the already mediocre idea I had going into it. It was incredibly frustrating to watch the show get to a place where it could’ve been great & just... not be. I would not recommend at all, to any bl or non bl fan.
